I came in on a $10 daily guest pass because the girlfriend had a job interview at a nearby business. I found this gym to be clean and the equipment in great condition. I was there at 11 am so i pretty much had the place to myself which suits me fine because i can do my thing and say adios. I will certainly return if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

Joined paid first and last plus membership. Did not use Gym as often as hoped. Cancelled and followed procedure. Sent email to give 30day notice with no response back. Gave 3 calls to Gym and left message with no response back. Then sent a 2nd email to cancel Gym membership with no confirmation. Next called again and spoke to person at front desk. Was told there's nothing he could do. He only handles the membership. He doesn't control the money and he would reach out and I never heard from anybody again. The trend is getting the membership opened is easy but trying to cancel it or get any money back is impossible so I just wanted to let people know before they consider joining this gym. read more

I didn't mind working out here at first. It's super basic and can get crowded. One thing I refuse to deal with is FLEAS at the gym. I had some other members tell me they found them all over their legs. They mentioned there was a closure for cleaning. I figured I was good, however one guy saw many on his legs again and upon leaving I found them on mine. This is a huge health hazard and just plain gross. We are now attempting to cancel. We have called, emailed three times, and popped by twice since the discovery last week. Not a soul in sight or heard from. To be fair, I wouldn't show up to work at a place infested with fleas. Don't waste your time. There's many other gyms around for less money and more space very close by. Probably no fleas too. Hopefully we can cancel without too much hassle because it shouldn't be this hard to get ahold of someone. read more

I really wanted to like this gym. They are the only ones I've found near me that have cybex arc trainers, and that's the only piece of equipment I needed. Sadly, the machines are way too close together. I often had to climb over someone using the recumbent bike to get to the machine. If aesthetics are important to you, this is not your gym. It's depressingly gray. As other disappointed customers have already noted, cancelling is a nightmare. I was already planning to cancel when my credit card was stolen. I forgot to update the info with them, and was hit with a fee. That was the thing that convinced me to quit. Then, when trying to cancel, I couldn't get through to anyone. My emails went unanswered, and finally, after weeks, I go through on the phone after waiting on hold for an 95 minutes. Not only did I have to pay the month my card didn't go through and the fee, but an additional month, since they require 30 days notice to cancel. I can only imagine they are still in business because they have a core group of clients who don't mind the environment. If I ever go back to the gym, it will planet fitness. It's worth the extra ten minute drive for a nicer place and a cancellation policy that doesn't feel punitive. read more

Wouldn't recommend signing up here just for the fact that like many of these type of gyms they intentionally make the "agreement" difficult to cancel - common sense would dictate a month to month membership makes sense but their goal is to lock you in as a member or otherwise penalize you through your ignorance of their stupid little agreement. Have only recently joined Calfit Martinez, but started seeing Ruthy right away as a personal trainer. I have always been super intimidated in gyms and had 0 experience when it came to weights and machines. Ruthy right away made me feel so much more confident, and made me feel stronger in the short time I've seen her. I would sometimes even have anxiety on the way to our appointments, but every single time I left I walked out feeling so much better and so happy that I went. I'm happy overall with this very no nonsense gym. I live close by, I like the 24 hour easy access, and I rarely wait to use any equipment. I appreciate the complimentary use of gym towels and hand sanitizer. I do however feel like the majority of the equipment is worn and should be replaced, but all do function as is and I never see equipment down for repair. I feel for the price of membership the facility and bathrooms could be in better shape. read more

I have been a member of this gym even before it was called CalFit. So I would say more than 13 years I've been going here. The thing that I love about the place is it has all the equipment I need, has Wi-Fi so I can watch my iPad well I'm "suffering", and is clean. The gym also has a great trainer, Stacey, who has really help me with my balance, Core, and building up my strength. She was very careful not to aggravate arthritis in different parts of my body throughout this whole process. The next outstanding part is the price. Very reasonable and open literally 24 hours. What I don't understand is why more people don't take advantage of this, an inexpensive way to stay in great shape. read more

