We stayed on the sail boat--the Narnie O'Shae and hands down it was the nicest weekend getaway ever. It's peaceful, the scenery is gorgeous, and the boat is beautiful. There were three sleeping cabins which would accommodate 5 but since it was just the two of us so we slept in the largest master cabin--the bed was VERY comfortable. There are 2 bathrooms but they are small: it is a BOAT people. But you have access to the marina bathrooms with large showers. You also have access to the Hotel amenities, pool, gym, restaurant... you can even order room service! There is a nice kitchen and living area inside and the outside deck is a lovely place to hang out with your morning coffee or an evening cocktail. The only downside is we never wanted to leave the boat so we didn't get as much sight seeing done as we had initially planned... we just sat on that pretty little boat all weekend... soooooo relaxing! We will return! BTW--the owners were very nice and accommodating their other boat looked pretty amazing as well.

I wanted something different; no Marriott or stuffy hotel, so I went onto vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and immediately fell in love with The Brighton Beach Bungalows. The reservation process was very easy; email exchange followed by a phone call, and working with Laurie and Ian was incredibly easy. They are a lovely married couple who own the two rental homes, appropriately named the "Sun" and "Surf" bungalows. Upon arrival, we were excited to see that we were about a block off of Ocean Beach, had our own garage (which is very necessary on the busy block), there were 5 or 6 cruisers for us to ride around on, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach towels, a beach blanket... and even a shower outside in the yard area. Once inside, the same attention to detail carried all through the house. Wifi, two TV's, every type of dish or cooking item you could ever need, ample towels, a plush, comfortable couch and incredibly comfortable bed. Everything we needed was right there for us. Even on last minute booking, the bungalows are perfectly reasonable cost wise, and the ability to cook and entertain without having to eat out every meal was fabulous. This was the perfect place to stay, and I will never stay anywhere else in San Diego again!!

You are within a 10 minute walk to everything would need, including bars, restaurants and of course the beach. We will definitely be staying here again and also recommending to all our friends! The walkways are nice, filled with flowers and tropical vegetation. Art greets you when you walk on the island. A 2006 sculpture, "Pacific Portal at Shelter Island" by James Hubbell sits on the north side of the island. The swirls in the sculpture capture the movement of the ocean and the colorful mural tiles are reminiscent of Portuguese influence. The sculpture is a perfect spot to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the boats with San Diego skyline in the distance. I love boats and it was fun to watch the fisherman launching their boats. The public boat launch is so huge that several boats can launch at the same time. I walked out over the boat launch to see the bay and listen to the gulls. I found out the hard way that the dock is very slippery. Beware! Further down the Island is a fishing pier. The pier was crowded with fishing hopefuls. Fish don't stand a chance because there are so many lines in the water. A fish cleaning station is available for the ones that don't get away. I saw restrooms nearby and people picnicking. Free public parking is available, but you've got to get there early. A small playground is available with colorful climbing structures. People were walking dogs along the walkway and sipping coffee. The setting is perfectly California and serene. Further down the Island is a beach and memorial. There's a lot to see and the walk is easy with the concrete walkway and multiple restrooms. The Island is worth a walk or drive. I'm guessing the loop was close to two miles or less. Go early, because traffic backs up on the weekends around 11 am.

Our hotel was near the end of Shelter Island which made for a beautiful walk. Among the yacht and boat sales you'll find some great restaurants and breweries. We love Ketch Grill and Taps and Eppig Brewing and the Brigantine to name a few. A little further into Point Loma, you'll find even more. Liberty Station is just a short drive or Uber/Lyft away. Lovely scenery and that great laid back San Diego vibe.
