Calico's has a old school country western diner feel to it. I was promptly greeted by the hostess and was sat within minutes. My waitress took a while to arrive at my table however she was very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. I ordered the Calico pulled pork sandwich. It does not have much of a description on the menu but I ordered it because it had the Calico name in front of it. The sandwich surprised me. It was served cold with hot gravy fries. The sauce is mixed in the pork offers a sweet and sassy taste to it. Plus, the gravy for the fries was thick and hearty. The sandwich is also served with lettuce and tomatoes. A good friend of mine invited me out for lunch today and suggested this place. Well the place is like an old fashioned diner as far as t he layout and décor. The server was great and had a good attitude The food was good and more like a Cracker Barrel style yet without the huge and loud crowd. We've been eating here for years and the quality is just going downhill. Not to mention the portion sizes. My husband ordered the large chicken fry (that used to be so big he'd have to give some to the dogs) was smaller than my palm today. When you pay nearly 18.00 for a large meal you expect to get a large meal. He called the restaurant and spoke with the Mgr. They suggested driving across town for another one. No thanks. I'd rather not waste more gas on you. They overcooked my rice and they've done something to the fish too. Not for the better. The only thing they've done is lose a long time customer. read more

The breakfast special is amazing and includes 2 eggs your way, hash browns or country potatoes, your choice of biscuits and gravy, pancakes, French toast or toast and a sausage party and bacon and drink for $7.99. It's been several years since we had been to Calico County due to moving away. Recently were in town and stopped by for a late lunch. The restrooms were nasty and the overall interior has been let go run down. The food was greasy and over seasoned. The bread was hard not too good. Very disappointed with the overall experience. Well I gave them the benefit of a doubt and went back to try them again, don't have to do that again. The food was bland and barely warm, definitely not to food safe temperature! Rolls were dry and tasted old but the icing on the cake was our server pulled out a chair and sat down to take our order! Not just our table but the two other tables too! I stopped by to get breakfast at approximately 10:30, Tuesday, June 18, 2019. As the hostess was seating us the first thing that caught my attention was how many tables needed cleaning. I had to put my coat on it was so cold. I ask our server Joseph Bills to have someone adjust the temperature. He acted as if he didn't hear me. My dining guest had to repeat it and he barely acknowledged her. We asked for coffee and he bought spoons that were sticky. I asked a staff member to bring us clean silverware instead he came back and told me he let our server know. I told the server (Joseph Bills)about the dirty silverware and he proceeded to insult My intelligence and tell me they were water-spots. I corrected him and pointed out you can feel the good particles on the silverware. His attitude was horrible I don't know if he treats everyone like this or just black people. The sad thing under previous ownership this was one of Amarillo's best restaurants. I decided not to subject myself to any further abuse. I asked to speak to the manager on My way out. After waiting for her I explained the situation. She apologized but never attempted to keep me as a customer. I asked for her leadership phone number to contact and she informed me that she couldn't give it to me and would take my number. Horrible service do not waste your time coming here. By the way when I spoke to the manager site she also told me that staff manages itself in an effort to keep me from escalating my complaint. read more

