Great place if you have pets - amazing location that is 100% pet friendly! Our 11-month old pups loved indoor and outdoor space

We were so happy to stay at Blue Heron Cottages January and February of 2025 (our fourth or fifth time--we've lost count)! As always, we had a wonderful time traveling with our two pups. Austen and Dani were so accommodating and welcoming, and took care of all of our needs quickly and completely. Denise, the owner, is so quick to respond to any email communication, and so very helpful. Ocean Beach, fondly known as "OB" offers so much, from Sunset Cliffs, shopping, easy walking, and such beauty. We love finding dinner at the Wednesday evening Farmers' Market, walking two blocks to the ocean from our cottage, and shopping downtown on Newport Avenue. It's great, not to mention unusual, to have a safe and secure parking spot off street, but BHC offers just that. And 20-30 minutes away by car: San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Torrey Pines, Shelter Island, Little Italy, Gaslamp District, and more. We have already booked for next year! read more

The court yard was fantastic for our dogs and other dogs. Loved the location, close to many food places and only a 15 min walk to dog beach. The beach is great if your dog loves to swim. The staff and owner are very accommodating. Your very own parking spot. The place has a real draw back though, no AC, our room had little air flow. For extra they let you use the portable AC, which is in the room but locked up. It made it livable but not great, pretty hot, especial when come back from a day at the beach. The portable AC came apart a few times. I don't believe they charge us, even though they said they would. My suggestion is they put in two split AC units in; I think that would do the trick. I would have given them 5 star if they had AC. Also they had a woke sign, nothing a Christian or conservative would agree with, but I chalked it up to California‍. read more

Blue Heron Cottages is the perfect place for trips to San Diego. I visit as often as I can with my 4 dogs and it is perfect. The cottage is everything you need in terms of an Airbnb and it is 100% dog friendly. It is walking distance to entire town, Sunset Cliffs and the Pier for amazing sunsets. Denise and Austen are amazing to work with and are right on it if you have a question or concern. AirBnB's have a list of things "to do" at checkout and it's quite common to keep costs down. Stripping beds and loading dishwasher is super easy to do to help keep costs down in San Diego which is the most expensive place to visit in the U.S. I visit 3-4 times a year and can't be happier to have found such a paradise. read more

