So I will start with the positive first Aniah was amazing! She was very patient because I was not really sure what I was looking for. But she walked me through the whole process step by step with out feeling like I was rushed. I was throwing my daughter a tea party so we got a lot of different pastries (lemon bar was my favorite) and a heart shape cake. All the pastries were amazing. Now when it came to the cake... the filling was very watery (yes I did keep it in the fridge then served immediately) and the bottom of the second layer was dry. All around the cake just was not good and no one really enjoyed it. So I would definitely get the pastry again but as far as the cake it would be a no for me. My husband and I visited Cakes by Kim as an option for our wedding cake. Our venue recommended this place so we decided to try it out. We met with Kim herself to try a lot of options, and we were impressed with all of them! Our venue gave us a free cake along with our deposits, but only if we got the most generic kind of wedding cake. My husband and I were so impressed with all of the options that it was hard for us to stick with the generic option, but Kim told us she was so happy for us that she was not going to charge us! It showed a picture of a cake with layers, so I assumed I was getting a cake with cream cheese frosting between at least 2 layers. I declined fruit filling and other filling options (assuming I was getting frosting). I drove from Middletown to Newport for my cake. Looked at it before leaving the store and came home. Imagine my surprise when I cut the cake later that day and discovered NO layers with frosting. I contacted the bakery and was basically told that it was my responsibility to tell them I wanted frosting between layers, even though their online does not provide that option and their picture shows a cake with layers and frosting. We ordered a graduation cake from Kim and we were throughly delighted with the cake. We requested a lemon flavored cake with yellow frosting and the script in blue and decorated with flowers. I ordered a strawberry shortcake, I call they tell me send a picture, their was one slice left ‍ What I received was not a strawberry shortcake, it was a plain butter cream cake, the lady asked for picture and claimed this is indeed a strawberry shortcake where????? I have ordered 3 cakes here. They are expensive and very pretty. Twice, they did not write what they were supposed to on the cakes. Twice, they were supposed to include icing flowers. The icing is good and I wanted a lot of it. That did not happen. the third cake I ordered white chocolate mousse filling, and they recommended, that pudding would go well with it. The pudding over powered the taste of the white chocolate, which was actually good. That cake was also burned on the bottom. It wasn't burned black, but it was very dark and two of my guests commented that. I am going to return as a customer to Cannon's cakes, they are a bit further away, but the cake is far better tasting, and their icing is better also. read more

We purchased 18 gluten free cupcakes for our sons 19th birthday. We were super excited as we aren't typically able to get him bakery items. They did a great job flavor wise. Some of the better GF items we've had. My only issue was the consistency of the final product in presentation. Some of the cupcakes were giant and crowned nicely and others didn't make the top of the liner. This should not happen when the cups are properly filled. I have attached some pictures for reference. This and the fact that there were way to many people in the shop picking up to socially distance property is why they received 4 stars. We've been ordering at least two birthday cakes a year for many years at Cakes by Kim. I gave 4 stars only for consistency. Sometimes the frosting is nearly as thick as the cake layers. I live the buttercream frosting, but geez, that's super rich and a heart attack waiting to happen. We hit the jackpot this year with a funfetti cake (skip the funfetti - it was all clumped together in one spot), with white chocolate mousse filling (fabulous) and buttercream frosting (there was an abundance). All in all, the flavors really worked well. When it was gone, we found ourselves wanting more. See you in February! read more

CELIAC COMMUNITY NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT CAKES BY KIM I can't say enough about Cakes by Kim! My daughter has celiacs and we are always so apprehensive when ordering foods from other places. Last year, I ordered her graduation cake from here and kept my fingers crossed - it was so delicious! No one could believe it was gluten free! And she had zero GI issues. Fast forward a year later to her birthday, and she asked me for a cake. Why shop around when I already know where the best is?? I drove an hour round trip to get my daughter a bakery cake because it's that good! Kim is also great at communicating. When I questioned ordering the chocolate shavings- Kim snapped a picture of the ingredients and sent it over. (made in a Facilty that processes wheat) - Kim had no problem adjusting the order. The staff takes great care for food allergies and the taste of the cake does not suffer for it. So delicious!!!! My fiancé and I are are on a quest to find the best cake in our area, and this is DEFINITELY not it. I've heard good things about Cakes by Kim in the past, so we set out pretty excited. We got a variety of cupcakes to try so we could see what flavors we liked. 1. The chocolate with vanilla buttercream was good! The buttercream was a little thin, but it was overall still pretty good. 2. The marbled cupcakes were BURNT. Like, honest to goodness charred on the bottom. We had to cup the bottoms off just to try the top part. Disgusting. 3. The vanilla with vanilla buttercream, the strawberry with vanilla buttercream, and the bananas foster cupcakes were so dry. I'm not sure if they just sell old products in display case or what, but I could not recommend this place less. Super disappointed, as the designs and array online look fantastic. read more