I'm a very, very, very old man and I've been working with Ruthy Olson, the body building champ, to improve my physical health and she's been outstanding. I can see the difference despite still having a horrifying diet. And my arthritis has been under control which is great. I highly recommend Ruthy as a trainer. Very knowledgeable, very patient, and can kick lazy butts into gear when needed. And having access to a gym 24 hours a day is a great perk. Always clean, sometimes crowded, but everyone is pretty cool about sharing. read more

This gym is unique, very different from other gyms I used to have memberships at. Ben and the other personal trainers and staff are very friendly and are super duper knowledgeable. They know what they are doing and you can tell they lead by example (they're all in extremely good shape). They are also flexible with payment plans for membership fees - which are totally affordable. This gym is nice because for one thing, it's never crowded and I can always access whatever machine I need to get to even though there are a lot of members already! Plus there are boot camps almost every single day of the week that are pretty intense, yet intimate. The best part about it is that it is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Honestly, I never thought I'd get a personal trainer, but having Ben train me has been such a pleasure and a great reward to myself. He is there to help you achieve your goals and he truly cares about all of his members, even if he isn't your personal trainer. He wants you to work out and live healthier because it is benefiting YOU in the end, not him. As my trainer he has pushed me to the limits and after every session I am literally DRENCHED in sweat and feel like I've been worked out to the max! I do see results - I feel stronger, firmer and definitely more fit. People actually have been complimenting how great my legs look!!! :) Now I just need to get my abs in tact. But seriously, I LOVE THIS GYM because it is CLEAN and I've seen Ben vacuuming and cleaning the weights and machines. He takes really good care of this gym and its members. This is a terrific little low cost and low stress gym. They have regular cardio machines and weights, both free weights and machines. The regulars who go there are very kind and considerate and there is absolutely none of the "show off" stuff you might see at bigger gyms. If you choose to do personal training the two trainers, Richard and Stacy will design a personalized program based upon your goals and won't try to sell you any products. This gym is perfect for someone who is a complete beginner and needs a gym within walking distance of their home. I'm not planning to join after my experience, because the price doesn't match the quality. I read A LOT of reviews before I called (even the 70-something filtered reviews)... so here's my attempt at giving my fellow yelpers a solid information packed review all in one *smiles* I was looking for a new gym close to work that had 24/7 access; I found 2 in Martinez. I tried THE OTHER gym for several months; (for $39.99/month). They had the basics, but only a few select machines and a couple of standard elliptical machines; not enough variety to keep me motivated. THIS GYM: I saw a flyer in the mail for "*as low as $19/month" and I found myself not going to my other gym nearly enough to make a dent in my long term goals. I called the number and left a voicemail regarding interest to see the facility; someone called me back within 2 hours and let me know that someone would definitely be on sight to assist me until 7pm during the next several days (whew, I can never get anywhere before 5pm). I showed up without calling back that day. I almost passed right by the place, it looks deceivingly small from the street; no parking meters after 5pm (small metered area 1 nickel=8min). I was greeted by an obviously fit woman (good sign) and had a moment to review the corkboard of REAL before/after photos of current members (very motivating). I made it clear that I read mixed reviews on yelp, wanted to sign up for the 7 day FREE pass, wanted to see for myself what the gym had to offer AND I had less than 10 minutes to spare. She was very pleasant and gave me a detailed tour and all the info I needed. Hearing the word "Yelp" (super sonic hearing?), "Ben" came over and introduced himself with a light-hearted humorous remark referencing basically the only negative yelp review by "Stacey"; by the way, he has no hard feelings, he's still a little confused about what came off negative during their 2-min convo on that day (I guess we'll never know) :P Today I finally got off the couch and took advantage of the FREE 7 day pass. Inside the gym, the music was pumping at just the right volume (excellent speaker system), but I'm one of the "un~social" headphone people so I blocked it out with my own music. They had an EXCELLENT Variety of machines that work out every part of your body (8-9 machines for upper body/back alone). I am MOST IMPRESSED with their sit-up machine and the machine that isolates the muscle on the back of the arm (below the tricept)... I don't know what it's called but it AWESOME! Oh and they have at least 4 of those cross-country floating elliptical machines (which I LOVE!) Prices with 12 month contract: -$19/month is for WEEKENDS ONLY (kinda deceiving flyer ad, I don't know anyone who only goes on weekends?) -$29/month for 24/7 access; 2nd person can sign up at the reduced rate of -$19/month for the same 24/7 access. -STUDENT DISCOUNT is $24/month for 24/7 access. Set-up costs: 1st month + last month + $59 processing fee for EFT. I agree with previous yelpers that it's a little high for adding a name/card number into the system, but it a local business so I don't mind the 1 time fee so much. IF 24-hour fitness did it, I'd be scouring the internet for a coupon code ;P Prices with NO CONTRACT (Month-to-Month): -$34/month for 24/7 access (still less than the other gym offering 24/7 access) -They have other options listed, including student discount, but it didn't pay close attention. ***BONUS: TOWEL SERVICE IS INCLUDED, take a clean towel at the door and toss it in the hamper on your way out. I can't recall how many times I'm searching laundry for a "gym towel" and end up bringing a kitchen towel or an oversized towel instead (what a hassle). Notes: -If you choose not to enroll in EFT, then I think that it states (in small print) that it would be an additional $5 per month on ANY membership option (which would bypass the EFT $59 processing fee). -You can ALSO opt to AVOID ALL FEES and hassles of EFT, by purchasing 6-months or 12-months in advance. I'm looking at buying the 6-month 24/4 access for $174 total (no muss, no fuss). In Summary: Are you KIDDING ME?! $29/month for 24/7 access at a gym that basically has EVERYTHING I need. I am again MOTIVATED to get back into the gym! PS While nobody offered up an incentive to yelp... I will be sure to ask them about it if/when I become a permanent member *LOL* ;)P read more

