Five stars. This was by far the best glasses-shopping experience I've had this year. I had gone to several other places before this and kept seeing the same generic, dated options. California Avenue Optometry was the first place that felt like it had a genuinely well-chosen selection of frames that were stylish, flattering, and high quality. Emily was amazing. She really knew her inventory and was unusually good at pulling frames that looked good on me right away. She also helped me try a range of shapes and colors and was great at helping me figure out what actually worked best. Jessica was also very helpful, and the whole experience was friendly and professional. I also got a great price through VSP on some really nice frames, which was a big plus. I had a really bad experience with this place and I have been using glasses for years! First, they do not have exchange policy!! And that is not written anywhere or told during the purchase!! All the other optometry places allow to change the frames if the customer is not satisfied within a reasonable period. Secondly, they do not follow the same policy as all the other places, that the lenses could be replaced within 2 years of purchase!! They only allow replacement within a year. That policy is not written anywhere either, or told when purchased!! Avoid this place, that is my sincere advice. read more

This is not a good place to take your business. They have made several mistakes over the span of 2 years. They do not call back,they treat people very rude,they over price everything and when confronted with the issues at hand they push the blame on the customer. I have received better customer service at the DMV!! My family and I have been patients of California Avenue Optometry for years and we don't plan on changing doctors anytime soon. The front office staff (Tiffany & Geralyn) make the whole customer service experience for our family so simple. Scheduling a family appointment that accommodates 3 to 4 patients in 1 office visit has never been an issue. In fact, our kids look forward to their annual appointments, especially when it's time to pick out new frames with Geralyn and/or Tiffany!! In fact, I don't recall ever having to sit in the waiting area for a prolonged period of time due to an over-scheduling of appointments. It's always a pleasure visiting Dr. Baggett - with each office visit he takes his time so as a patient you know your prescription, and you'll get that one on one time/attention to discuss if there are any concerns or changes with your vision, and most importantly Dr. Baggett is very knowledgeable in his profession. But that's not it.. the rest of the process continues with the same great customer service as when you first walked in. From picking out the perfect frame from the latest trends or classics, to ordering, billing/payments, & finally picking up your new glasses you've been anxiously waiting for... the staff at California Avenue Optometry makes it that simple for their patients :) Hoping you have the same great experience! read more

Dr. Bagget has been in charge of my eyes for something like 18 years. I have a very complicated prescription (glasses over contacts), and yet he has managed to keep me active, with great eye health, and better vision than I ever imagined possible. Geralyn, who fits the glasses and takes care of the paper-work for me, may in fact be the sweetest woman on the planet. My daughter sometimes asks if we can go get her glasses adjusted just so she can say hello to Geralyn, and discuss the latest styles. Honestly, I give this place my highest rating. And since I always rate the margaritas on yelp, let me just say that have never had margaritas at Cal. Ave. Optometry, but if they served them, they'd be great. However, La Bodeguita Del Medio across the street has GREAT margaritas! read more

I've been going to Dr. Baggett for eye exams for at least seven years and have been super-happy. I have insurance coverage so I can't comment on their service prices. They have a decent selection of glasses, but they are seriously overpriced. They sell glasses for nearly $400 that you can buy (new) from reputable online retailers for under $100. There also seem to be a bunch of fees for things like anti-scratch coating, UV protection, polarization, polycarbonate lenses, etc. read more

Went someplace else after I got my prescription and got an entire year of contact lenses when they only offered me 6 months of contact lenses covered by my insurance (because they over charge). Been here once before but came by here today since my coworker wanted a second opinion on his frames as he is forking out quite a bit for the frames and lenses. The optometrist attended to him and gave him his glasses for fitting but then we waited a good half hour before she came back to check on him. I browsed around and they have some decent D&G, Fendi and Dior glasses but nothing suits my fancy so I ended up browsing the gossip magazine that was in the magazine rack. Well, we overheard that two of their "stylists" were out today hence the longer wait time. Selection of frames = decent but not plentiful. I still very much prefer my optometry place in the city who is more attentive and provides for a wider selection of frames and sunglasses. :) read more

Dr. Baggett proved extremely unprofessional when he issued me the wrong prescription. He refused to give me a complementary exam or refund for the exam, and only communicated with me through his front-desk assistants. I ended up going to Palo Alto Medical foundation which was far better priced and accurate. I would not suggest Dr. Baggett as an optometrist. read more

I broke my glasses recently and I was completely helpless without them (can't even drive to LensWorks etc.). The people at the clinic were so understanding! At first they said that the glasses were unfixable since the plastic frame was broken and they didn't have a frame that could fit the lens perfectly (also though they didn't mention it unlike the store across them, but most of their glasses were pretty high end, above my $100 budget). Then I asked if they had some hack that could fix up my frames for a few hours (maybe tape?) The helpful lady took my glasses, went back into the kitchen to tape them up and oculus reparo! She had taped them but she also found a set of cheap frames that didn't fit the lens perfectly but that saved my day! Definitely coming back here again (when I'm rich enough to buy their regular glasses) read more