Second time they messed up my brother's birthday cake. I won't be back. I asked for a banana rum cake. I specifically asked the the bananas not be sliced but be mashed as an between filling-they were sliced. I was sent home with the cake in this packaging. I had to travel with the cake exposed in my car for the 30 minute ride home. If I had known the did have a box bigg enough I could have brought something. They didn't even put any plastic wrap over it or anything. read more

I contacted Kim about doing a two tiered cake for my daughter's first birthday. I had a vision of what I wanted and sent several pictures and detailed in words what I wanted. The theme was a pineapple theme. I was really excited because I saw pictures of her work and a lot of it looked really great! The price she quoted me was a little on the expensive side but I was willing to pay for it. The morning I went to go pick it up, disappointed was an understatement. The cake as a whole looked extremely sloppy and it looked like it was either made in a rush or an amateur put it together. Not at all of what I would've expected from a professional baker. The leaves of the pineapple were drooping and one of the leaves were cracked. When I told the girl who brought the cake, she took it to the back and I could see that they were trying to fix it. When she brought it back out, their solution was to stick a bunch of dowels in the back to make the leaves stick up. I was unhappy with how it looked and asked to speak to Kim. I was told that she had cake tastings all day and would not be able to speak to me. I got there at 9am and was told to return at 1:45pm even though they close at 2pm on Saturdays. I still had a lot to do to prepare for the party as well as go to work, but fine, so be it. When I came back, they added more leaves at the top to make it less droopy, but in the end, I still felt that it looked way too sloppy and did not feel like it was worth the price that I was quoted. I talked to Kim and expressed my frustrations. She was not rude at all, which was what I was somewhat expecting based off the other reviews and her explanation was that it was edible art and the pictures that I sent her were most likely photoshopped. She said that she also put time and money into the cake, which I understood, however I told her that since I was not taking the cake, it would not be right for her to keep my half of the deposit. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because she did refund me. I was also hesitant to write a review because of this reason, however I was still inconvenienced because I did not have a cake for the party and ended up baking it myself. I also wanted to write the review so that others are informed that you may not get what you expect. My mother wanted my father to go pick up the cake for me to save myself on time but luckily I didn't because he would've just paid up the cake regardless of how it looked. Extremely upset to write this because I have been a customer for several years. My mom placed an order for my 30th birthday cake weeks in advance and the day of they tell her they ran out of cannoli filling for it. How do you run out of filling when the cake was ordered in advance? So therefore the filling was barely there. That's embarrassing and totally unacceptable. While the ordering process was a bit harried, the cake came out A-okay, though not quite as moist or fresh tasting as I had hoped. We ordered a red velvet for a 40th birthday gathering. The bakery guy who took my call seemed very preoccupied and had to keep asking me the same questions over and over, which was a little worrisome; you always want to make sure your order is going to be taken correctly. However, they were reasonable priced, a round 8" double layered red velvet cake which fed about 10 people was $25. The filling was apricot, tasty and what they recommended, but still a little odd for red velvet and a very thin layer. NOTE: when they ask you what color flowers you'd like on your cake, they mean REAL flowers. I thought they would add edible sugar flowers and told them red and white to match the icing and the lettering. What we got was two red carnations and some little white daisies with a little bow on the cake. yeah, a little odd but hey, they cake ate fine and everyone enjoyed having birthday cake after our Asian food. read more

This is my go to spot for every special occasion cake. The buttercream is perfect and not cloyingly sweet (or gritty or greasy like some other bakeries) and fillings come standard with price, although I believe if you want more than 2 fillings there is an extra fee. When you order any fresh or preserved fruit filling, there is also a layer of custard-like pastry cream included that takes the cake seriously to the next level. The chocolate moose filling is also exceptional. Almost every time I have been to any event serving these cakes, the cake is gone by the end. Even kids love the fillings that typically only adults might appreciate more. The prices are definitely more than supermarket bakeries but it is well worth it. Absolutely delicious and your guests will rave about it! read more

My cousin and her husband got their wedding cake from here. It was a cute square two tier cake that had these lines pressed in it with little dots of icing wherever two lines met. (think diamond pattern). Apparently the store either offered them a 3 tier cake ( in which they save the top for their 1st anniversary) or a 2 tier cake with a voucher to come back on their 1st anniversary and get a cute fresh baked tiny cake. They took the 2nd option. They used some roses from my cousin's florist to decorate the cake with white pedals. Pretty. When they arrived, the vegan cupcakes were not marked and there was no indication or way to determine which was which. So none of my vegetarian or vegan guests ate the cupcakes. When I called Cakes by Kim, the response I received was... Thank you for bringing that to our attention. The end. I'm disappointed in this company, this was not the first issue with them, but a failed second chance.