Blue Heron Cottages BY FAR EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS! I couldn't ask for a better 4night stay in the cute ocean beach area! First off ocean beach...yasss-the cottages are walking distance to about everything you might need. We got to walk a few times with our dogs, a few blocks away from sunset cliffs and Dog beach! ughhh y'all okay so for us, the location was perfect!!. From getting in, private/assigned parking, easy lockbox key instructions, cute decor, GRAND KITCHEN, spacious rooms, quaint bathroom and plenty of fans and tower fans. Our first impression, we were impressed! Omg - I want to give detail on every singe aspect of our stay because it was so (dare I say it)... perfect. I had the pleasure of speaking with Denise over the phone a few times regarding parking, payment etc and the communication via email and phone-spot on. She even recommended that the AC we prepaid for wouldn't be needed and boy was she right. The weather was perfect. All the Open windows & fans we were just fine. And that's saying a lot coming from AZ where "no AC needed" is foreign to us...+ the fact we have huskies...1of whom is extremely Thickcoated furry so we keep her cool ...so yea no ac? For this time of year "May grey" it was fine ...& nope the weather didn't keep us from dipping in the water ha! Ok so back to our stay lol... You enter through the courtyard which is again, perfect little dog haven. Fully enclosed so we were able to let the doggos roam free with our supervision of course. There's a grill plenty of seating, GRASS...our huskies come from AZ dirt and rocks ..grass for them is rare so they LOVEEEED it Lolol! BHC really, really cares about their property and the people who come to stay. There's a shed with things you can borrow for beach time, there's laundry room and dog towels! We are so picky with our dogs-like yuck they should have their own and YUP they supplied them, hoomans are provided with beach towels!...& my wife made mention so many times how's good their laundry smelled haha! We meant to ask them when laundry detergent they used lol. Yes we are those type of ppl. Ok so next is the fact that they have hoses outside for rinsing the furrbabies down which we definitely used more than once. Each home has outside line for the wet stuff. Full size amenities. The. List. Goes. On....salt and pepper, utensils, the good gold coffee filters...plenty of towels, pillows...aaahh writing this review makes me want to book another SD vacation #cryingface. The bed was creaky with every move lol but it didn't matter just pointing out #shrug. I can't think of anything wrong and I'm the first to start a place out with high hopes and then start mentally taking away Yelp stars if anything is bad/uncomfortable/not right. But my jaw was on the ground as soon as we parked. I loved, loved it here. I wish we got to talk more with the on site manager but we did talk some and he's such a nice guy. We were on the go for the most part so it was so great to be able to pop in on the dogs, let them out to potty/play and feel safe knowing they were safe and sound at "home" .. our home away from home was safe and secure and we didn't have to worry about parking haahaaa. So yea, we had 0...ZERO complaints...no minor inconveniences, no negatives here. Not one ounce of dissatisfaction or disappointment. BHC thank you for EVERYTHING. We loved it, we WILL be back. There were some things I liked about the Blue Heron Cottages and some things I didn't like. We stayed in cabin #6 And here's the things I loved: *Dog friendly-with an enclosed court yard so the dogs can safely be off leash. *Courtyard- a great place to kick back relax and make friends with your neighbors. *Room #6-on the end with a large front porch. *Mattress- Very soft and cozy. *Kitchen- fully stocked (just supply food) *The decor-nice and comfy. * Beach supplies- from towels to surfboards! *Location- walkable to shops & restaurants. *Santa Cruz cliffs- a Beautiful beach at the end of the block (a lot of stairs to get down to it). *The Manager -Charlie was very kind and accommodating. Things I didn't like: *Noise-It's in the flight path so the airplane noise is really loud and pretty constant. *Cost & Fees-They charge a one time cleaning fee of $125 and damage insurance fee of $49 (non refundable), making a short stay more expensive (2 nights at $199 each +fees was just over $600 total). *Smoking- Area & ashtray is on #6 front porch. *Parking -space for cabin #5 and #6 are really small. You park sideways in front of garages with little space. The other parking spots for #1-4 are much more spacious. *Clean Up- A long list of chores is requested before you leave. *Mattress- can be too soft for some. *Air Conditioner- Extra $10 a day. *TP & paper towels-They only supply 2 toilet paper & paper towel rolls and no Kleenex. It's okay for a short stay. You have to bring your own if you need more. *Smell- there was an awful dog pee smell in the living room. It was a rug by the front door. I removed it and the smell went away. Conclusion: Overall it was a nice place to stay and cost wise a long term stay would be better. Other then the rug is was very clean and comfortable. If you like this type of vacation rental and need a dog friendly place you should definitely check it out. ***In Response to the Owner's Comments: I understand that this is a vacation rental property and that things are done differently, including the fees. My review is simply that, a review. There are some things not mentioned on the website or in other reviews and I am simply pointing them out in order to assist others when deciding on a place to stay. The property is a nice place to stay, but just wasn't for me as I prefer a hotel setting. I think I'm most offended that the manager would suggest that they misunderstood our conversation about the rug and accuse my dogs of having an accident. My dogs would never have an accident inside! And Yes there is a green cigarette disposal canister on the FRONT porch of unit #6. I suggest staying in another cabin if that would bother you. read more

