Amarillo is full of little gems if you're looking. CCR is one such gem. This cute little retro diner wins my vote for favorite breakfast in the panhandle. The staff is super friendly, and the food needs no hype. It's just plain good. On a Saturday morning, our rowdy party of 11 was easily accommodated, even with a seemingly full dining room. We were greeted with baskets of delicious cinnamon rolls and all the coffee we could drink. The eggs are superb any way you get them. The breakfast menu is perfectly complete - traditional favorites, scrambles, burritos and everything in between. Orange juice is served in a frosty mason jar. Cinnamon rolls and biscuits were ideal on paper, but they were vile. Hard and stale, came in at noon on Saturday. Biscuits were thin and dense, would not recommend. I ordered the wets, which were fries that were doused in thick white gravy, that tasted like flour with just a dash of salt. I also got the chicken fried steak, it was okay, but too much gravy, so it got very soggy within minutes. That's my fault though I should have asked for it on the side. The person I was with got the fried catfish, it was salty, flaky, and extremely soft in a strange way. Would not recommend, however, the restaurant was clean, and had wonderful service. My husband and I stopped at this restaurant for a dinner as we passed through Amarillo. I ordered a grilled cheese and my husband a burger, these are usually pretty safe choices for an unknown eatery , I mean difficult to mess up, right? However ,I was proved wrong ,when my grilled cheese arrived looking limp and pale , it could have hardly touched the pan.There was little cheese and it was pretty poor quality .I ate a few bites and left the remainder ,I did eat the fries as I was hungry and my small bowl of $3.25 coke slaw which turned out to be the tastiest item on our table. Now to the burger.......... The sweet waitress asked my husband how he would like his burger cooked , he replied , 'medium'. When it arrived it was overcooked and looked like cardboard. My husband asked the manager for some mayo who returned and deposited an empty bottle of Mayo on the table. We waited for him to replace this ,once we had gained his attention to alert him of his mistake! My husband ate 1/2 the burger and gave up on the remainder .When the waitress arrived to bring our check , I told her that my sandwich was pretty poor and I was not very happy. My husband complained about his burger too . She apologized and went to seek the manager.On return she said he had taken 25% off the bill , actually he had only tAllen a couple of $$'s off the grilled cheese. What an awful experience and terrible food . I would advise fast food for anyone looking for a good burger before visiting the Calico County Restaurant . We paid near $25 for 3 people. More than enough food to satiate us, lots to choose from the menu and they serve more than just breakfast too, staff were quick and competent, coffee was alright, not too much to complain about. It does start to get loud and busy in there near 8:00-9:00 in the morning, and I assume it gets worse later on, but that's just how that is. Got there at about 8:00 a.m. for reference. read more

Honestly, I wasn't a fan but everyone else liked it. They provide rolls and cinnamon rolls on the table when you arrive. The menu was priced a bit higher than I think the food is worth, but sometimes you just go for family or friends and deal with it. I ordered a hamburger steak and they cook onions into the burger which I have never seen done before and it wasn't stated on the menu, so I was picking onions out of my food the whole time. 11/13/17 This evening I had my first disappointing meal here. Both the food and the service were lackluster. I had come previously for the chicken fried chicken which was very good and decided to come back and try the chicken fried steak. The meat itself had good flavor and a nice crunchy outside but the gravy, squash, and mashed potatoes left much to be desired. I forgot that I have had the mashed potatoes before and didn't care for them. They are very dry and lumpy and not that hot. I may have also had the squash in the past and forgot. It isn't just cooked squash, it is more like a casserole. On the menu it just says baked squash. It's got something else in it like bread or cornmeal or something. Both the squash and the mashed potatoes tasted and had the texture of a rather gummy dressing. If I remember, I won't order them again. Someone else mentioned the food being salty and I have to agree. Even the best of meals that I have had here have been on the salty side which is not very healthy, especially for older people or anyone with high blood pressure. I'm not saying I won't come back here because everything else I've had here was great, I just need to remember to avoid certain things. 11/28/17 Another disappointing meal, sadly. I was in a soup mood but saw they had Chicken Pot Pie so I got it. It was very liquidy so I thought, oh good it's kind of like soup, just what I wanted! It tasted like canned chicken soup, that unique flavor, not like fresh cooked. The meat and veggies tasted canned also. The crust on top was excellent but there was no crust under it so it wasn't really a pie, just a bowl of canned soup with some good crust on top. See photo. The lettuce on the side was wilted, leathery, unedible. I usually eat any greens on the side. The rolls were good as always. I got beans and rice as my side but the beans also tasted canned, not homemade. The rice was undercooked, crunching between my teeth. That's not acceptable for a restaurant that gives the impression they're serving home cooked food. I don't understand how a restaurant that can serve delicious beef liver, chicken livers, catfish and chicken & dumpling soup can serve such mediocre pot pie. I'll give them another chance but I'm not sure if I will go back if I get another meal like this. Maybe they are trying to cut costs but if they start serving food that doesn't taste homemade they're going to lose their wonderful reputation they spent years building up. read more

This is a long time favorite of mine from when I lived in Amarillo. I have many fond memories of eating here with my grandparents. Never had a bad experience, food was always excellent, staff was always great and love that old country, homey feel this place has always had. Tasted like it was just picked out of a lake! No ice, just hot lake water. Once that we had the waitress, we didn't see her again for another 30 minutes. All laughing and staff on their phones. Food was cold, and rock hard. Chicken strips. How do you mess them up? Well, somehow, they did. Undercooked. Waitresses were impatient and rude. Bathrooms are just gross. Walls are dirty. Worst service in my life anywhere. The tables are so close together that the people at the next table are bumping elbows with you. You have to ask management to get a waiter to come get your drink order half an hour after being seated. Then ask for your drinks multiple times. The quality of the food (if you ever get it) has gone way down hill. The prices have gone up significantly. And don't expect a stocked or clean bathroom. Best breakfast spot in Amarillo period! If you want local fresh made good, this place has it. The wait times in my experience have been short. Never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes. Stopped in for lunch today and it was DELICIOUS! I decided on something simple a BLT with "Wets" aka fries with country gravy. The gravy was SOOO good! My boyfriend had the Fried Catfish with green beans and chicken fried corn on the cob. The green beans were REALLY good, smokey ham flavor and super tender.
