As a returning customer, I was disappointed by my recent experience. I placed an order for a themed birthday cake and put down an $87.50 ($175 total) deposit. After leaving, I realized the pricing felt very high for a simple 1-tier cake serving 8 people, so I contacted the bakery within less than an hour to cancel the order before any work had begun. Despite the immediate cancellation request, I was told the deposit was completely non-refundable and could only be applied toward a future purchase. I fully understand businesses having policies, but customer service and reasonable flexibility matter -- especially for repeat customers and cancellations made almost immediately after ordering. Instead of working toward a fair resolution, I was simply referred back to the policy. The owner is awful and rude to clients on the phone and in person. Ligia expects all of her employees, who are HS students, to dedicate all their time to her as if it were their profession and they were her minions. This is a first job for many HS kids, and she treats them like serfs. Thus, there is a high turnover rate. They are not paid minimum wage and are paid off the books, which is illegal. I am not a former employee nor a disgruntled one. I am a parent and know far too many kids who have worked here. So, here is the secret. Betty Crocker cake mix is what makes the cake, and it tastes as such. While they are nicely decorated, the fondant tastes like glue, and the cakes are decorated by a teen who may have an artistic knack. I would not recommend this cake for the price they charge. I had a terrible experience with Cake Artist Cafe. As the picture shows, the cake fell apart entirely. I contacted Ligia and she immediately blamed the driver who is my family member. While I can't know for sure what happened in transit, I trusted the person who picked up the cake and her responses were offensive and unhelpful when I merely wanted her advice on what could be done to salvage the cake. I ordered my sisters 40 and Fabulous Chanel Birthday cake and cookies and not only did they nail the look I was going for but it was delicious the cake was moist it was a black and white with a lemon filling now I'm not a big Lemon person but it was a cake for my sister and when I tried it, I really ended up liking the lemon. Btw they have many fillings for their cakes and I've tried almost all of them and have liked everyone I had. The cookies not only looked great but tasted great I only planed on eating one but they were so good I ate two! The colors did not match the pictures I sent , the pearls and glitter I requested were not on the cake ... did I mention the pictures I sent them included these compliments ? And then on my way to the car the frosting starting to fall off the cake , I did not go back in the bakery because I knew she was not going to be helpful by the way she treated me when I was picking up the cake and I was already frustrated as it was and I needed to get to the event. In the car I carried the cake the whole ride , the cake did NOT move and by the time I got to the event the whole back of the cakes frosting had fell off . Last year for my sons birthday she misspelled his name and the year before that the decoration on cupcakes I ordered was off and she gave me the wrong cake flavor. Oh and last thing! She uses BOX CAKE ! The coupon features a photo of an exceptionally beautiful cupcake that enticed me (at 9 months pregnant) to make the drive from several towns away into Cranford, park at a meter, and waddle across a busy street to visit this place. I entered the store and was immediately pounced on by the man behind the counter who asked me if he could help me. I didn't have much of a chance to look around but I spotted a very small selection of cupcakes. I asked him if those were the only cupcakes he had. He asked me what I was looking for and said that "they were making fresh cupcakes that would be out later this afternoon." Well, admittedly I was disappointed with the selection of cupcakes. There were less than 10 left on the two large trays. No vanilla butter creams at all. And, none of the chocolate cupcakes on the trays looked at all like the beautifully frosted cupcake in the photograph on the coupon, which is misleading. In spite of the fact that these cupcakes looked about as appetizing as run-of-the-mill, grocery store cupcakes, I pulled out my wallet and was about to pick up half a dozen when I innocently asked, "I guess I will get some of these.. they are not stale are they? When were they put out?" I apparently highly offended this man because he literally flipped out on me, exclaiming, "We wouldn't put out days-old cupcakes! They come out every morning!" I responded gently, "I didn't say they were days-old but you just said you were going to put fresh ones out later this afternoon..." It was at that point that I stepped back, turned right around, and left the store without purchasing anything. This negative review is solely based on awful customer service - it was so bad that I refused to even buy anything there. I have never actually ate their food nor do I ever intend to after today. Papers and brochures are everywhere, old dusty cake samples that you can't touch, even though it's right in your face when you walk in. There was very little to choose from. Some chocolate, some vanilla. The rest were some hodgepodge of leftover birthday party stuff from someone's pile of rejects: a choice of the number "4" cookie, a star cookie, one pink frosted cupcake and few other weird leftovers. I went to the Cake Artist for my sister's Baby Shower cake. I emailed back and forth with Ligia who was very helpful and gave me the price quote. The shower was for 14-16 guests and she recommended the 8" which was a lot bigger than it sounds (we had enough for everyone and tons left over!). The fondant was flawless and the cake was amazing (we had red velvet with cream cheese filling). We brought our own cake topper (from etsy) but they make those as well. Also, I've had other cakes in the past where the fondant tastes plasticky, but this fondant was sugary and delicious.
