New to the area but we've been invited to two birthday parties where they purchased the birthday cake from here. One of my kids' birthdays is coming up so I decided to keep that going. I haven't tried too many cakes in the area so I can't truly compare to give it a full 5 star rating BUT the comments I hear a lot of is they use fresh fruit in their cakes. I usually get birthday cakes from Asian bakeries where fresh fruit is expected so that was an interesting comment to make from my POV. The fruit birthday cakes I've had from here are pretty good. Not too sweet and the most interesting fruit fillings I've had in cake - banana! Among other fruits. The cake isn't as light/airy as I'm used to but not bad at all. The buttercream is on the sweeter side for me but okay if you eat it with the cake and don't leave it until the end. It's not a terribly thick layer. But the cakes were super colorful and it's a lot of food coloring with how saturated the colors are. Your mouth and tongue will be stained if you're not careful. Having said that, I ordered an Oreo cake because that's why my kid wants. BUT I did request that instead of buttercream on the outside, it'll be whipped cream. Still buttercream on the inside though. I'll update this review after the party as it hasn't happened yet. This is a shop that sort of takes you back when you walk in. It's located in a corner shopping center of sorts and they have a shared parking lot so no need to hunt for parking. It has a nostalgic feel with display cases along much of the length, refrigerated sections for drinks (some were Asian which surprised me) and ice cream cake. Plus a wall of candles and birthday cake decorations because they do take a lot of orders for special occasions. No extra frills and nothing for decor's sake. There was a steady line when I went on Sunday morning. Two doors, one designed to be the entrance and the other the exit (but there isn't a police so use whichever door, but the line starts at the entrance door). As you walk up to the counter, someone will help you out. They've got all sorts of things from pastries to cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cannoli's, pies... even a tres leches section that was woefully empty. The only thing is for some odd reason, there are signs of what the items were, but absolutely no prices were posted in the display cases. At least none that I was aware of. I was passed onto the manager to take my order. It took a little time because I'm pretty sure she also decorates cakes and some people were waiting on them but I eventually got my order in. A 9" Oreo cake (for up to 16 people) with whipped cream exterior and birthday message is about $75. I added on a tres leches on a whim - they sold out early but a new batch just finished so I got one straight from the kitchen - was roughly $10. Receipts are old school, orders taken on a paper pad with a carbon copy given to you. I've had a number of tres leches cakes before and this is one of a kind! Deliciously moist, whipped topping - and the cake is halved. In between, they put fruit in there! Plus a maraschino cherry on top and cinnamon dusted over it. It was nowhere near "too sweet" and I rather enjoyed it. A lot. In fact, I'm thinking of calling in to see if I can get some for the party for the adults. My picky daughter loved it. Overall, I have a pretty good impression of this bakery and I'm looking to trying more items over time. read more

My dad loves getting baked goods from this bakery during the holidays. For Thanksgiving he went and got their carrot cake, some bread rolls, and an apple pie. The carrot cake was soooooo good! The icing they use is so delicious and creamy. It was definitely a hit during our family's Thanksgiving. Many were tempted into grabbing seconds. I didn't get to try the apple pie just yet but I'm sure it will taste great with some vanilla ice cream. I have family in Maryland and I now have to bring Haisch's when I visit or I catch heat from sister and brother in law. The walnut danish ring is her favorite. Jelly doughnuts are his favorite. If you haven't visited Haisch's bakery you need to plan a day trip. Get there early if you like fresh jelly doughnuts. If you arrive too late they will be sold out. The perfect Italian leaf cookie ! I was looking for a bakery that had Italian leaf cookies that I hadn't had in years. When I used to live in Miami, there was a bakery next-door to where I worked and I would go over several times for the end of lunch and have two Italian leaf cookies and a Café con Leche. I've heard great things about bakeries in New Jersey so I was on the hunt for that perfect cookie. I stopped in one bakery and after 15 minutes of not being acknowledged, I walked out turns out they didn't