Apparently you have to be male to get service here. The hostess was on the phone when my son and I (a young woman) walked in. Instead of seating us when she hung up, she ignored us and walked away. 2 others made eye contact with me but never came over, never said a word. So we went out to the car to get a quarter for the jukebox, which we lost bc there's no sign saying it doesn't work. We kept waiting, still being ignored, until a middle aged man came in and 2 people ran over to seat him immediately. When I complained about being ignored, no one apologized. The 1 waitress who finally seated us was the only person who was remotely polite and the only one who didn't seem to absolutely hate her job. Our waiter wouldn't even make eye contact. I'll start by noting that I'm not normally a breakfast eater. At home, a simple bowl of cereal and milk, and a cup of coffee, is my daily start. When traveling, and staying in a motel with a continental breakfast buffet (I was when in Amarillo), I still eat a light breakfast before showering and dressing for the day. I had a breakfast business meeting to arrange, and asked around as to where a good breakfast and reasonably quiet work setting might be found. The local response was unanimous-- Calico Country Restaurant. Although they serve three meals a day, Calico Country seems to be THE local breakfast stop. A few minutes before 8:00 am, the place was crowded, but a table for two required no wait. My plan was to have another cup of coffee; nothing more which might slow an important discussion. Once seated, a basket of warm cinnamon rolls and a full pot of coffee were brought to our table as we viewed the menu. My guest (from Dallas), however, had a very different take on what constitutes a solid breakfast. He ordered first, and proceeded to request three fried eggs, three sausage links, biscuits with gravy and a side of grits. Perhaps I should order a bit more? Ordered were the ham and cheese scrambled eggs, and this turned out to be a good choice. The scrambled egg platter was fresh, made from real whole eggs and generous, loaded with ham and American cheese. The eggs themselves were nicely enhanced by a bit of sour cream, before being scrambled-- something I need to do the next time I make scrambled eggs at home. All told, my breakfast was delicious, and still light enough to not slow me down for either our discussion or the busy day ahead. Although I didn't visually detect anything out of the ordinary in his breakfast feast, my guest seemed very happy with his breakfast, as well. In fact, he was so happy that the business discussion turned out more favorably than was anticipated! While fortunately not the sort of "bargain breakfast" that one might find at a Denny's, the food was very good, the portions large and the prices reasonable. Service was also very good-- fast, attentive and friendly. Calico Country Restaurant is in close proximity to Tyler's Barbeque, a place which I consider to be "world class." What are the odds that in small-city Amarillo, two restaurants this good would be a block apart? read more

It is with great sadness that I write this review. My family always enjoyed coming here for breakfast. I noticed pretty quickly after the place was sold that the pancakes tasted different .I am diabetic and pretty picky about the choice of carbs I put in my body. calico was THE ONLY place I would eat pancakes.I looked forward to it about 5 times a Yr. then I noticed the bacon that is STILL a wonderful THICK cut tasted different. This is the only place I order bacon too. I did ask the waitress if things had changed and they're ordering of bacon and pancake mix? It was confirmed that both have changed. I did other meals there too. The catfish is wonderful, chicken fried steak too much batter had to send one back though it was the size of the plate size of the steak was 3/4. I ordered the large one so I could have some to take home and this was not to be the case anymore. Overall, I would still send people there in general that I won't be going for breakfast unless something changes back to you with that used to have and yes I could tell a difference. So two stars for breakfast 3 1/2 stars for everything else. So long Calico County I miss your breakfasts. And you're only 3/4 of a mile from my house so you were very handy. read more

First time been here but would not recommend to anyone. Service is horrible!! Waitress is all over the place and it not even crowded. We accidentally spill hot chocolate drink. We admit it our fault but waitress don't bother clean the floor. We basically have to sit and eat our whole meal like that! Plates they brought out was dirty! Bathroom was disgusting! I'll start by saying I'm not an Amarillo native so maybe that's why I didn't find this place particularly appealing. However I do enjoy southern cooking and still feel like Calico fell below the bar. The food wasn't awful but there was nothing great about it. It reminded me of Luby's. I had some decently flavored chicken strips and fresh veggies with overly buttered rolls to start off. It wasn't the worst meal I've had and the lunch price was 9 bucks so there's that, but there was nothing about the experience that made me think "wow, what a gem!". This review would have been a three star review however there were flies everywhere inside and at our table and even on our way out which was kind of gross and led to the two star review. If I pass through Amarillo again I think I'll go to Tyler's instead. read more

Great small-town restaurant with good country food and reasonable prices. Stumbled upon this restaurant while driving around looking for a place to have lunch. We were seated promptly and were greeted by our waitress right away. I ordered a sweet tea while my wife ordered an "Arnold Palmer" - half lemonade and half iced tea. My sweet tea was way too syrupy and thick! Ew. I ended up trying to drink it and gave up after two sips. It was like someone had poured a cup of sugar into a glass of water. The "Arnold Palmer" was delicious, though. They bring a basket of bread out before your meal. Half will be dinner rolls and half are cinnamon rolls. Do yourself a favor and skip the dinner rolls. They're dry and super bland. The cinnamon rolls are a bit better. I ordered the traditional-sized Chicken-fried Chicken ($10) with a side of fries and gravy and a country-fried corn on the cob. The chicken-fried chicken was moist and tasty. The breading wasn't too thick and the seasoning was just right. The fries and gravy was delicious and probably the best part of the meal. The country-fried corn on the cob is exactly what it sounds like. A corn on the cob deep-fried. It was.. interesting. Definitely something you want to try if you've never had it. Once is enough, though. The corn is of the frozen variety and therefore isn't very firm. Pros: pretty good country cooking; lots of side dishes Cons: you get bigger portions of better food at Cracker Barrel for less money. read more

