UPDATE 2: It's 8/22/2026 and I still have a dangerous cement hole in my backyard, despite having paid as per the contract, and I have unpaid subcontractors that should have already been paid in March/April! Owner, Danny Smith, is nowhere to be found (I'm still blocked and all related phone numbers do not work) and the Responsible Managing Officer, George Moreno (co-owner), has disassociated his Contractor's license from California Custom Pools and retained an attorney. Of note, Danny Smith does not have his own Contractor's license, as he was operating the business using the RMO's license. California Custom Pool's worker's compensation insurance was canceled 7/25/26 and their Contractor's bond has a cancellation date effective 9/3/26. California Custom Pools has been evicted from their storefront. Many subcontractors have been left unpaid, multiple homeowners left with unfinished projects with no explanation, some homeowners have liens on their homes due to California Custom Pools not paying the subcontractors. Im a homeowner whose project has been abandoned by CA Custom Pools. Despite numerous attempts to figure out why my project was delayed, I kept getting excuse after excuse. When I asked a question they clearly didnt like, I simply did not get a response. It all came to a head in mid-July when the owner, once again, lied to my wife. We did what homeowners should do: CSLB complaint, surety bond claim, bad review, etc. I even called law enforcement to ask what I should do. They spoke directly to Danny Smith. Danny Smith told them that I am "a confused cancer patient" who didnt understand what was going on. That type of behavior, to law enforcement no less, was shocking and shows what kind of people these owners are. I am trying to navigate this extremely stressful situation and my health is suffering. I developed a heart condition requiring lifelong medication and I know the stress was part of what brought it on. Im terrified that my child will fall into this large, unfinished hole in my backyard. One owner has disappeared and the other has lawyered up. Im left to figure out how to pay more money to finish what they abandoned and there are subcontractors who are not paid from work already done. This pool was supposed to be my dream pool where I can spend my remaining days relaxing and resting. CA Custom Pools has taken that from me and taken my hard earned money. They dont care, they are an emabrassment to the pool industry and in my opinion, have no ethics and lack a moral compass. read more

Do not hire California Custom Pools. Danny is a fraud and scammer. From my research, he is being evicted from his office in Temecula, has stopped sending his subcontractors due to owing them thousands of dollars, and has stopped communicating with our phone calls. We still have an empty hole in the ground. He took three large payments and now no show after another. We have contacted all the remaining subcontractors and have been paying them directly to hopefully get our pool completed. We are not the only ones either... he has left at least 25 other families in the same boat with unfinished pools. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!! Although I had to reach out to Adan a few times before getting on schedule, we can vouch that he is a stand up guy. He was professional, patient and answered all our questions while going over various options and explaining what he thought would work best to fix our pool and spa coping. He took measurements twice to be extra accurate and was actually the only contractor that came with tile samples for us to view. Although we decided to go another route, he was very gracious and polite, so I am definitely keeping his info in my back pocket for future projects/repairs. They would promise a subcontractor would be there on a specific day and then no one would show up. This happened repeated times. It took 6 weeks just to wrap up the project with the coping mastic installation. California Custom pools started the build on my pool and everything was fine up until recently, kept being told by Danny the owner that the plumber was scheduled to show up, but he never showed up. Finally got the truth about what was going on that the plumber was owed a lot of money by California Custom pools so he was refusing to do the work understandably. So we worked out that I would pay the plumber directly and that worked out. Now were at the final stage for Plaster/Pebble Tech and once again told we were on the schedule and no show. But we have a bigger problem now Danny the owner wont take calls or answer text so I went by his office this morning there are eviction notices on the door of the business. So I contacted 2 of the main guys and found out that they no longer work for California Custom Pools and that there Subcontractors wont do any work due to no payments. Our experience with them was tremendous, from the initial meeting at our home to discuss our options to the final inspection. George was our project manager and Austin was our designer and these two gentlemen were amazing to do business with and excelled with customer service. They were sure to answer all of our questions and provide us with all the information that we needed. Communication throughout the process was never a problem and they were always available at any time to answer any questions or concerns or provide more details. I'm truly amazed at how fast they moved on this project. They started on August 19th and we had water in the pool on September 21st! Absolutely amazing!! George also had glow in the dark pebble installed in the pool and glow in the dark sand to border the pool. Very cool feature that our kids love!
