I had a hankering for a Bloody Mary. I wasn't even sure ifBloody Marys were served in The Netherlands. We stopped in Café Scheltema. We were quickly welcomed by a friendly Dutch gentleman. It turns out he was actually the owner. Once we were seated, I took a quick look at the menu. There were several tempting beverage and entrée options, but no Bloody Mary. I decided on Snert (Dutch split pea soup) and Dutch sausage sandwich. When the owner came to take our orders, I asked if he could make a Bloody Mary. Of course, he replied. After he put our orders in, I saw him put his coat on and leave the café. A few minutes later he returned with a bottle of tomato juice. He had gone to the market just to get tomato juice for my Bloody Mary. Now, how's that for hospitality! The Bloody Mary hit the spot. The Snert was amazing. In addition to split pea, it contained chicken, sausage, and chunky vegetables. The Dutch sausage sandwich was on fresh bread. It was tasty. Cafe Scheltema was such a good experience. There's even a nice cat, Antonio, that lives in the café.

Winkel 43 is a legendary stop right on the corner of Westerstraat and Noordermarkt in the Jordaan,…read moreperfectly situated along the Prinsengracht canals and just a short walk from the Anne Frank House. While it functions as a cozy, traditional Dutch brown café, virtually everyone comes here for one main reason: the famous Dutch apple pie (*appeltaart*). It completely lives up to the reputation. Served warm with a massive dollop of fresh whipped cream, it's thick, perfectly spiced, and has an almost cake-like crust that sets it apart. Pairing a slice with a fresh mint tea is pretty much mandatory. Because of its status and location, it's almost always buzzing with people--especially on market days--but the staff manages the perpetual queue remarkably fast. Snagging a table on the outdoor terrace for some people-watching along the canal is hard to beat. Whether you're taking visitors around the neighborhood or just out exploring the Jordaan.

I'd say about 95% of the people were ordering the apple pie, so of course we had to get one to see what the hype was about. The apple pie is pretty unique, it's basically a big chunk of cooked apple topped with a sweet, crumbly cookie like crust. The flavor reminded me of those little brown biscuits you get as airplane snacks... basically Biscoff cookies. lol!!! Overall, you really taste the natural apple flavor along with that Biscoff like cookie flavor. The pie itself isn't very sweet, which I actually liked, but adding some whipped cream definitely brings up the sweetness and makes it even better. The setup is pretty straightforward: get in line, order and pay, pick up your food, then find your own seat. It's definitely a popular spot, so be prepared for the crowd and a bit of a wait.

So good I stopped by twice on a 3 day trip to the city…read more I stopped by on my first visit craving a big, hearty sandwich for a late lunch and thought this might be a good find. Happy to report I was very right. I grabbed one of the many outside seats, took a look at the menu that was entirely in Dutch and waited for the wonderful waitress to quickly translate nearly every item for me. I landed on the chicken club and it hit the spot. I arrived hungry but could still only manage to finish half. Chicken was grilled perfectly into thin slices, soft boiled egg was a new touch that I loved, avocado, lettuce and probably a few other things I am forgetting. Oh, and a handful of crisps on the side. On my next visit, it was my last night in Amsterdam and I still haven't tried the infamous fries. I stopped in around 9:30 for a late night snack and a hot ginger tea. The fries were the perfect fries! Thin, crispy, salty. I loved. I also can get behind the mayo thing they do here, even though I really am a ketchup loyalist. Anyway, lunch or dinner or late night snack, this is a good spot. You'll like the foot and you'll love sitting outside people watching, reading your book, whatever.