have what I was looking for anyway, so that led me to Haisch's bakery. I called them before I took the 30 minute trip through traffic and they did let me know that they had what I was looking for. When I went in, I was greeted and taken care of and the employees were very friendly and interactive. This bakery is a staple when it comes to treats. You can always trust that any cake you get will be a quality cake with great flavors. They have many options to choose from that are ready to go and will most likely find something for everyone. I have been going to this bakery since I was a teen and I can positively say that the service is always top notch. All the staff is very helpful, tolerant, and will cater to customers' needs to the best of their abilities. They have made all my cakes look awesome whenever I've asked for writing on them. The way the cake gets decorated is very satisfying. I can recall the bakery being so busy I would have to wait at least 5-10 minutes before getting service but these days with other great options, the business at this bakery has unfortunately gone down. This has lead them to have less baked goods out and it makes the bakery look a bit empty. Nevertheless, you are likely to find what you're looking for. I hope to see this bakery stay in business for long time, as I have seen many other inde shut down in the recent years. I come from a family of bakery shop owners where we've had bakeries all over New York City, Queens, Brooklyn, upstate New York so I'm used to eating good bakery. This little place in South Plainfield New Jersey makes everything they sell from scratch and it is all amazing stuff. If you don't know you better ask somebody... My mother loves their fig cookies and their little tiny cannolis which I also love. They would see more of me if I weren't diabetic. When I go in that bakery it's like torture. I have to look at the floor because if I look at all the delicious things behind the counter I'm just not that strong... Don't mind when you see a huge line out the door because it goes very quick and it's worth the wait trust me. I'm happy this place is here... INCREDIBLE level of service and flavor. Got a German chocolate cake last minute on a Wednesday afternoon. Picked it up, took it home, tucked in and it was PHENOMENAL. Moist, rich chocolate cake. Frosting was light and fluffy, coconut filling was right level of sweetness. Also, tried some raspberry and apricot rugelach and they were amazing! The apricot was the best I've had in a long while. Unless you're into supermarket pastries, the Princeton area is a dessert desert, luckily, there's Haisch's bakery in South Plainfield who will never leave you hanging for fantastic French and Italian creations that will put a punctuation mark on a great meal. This bakery had the REAL crumb buns I've been craving for so long. When I visit home in NJ, I look for bakeries that sell the crumb buns and tea biscuits I remember from my childhood. It seemed to me that they mistake crumb CAKE for crumb BUNS. There is a difference. My sister-in-law brought me to Haisch's Bakery. and I found the real thing. Delicious crumb buns!! Thank you!!! Love this place! Small space next to a convenience store - very unassuming. I've been told by multiple people to come here and I finally made the trip and it was definitely worth it! The people who work there are so friendly and patient. Sometimes I feel rushed at bakeries and I didn't feel that way at all. Everything I sampled was delicious. This was my first time at this establishment. I noticed how clean it was and Michele was very welcoming. I only stopped it as I happened to see it while leaving Quick Chek next door, I decided to pick up some bagels and a croissant. Michele also gave me a sample of the Rugelach to try. I definitely do plan to order a cake or pastries from here in the near future for any upcoming events or milestone. I will update my review then. Visited this past weekend and honestly everything looked very tasty- the cookies, cakes, and other pastries. No seating here, so more of a pick up spot. They have such a wide variety that I feel like perhaps I have a different taste when it comes to cakes. I got the chocolate lovers cake, and to be honest, it was kind of mid. For a chocolate lover, it could be richer. I only ate about a quarter of the cake since I was expecting a bit more richness. I think the staff was nice, and if I had more time in the area I would've tried the pastries. Perhaps their take on a chocolate lovers cake is different than mine, and though I didn't enjoy this cake, it was still a sweet chocolate cake, and I would go back to try the other cookies and pastries. read more