I am all in favor of small gyms because of the close atmosphere with the staff and they are usually equipped with specialty equipment you won't find at big name gyms; but my wife and I had the worst experience with this gym. And I don't like the bribing of their customers. They tell you to write a review on yelp and get a free training session or month. Who is going to write a bad review with that deal... Seriously! I m going to give an honest opinion of this place. And I am sure many people do love this place but I hated it and my wife hated it. First off the good stuff. The price is fair, $19 a month is decent. They do have some nice specialty equipment like TRX, kettlebells, resistance bands, tractor tires, etc... Also I being certified in sports medicine can say that Ben does offer some good training routines for people that are fun and get results. The gym is also usually pretty empty which is nice. Now the bad stuff. I found Ben to be a jerk. He was so rude to myself and my wife since the day we signed up. I started going late at night when he was not there just to avoid him because he was so rude. I even have rude text messages on my phone when I canceled my membership. I know he people love him but I don't find him to be a nice person. The problem with going at night though is since there are no employees you get a ton of high school kids with no membership going to workout or should I say goof off. The specialty equipment eventually was locked away because stuff kept breaking. That is the point of insurance. Something breaks you are covered. You take away that equipment and now you are an ill-equiped gym. There is a lot of equipment that I wish they had and a lot of equipment I wish they would get rid of. Some of the machines don't do anything but cause injury and could easily be replaced with better equipment that will actually train your body properly. I now go to a big name gym and spend a lot more per month but it is totally worth it to me. There is tons of equipment and options for fitness like basketball courts, swimming pools, sauna, spin classes etc... And best of all they treat me and my wife like decent human beings. I would easily give Cal Fit 4 stars if Ben was not so rude. Because of my experience with him I have to give this place one star. It is a nice gym and I do recommend giving it a chance but I won't go back ever again. read more