This is my PRE-Review... In April, my hubby and I will be celebrating our 14th wedding Anniversary and my, Uh, 21st birthday AGAIN!!! And it's also our dog's mini vacay! This will be our 6th or 7th trip to The Blue Heron Cottages with our fur babies. They're little ones and they love it here! The love to sit with the open window on the back of the couch barking away (during daylight hours) on a sheet, playing in the surf and sand both at the local dog beach and on Coronado Island (it's only a 20 minute drive), they love going to restaurants (lots for them to chose from), and the whole city of OB is catered to fur babies. Water bowls everywhere. Pooper bags galore. And the people are so animal friendly. And the people at Blue Heron are AWESOME! Let's start with Charlie. He's the BEST! He once kept my cane for about 2 months (I forgot it) and didn't let anyone steal it until I could get back down to San Diego. I've seen him edge grass with SCISSORS when his weed wacker has been on the fritz, he helps everyone with everything, he's great with ALL of the animals (even his own...hahaha), and he's even given me great SDSU/CSUSD info (2 of the Universities for my daughter). He helps with broken things in the cottages. He's just a great guy. Once he gets his degree and moves on (if that's his plan), he's going to be HARD to replace. And Denise and Kristopher (the Owners) ALWAYS remember us. They make everything so easy. They are kind and so easy to work with. I've never met either of them but whenever I speak to either of them on the phone or email, I enjoy our talks. I love having a CLEAN atmosphere that really should be a whole lot dirtier considering so many dirty animals (think of wet, sandy, furry dogs coming in after a day in the surf) are there week to week. Charlie makes it look like a park like setting. My husband and I LOVE coming here year after year (multiple times a yr) with our girls. We'll be coming in 5 weeks and can't wait!! My husband, 6-year-old daughter, 2-year-old golden, and I just returned from a 4 day trip to OB and we stayed at these beautiful cottages! We wanted to take a quick trip to celebrate the end of summer, and since our daughter is not vaccinated yet, were looking for some low-key and safe options, and Blue Heron was the ticket!! It was our first time and the cottages were perfect: super clean, quaint, and had everything needed to relax and be comfortable. They are close to the beach and an array of activities, restaurants, shopping, and attractions. We felt very safe as well, since they followed the current Covid protocols, and encourage guests to be vaccinated on their website. During our stay, we used the updated kitchen to cook, we bbq-ed and relaxed in the shared courtyard (and the other guests and dogs were lovely!), and we visited the local OB dog beach and the Coronado Dog Beach. On Charlie's recommendation, the on-site manager who was fabulous, we picked up food at the Olive Tree Market (pre-made sandwiches and salads), and headed to the dog friendly beaches most days. Our favorite was Coronado dog beach, which is a short drive but seemed to be less crowded than the local one, and our dog was a little more mellow at that beach. There are tons of cool restaurants and places walking distance from the cottages, as well as a few alcoves beaches, but we mainly drove since we had the kid & dog. We borrowed their sand toys, beach towels, and Quest beach cart, as well as some chairs, which made our beach trips super comfortable-- and it was great since we didn't have to pack all that stuff for the drive from our house to SD, we just used theirs. Prior to our visit they had installed a new washer and dryer system that were free to guests (no coins needed), which was super convenient. Our daughter took the living room queen couch/bed, and made it her 'room' for the trip (she loved it!), while my husband and I slept in the bedroom. A few other reviewers mentioned the noise of the airplanes, as well as the cleaning fees and protocols: the airplanes were little loud in the morning, but it's really no big deal and pretty short-lived, and the only real 'cleaning' you had to do when leaving was loading the dishwasher and setting it to 'run.' There wasn't a ton of cleaning protocols involved. I highly recommend these cottages -- we are already planning our return!! read more

We absolutely loved our stay here! It's dog friendly with a fabulous courtyard that is safe for kids and dogs, and it's close to a dog friendly beach! We are a family of four with kids ages 9 and 10, plus three small dogs. This is a wonderful place to socialize your dogs and feels like a second home. We cooked all but one meal, and found a fabulous Thai place on the way home from the beach the first night. There are a lot of restaurants in the area if you don't choose to cook while vacationing here. The cottages were clean, and rules were with COVID consideration in safe distancing. The host, Charlie, was very accommodating and friendly. We will be back to visit again for sure! read more

