I had ten windows that needed replacing, six at my sister's, which needed custom windows to match the original 1908 design that the city mandates on old buildings and four casement at my place. Chico came out to both houses and measured and gave me a fair quote. The custom windows at my sister's look exactly like the original ones, down to the wood grooves. Chico and Danny are amazing, and HONEST. I had water damage next to a window and I called a general contractor thinking that the window needs to be replaced. The contractor was honest and said that if I only need a window replaced, that I should contact The Window & Door shop, they'll do the replacement. Chico and Danny came out, and they told me that our windows are sound, no need to be replaced, that the leak is traveling from another location. Refreshingly honest folks. Highly recommend. Fred is the best. We lost the screw for a Marvin door handle that was already installed in a house we had bought. We called the Window & Door shop, and Fred ordered the screws for us, helped us take a broken screw out of the handle, never charged us for anything - and all this for someone who hadn't even bought the door from him. We are renovating a historical home in SF and have to have all of our street facing windows duplicated. Marvin did not carry the oversized windows we needed in wood, which was required. So, with great trepidation, we sought out quotes for "custom-made" windows. Imagine our shock when we discovered that custom made wood windows cost pretty much the same as the Marvin windows we had ordered for the rest of the house. Had we made this discovery earlier, we would have had all of our windows done here. Chico was responsive. Windows were pretty much on time, as I recall. He even made a perfect replacement window for our master bedroom, when the Marvin one turned out to not look nice. I told him, "Make it look like the stairwell window." With that little direction and a crude sketch, it turned out better than I had imagined. When my windows were sticking, they came out right away and adjusted everything. With renovating an old house, these things are necessary. I got no push back. These guys are good. Pleasure to work with. Highly recommend. Oh, also. Always have these guys install their windows. That master bedroom window I mentioned above was installed by my contractor's guys and they messed it up. I'm sure Chico's guys would have done it perfectly. read more

Fred Ochoa came over to give me a price on a new bathroom window, which I'd decided I needed because my current one is drafty. Instead of selling me something, which he could easily have done, he said "I'm going to give you some stuff that you can use to fix this window." He didn't go for the sale, he just helped us with our problem. I could easily have spent a lot on the new window and never known that I could repair the old one. How many people are like that these days? Of course, now i'm thinking of all the other jobs I could ask him to do. Being kind is the best sales technique. read more

He was so knowledgeable and approachable! He came back with detailed and reasonable quotes for different scenarios (replacement of door only, windows only, etc.) and was clearly not trying to sell. He even noted that refurbishing would be possible instead of replacing, though they don't do refurbishing. We hired the Window and Door Shop, Inc., to create and install several custom wood, double-paned windows for our home. This included: a very large arched picture window, two sets of French doors, two tall picture windows, a kitchen window, a back door (off the shelf product), and a small bathroom window (created in vinyl). Fred Ochoa and Michael Barnet were our points of contact. Fred did the measurements/creation, and Michael was the project manager for the installation. Both Fred and Michael, as well as all the other workers, were friendly and polite. The cost was just under $23K. It took several weeks for the windows to be created, and two months for installation. We have hired numerous contractors over the years for various projects: roofing, pest work, remodeling, stucco replacement, retrofitting, land/hard scaping, handyman projects, painting, plastering, and window replacement (on two other occasions). Our usual method is to meet & greet the workers on the first day, hand over a key, and let them do their jobs. That was impossible with this outfit. Having had windows installed before, we expected a need for adjustments, as measuring is tricky. However, the only installation that did not have fit issues was the door that was factory created. All other windows needed significant adjustments (many required repeat adjustments), and there were loads of scratched pains of glass that had to be replaced after installation. The installation process, managed by Michael, was a circus. Workers showed up without proper equipment, and no direction on what that were to achieve. Some days no one arrived, or were several hours late. There were perhaps a dozen different people who worked on the installation. Two were highly skilled, a couple more could be considered journeymen, and the remainder were unskilled. The pattern seemed to be that unskilled workers came in first, did significant damage, followed by the two moderately skilled guys, who attempted to clean up, and then the pros came in. This happened repeatedly. The end result was a prolonged installation process, and damage to our house. Where a window did not fit, the process was to adjust the house, and not the window. Trim was ripped off, sills were massacred. When a top sash was not installed correctly, and continued to fall down, the solution was to screw it in place into the house. And, several windows had to be re-installed several times. Michael and Fred seemed fine this approach, as long as adequate repairs were made. We eventually took over project management for Michael. This entailed being at home every day workers were scheduled, with a list of items to address, and to answer questions as they arose. Overall, we found the work sloppy and unprofessional. And, in the end, we took over final repairs ourselves - as we did not trust the integrity of the work any longer. We were impressed by the website of the Window and Door Shop, Inc., which included pictures of beautifully crafted/installed windows. The end result for our home certainly did not mirror the advertising. And, to be frank, I suspect they used stock images on their website, rather than representations of true work. If you hire this firm, be prepared to micro-manage at every step, from the original scope of work to final clean-up. You have been warned. :) read more