Top line: * Best fit of contacts. * Nice people; they work to make you feel comfortable and cared for. * No hassle on using insurance including for eye exams and glasses. I struggled for years to find the right contact lens fit and functionality. And Dr. Baggett worked to provide me with a set of lenses that matched my active lifestyle. It was an eye-opening experience . . . [sic]. Seriously, they are experts (and seem to be well known for) in helping patients find the best comfort and approach for contact lenses - and glasses. The front desk lady pursued me to buy the most expensive series of frame, by telling me that it is the cheapest one in the shop. And even told me that this is the common price of frames in US. Which is $500 and she made it cheap for me to $ 360. Later on that day I went back to the shop and asked for changing the frame, but she told me it was impossible to be refund, and it totally depends on the mercy of the doctor if I can be refund. I finally made it possible to change into another cheaper frame, which was about $150, but her attitude was very bad, when I stepped out of the shop, I hear the lady saying bad words about me loudly like: I never knew customers can get refunding, that is out of my knowledge!......... The worst part was after one month when I got my glasses, I found out the prescription was WRONG!!! I could not wear at all the glasses I paid for!!! read more

I walked into this office on my way back from lunch to inquire about making an appointment. They take VSP, which I have through my job, and are very accommodating. I had an appointment made within minutes, came back at my designated time and saw Dr. Lovering. She was awesome-- thorough, kind, and incredibly helpful. My astigmatism is pretty bad, so I have to wear a very specific brand of contact lenses. At my previous optometrist, it took weeks to get them in -- at Dr. Lovering's office, I had my new lenses 48 hours after my appointment. Amazing!!! My glasses come in next week and I'm so stoked about that -- Geralyn, one of the office assistants, is a frames stylist and will help you go through the selection process giving you very helpful feedback. With her help, I picked a great pair that ended up being much more budget-friendly than I'd anticipated. This practice is GREAT!!! read more

I don't usually post but thought this was noteworthy: I had a tear in my contact this morning and went to Menlo Park Lens Crafters in the hope of getting a single replacement lens. I received horrible service and long-story short was told I needed to purchase a $70 box of contacts in order for them to give a free single trial lens for the day. So, I left and went to California Avenue Optometry. They were lovely, so helpful, and without any question just handed me a single lens that I could use for the day. I've been a patient of Dr. Dan Baggett's for over 10 years now (since before he was at this location!) and he is wonderful. He is a thorough and patient optometrist, which I appreciate, but the really wonderful thing is that he remembers his patients well. I also run into him at the movies in Palo Alto a lot (I think both he and Dr. Shawna Lovering are both film boths), and Dr. Baggett is also an avid pilot and flies out of Palo Alto Airport. Once when I was there they offered to clean my existing pair of glasses, and, for whatever reason, the cleaning caused the coatings on my glasses to start flaking off. They offered to replace the coatings on my lenses for free, without my having to ask at all! read more

I went there a about 10 months ago for my eye exam and new pair of glasses. Unfortunately I tried a expensive frame that I had never used before. The big problem is the lack of inventory that they carry in the store. Eight months after purchase the frame broke, which they replaced. Two months after that the exact frame broke again. I asked for a refund, which they could not provide. So I am stuck with an expensive pair of broken glasses and looking for a new optometrist. I've always been impressed by early appointment times. I go in before I go to work, and am usually in and out in a 1/2 hour. Dr. Lovering is super nice and attentive. She also doesn't think my astigmatism in one of my eyes is enough to correct and hasn't forced me to get new frames since I'm primarily a contact wearer and my prescription hasn't changed that much. I do agree with the other reviewers as their costs are high. However, I remember them being that much at my optometrist I saw as a child. read more

This is the first place I'll go for eyeglasses and the only place i'll go for eye exams. Dr. Baggett was wonderful, and the staff were all really knowledgeable and friendly. They saved me time with the way they handled the ordering and installing of my lenses. They're great. Only downside: they're dealing in premium products, and they're expensive. If you want the largest viewing area in your progressive lenses, see Dr. Lovering. Their supplier provides custom digital lenses and these are not an option at cheaper outlets. No one will explain this cost difference to you unless you ask. Dr. Lovering and Geralyn have proven themselves to be times-taking, patient, supportive, and exacting in meeting my requests for several years. They answer and seem to anticipate my questions. What's more, they have stood by me through indecisiveness, referred me to a top-tier retina specialist, and go out of their way to fulfill my complicated orders on a rush basis. My mom and I have been going to this eye doctor for 5 or more years. I really like them. Their staff is extremely friendly and my prescription feels just right. Had an appointment with Dr. Lovering and she was pretty attentive and thorough with the eye exam. I have a slight left eye astigmatism and she didn't think I needed corrective lenses. They do kinda push you to get a pair of sunglasses though. Their selection is nice, but prices are higher than retail. All in all, a pleasant experience.