We were visiting Amarillo for the annual tattoo convention and wanted to try some local restaurants. Yelp lead us right to Calico County. We were so glad we went! We arrived around 10:15 on Sunday morning. There were a few families waiting ahead of us but they seem to have a great system to turn tables quickly. We were sat within a few minutes of checking in. We were served a basket of warm cinnamon rolls with our drinks. So yummy, we ate them all. The serving sizes were good, neither me or my old man finished our breakfasts. At the start of my wife and I's first visit to Calico County, we witnessed something I've never seen anywhere before. We saw an elderly woman being seated at a booth all by herself, then immediately numerous staff came, sat down, and talked to her. From bus boys to mangers, they all came and seemed so interested in her. My wife and I were convinced she was the owner. But not being sure, we asked our waitress and she informed us that the elderly woman and her husband were regulars and she just recently lost her husband. Seeing her face light up and the sincere care all the staff had for that woman left a great impression on me. The food is fantastic and this place has a great old fashioned feel to it. Prices are very reasonable and portions are always more than you can eat in one sitting(which is good). From our first this has been the place to go. read more

Seeking out a place to grab a bit of down home, non-chain, tummy warming food on a cold North Texas day, I once again leaned on my fellow Yelpers. And, once again, I was not disappointed. Reviews seemed quite positive on the Calico. And, since I wasn't far away (Is any place in Amarillo REALLY far from anyplace else in Amarillo? I mean.. 15 minutes, 20 at the most from most sides of town to the other. I digress) I decided to swing by and give it a shot. When I came in, at around 4 or so, if memory serves, the place was mostly empty, save 3 or 4 families and a couple. I was seated very quickly and the staff were very friendly. Vanessa was the young lady that I had the pleasure as being my wait-staff. She is freaking awesome. Gave me some recommendations based on how hungry I was and the like. I told her I was looking for some soup. I was going to go with the Cheese and Broccoli (I think. Hey, it's 5AM, and I am tired...) but then she threw me a curve ball. How about combining that with the Texas Potato soup? What. Huh? Trust me she said. I did. Best. Effing. Soup. Ever. Well, at least this side of the Mississippi away from Mom's homemade soup. You know the deal. I had that along with the meat loaf and a few other items. Dude, I'm here to tell you all I needed after that was a pillow. I left there full, warm, and feeling as if I found some distant family. The next time I roll through Amarillo, I will definitely stop by. I highly recommend Calico Country. Stomach ruining-ly delicious. We live in San Francisco and it is so hard to find comfort 'mom & pop' style restaurants. My wife is from Amarillo and so every time we come to see her family, we HAVE to come here. The staff is super friendly and the ambience gives a quiet and relaxing, home on the range feel (Originally from the East Coast so I have no idea what else to refer the feeling to). This is my wife's grandfather's favorite place and first came here a few years ago. I will forever remember and refer to it as 'Jars' from the sign. Calico, see you in 2 weeks. read more

Every time we go back to Amarillo we try to make a stop at our favorite restaurants with the family. The last couple of times we've visited Calico County we've been sadly disappointed. The food is still great and deserving of 5 stars, but the service and just how the restaurant is managed is probably the worst I have ever experienced. Usually you can blame a bad experience on just an off day by the staff or restaurant, but when it happens on more than one consecutive occasions it can make a business lose customers, as is this case. This last time I was reluctant to go to breakfast at Calico and boy should I have listened to my gut. We were seated in the very back and just waited... and waited... and waited until a server that wasn't even on our table asked if we had been helped. The worst part of the experience wasn't the service that we weren't receiving, but the complete lack of attention that was being paid to a military veteran that was seated nearby. The hostess basically sat him down on top of us even though the restaurant was not busy. We did not mind as he was kind and just wanted to eat and read his book which he probably read cover to cover by the time they served him a cup of coffee. What could have easily been a 45 minute meal turned into an hour and a half. Needless to say, we are striking Calico County off our list. read more

