Needed a quick bite and coffee before heading out for the door and we found this coffee place down the street from us :) Prices were fairly high for everything but it sounds expected if the place is connected to a fancy hotel. I decided to the a southwestern chicken wrap and a macchiato. Macchiato was strong and what I needed to start my day. My wrap was good but alittle cold (they tried to warm it up but only the outside warmed up) regardless it hit the spot. Overall a good to go place but nothing special. read more

A beautiful street corner cafe with plenty of comfy indoor (heated) seating with extremely strong coffee and non-stop glam rock blasting from the overhead speakers. What better way to start your morning, right?!?! I'd skip this place and keep walking. Ordered two sandwiches and two coffees to go. ($25.00) The Le bello wrap that was ordered was pretty gross that I ended up chucking it. It had mushrooms, goat cheese, baby spinach and hummus. It was reheated in store and the wrap was pretty burnt. I asked the hubby to try it and he thought it was disgusting as well. This location of Java U is connected to the Intercontinental Hotel so I ended up going here every morning for coffee. I had a latte both times and it was good! I would say comparable to Starbucks (in both taste and price). I also tried their chocolatine which was a super chocolatey version of a croissant (more chocolate than dough). This was the only place in Montreal that wasn't a hit for me. I got coffee and a vegetarian breakfast sandwich. The coffee was not good, I got a doppio con pana. The espresso was so sour and smoky that even the fat and sugar from the whipped cream couldn't save it. The breakfast sandwich had a really odd flavor to it and definitely had meat despite the description so I feel that I didn't get what I ordered. That can be forgiven due to language barrier, my French is laughable and I don't think the person taking my order cared enough to clarify. Absolutely fell in love with this coffee shop! First the cashier was so sweet and helped me learn French phrases that I can use around town. The veggie wraps were fresh and healthy! What i fell in love with and crave here and there is the chocolate coconut macron. OH MY GOD. This was amazing and I was tempted to get 10 before I leave I opted for 1 :( ). The cafe had such a modern, classic feel to it. I could easily find myself reading a book or studying casually at this cafe which is a huge compliment ( tend to be picky about that ). This cafe has coffee, ice cream, smoothies, fast free wifi, comfy chairs, work benches, lots of electrical outlets, clean bathrooms, good music at a good volume. The espresso was strong and not over-roasted, and their are a number of interesting drinks on the coffee menu. I got a Viennese latte because I'm a fan of John Irving. It was as delicious as described in The Hotel New Hampshire. The ice cream was rich and sweet, which I like, and served in reasonable portions. The smoothies were thick and tasted strongly of the fruit that was supposed to be in them. The space is clean, quiet, well-lit, and comfortable for work and relaxation. There is also a lot of it, and not very many customers. The staff is friendly and responsible. The Bilboquet ice cream and hot coffee drinks were excellent and we pretended we were hip by hanging out in the post-industrial space that features bathroom doors you can't figure out how to open and a football-field long (so it seems) laptop bar with only four outlets (two at either end). I wasn't any cooler for having hung out there for a while, but I sure felt like I could pretend to be cooler. OTOH my baby hipster 11 year old hanging out in his fedora sneering at his younger brother while nibbling on mango ice cream fit the place perfectly. Excellent vibe and grub. The Skinny: I would have given this place a 4 for it's mean chai latte, however the food isn't so great (3.5) The baristas are quite friendly. I love the ample seating, contemporary decor and the super fast wi-fi.(4) Overall, albeit pricey, this is not a bad place to hang out for a couple hours if you're in the downtown area. (3.5) I was staying at the Intercontinental hotel recently for a conference and stopped by this cafe for a decent caffeine fix. First of all, this place makes a mean chai latte. Even though they were using non-fat milk, their espresso machine foamed it up to spectacular heights making it super luxurious on a chilly fall morning. In addition, they use Oregon Chai Latte Mix which I prefer over the Tazo Chai mix they use over at Starbucks. That being said, you can get a chai latte 1/3rd the size larger for the same price at Starbucks. My friend ordered the equivalent of a cafe misto (which the baristas made for her even though it wasn't on their menu) which she said was especially delicious. I ordered a chocolatine, which is the same as a pain au chocolat, which was okay. It certainly nothing special as the filling was unpleasantly grainy and their puff pastry was overly dense. My friend ordered a smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese which the baristas heated up for her. It appeared as though they used a Fairmount bagel which is a nice local touch. I didn't like that the bagel was pre-made and sitting in the display counter though. The decor is definitely contemporary with ample seating. Their free wi-fi (ask the barista for the password) is super-fast and convenient if you are staying at the Intercontinental. Overall, 3.5 stars. read more

This place brews a solid cup of great tasting drip coffee and is conveniently located near two upscale hotels. Not a bad, place if you want something nearby. I'd liked it better than the Starbucks down the road. The food looked really fresh and the desserts looked delicious. It was a little more than I expected from a lobby coffee shop. We were looking for some light and healthier options late in the afternoon.....so we went into this cafe. I wish we hadn't....the couscous was awful and apparently not fresh. We initially inquired as to when it was prepared and the server said yesterday or earlier today....we returned the full plate to the counter and ended in a conversation with the proprietor. He told us he had it for breakfast and it was fresh prepared today.....well if it made earlier in the am it was made with old ingredients! First stop in Montreal - COFFEE!! Such a funky place. My latte was served in a simply long large glass mug with a long, slim spoon. It was frothy and rich - first thought: best latte I've ever had. And now that I'm back in NY, the best latte's I've ever had were all in Montreal! Trendy furnishings, colors of white, clear and orange. My outlook has changed since I discover chain coffee houses like Java U. I walked into a clean and neat coffee/eatery and was immediately greeted warmly. The staff spoke English and was patience while I selected my soup, sandwich and coffee selection. He offered to grill the sandwich. The minestrone was excellent. I had my lunch, did some work and thought I would get something to go as I had a late flight home. When my server found out, he advised that there is a Java U at the airport and I do not need to carry my sandwich in my bag for hours in 28 degree weather. Wow - le service clientèle superbe. The lattes were the best lattes that we had ever had. I wish we could give this place 5 stars. The sandwiches, while they have a good variety of them, are not so great. My Cadilac croissant sandwich was good, the cheese choice was delicious. The smoked meat sandwich my husband got was not good, he could not even finish eating it. If you want a good smoked meat sandwich go up the street to Gros Jambon, theirs is amazing.
