I was born and raised in NY. There is pizza and then there is NY pizza: this is NY pizza! I moved to and lived in Cranford for 33 years and this was a consistent "go to" pizza shop (yes, they sell other Italian food, but I go to pizzerias to eat pizza). I recently returned to Cranford for a visit and had to make "my pizzeria" a stop. Upon entering, I was greeted by new and friendly faces. I got engaged in a conversation with Dad of the owner, a man who grew up in the Bronx - where you could find great pizza when I was a kid. Ordered pickup from here recently, and was excited to try since the place recently came under new management. The pizza was cooked perfectly and toppings were fresh. The pizza tasted much better than other orders I've had there in the past! I have to take a star off for wait time. This was our favorite pizza place when we moved to NJ. We ordered there frequently (one a week) two years ago for the food quality, great prices, and speed of service... plus, we love supporting small businesses! This is our go-to pizza place in the area. Fast delivery, friendly staff, and good value. The pizza is your standard new jersey style pizza, and can run on the greasier side when you add toppings like pepperoni or sausage. We have had the cheesteaks here a few times as well, which are loaded with cheese and have a pretty good flavor. One downside to Calabruas is that the menu feels somewhat smaller than most pizza places around the area. This can make it tough when you are in the mood for pizza but have others in your party looking for variety. Still, the friendly staff and lightning fast delivery make up for limited choices or a bit of extra grease. Great local Cranford establishment! read more

The pizza was pretty good here. Crust wasn't too thick, a little light on the marinara on the pizza, but it tasted good. Got half pepperoni and half plain pie. Ordered the chicken parmesan sub and was surprised the marinara tasted quite different on the sandwich, wasn't as sweet or tasty, a little bland. Also the chicken was cut into little slices like you would use to top salad with, not a full breaded cutlet you typically find on chicken parm sandwiches. Those are the only two items we tried so can't speak to the rest but wasn't impressed with the quality of the sandwich. It was absolutely huge for the price for a large but it wasn't as enjoyable as other chicken parm sandwiches. I'd rather quality over quantity with this. read more

Every year I give Calabria a chance and every year I'm disappointed. I see a lot of people visiting this place, even some friends like it... I don't get it, is it a typical jersey pizza? I grew up in Queens, NY and lived in Brooklyn, this is the worst pizza I have ever tasted!!! Could it be they are known for salads?? I'm never going to understand why I see people sitting inside.... Well here is my explanation, sauce is salty, peppery, and acidic. It just seems like cheap sauce that will give you major heartburn. The cheese is uneventful and not enough. Today Calabria lost me as a customer. I ordered 2 pies for pickup. The moment I walked in the door, the big muscle/tattoo guy couldn't be bothered. He couldn't be bothered with getting my pizza that was ready on top of the oven. He didn't like that I was paying with my credit card, so he mumbled under his breath, rang me up, and just walked away. Really distasteful for a business owner. I won't go here again. I like supporting a neighborhood place, and I've seen a lot of people in and out of Calabrias. Plus, it's really close to where I'm living right now. But after today, I'm just not going to bother going back. Of the four times I've been there, one time the pizza was pretty darn good. The other three times I've actually thrown out the second slice I ordered. It was that bad. And I will pretty much eat pizza no matter what it tastes like! (I will even eat Dominos pizza and Elios rectangles that have been in the bottom of the freezer for two months. That's how much I like pizza.) There was one guy behind the counter one afternoon who was nice. Incidentally, or not, that's the day the pizza was good. Every other time it has been some jerk with Popeye arms with WWE-type tattoos. And I'm not calling him a jerk because of those two descriptors. I'm calling him a jerk because Yelp probably doesn't allow the words I'd like to call him. He ignores you until he feels like taking your order. Then he'll just leave your order in the oven. He gave me burned pizza once. Today an older man who was making pizzas in the back actually came up to the front to take out my pizza because Jerko apparently couldn't be bothered. When he gives you your change, he doesn't actually *give* you your change. He counts it out onto the counter directly in front of himself. You have to REACH across the counter and pick it up yourself! He never makes eye contact, and won't respond to a cheerful "hello" or even to "thank you, have a good day". He's just a total jerk! But even with all of that, I might have considered going back. Until I saw another review here on Yelp today that mentioned health department violations. Yup. Cranford Patch had an article in August 2013 detailing how the Cranford Health Department was requesting a new rule be made allowing them to fine a restaurant for repeatedly failing an inspection. Why would they need this? Well, according to this article, Calabria Pizzeria failed inspection 4 times in 4 months. And the township was having to pay overtime to the part-time health inspector just so he could keep coming back to inspect Calabrias again and again! (Why they don't shut a restaurant down for that, I cannot fathom. Apparently it takes "an immediate public health concern such as a sewage backup" to close a restaurant in Cranford. Not kidding.) Bad service is one thing. Even lousy food can be tolerated now and then. But failing a health department inspection? FOUR CONSECUTIVE TIMES? That's just a no-go for me. read more

