In 2014 he built a 60 foot retaining wall to shore up my back yard. 10 years later, there has not been a single problem with it through earthquakes and super heavy rains. Recently, he built a smallish deck for the servicers of my solar equipment that the city required. I had California Deck Builders build a wooden deck and fence in my Burbank re-landscaped backyard this summer and Kobi and his crew did a professional job.  I love my new deck.  His crew worked very hard in the summer heat and if you have a question about anything Cobi responds back very quickly.  I interviewed other deck companies who gave a cheaper bid but I felt more confident with Kobi and there is a reason he has high Yelp reviews. I had an existing balcony deck that I wanted torn down and replaced. While they were generally easy to communicate with via text (which in my opinion doesn't seem to be the most professional way to conduct business), it's hard to give a completely positive rating to a company that won't even come out to look at the job and give a bid. Instead, they wanted me to talk with an engineer before deciding the best way for THEM to proceed. I eventually got them to give me a bid (again sight unseen) and it was about $10,000+ more than other bids. All in all, they seemed relatively easy to communicate with, just not hungry, enthusiastic or willing to put in the effort enough for the job. UPDATE TO BUSINESS RESPONSE: Communication via text was never "agreed" upon. Have you ever "agreed" upon communication via text with any person let alone a business? That even sounds retarded. Why would I even complain about it if it was something I agreed on? It was weird and an unprofessional way to discuss work that potentially costs 25k+. I don't have any problem consulting a engineer and at no time did I express this to Kobi. (Want me to post the texts?) When the builder wants you to consult one before personally looking at the job, you can be sure they severely lack the experience and confidence of a senior professional. They can "spin" it any way they want... but their lackadaisical bid was much higher than their competitors and it was evident they wanted to do as little work for the job as possible. If I was never a customer, it is because I chose to go elsewhere. Their lack of customer service left a lot to be desired. Good luck getting them to your house for the "FREE ESTIMATE" that is advertised at the top and bottom of every page on their website. My husband and I just bought a home. The inspector and appraiser said we needed work done on the front porch in order to bring it up to code. When I brought this to the attention of Kobi, the owner of CDB, he said that the porch was fine and in line with all Los Angeles and California code. I don't even recall how much time he spent helping us, but I can say this - I've never experienced such stellar customer service in my life. Kobi, Richey, and Erika are all a sheer pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them if you want an honest and reliable contractor at a fair price, who proactively contributes great design suggestions, and takes pride in their artisan craftsmanship. We hired them to finish a deck that was started by another general landscape contractor. CDB not only finished it ahead of schedule, but their work exceeded our expectations including professionalism, material selection (ipe), and construction quality. Their work is now the crown jewel of our backyard. Of course they do the obvious stuff (which should be standard, but often is not) - showed up reliably on time, communicated clearly and frequently, cleaned after each day, had a professional setup, worked full days, presented a good solid contract, were very easy to work. But more importantly, Kobi listened to our ideas, carefully considered them, and provided alternatives to consider. For us this included: - Smaller tree opening in the top deck for safety, and can be enlarged later as needed - Various screw options and patterns for visual interest - Alternate bench design to integrate better with the surrounding yard conditions - Various wood transitions and edge condition details - Design solution for concealing the fountain pump with a removable cap that doubled as a step to the upper deck - Cleanly notched wood panels to cover uneven tile installations at the fountain Kobi also connected us with a skilled and licensed electrician who helped us properly ground and reconnect all power in the yard, which were incorrectly installed by the previous contractors we hired. I could go on. At the end of the day, Kobi, Erika and Richie are great people. We were dreading the process of replacing the deck outside our guest house, because we live on a slowly eroding hill, so in order to do it properly we would also need a retaining wall for it to stand on. Add to that the fact that the old deck was about to collapse, and the guest house was occupied by our 90-year-old grandma, and you can see why we were losing sleep over this. What we needed was a deck builder who could also build a retaining wall, and also replace the little overhanging roof that partially enclosed