We are visiting from the DFW area and came by to try this place out and it was delicious. The service was great and we actually got there just before the crowd picked up. The building would be a definition of a dive, but it's kept clean and they have a really hard working staff. I ordered the jalapeño chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes and corn. Literally one of the top chicken fried steaks I've ever had. Amazing! Not to spicy, perfect heat level. The mashed potatoes were so good. Tasted homhomemade like mom just mashed them in the kitchen. Walked in and we were greeted by the owner. He explained what they were famous for and how he made all his different gravy. We ordered the sampler...OMG! The hatch "gravy" was almost like salsa but not. Fantastic flavor and not overly spicy. The jalapeño gravy was so flavorful and creamy. Plain 'ol cream gravy was superb. CF steaks were cooked perfectly and were not dry at all. Ordered okra, mashed potatoes, and red beans, all of which were better than your normal sides. Also came with a slice of Texas toast. Dessert was offered, Fried Pecan Pie, but we were so full we had to decline :( Decor is typical western and is a great atmosphere. Restrooms were clean and accessible. Our waitress was super friendly and our tea glasses were never less than half full. Overall, this place is worth making an out of the way detour to!! read more

Driving across the desert on a move back to Austin, my Airbnb host recommended this place and it felt quintessential TEXAS to me. Imagine walking into a backwoods meemaws house... wood paneling, taxidermy birds, and a bunch of tables with seating... this place is charming! I had amazing service even though I arrived 30 minutes before closing time. I ordered a 10 oz ribeye (which was cooked to perfection!) and it came with 2 sides ($27). I opted for the house salad and their sweet roasted corn... and then I ordered it with a side of fries..: which were freshly cut potatoes that were deep fried! washed it all down with a Dr Pepper. Oh, I almost forgot the homemade Texas toast which I let soak in the steak juice. Paying under $40 for a meal like this was an absolute treat. Passing thru on way home from a ski trip and so glad we stopped here. Hubby got the sampler chicken fried steak with fries and pan fried corn. It was all delicious. I got the Dana's steak salad and it was very good and fresh. The waitress was very good as well. We will definitely visit again when in the area. Oh and the prices are reasonable. read more

VERY good & tender, the baked sweet potato was perfect and okra was good. We were glad we shared the meal because it was just enough and we splurged and shared the Fried Pecan Pie between 4 of us. Food is very good. We get steaks which are cooked to order, Chicken fried steaks are great! The decor is so Texas. The wait staff knows what they are doing. They can mix and match any combo a person wants. Very friendly, professional and fun to know. Kat is our personal favorite! But everyone is good. People in Amarillo must not have taste buds. Literally have no idea how this place has decent ratings. The smell outside should have been an indicator. It's next to a large animal vet clinic, so smells like poop. Service was fine, people were nice. Gross fatty chopped steak, the steak fingers were falling apart and gooey. The veggies were chewy and hard at the same time. The green beans tasted like they had been cooked in an old pot that had been seasoned with crab boil a few years ago and then were left out. We went to dinner here on a Thursday evening. There was no wait at 6 pm, the host was quick, the waitress was super attentive, the food was flavorful and of high quality. The customers were all very happy and the vibes were positive. I got the green chili fried chicken breast and fried okra with sweet potato fries. I wish I had ordered the chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy, like my Mom and Dad. They said it was so tender and delicious . This used to be one of our favorite places. The chicken fry was the best. A few months ago went and after a particularly long wait (they were busy) the chicken fry was raw, there was blood all in the gravy. The waitress eventually brought an almost completely cooked one. Well tried it again last night. The chicken fry was excellent but mine and my sister's sweet potato was so burned we couldn't even eat them. We spent the night in Amarillo, TX.  I had heard about this place called Green Chili Willy's Grill, so of course we had to try it.  I had heard really good things about it, so I was expecting great things.  We were staying off interstate 40 and the restaurant turned out to be about 11 miles south of us (this better be good).  When we got there we found there was about a 20 - 25 minute wait. That was ok, they have a very large room with seating to accommodate people.  Obviously, they are very popular.  The atmosphere has a very West Texas feel.  Very comfortable.  The waitress was very friendly.  There seemed to be a lot of local regulars here.  Lynette ordered a small version of the traditional chicken fried steak.  They also offer a green chili version.  I ordered a 10 Oz strip steak, medium rare.  With my steak I also ordered green beans and a baked potato.  Texas Toast also comes with the meal.  The Green beans were average, nothing special.  The baked potato was large and came with a generous amount of butter in it.  A cup of cheese and a packet of sour cream came on the side.  The potato was very good.  The steak was cooked properly and was very flavorful. It tasted like it was cooked over wood with a hint of wood flavor coming through.  It wasn't like going to a fancy steak house good, but at $20, it was a good steak.  Lynette's baked potato was just like mine. Her mixed vegetables were average, like something that came frozen in a bag.  Her chicken fried steak was disappointing.  The gravy was good, but her first remark was, "the breading looks dark".  And it was. In fact, in spots it looked burnt, something you don't expect from something deep fried.  Obviously, they were using their cooking oil too long and leaving the chicken fried steak in the oil too long.  My sample bite of the chicken fried steak seemed kind of dried out.  And then there was the Texas Toast.  It wasn't toasted too long, because then the toast would have been too dark and just broken apart.  It wasn't under toasted because then it would have been too soft to be toast.  Instead, the color appeared correct, but the texture was off.  It actually took effort to pull it apart and it was "chewy".  Chewy isn't the texture you expect from toast,  it's more like what you would expect from stale bread that has been toasted.  At the end of the meal we sat a very long time before we saw our waitress and had to ask for the bill.  When paying at the counter I found out they couldn't add a tip to our check.  They actually had to charge my card a second time in order to leave a tip with my card. So was this a terrible experience.....no.  if I were a local, I might come on a somewhat regular basis.  Maybe not for chicken fried steak, but the steak was good and food on other people plates looked good.  But would I travel the 11 miles south of interstate 40 to experience this restaurant......probably not. read more

Tried this joint out. Staff were friendly. Place is pretty small, you might want to avoid peak dining hours. Green Hatch Chiles and sweet corn were both really tasty, steaks were flavorful but came out cold (?). I had the 10oz sirloin steak. Despite being a sirloin, it was one of the best steaks I've had in a while. It was juicy with a nice sear - grilled to perfection. We stopped on our way out west and on the way to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park just south of there. Waitress was nice, great service, country fried steaks were awesome. I had the country fried steak with jalapenos and it was great. My wife had the original country fried steak and liked it. My three kids all liked their food. Reasonable prices. Restaurant inside is about what I expected for a restaurant in the Texas Panhandle, rustic with good decorations Locals all eating there which tells me it is a great place to eat.
