3-stars because we were rather entertained by the shindig put on here by the country folk. Drunken country gathering replete with line dancing, live music, near miss dog fights, and upturned women in their lawn chairs all in a very family friendly outdoor, dirt arena. Fun and hilarious environment! We were initially pulled in because it was located right off the highway and we were starving for meat after a 13 mile hike over at Mt. San Jacinto. They had signs situated along the way alerting hungry travelers to the existence of 'Burgers' and 'BBQ'. Their BBQ smelled legit and they were cooking it backyard style on an open grill and smoker. Probably should have went with that! My friend said she rather enjoyed her half rack of baby back ribs... I, on the hand, made a poor choice with the Mushroom & Swiss Burger for ~$12. It came with a potato salad and mac n cheese. The beef patty was very badly burnt (or overcooked, however you want to call it) making the entire burger unpalatable; that burnt, charred flavored just obliterated my tongue! Bread also seemed old. Mac was very bland and hardly cheesy, and potato salad was only just alright. I also ordered some onion rings which were mostly batter with skinny little slices of onion inserted within. Pretty sure if you drive a little further you'll find a better burger (if you can make it without dying of hunger hah). Or, I would just stick to their BBQ. Note- order food inside the market at the kitchen window. Server will probably remember who you (since you don't look like your from around those parts) and bring your food out to you. read more

If you are in the area and want BBQ, eat here! The place seems to have a high turnover rate as far as who is running the kitchen, but the fare seems pretty consistent BBQ wise. I don't recommend anything else, as the shrimp, fries, etc seem bag frozen basic and bland. However, give the new people (Sunflower cafe) a chance to make me wrong! The atmosphere is... unique. Usually fun, but can get a bit rowdy. Normally in good fun and not out of hand, but evenings aren't really a "family environment". They do good stuff with meat and serve cold beer. If that's what you're looking for, there's no better place for 30 minutes in either direction. read more

I was on my way out of town and hadn't had lunch, there to my right was the Big Bear standing in front of the Cahuilla Market PERFECT. There was no customers this Friday at noon about 80 degrees. The owner greeted me and said what can I get for you Sr. I said whats fastest and that I can drive and eat . He said let me make you a Burger, I said medium rare with Swiss please. You have to check this place out while driving to the desert or motoring around it would be a good bike stop, plenty of outdoor seat under tree or a hard cover. They cook every thing on mesquite wood and makes everything taste excellent is a small store that has the occidentals BEER & WINE and other staples. My burger was great but I should have stayed and eat it there, but I was with myself so what the phuck there I am winding down Wilson Valley road munching a great Burger and they re barbecued fries ya whooo. Oh with a drink that you can keep on filling I was out of there for $10.72 read more

Driving back from palm springs to san diego on one of my favorite drives in southern california - the 74 to the 381 to the 79 -I noticed this place with the requisite carved bear in front of the "ol' timey mountain pass general store" so I had to stop and buy a fresca or some jerky or something and check it out. usually these out of the way "general stores" are musty, dusty old, stinky places full of crazy stuff - but this place was clean, stocked red stripe beer and had a disappointing lack of crazy things to buy as "gifts" - I met the owner, who was actually manning the cash register, a cool guy - who is renovating the store and whipping it into shape - he mentioned that from april to november the stage and BBQ area to the Southwest side of the store hosts live music and good bbq - check out the website http://www.cahuillamarketandcafe.com no fresca and i don't really eat jerky, ew.......but I got some good ol' fashioned candies from a wicker basket by the cash register (that would be mentos, original flavor!) and a bottle of water cause I support global warming I'm going back this summer for sure, maybe on the way to coachella - or maybe on one of my long lackadaisical meanders through the back country read more

Love this little cafe run by some great locals, they have a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Not to mention the food is good. My favorite happens to be the pastrami with both sides of potato salad. But we have tried almost everything on the menu, my kids are in love with the fish and chips or the chilli dogs. The people at the market are awesome. Nice, friendly. The food is great.. The atmosphere is nice. The weather is beautiful. They have a lg outdoor patio where the bands play. They have a deli which is nice for getting something fresh and not something out of the freezer to put in a microwave. they also have an outdoor seating area by the BBQ that they also cook fresh food in. The first time we went, about 6 weeks ago, it was pretty good. Didn't really know where to order, or sit. Found out you read the large hand written menu outside and then go inside to order and pay. Had the ribs, a burger and potato salad, Cole slaw, and Fry's. If you want a beer or soda you order it at the tiny market inside. The ribs were really very good. The burger a little dry, and the bun a little too burnt. But pretty not too bad. The potato salad, Cole slaw we're pretty good, the Fry's tasted like frozen from a bag. But all in all, not bad. Last weekend decided to give it another go. On Saturday nights they are open till 10:00 and have live music. My hubby ordered a mushroom and Swiss burger, I got the "special", which was coconut shrimp. We also ordered the fried mushrooms. The mushrooms were fantastic, the burger not bad, but again, a little dry. The coconut shrimp, were like frozen shrimp from a grocery store. Music was fun, a pretty good crowd. Might try it out one more time on a Saturday night. Also, kitchen staff very nice, where you pay at the little market, not super friendly, both times the "very" young boy cooking all the BBQ, seemed very annoyed to be there, and out of place. read more

I have read a review that I dont understand. It said that the owner of the Cahuilla Market was rude, more than once. I have been in the market 100 times and the owner, and all the staff are very friendly. If you need soda, beer, milk, juice, water, bread, chips, candy, charcoal, snacks, etc, etc, its probably here. The outdoor garden area is nice big shade trees a lawn area, tables, and a stage for entertainment. And you can buy beer inside and drink it out in this area. Its illegal to BYOB here, just like anywhere else. The beer is reasonably priced, and cold. And the bands are free. read more

What a delightful and quaint rest stop. Normally, I manage to zoom past this place as it's along the straightaway portion of the highway where you can enjoy the spacious plains and mountains and let your mind wander for miles. However, this past February, I got lucky. Very lucky. A beautiful snow storm passed through and I became very nervous about driving in the snow (imagine girl from the coast in flip flops slipping through a snowstorm in a little 4-cyl old sportscar trying to get to the desert!... not pretty, funny maybe), I pulled over at the Cahulla Mountain Market and was greeted by the owner Jorge and his wonderful family who told me to relax for a bit. I enjoyed a wonderful cup of coffee and great local flavor of family and friends. Anyway, the people were delightful and Jorge just bought the store about 7 months ago and is on an incredible start. I managed to stay for a while as it turns out that the roads up the mountain became closed (not that I would have had the guts to try that mountain anyway) and I manged to get to my grandmother's 90th birthday party in Palm Desert via the other side of the mountain! I will surely be stopping by next year :) read more
