I have a pocket door whose handle was impossible to replace. I could not get any help from a locksmith or hardware store. I went to Caldwell's and they found a handle that fit my door perfectly. After weeks of difficulty with so many places they fixed my issue in 5 minutes and for a fair price. If you had a door handle don't bother with a locksmith or Home Depot. Door slabs are great looking, and this is one of the very few places with a good selection of wooden doors. Craftsmanship and Service on the other hand is just terrible. Also, note that they don't deliver, and don't offer installation. They box up a crappy job for you that you can't open till you get it home, and once the box leaves their shop, they stop responding to you and take zero responsibility of their work when there are defects. And there were many defects. We selected a door slab, and got the door pre-hung from them because we wanted the whole set to match and work perfectly. After installing the door, we realized the weather stripping was incredibly tight - the door wouldn't close unless you'd put your entire body weight, and push it multiple times to lock it tight. When I called, they said it takes a few days to settle in. Nothing really changed. I had to get the weather stripping out and use a different one. Later, the door started sagging and wouldn't lock properly. I called them again, and Refugio was just trying to figure out every way to just brush it off and blame it on the installation. I had to send him photos with how the frame was installed level but the door was sagging, send him photos to show how we had more than enough overhang (and its summer - no rains or anything). Called him multiple times, emailed him. He wanted to just drag it on till I gave up, with "I'll ask my manager" etc. They are basically only interested in sales, and once that's done, there's zero incentive to do ensure quality. I finally gave up and getting it fixed from my handyman. My handyman figured out that they had used the tiniest screws for the hinges, impossible to hold the weight of the door. Also, the opening of the frame is a bit too wide compared to the door, and you can literally see a gap. They literally had one job - to perfectly match the width of the door, the opening and weatherstripping to have a functioning door; and secure it such that it stays that way for years. They couldn't manage to get one single thing right. My old door; though it looked old, worked flawlessly compared to this brand new one. You might be fine with just buying the slab from them. But strongly recommend against getting anything else done from them. read more

Buyer BEWARE. We purchased our original door at Caldwell's about 10 years and absolutely loved the beautiful wood door with large front window, it was a game changer. So recently we moved and needed a new front door so we enjoy the water view. We quickly returned to Caldwell's, selected a half glass door. However, this time we were unable to bring our old door in order to have the door hinges precut so the installation would perfect. We did not want to pay the hefty installation price as the door was already about $800 and installation runs about the same. We did end up purchasing the door in and brought it home and immediately sealed all six side as per the instructions and it remained upstairs in our living room until it was time for us to install it. So several months ago, we installed the door and were thrilled. We did not remove the protective plastic on the windows because we still had to paint the exterior (we choose to leave the interior natural so we could enjoy the beautiful quality of the wood). New lock installed and plastic removed and we were thrilled about our new door for about four weeks and then it rained! After the rain ended, I looked the glass and quickly ran to get the glass cleaner. My worse fears were confirmed! The glass unit has a defective seal and water entered into the interior of the dual pane windows. We were in disbelief. I sent and email with photos of the problem and then I promptly called Caldwell's and explained our situation. The customer service agent informed to remove it and bring the door in and they would see if they could repair it. However, it was needed to dry out first before they could actually do anything. I could not believe my ears. Simply take down my front door which took hours to install and lug it in? Surely, there was some way someone could come out to my house and confirm the problem as we are only 10 mins. away. Or maybe they could refer someone to come out and repair/replace the glass unit. Nope, not an option. I am told go out and get plywood and board up our front door and bring it in and they will see if they can repair it. They out source the glass unit from a manufacturer. Luckily we are on day 14 for very sunny days, however, the condensation is still very much noticeable on three sides. The situation has not been resolved and it looks like it very much our problem Very disappointed and now and a BIG PROBLEM to deal with. Not sure how they stayed in business for 57th. We ordered a walnut door and frame. The door was fine, but the frame was cheaply built out of scraps of god knows what kind of wood, looks streaky and completely does not match the door at all. You can see in the picture the ugly streaks. It completely ruins the look of the front door. My call to the management was not returned. So congratulations, Caldwell's, you have managed to save a couple of bucks on materials at the cost of your customers and your reputation. Stay away, shoppers! read more

The work is still being done on the house but the doors arrived and they are gorgeous! I'm told Mr. Caldwell air freighted them because there were delays from the manufacturer, and I haven't been able to see him or thank him personally but I wanted to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. This place has amazing doors and I do have quite a few more to buy, but I have a solid idea on timelines now and can plan accordingly. Caldwell's agreed to honor a sale price for some doors that were displayed that ended up not being ordered so they ordered them separately for me. I appreciate them honoring the price, and don't want them to have to pay separately for shipping, so I hope to submit my next order along with their regular order from the same manufacturer :) I will need to update with pictures of the installed doors that I keep forgetting to take pictures of but these are the doors when I first saw them after delivery to the shop. Refugio was very helpful and showed us the various option to choose from. We paid for the doors on a Saturday and they arrived Thursday morning. Avoid this business! Two really bad experiences with Caldwell's. First, when ordering six new doors I provided all the details of the measurements for each door. They then write up a work order for each door and had me sign off. To my own fault I signed off on one door from their paperwork that had the wrong measurements, even though the measurements I provided were stapled to the order. Because I signed off on it, I had to eat the whole thing and had to order a completely new door. They did give me a discount on the replacement, but I still took the hit. Once the new door arrived, upon installation, the hinges were already coming off. See picture below. Contacted them again for some solutions and received no response. I had to spend additional money fixing an issue with a brand new door as their policy of no returns is horrible. They take no accountability for their first mistake of writing down the measurements incorrectly and no accountability for selling me a faulty door. I needed a good looking door for a remodel on super short notice. Caldwell's had exactly what I was looking for in stock, for a reasonable price. They quickly verified stock over the phone, and were ready with the door when I arrived two hours later. The door got onsite on time and my experience here was good. I can't vouch for the timeliness of custom orders, etc., but if you know what you want and they have it in stock, this place is a breeze and has way better doors than you'll ever find in the big box stores. read more