Blue Heron is an amazing place to stay in OB! I highly recommend it. Property is very close to the beach & restaurants. About a 20 min walk to the dog beach and if you have a car it's a minute away. Property is extremely dog friendly and the staff is amazing. The cottage itself is very clean and spacious and we had such an amazing time there with our dog Molly. We love this place! We just spent 9 days with our two dogs at one of our favorite places to go! The cottages are always clean and inviting when we arrive. We call it our second home. There are 3 dog local dog parks. Our dogs love the Fiesta Island dig park the best. They love running through the water where it's located at Mission Bay. We have tried many of the local restaurants that within walking distance. Great food! This past trip we went to San Diego's Old Town. It was a fun outing. We've met the nicest people each time we go. Blue Heron Pet friendly cottages is like a slice of heaven. Every amenity has been well thought out, for us humans as well as our canine companions. The cottages are extremely clean, with just the right amount of furnishings. The bed was also super comfy! The cottages are well light with the abundant sunlight from the windows in every room. Very little to no noise from the adjacent streets. Even during the holiday season when I stayed there,it was quite. I felt very safe in this area and had zero concerns about safety. The location is ideal, just a short walk to so many fabulous places. My particular favorite is the cove just a block or so away from the cottages. Denise was extremely accommodating with the our reservation dates and Charlie was always available if needed. Also the fellow guests at the cottages were all very friendly and everyone's dogs got along very well. Overall just a great environment for the pups. We have been staying here for the last 4 years. If you have dogs this is the place for you! Each cottage opens up to the court yard where the dogs all mingle and play. It is so very clean. On the grounds and the cottages. Charlie the manager is stellar. Such a nice person. You can walk to almost anything in OB. Dog Beach is a 1 mile walk as well as the Dog Park. With all the madness of St. Patty's day and the music bumping from nearby Newport Ave, I descended upon Blue Heron Cottages with three dogs, a baby, the in-laws and the Dearest. And... we all fit comfortably in a little one bedroom cottage. It was walking distance to tons of restaurants, ocean beach, breweries (Belching Beaver, Pizza Port), and wine shops. Charlie was a great host and made us all feel welcome. The inner courtyard was comfy for the dogs, and there were plenty of pet waste bags available. I stayed here for the first time this year and would book again if visiting the area. The cottages are not only truly dog friendly, a rarity in CA, but spotless and well-equipped with everything needed to feel at home. I could happily live here. The common courtyard area is a peaceful spot for relaxing, socializing, or playing with your dog. The cottages are in a quiet residential neighborhood easy walking distance to downtown Ocean Beach and two blocks to a beautiful beach cove that never got too crowded. 12/30/15 - Just got here. First impression? Love it. Did someone say dogs? Everyone staying here has one including us. In fact that is how we found this place looking for a dog friendly place to stay for the week. Will update review later. Update: 1/3/16 - Sadly, we are at the end of our trip. And my feeling is the same as when we got here. This place is great and we will definitely be back. Even if we don't bring the dogs, we would stay here. But if you have dogs and you are traveling, i don't know of a better place to do it. Cottages: These cottages are very nicely appointed with nice furniture and upgrades. The counters are granite and with stainless steel appliances. The grounds in the courtyard and outside curb appeal is amazing. It looks like a mini resort. If you have people visiting you during your stay, it is nice to have a good looking place. Sleeping Arrangements: Our cottage slept 4. 2 in the bedroom and a couch that pulls out and sleeps 2. (where did you guys find this couch, it is awesome. My daughter is going to college next year and this would be perfect.) Super comfortable as well. If you have more than 4 people, there is plenty of room on the floor to throw down a full or queen inflatable mattress on the floor. Kitchen: We were surprised that the kitchen has so many appliances and cook ware. You will not need to pack anything extra. We baked, used the stovetop, coffee maker, microwave and toaster oven. Everything you need is here. Outdoor Space: The outdoor space you get in addition to the cottage was really great and we spent much of our time in the courtyard having dinner, using their bar-b-q's and sitting having coffee at one of the corner nook areas they have. They have lots of beach toys to borrow such as kids toys, boogie boards, paddle boards, etc. Close to beach: If you walk toward the beach down Santa Cruz about 1 block you will hit the beach. There is a chainlink fence and to the left you can walk down to a little cove. This is where we did our beach thing. It was like having our own private cove. There were only a handful of people there and it seems it was more locals vs the folks traveling. The main beach area off of Newport is what you would expect where people are drawn to and would suspect that it gets super busy during the summer. Staff: When I called to inquire I spoke with Christopher, which from my understanding is one of the owners. Couldn't be a nicer guy. Very accommodating and provided a great explanation of the property and amenities. Upon arrival we were met by Charlie who is the onsite manager. Super cool guy and took care of everything we needed. If anything came up we just texted him and he dealt with it immediately. Thanks Charlie, you made our stay amazing. (Christopher, you have a great person here who obviously cares about what he is doing here but you probably know that already) Environmentally Friendly: So staying here really started a conversation with my wife and I. It is obvious that this place is environmentally friendly / conscious. The hand soap, dish soap and laundry detergent is "Method" and the paper towels and toilet paper is recycled. They have fridge style water filter so you don't have to go through as many plastic bottles. I am sure providing these things comes at an expense and they could totally provide cheaper products if they wanted to. Bring Extra Toilet Paper & Paper Towels: We were here for 4 nights, 5 days. Had 4 kids with us and some friends / family visit. We had our motorhome here so we had backups of everything. Price / Value: Forget about the dogs for a minute. We were coming with 6 people. This meant 2 hotel rooms. For a decent hotel we were looking around $150 per night so $300 for 2 rooms. We spent so much less than that and had our dogs and all the outside space. I could not imagine having to stay in a hotel and be bottled up. The weather is way to nice and it cooperated during our New Years weekend trip. This was a home away from home. read more