grandma's washer and dryer. From our first meeting with Kobi, it was clear that he had a great aesthetic sense along with his technical knowledge (my wife and I are both in graphics, so we can be sticklers for design.) The crew were always prompt, kept the job site tidy, and did a beautiful job - all while making sure grandma had safe access to the outside world. We went with Trex and a metal rail, because we wanted zero deck maintenance. Now we have a beautiful new deck on a solid retaining wall, and grandma has a mini laundry room which she loves. I chose California Deck Builders after consulting with several deck builders, checking customer reviews and verifying credentials with the California State License Board. The CDB quote ended up being slightly higher than the competitors, but CBD seemed to be the most skilled at building a Trex deck. In fact, Trex gave CDB a "Platinum" rating for their level of expertise and volume of decks installed with this material. This is the highest ranking Trex gives to builders. The final product was superior. I was extremely happy with the final result. The workman Auhd disassembled the existing deck in a neat and methodical manner. He then rebuilt the entire deck by himself! Kobi built the beautiful cable railing that allows a much broader unobstructed view. The job took 2 weeks instead of the projected 3 weeks. The entire project turned out just as I imagined it would. Although the price was higher than CBD competitors, I believe the quality and design is well worth it! *Concrete Retaining Wall Review Let me start by saying, the reviews here are real and the 5 stars are well deserved. I had CDB come out for a quote for building a retaining wall in our front yard - over 25 feet long, right under three feet tall. Erika from California Deck Builders came and the quote was more of a consultation. We chatted about structural needs of the wall, exactly how it was going to be built, etc. I had another concrete specialist company come for a quote - they were late and guy measured and didn't even speak to me, ask questions, etc. In the end the quotes were almost exactly the same and I just had a better feeling about CDB. They built an amazing wall (filled with concrete & rebar iron), stucco finish and it looks nothing short of professional. This wall had to follow a downward slope and it was straight as an arrow. We are THRILLED we went with CDB and I am sure you will be too. They built this wall in under 5 days - excellent turnaround. We are definitely using them in the future. read more

Kobi with California Deck Builders gets every star I'm allowed to give him, and more. My wife and I had previously foolishly trusted a landscape designer that bilked us out of money and time and left us almost in tears before we were able to fix all the damage he had caused. So, when it came to find someone to build our deck, we were *especially* cautious. We interviewed multiple builders - right from the start, Kobi was the head of the pack. Not only did he have very competitive prices, he was actively engaged and offered several design suggestions to make the deck even more attractive. Still, after our previous experience, I was still paranoid. So, I asked Kobi if there were any previous clients I could call and talk to myself. He didn't provide me one or two... he gave me FIVE. And every one of them couldn't find enough great things to say about Kobi, his quality and his professionalism. So, of course we hired him. The deck is 30' by 15', plus a French door into our bedroom, and three outdoor electrical sockets in our backyard. He started exactly when he said he would. He finished ahead of schedule. The deck is beautiful. But he went far beyond that: --At first, we were going to have him build a pergola over the deck, but decided that, in order to save money, we would build the pergola ourselves. So, even though this meant less money for Kobi, he was still happy to sink the four supports for the pergola when he build the deck, at no charge! *And* he gave us some very cool tips on construction and some tips on how to make the posts look even cooler. --When he installed the French door, he left the bedroom absolutely spotless with a flawless paint job inside. Outside, we didn't have any of the original housepaint, so he took a paint chip and had it matched so that the outside matches excellently. --And THEN, without being asked, he used that paint to touch up a part of our house that had just been a big unpainted patch (from some previous damage that had been patched up). --And THEN he installed three outdoor lamps that my wife had bought (none of this was in the original agreement, just out of the goodness of his heart). --My wife was so happy, she made Kobi and his crew a batch of her amazing brownies. Kobi called me that night to let me know how much that meant to him and his crew. In summary: Kobi of California Deck Builders is not just a true professional, he doesn't just do really beautiful work, but he goes above and beyond to put that extra bit of attention in to let you know that he really cares about his work and his relationship with his clients.