went into caldwells to try and order some custom bifold doors for a large closet. i had already ordered these doors from another hardware store in SF. trouble is they sent the wrong doors 3 times! (wrong paint, wrong hardware) i figured caldwells would do a better job because doors are their business. the process at the other store was simply giving them the opening dimensions. then they ordered custom doors that fit. here is how the caldwells salesman dealt with that: he started asking me what size the track was, how much space the hardware took up. all these questions that i should not have to know. i explained to him the door manufacturer would know that. this was delivered as a complete kit before (doors, hinges installed, track and other hardware) how would i know how much space their hardware took up. this went back and forth about 3 times until i was thoroughly frustrated. that's when he said he could give me the card of an installer/contractor and that guy could do it for me. this was not a caldwell's guy....it was just some contractor i assume he knew. i got the impression he was trying to steer me to his buddy instead of just order a door for me. i've ordered doors before. this was fishy. i haven't been back there since and i haven't called any of the contractors on the cards he gave me. read more

Think twice about coming here folks! I purchased french entry way doors with a side lite May 2017. Paid a pretty penny and waited about two months for the lumber to arrive and for it to be built. I paid a very well known contractor to help me with the stain and seal job which took another week. Once the door was installed, we noticed huge scrape marks along the doors from top to bottom. Turns out, the builder at Caldwell's used a belt sander and sanded against the grain! This was not visible on the bare wood but it was after the stain went on. I called their manager, Wendy who was no help at all. First, she wouldn't return my calls. Then when i reached her, all she kept saying was, "oh well you signed off on it, there's nothing we can do because you already signed off on it." I then proceeded to ask her for the owners contact info and she told me, "the owners name is Caldwell, go google it and find it yourself". No help at all what so ever. How would the average consumer ever know to look for this when inspecting? Super shady business. I wouldn't ever recommend them to anyone! To make things worst, for the side lite, we ordered Frosted Glass, what we got was a White Laminate instead. I also brought this up to Wendy and of course, Wendy said, well, you already signed off on it. (Note, when inspecting it, the door is laid down on a stand, wrapped in cellophane. Also, the side lite glass is already covered with a protective film for painting purposes and you remove the protective film once the door is stained, so um, really no way to inspect the side lite). What a nightmare of an experience! Now, I'm stuck with a scratched up door and wrong color side lite. I've already spent a ton of money on this project so it doesn't make sense to remove and replace the doors. Folks take it from me, take your business elsewhere! read more

Sadly, got a beautiful looking "exterior" door but it started failing 2 weeks after installation. The exterior door was made of thin veneers and door has warped. Prepped and primed according to specs given but the door was not a true exterior door that can withstand any elements outdoors, especially cold and rain. Buyer beware! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This place is a major SCAM! The manager, Wendy is the opposite of a manager- she has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. She wouldn't listen to what my issue was after ordering a door that was NOT correct when I received it. I called multiple times and she never would come to the phone. She wouldn't call me back. It's the worst customer service I have ever experienced. There are no returns or adjustments once they take your money and even though they messed up the door, it's my fault somehow. Wendy apparently thinks she's correct, even when she's not. There's no reasoning with her. After dealing with many vendors while building my house, Caldwell's is by far the worst I have ever delt with. I will NEVER order from them ever again and I would tell all my friends- they are the worst experience ever. Wendy yelled and screamed at me at said "we don't need your #%*+ing business!!" Today on the phone, she yelled and hung up on me- getting aggressive for no reason at all. I signed the invoice for $1950. And they charged me $2200. + and never told me why or that they would charge me more than my signed invoice. No email, no phone call, nothing. They are the worst business I have ever dealt with. Order your doors somewhere else- because they have no idea what they are doing. read more

I rarely write reviews, and even rarer positive ones but I want to highlight Caldwell. I bought a custom door from then during a major renovation. The door was installed and looked great (Simpson door) Unfortunately, due to miscommunication on having to have all surfaces covered with paint the door started to separate at the seams from the weather. More cosmetic than a concern over the integrity of the door itself. Caldwell's was thorough, quick to respond and put in a temporary door while the fixed and replaced the existing one. I needed an interior replacement door for my condo. I finally found an exact replica of the original at Caldwell's. I didn't want to spend too much money, and got a great price for a solid wood door. And I didn't want to pay someone to deliver it. The guys took the time to measure my small SUV to see if the door would fit...then three of them took at least 10 minutes to fit it into the car!
