I visited Ed twice since getting my new Martin as a birthday gift. The first time the pick up wasn't working. He fixed it in under five minutes and refused to charge or even submit it for a warrantee payment from Martin. The next time I brought it in was to lower the action. He did so, and it was so reasonably priced. You can tell by every interaction he has with any customer that walks in the store that he is respected, admired, and truly liked! I recently brought my guitar to Ed for a setup and a nut replacement. When I dropped it off, Ed quoted me $150 and said it would take a couple of days. That sounded Avrage , so I agreed. When I returned to pick up the guitar, I brought the quoted amount in cash. At that point, I was told I needed to pay an additional $20 for tax, which was added on top of the original quote. While I understand that sales tax is standard, it would have been helpful to know upfront that the quoted price did not include tax--especially since the majority of the cost was labor. The quality of the work itself was good, and I have no complaints about the actual repair. However, the unexpected additional charge left a negative impression. Clear, all-inclusive estimates go a long way toward building trust and keeping customers returning. read more

The bridge on my one year old Fender acoustic guitar began pulling off the body, and Fender directed me to visit this shop as an Authorized Service Center in order to have a professional provide them with a description of the issue. I was greeted in a manner that would suggest I was a burden for even stepping foot in his shop. When asked if he could take a look at my guitar he said, "that's irreparable, get yourself a new guitar," and turned his back to me before he was even done talking. I asked if he'd be able to tell Fender this so I wouldn't be left with an irreparable guitar. He scoffed and condescendingly replied "no that things toast, you don't even have a case on it. Get yourself a new guitar." (I removed the guitar from its case at my car to not waste time in the shop). I'd like to emphasize that the smallest amount of tact, humility, and professional dialogue goes the distance in the service industry; any industry for that matter. Having just moved to Long Island, I was relieved to find Ed. He's a guitar lover's guitar tech--the kind of guy who could do his job in his sleep, but never would. At my first visit, he installed the strap button I needed in two minutes flat. I also needed a capo, tuner and humidifier, and he took the time to show me how to use the latter. Ed Clarke is a professional. I brought my Stratocaster in to change the nut (is that what they call it?). I can tell easily that he takes pride in what he does and that's important...I don't get that from a lot of people in business today. He not only fixed my guitar but found a couple of other issues and took care of them. He cleaned and tuned the guitar and it now it looks and sounds brandy new :) I highly recommend him. read more

I brought my 1965 Fender Jazzmaster to Ed Clark Guitars for a consultation on what I wanted overhauled. I was nervous to let anyone touch this guitar for many years but, at this point there were things that had to be done. After speaking with Ed I decided to take the plunge and do a complete restore. This included a re-fret, re-wiring, new vintage knobs, fix a tremolo that had been re-installed at some point BACKWARDS and a total refinish. The job took a lot of work and was priced reasonably. The guitar sounds better than ever. It had been re-finished over the years by someone who did a total hack job and now it is freakin beautiful. Highly recommend. read more