I really don't know what Sandra C is so upset about. I joined this gym because of the Owner - Ben. He has been nothing but nice and helpful. I have seen him on many occasions help people who were working out on machines and help them properly adjust the machine and show them how to use it. I certainly didn't pay all the fees she is talking about. Perhaps if she had actually listened rather than trying to see what she could get for free, she would have found out that this gym is more reasonably priced than others. As for it being small - YES it is - and that is one reason I like it. I don't feel intimidated like I did at 24 Hour Fitness. No, they don't have a shower - I have one at home that I am more comfortable using. No, they don't have free training - but then neither do any of the other gyms!!! And as for the attitude of the owner - he has a great attitude - try finding that at 24HR! In my opinion Sandra C is just an unhappy person who thinks the world owes her something. Honey, my advice to you is JOIN ANOTHER GYM and stop making up lies about this one. After calling and cancelling my subscription AND paying the 60 dollar cancellation bill AND the January bill, today I received ANOTHER statement saying that I owe ANOTHER 29 dollars, EVEN THOUGH I CANCELLED AND GAVE MY 30 DAY NOTICE. Was told the gym could not do it and we had to contact their financial company who handles the withdrawal. That company said we were under contract and to contact the gym. This gym is truly excellent. While it may bit a small in size, they fit everything you need into the space. The staff is excellent and always willing to help. My favorite part about this gym is that it is 24/7 with key access. I recently had to cancel my gym membership because I stopped commuting passed it. Unfortunately, it is out of the way of my home and I had to join another gym. There was a mix up with my cancellation and the management took care of it right away. This gym is a gem within the Martinez community. While I will no longer be going here, I will recommend this gym to anyone looking! read more

Love this place... it's a small gym, it's right in downtown Martinez (which happens to be like a 10-minute walk from where I live), and it's open 24 hours. Because of its size, there are never too many people that you can't get the machine you want, and because it's open 24/7, if you wanna work out at midnight, go for it (you'd be surprised how many people you'll find there at that time of night). There are TV's that you can change if you wanna watch something while you run, and you can change the music (whoever keeps putting on R&B to work out to... really??). Something else that I've never really thought about, but my gf brought up, is that - because of its size - it's not intimidating at all. Calfit Martinez is near my home and the advertised price really can't be beat, so I tried the one week pass to see how I liked it. In the end, I decided on another gym that is closer to work and had a few more amenities, but some of the things I liked about CalFit during my trial run: - Enough machines/equipment to go around, at least at the times I would go, all in working condition and well maintained/clean - Convenient location - Complimentary clean towels to use during your workout - Very nicely maintained restrooms with toiletries, etc. The minuses for me were the size - it is a smallish space which can make it a little claustrophobic - and the parking closeby is street metered parking from 9-6 everyday except Sunday, which, depending on when you get there and how long you work out, can start to add up. You could probably find non-pay parking in the neighborhoods nearby though. Other than that, I would totally recommend this place to anyone who needs a low-key, no-nonsense gym that's well-equipped and clean. read more

Ben has been my personal trainer for 3 mo and I'm getting a lot of compliments from coworkers of my result, esp from females. I was 150 lbs back in Jan, today (Oct) my scale reads 129 lbs! I'm a lot firmer or toner than 3 mo ago. I'm starting to see a lil' 6 pack, lmao! I say give it a yr with a good diet of lean protein and complex carb, Ben says in 6 mo. I will be a hard body! If you are looking for a well-equiped, small, personal gym . . look no further. California Fitness 24-7 recently opened in the location formerly occupied by Snap Fitness. The new owners reorganized the equipment and have spruced the place up. It's clean as a whistle. Staff is readily available to help six days a week. You can purchase their services and I've seen them freely help customers with proper stretching exercises, best form for weights, etc. They offer Basic Training courses on Saturday mornings. Ben is the onsite manager. He previously worked at Balli's and is an award winning weigh lifter. He's a very nice, welcoming person and is very attentive to his customers. My wife and I are delighted that this location is again open. Moreover, it's better than ever! read more

I used to belong to Snap Fitness when it was in this space. Went through 2 owners. The concept was, is, a neighborhood gym with 24/7 access. The security cameras and card access meant owners didn't have to be onsite, and they weren't. If you wanted to schedule time with a trainer there was a book on a desk with contact numbers. It was all very hands-off. I've been working out at CalFit since the middle of November. The difference between then and now is remarkable. I knew I wanted the added accountability working out with a personal trainer brings and have been working out with Ben for close to three weeks. I've worked with a personal trainer in the past when I belonged to the Bay Club in San Francisco. Completely different techniques and styles. Ben keeps my workouts fresh and new, we haven't duplicated a single routine. He is very enthusiastic and proding. I like working out with someone who pushes me. If you're looking for a great place to work out in the neighborhood, this is the place to be. And if you're looking for a loveable taskmaster, Ben's your guy. read more