I have used this shop (Chico)for over 27 years. He has done my entire house as I hired him to replace windows with my seemingly never ending restoration. Some of the jobs were custom remake and redesign with colored glass and intricate cutting. Chico has never disappointed me nor has his workers who I have witnessed being conscientious with the install. (I was there each time) While I cannot speak for the people who have not had the experience that I have, I have only had very positive interactions with this shop and staff. If there were any issues regarding the product that I received it was taken care of without question. One of my windows fogged 10+years after it was installed , Chico took care of it immediately and without charge. This type of customer service is what keeps me loyal to this shop. We needed new windows for our Victorian in the city. Our windows were single paned and over 100 years old. Since the city would only let us do wood windows we had to get them custom made. They are 96 in tall and have a rounded top. We got 3 different quotes for them and everyone said it would be very complicated to make the arch up top, except for Fred. His quote came the same day and was actually the most reasonable one. After we decided to go with them they came to remeasure all the windows and actually showed up 5 mins before their scheduled time. They then handmade the windows in their shop. They gave me the option of getting the permit myself instead of having them do it at an extra charge. I also painted the windows myself. They delivered them to my garage and said to call when I was finished with them which I did. They were very accommodating to my schedule and even came in to work on Saturday. As for the installation work, they put down cloth to keep our apartment as clean as possible, they brought their own vacuum and even brought in new pieces of wood to frame the windows at no extra charge as ours was unusable after 100 years. All in all it was a great experience and I would hire them again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend them. read more

First, The Window and Door Shop did a job for me that other shops refused--re-hang a set of vintage 8' tall exterior out-swing French doors. After foundation work involving steel beam, the house shifted slightly and these doors wouldn't close. An installer recommended by another SF window and door company botched the job of rehanging the doors, requiring that the doors have completely new jambs; I spent hundreds of dollars and was going backwards. The project felt jinxed. So, I was very anxious to turn these doors over to anyone, but I got a good feeling from talking to Chico. Because the threshold was new and already installed--the jambs had to be sized perfectly, with a cut out for the existing threshold made. I provided the hardware/hinges and leftover piece of threshold as a guide. I called frequently and went in to check on the progress. Despite my nervousness, I was always given helpful explanations from everyone there and reassurance from Chico. He immediately got all the potential problems with exterior out-swing doors and knew how to handle them--I'm sure I asked more questions than their average customer but they never rushed or got impatient. Chico made good suggestions, but never pushed. He is calm, knowledgeable, straight-forward. They did not do the installation, but the newly-hung doors slipped into the spot perfectly on top of the threshold, and are still functioning well a year later. Each person I dealt with (and I dealt with door making workers, sales persons, and receptionist) was helpful and pleasant--never the "we are so busy we don't have time to deal with you now" so prevalent in San Francisco trades these days. read more

I had to work with this company as they are a Marvin distributor and I needed a replacement part for my windows. He does not take initiative , does not respond to emails until I called him three times and really month later, still no resolution on my window screen. Very disappointed with the service installing the door. It has been a year and no effort on their part to fix some issues. The new door was not as wide and the molding was hacked together; added a couple inches on each side of some random blocks of wood. The cement was cut to allow the new door to fit leaving a sharp edge that also has been ignored. The door seems to seal well but the hardware is not well aligned as it most often needs to be re-opened and closed to get the latch to lock. read more