Ordered a large veal sub. When I picked it up, the older gentleman behind the counter was friendly but it went downhill from there. The guy with tattoos took over the rest of the order. I found it weird he would not look me in the eyes and was cold when I tried to make small talk. Also he did not hand me my change but placed it on the counter next to the register. Um..Ok, never had to reach over a counter to get my change back but I guess there is a first for everything. When I got home, found the sub.. Well subpar..haha..get it? Ok enough with cheesiness, it did have cheese but sauce lacked flavor and the veal was extremely tough. Veal is suppose to be tender but we found ourselves having to hold the bread to pull the veal. We always had Calabria's pizza on Friday nights growing up as kids. It was always consistent, tasty, and reliable. I stopped eating it for a little while because the sauce lost flavor. It was a little watery and/or lacked salt. Fast forward to now, my family started ordering from there because of their good deals. The sauce is MUCH better and it is very tasty. My favorite pie is the Sicilian with extra cheese. They also do sliced sausage instead of ground sausage which is always a delight. Will continue to go there! read more

Oh Calabria! Ive been going to you since I went to Hillside Ave and back when you had your old place. After school we could walk over to get a slice or two. Half days were the best, we would all walk over for lunch and take your place over and order a bunch of food. Oh the 90's...good days, good days! You were never my favorite but I have a place in my heart for you guys. The pizza was always burning hot, super thin, and very very good! Your pizza is different, slightly different taste that the rest; very memorable. This is Jersey pizza, not NY pizza. Jersey likes thin crust...supper thin. NYC likes it crispy. And the sauce is different too. Calabria's sauce, not something I cant explain in words. Its a bit sweeter rather then herb-y. For a typical pizza shop with mostly takeout business, this one hasn't disappointed me yet. I've had the plain pie, meatball pie, margherita pie and grandma pie. I love the grandma pie most, it has good amount of cheese and it's nice & thin with crispy crust edges. Also has a decent amount of tomatoes on it. The meatball pie is my #2. It's the sliced meatballs, not the chunks. It's flavorful and not overly greasy, and reheats well! The plain pie is a plain pie... Nice sauce-to-cheese balance, and the sauce isn't overly sweet like some. The crust is soft and edges are crunchy. Just how I like it cooked! The wood-fired margherita pie was a little disappointing (especially for the price). It didn't have that wood fired crust flavor and it wasn't crunchy, plus the basil was left in large leaves and there wasn't enough even after I ripped it up to cover each slice. I can't really comment much on their sandwiches, as the only thing I've ever had was a bite of a friend's chicken parm which wasn't mind blowing or disastrous. I usually call ahead and pick up, and my order is ready at the time they say. The staff isn't super friendly, but I haven't found them to be rude either. Overall, this is your typical take out pizza shop. I think some reviewers had different expectations. I wouldn't go here if I wanted a gourmet pie (most ingredients probably aren't super fresh), or if I wanted to hang out with friends. I've never gotten sick from eating here and have never found any foreign matter in a pie. I will continue eating here and am starting to crave a grandma pie after writing this! read more

What a joke! Their food? Horrible. I can pick off about 20 other pizzerias (at least) within a 5 mile radius that trump this place. The absolute kicker to this being a "1 star" review is the muscle-man-toolbag who rarely (if ever) smiles, barely notices his customers when they walk in, and gives the utmost nastiest of attitudes when serving someone. My oh my, it must be terribly painful to be you. Every time I walk, drive, or run by, I want to do nothing but flip muscle-magee off. Unimpressive food and service with a 'tude? Me thinks not.