We stayed here in early/mid June. We were initially going to stay only two nights but we had car problems and were able to stay an extra night because they had an opening in another cottage. The staff bent over backwards to help make it as easy as possible for us. As a result we were able to stay in more than one of the cottages and each one of them was impeccably clean. We brought our two little dogs and it was the perfect place for them. They had a wonderful patio out behind all of the cottages where the dogs could play and comfortable places to sit while they did so. The cottages are located a few walkable blocks away from the beach and some nice restaurants and bars. The area was quiet and fairly easy to get to. I highly recommend a stay here even if you don't have dogs. read more

We just left the Blue Heron Cottages and really enjoyed our stay. The cottages are very well maintained, clean along with everything you need to cook basic meals. They are very dog friendly; which is why we chose the cottages. The young man that managed the resort was very nice and offered his help very willingly. Our only complaint was that our cottage was freezing in the morning! Like see your breath freezing! There is a small heater that we left on in the family room for our kids and dogs, but that left the bedroom super cold! Granted it was much colder at night than normal, so I'm sure this is something that they normally do not deal with. The beach is walking distance and the dog beach is fantastic. The one thing that we were not prepared for was the homeless situation of OB. The cove was beautiful but a little sketchy if you have kids. We definitely did not let them out of our sight! Ever! We found a needle and surgical gloves along with the remains of what we can only assume was "home" to someone. If you have children I would recommend heading over to the dog beach, wearing your pups out then head to a safer area. Mission Beach is close, and we also spent 2 days at Kellogg Beach. It's on the bay, the dogs can play, and there were no crowds. The kids can build sand castles, and swim in the water. We also went over to Coranado for a day. They also have a dog beach and its a easy drive. You definitely won't find a place like Blue Heron and the affordability in Coranado so I would suggest staying at Blue Heron and making the drive. (If that works for you). If you are a couple looking for an affordable getaway with your dogs, OB is totally fine. Just keep your eyes pealed when walking so you don't trip over someone sleeping in the street! ;) read more