After a very bad experience with another company I ordered my next window from this company. I ordered a dual pane tilt pack window. Ryan arrived on time and sent an estimate as promised. I placed my order and give them a date I wanted it installed and they had it ready to install on that date. The installer took time to make sure it was installed correctly almost two hours (compared to 30 minutes for the other company). The window works much better than the one from the other company and has not chips in the frame. They also repaired the cords in two other windows and I was afraid you would would be able to see chips in the paint around the window frame were they had to remove the molding. You could not tell the trim had be removed. A beautiful job. Highly recommended. read more

We replaced our old rickety Edwardian windows at the front of the house with new ones from The Window & Door Shop. What a difference! They fit snug as a bug, pop out for easy cleaning, and look just great. We also ordered a custom window for our dining room. There were a few very minor issues with the woodwork; Fred stepped up to the plate and was very professional in handling the issue. I would highly recommend them! read more

The Window and Door Shop on Industrial in the Bayview--edge of Bernal Heights is awesome!!!! Ryan helped me out. He helped me design a custom dutch door with a third hinged wooden dog door. Three moving parts and it came out great. He made sure all the details I requested came through--down to the beautiful hardware that I ordered through them. The craftman they sent out to install the door, Keith Deener was an incredible perfectionist. He was endlessly patient with my eagle eye and made every effort to please. Their work from beginning to end is top-notch. I unfortunately had my windows done by another S.F. shop--the most uninspired business, which took no pride in their work. They do solid work. My only gripe is that they are really not great at communications. Messages go unreturned, and it can be very hard to get any sense of schedule. They need an office manager that is empowered to do the tasks that Chico clearly doesn't like to do. read more

Think twice about doing business with these guys. I ordered a custom mahogany front door with transom, 3 paint grade doors & hardware. I gave them floor plans, dimensioned door elevations & details. Ryan seemed very competent when I placed the order and gave me a detailed description of everything with the estimate. This is a list of all the mistakes that followed when they delivered the order. 1. The mahogany door was hung as an outswing instead of the inswing shown on the drawings. 2. I ordered & paid for rabbeted frames on all the doors. They sent me standard aplied stop frames. I couldn't delay my installation to wait for them to rehang, so I asked for a credit back. After several weeks of nagging I finally got $160 back which I'm sure is far less than I paid. 3. Thresholds & door bottoms were missing. Had to make an extra trip out to their shop the following week. 4. The doors were prepped for a 2 3/4" backset as specified but they delivered 2 3/8" hardware sets. When Ryan replaced the latches he didn't bother to check and handed me 2 passage sets. Finally got the correct privacy latch when they delivered the corrected mahogany door. This was an extremely frustrating experience. I placed the order on August 19th. It took until December 15th to get everthing I paid for. There is absolutely no quality control evident with this company. read more

We had 3 custom windows made about 12 years ago for bay window in a 100+ yr old Victorian house. They are tilt windows that can be easily removed for cleaning and other purposes. They are still in great shape. I needed someone to come out to give me an estimate on two additional windows. I had the best experience with Chico and his assistant. They were prompt, very professional and friendly. They came out the day I called. They also took a look at the existing windows and checked them for us at no charge. They showed me the best way to remove them and then put them back in. I think their customer services is tops and the quality of the windows holds up to the test of time. read more

Fred was very easy to work with, responsive, paid several visits from the initial estimate, and prep work, and actual job to make sure all went smoothly. They replaced old aluminum windows with rounded windows that replicated the originals. They did great work. Our windows had some complications based on how someone installed the old ones years ago, but Fred and his crew installed them with ease, taking care of all steps start to finish. The employees who worked at my house were very reasonable, professional, helpful, and cleaned up perfectly the job was done. The rates were reasonable and stayed on target. I can't say enough good things about these guys. We are experienced remodellers and did a ton of research before selecting the window&door shop. We have an old victorian and wanted very high quality at the lowest price (also looked at Pella and other Marvin dealers). Went with a combination of their custom wood windows and Marvin. Extremely professional, straightforward and honest. They were accurate in their bid (and very good pricing), on time (actually ahead of schedule), professional (called or came by everyday to check on progress of their team) and did an impeccable job (my window frames were in perfect shape afterwards - this is apparently where others really bungle it according to my painter). Also respectful, clean and courteous. I think one of their big advantages is that they are the owner/installer and in some cases builder of the windows.