Been on the road off and on for much of the time since April 2014 and was in need of some home cooking. This place seemed to fit the bill at first glance on Yelp, my trusty companion that I use daily on my ANDROID phone. As you walk in it feels like some place you've been many times before. Ragged and worn wood floors and counters but, homey and comforting without being dirty as some diners tend to be. I especially liked the signed photos on the wall of George Strait, Neil McCoy and many other country artists who have all visited Calico County Restaurant. There's an old jukebox in the corner as you walk in and photos of Route 66 and other paraphernalia on the wall, a route that I've traveled a lot lately. Now, on to the food. I was perusing the menu and noticed the Irish Stew among a plethora other choices. First off, I love a good beef stew so I asked the counter attendant if it was ground beef or chunks and she politely said she thought it was chunks. Great! I ordered the Irish Stew after asking if it was made by real Irish people, at which she gave me a courtesy laugh though not condescending. I also ordered a half of a Cobb Salad at her recommendation as she said the full was just way too big. So, they also look out for your best interest, which I appreciated. In addition to those items, instead of the usual side salad that comes with the stew, I ordered the mashed potatoes, because everyone knows mashed potatoes with Irish Stew on top is amazing-ga-zoinks! And, boy was I right. The stew meat was tender, just like mom's used to be. The Cobb Salad was good, like you'd expect from a better quality diner. The perfect meal aside from the stew being a little salty, as most diner food goes. But, hey, that's why I ordered the mashed potatoes alongside to temper the saltiness. Calico's showed up with some pretty good reviews- and i have to say that Yelp was right again! great southern home cooking and reasonable prices. while you are waiting for your food to come out, you are served a free basket of rolls, cornbread AND cinnamon rolls! all were warm and fresh! there were three of us and we all enjoyed our orders! chicken fried chicken, pot roast and chicken with a mushroom gravy. of course we were beyond stuffed after inhaling the pre-dinner carbs and meals...but we still found room for some homemade desserts- peach cobbler (with blue bell ice cream) and chocolate cake. there isn't much to see in amarillo. so if you are driving through, this is a great place to stop and enjoy the food and friendly service! it's not too far off the highway and the sign outside is a photo op within itself! read more

What a great find! In the mood for breakfast at 10:28 and they stop serving bfast at 10:30. They sat us and accommodated us even though we're we right under the wire. We got a basket of cinnamon rolls with our coffee!! Breakfast appetizers :). Food came out quickly and was delicious. The Daily Special is the perfect breakfast and a great deal. My partners had the veggie omelet and said it was perfect. Great selection of side items- any breakfasty side you can think of, even raisin toast. Our server was especially attentive and sincere. Im sad to give a poor rating because the waitress was nice. But it was a hit and miss situation. Free cinnamon rolls yum. Husband asked for blueberries to go with his oatmeal and they had no problem. Old flat biscuits with dried edges, hard outside, and sparse soft inside, not so great. Luke warm gravy with one piece of sausage in it, not so great. Scrambled eggs with cheese were great. I think the bacon was deep fried bacon. Interesting twist but mine was overcooked so it tasted charred. Maybe we can at the wrong time. read more

Stopped for dinner on a motorcycle trip. It was 105 degrees and I waited WAY too long for a glass of water. They took my order and I still didn't have water. And they brought my check without once refilling my empty glass. Sides were excellent I had beans and baked squash. Ordered chicken fried steak with brown gravy but it came with white. I topped my oil off in the parking lot and could not find a trash can to toss the empty, thinking I was doing the right thing I went inside to discard the jug....."you need to find some other place to throw that." This place has been one of my all-time favorites since I was a child. Every time I've returned to Amarillo, I've asked to go to Calico for some of their Irish Stew. It's magnificent.