Great European style bakery! We visit from Virginia and miss this style of baked goods. This is the kind of neighborhood bakery I grew up with (I miss Thiel's in North Plainfield). The service is swift without being rude. They have a great variety of pastries, cakes, cookies and breads for every taste. As a kid, I remember visiting the store and my choice was never a mistake. At Christmas, we get cinnamon bread, Easter, an Italian cookie platter. Healthy breakfast? Haisch's pastries instead. Made a stop by Haisch Bakery after lunch and picked up a variety of items..... Apple Fritter 3.5/5.0: A solid albeit unspectacular version of one of my favorite pastries. The apple flavor was muted by the dominating sweet glazed topping that at least had a good punch of cinnamon. It was also a bit doughy. Blueberry Tea Biscuit 4.5/5.0: This tea biscuit (essentially a blueberry scone) was delicious! Flavor and texture were on point with a mild buttery taste folded into each slightly crumbly layer. The addition of good sized blueberries imparted a nice bit of natural sweetness. Crumb Bun 3.0/5.0: I enjoyed the coffee-cake like streusel topping, but was let down by the bun's texture which was dry and flaky. It reminded me of a stale brioche bread. Double Donut 4.5/5.0: A braided twist of a glazed and chocolate donut, this was really yummy, with a pleasing fried flavor to the glazed donut half and a good chocolate flavor on that half. Overall it had quite an addicting level of sweetness. Jelly Donut 3.0/5.0: There was a proper jelly filling that was not too sweet, a restrained amount of powdered sugar dusted on top, but the donut itself didn't taste fresh as it had an unpleasant chewy texture. Parker Rolls 4.5/5.0: Buttery, soft, and just a hint of honey-like sweetness; this was a near perfect cookbook rendition of a Parker roll! Pineapple Turnover 5.0/5.0: Purchased this for my father, who can be quite selective, but he loved it! He remarked on how fresh and plentiful the pineapple filling was, and the crispy flaky outer shell of the turnover. The fact that he enjoyed it so much is a huge A++. Rugelach (Apricot) 4.0/5.0: The supremely friendly staff at Haisch gave us two complimentary Rugelachs to try after I commented on how pretty they looked in the display case. Thankfully, taste matched looks, as the Rugelach was so good! Rich and sweet (I loved the granulated sugar topping), my only minor comment was the rather neutral tasting Apricot preserve filling. Rugelach (Raspberry) 4.5/5.0: Same positives noted above, but with a raspberry filling that complimented the sweetness of the Rugelach much better. Strawberry Napoleon 5.0/5.0: My sister's personal choice....she adored it! Her noted highlights were the delicious buttery flaky layers sandwiching the equally delicious rich cream that had a fragrant vanilla taste. Providing the sweetness was a very fresh tasting strawberry glaze and a perfectly ripe strawberry. read more

My family has purchased birthday cakes from Haisch's Bakery for over 20 years. So disappointed in the cake recently purchased. When I brought the cake home, it was an 8" cake but it looked much smaller than usual; previously purchased a b-day cake in May. We finally realized that the cake was much shorter. It was as though the cake layers were almost cut in half. For $49.95, you certainly expect to get a decent-sized cake. Be aware that the cake layers are significantly shorter. The height of the cake is 3" tall. What makes it appear a bit taller is the piped rim of decorative icing. Certainly feel cheated. This is the last Birthday cake we purchase from Haisch's. There are too many other comparable bakeries that don't short the cake layers. If this is done to Birthday cakes, they are likely doing it to their other cakes. read more

We ordered a cake for my baby shower last year Mother's Day 2022. They were so helpful and understanding. They were willing to work with me for the exact kind of Yoda themed cake I wanted. I drove over and even though they had a long line of people in the shop (they are very popular!) they took the time to help me design the cake. Unfortunately, Covid hit our family and we had to cancel the baby shower. They were really kind about it and said they would save our deposit for another time. These red velvet cupcakes are decent. The icing is pleasant, although not rich. The cake is standard. The presentation clearly would have been nice. My mother spent three dollars each on these this morning. The woman taped the box shut like it was Fort Knox. When my mother opened the box at home this is how they looked - fallen over the box, smeared. Happy Birthday to her! For three dollars a cupcake they couldn't package them securely for a 20 minute car ride? She deserved better than this for her twelve dollars. We will not return. read more
