i have tried luthiers in the past and have had negative experiences.work was satisfactory but experience was poor. This was my first experience with Guitar Repair Long Island, and I have to say... it was a pretty great one! I wasn't too sure how the system worked, but I later found out it was by way of appointment. I had shown up unknowingly, and Erik was gracious enough to asses my guitar and take it in. I got a full setup, with a floating bridge, and a level & crowning. My guitar has never sounded better. His work is excellent, clean, and with close attention to detail. He was able to quickly set up the guitar and went above and beyond to polish, vacuum, and replace the battery for me free of charge. You'll select a pick up time when it is ready where he will fully explain the repair and give you time to test out the guitar to make sure you are satisfied. The owner, Erik, scratched my brand new Gibson and then denied it. I brought the guitar in for a setup, and was told that it would take a few days. To my surprise, I received a call less than 24 hours later saying that the guitar was done. Great! The setup was pretty good. I had to tweak the action a little bit more, but it was a solid setup. Mind you, a setup is something any average person could do if they take a bit of time to buy the right tools and do their research, and it's something I've always done myself, but I figured I'd use a professional for the first time in my life. After all, I had just spent $1500 on a beautiful new Gibson, and I figured it deserved a professional's touch. The problem arose when I brought it back home and noticed the 3/4 inch scratch on my headstock, which clearly came from Erik not being careful when removing the strings from my guitar. There was also what looked to be a sort of dent/scratch below that. I only restrung the guitar once before I had brought it here, and I was neurotic about not damaging my brand new Gibson in the process. If I had scratched the guitar that I had just spent $1500 on, then best believe that I would have noticed it and been kicking myself in the butt about it. That's why I felt very uncomfortable after emailing Erik and having him tell me that he was "confident" that he didn't cause the damage, and that "many scratches will occur to a black headstock. It's best to just live with it." Well, it's been almost 6 months, and the black headstock is still spotless aside from the scratch Erik put there. Telling your customer to live with the damage you caused isn't good business... He seemed like an okay guy and has plenty of great reviews, and so I tried to convince myself that perhaps he's right and that somehow I had scratched the guitar during the 45 minutes I spent meticulously changing the strings. I even left him a glowing review at first because I wanted to support a young person's growing business. Alas, as the days have gone by and I've had to look at my scratched headstock every time I've played my guitar, my sympathy has worn thin, and I've come to accept the fact that I simply got screwed over by the guy that was supposed to help me improve my guitar. It's really a wonderful and beautiful instrument, and the more I appreciate it the more it bothers me that it has damage that could have been avoided by simply doing the setup myself. If anyone is going to scratch my instrument, then it should be me, and definitely not the guy that I just paid to do work on it. I'm considering some scratch-remover solution, but it is a pretty deep scratch, and I doubt that scratch-remover solution will do the guitar any good, if not flat out harm the finish further. I really would have appreciated if Erik admitted that he accidentally nicked my guitar. Mistakes happen. I can live with that. What sucks is the fact that I was straight up lied to about it like I'm some sort of fool. I now have to deal with the fact that my otherwise spotless instrument was scratched by someone I paid to maintain it, and all I got in return was a slimmer wallet and an insult to my intelligence. read more

This was the first time I did business with Guitar Repair Long Island. When I called, I explained the disappointment that I had with another local guitar repair service's work and their poor customer service. Erik was extremely professional on the phone, and he set an appointment for me to bring in my guitar, for him to evaluate. He listened carefully to me as I described my guitar playing style and the concerns regarding action, playability, and general setup. I explained that my guitar' action was extremely low causing buzzing of the strings, and the previous rich full sound of my Martin HD28E Retro was non existent and sounded dull. He agreed with me, and went to work on my new guitar with his technical experience and magic making all the fine, skilled necessary setup adjustments, installed new strings, and even polished my guitar. Erik did a great job repairing a Rickenbacker 4003 bass that was brought to him recently. He actually diagnosed it while we waited and determined that the treble pickup was dead and most likely needed a rewind. The pickup had to be sent out to his "pickup guy" for a rewind which was done in a very timely manner and expertly done as well. The end result after Erik reinstalled the pickup and did a few wiring fixes was the killer tone that Rickenbacker basses are famous for was fully restored along with the cleaning and polishing Erik also did it once again looked as good as it sounded. Erik runs a very professional, organized guitar repair business and you get treated with a very personal touch there. You can schedule an appointment on his automated online scheduling system which is very convenient. Erik also sent us several e-mails letting us know status of the repair as it progressed. I've been using Guitar Repair Long Island for a while and have had great experiences. Erik, the owner, make appointments so you know you won't be interrupted as you explain what you need, nor will he be distracted, and that means you get his full attention. And everything he has done for me and my gear has come out exactly as I ask, and often better because he'll take the time to thoroughly go over an instrument before you get it back. I have some expensive guitars and trust him fully with them. In addition, I bought a pretty cheap short scale bass that played "ok", but needed a setup badly. After getting it back, it feels like a significantly more expensive bass than it is; the strings are the perfect height off the fretboard, the tuners are now rock solid...it really is a different and far better instrument. I have told my guitar playing friends about GRLI, and can't recommend them highly enough. read more