Just booked our second 5 day stay at the Blue Heron! Stayed there last September with our two pups.... it was the perfect location and so well set up for us and our pups! It had everything we needed....kitchen fully stocked for cooking and serving, absolutely loved this place! Charlie the property manager was great! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Blue Herron Cottages. Our unit was impeccably clean and all natural cleaners were used. The unit was well supplied for everything we needed for a great vacation, including bikes, beach chairs, and sand toys for the kids. We have been coming here for 5 years with our small dog. This little cottage community is super dog friendly and safe for your (supervised) pooch. The location is great, walking distance to many conveniences and restaurants. A rugged , rocky, beautiful coastline is a block away. The cottages are small . Our little cottage was perfect! My son and I took a little vacation with his dog. This was the perfect place! There is a good sized courtyard for our dog and his new friends to run around and play. It was like having our very own backyard. The cottage was great - bedroom with queen sized bed and little living room that doubles as a second bedroom for nighttime with a sectional that pulls out into a queen, both very comfortable. A little bathroom separates the rooms. There's a little kitchen with everything you might need including a water filtration pitcher. We forgot to bring coffee to make but there's a little market and coffee shop within walking distance. Speaking of walking distance, everything is so close! The beach, restaurants, shops, etc. Charlie, the onsite manager was awesome! Very friendly and super helpful. Cannot wait to come back and without a doubt we will be staying here again! read more

Amazing getaway spot! The cottages are clean and comfortable, well appointed with a beautiful updated kitchen, sectional sofa, plenty of hot water for showering and a beautiful patio for us and our furbabies to hang out with other guests and their furbabies. An extra bonus is an assigned parking spot so you never have to worry about searching for parking. Charlie, the on-site caretaker was super nice and welcoming as well as attentive to our questions/concerns. The cottages even offered us an extra night at a discount and we would've gladly taken it in a heartbeat if we weren't scheduled to move from our house immediately after our stay (honestly I never wanted to leave the cottage). If I could give 10 stars I would. Plus, it's a walking distance to the beach and town. Good restaurants and shops close by too. read more

We loved this place! Very clean, well maintained, and comfy. Our two dogs felt comfortable, and liked the courtyard. We walked to the dog beach, and to the shops and restaurants nearby. We had to fumigate our home which meant that we needed somewhere to stay with our three dogs. I was really happy when I came across Blue Heron Cottages - the pictures looked inviting and I couldn't wait for our little staycation! We booked our stay online. (Easy to use website!) The owners, Christopher and Denise, were on property when we arrived. Throughout our stay they would ask if we needed anything whenever we'd see them in the courtyard. And we were there a lot! The other guests had dogs, too, and the dogs enjoyed playing with each other as well as with the dog toys that were available! Our dogs loved chasing each other on the grass! The property manager, Charlie, was also great!! He was friendly and also made sure we weren't in need of anything. The cottage was very comfortable. The kitchen had everything you might need, including a blender. All of the dishes, cups, pots and pans were in GREAT condition. Parking was very convenient - the spaces are wide so there's plenty of room! Can't wait to book our next staycation!! read more

We have stayed here twice. Denise and Charlie are amazing. This place makes it so simple and you feel at home. We literally have to bring our food and clothes. One slight issue and it was our fault we left 2 windows open our last morning and we have a very vocal dog which we are still trying to train. Charlie actually offered advice for training and tools to help us where most mangers of sites may have not let us back. We shook hands and insured him we would be back with a better behaved 4 legged guest. read more

We recently had our house tented and needed a place to take our selves and our dog, and 2 birds for a couple of nights. We needed a secure place for the dog to be, I didn't want to have to chase him around the block. We also needed to have a comfortable place to relax and didn't want to hear neighbors. Blue Heron did it all. The property is totally fenced in so Fido couldn't take off. The grounds were very clean and comfortable for pets and people. Plenty of bags to clean up with. Our cottage didn't share walls and we didn't hear a peep from our neighbors. Our beds were comfortable, the cottage was very clean and very well stocked. Full size fridge and stove, dishwasher, plates, coffeepot, cookware and microwave. There is an onsite manager on the property, as well. It made a stressful situation into a relaxing stay. read more

Everything you need for a fun beach getaway with (or without) your dog. You can park your car and walk everywhere. Get provisions at Olive Tree market, lots of restaurant options (plenty with dog-friendly outdoor patios), and even and up and coming OB Playhouse.
