Was in the neck of woods so came back to this California Sandwiches in Vaughan. The sandwich is just as good as before, nice tender veal, nice bite and crispness of the kaiser bun but it could have used more sauce in the sandwich. You can't go wrong with this location or any of their other locations. I've been going to their York Mills location and it is just as good if not better. This is the place or franchise that has a go to veal sandwich And I recommend any of you to try it. All female crew, let's hear it for the ladies Sandwich sizes either regular or mini with extra toppings (roppini, mushrooms, peppers, cheese, etc) at an extra cost. Deluxe version includes lettuce, tomato and mayo. Maybe it's me but it seems many sandwich shops are now charging extra for normally what was included lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc; baahh Ordered the regular steak & onions. Steak was thinly sliced in a tomato base sauce, more like a sliced beef sandwich instead of steak. Nice beefy flavor profile and the onions were firm. I have had this eatery bookmarked for the longest time. I finally took the plunge and visited the place last night. I was in the area to pick up a gently used paper shredder. I already have one that works well. However, the container is small and the frequent emptying of it got to me. My new one worked out nicely. After having picked up my shredder, I was hungry and needed dinner. This eatery was five minutes away from the seller's home. Perfect! California Sandwiches is located in a plaza, across from a Petro-Canada station that I recently frequented. This plaza has a Denny's and Tim Horton's. I parked and walked in. The eatery is bright and clean. I walked up to the counter and immediately placed my order. I have fond memories as a teenager of my dad buying me a veal sandwich from a food truck, so I could have it for lunch the following day at school. I loved this sandwich so much. The veal was tender. It also came with mushrooms and peppers, with a cheerful tomato sauce. Naturally, I went with the veal sandwich. The last time I ordered a veal sandwich, I pilled on so many veggies that they all slid out of my sandwich. I learned my lesson this time. I went with mushrooms only. I got a Diet Dr. Pepper. You don't see too many of those. When I do, I'm at a gas station! You basically help yourself by selecting the beverage that you want from the fridge. I paid by debit. You can also pay by credit card and cash. There was one other customer waiting for his order. I tried figuring out where I wanted to sit. I chose a table with leather seats on one side, and wooden chairs on the other. I was facing one of the two TVs in the restaurant, so I could watch and eat. I was impressed at how quickly my sandwich was made. I had barely settled into my seat and was checking my e-mail when the friendly woman came over with my sandwich. Wow! The sandwiches here are massive! Sure, you are paying nearly $10 for your base sandwich. However, it's worth it. I was thankful that my sandwich was cut in half. I was also supplied with a generous supply of napkins. You will need them! My sandwich was a couple of inches high. Generous portions of tender, lightly breaded veal and sliced mushrooms were in my sandwich, with deliciously fresh, soft bread holding everything together. Memories of eating veal sandwiches as a teenager came back. So good! So messy! So me! The bathroom was clean. I noticed when I got back to my table that there was a paper plate underneath the leather bench. It's the only thing that I can think of that could be improved upon. My colleagues and I decided to go out for some sandwiches at lunch time. We had tried this place in the past and were always happy. The service is quick, efficient and accurate. This time I ordered a small veal parmigiana sandwich with cheese and mushrooms. I took the small size because I had a pasta and fagiolo soup for starters. It was my first time having this soup. The soup was actually very good and surprised me. It was nice and hot, the beans were cooked just right and the pasta was firm. The sauce was Tomato based with nice oregano essence. The sandwich was, as usual, simply amazing. Starting with the soft fresh bun to the properly cooked veal and delightful tomatoes sauce with some sautéed mushrooms. Simply delish! read more

I have been going to the original location of California Sandwiches for more than 30 years. And the 2 times I tried other locations we were disappointed, but now that we moved to the burbs, it is a crazy long drive to go to the downtown location. So I took a chance and came to Maple, as it is the closest to us. I am so glad that this location is just as good, or gasp - dare I say better than downtown?!!! The abundance of parking and being able to pay by credit card makes this location more appealing right off the bat. As I always did downtown, I ordered by phone in advance, and my food was ready on arrival. When I arrived, I was encouraged by how busy the place was. People eating in the restaurant, waiting for their orders, and the kitchen was busy, just like downtown, so I was hopeful it would be close to the original. I was pleasantly surprised this location had extras the downtown location does not - like Arancini (rice balls) and pasta - which I ordered on the spot and were quite tasty! Oh! And this location actually had Rapini available, which the downtown location usually was out of every time we went. The Rapini here was really tasty and not too bitter, another plus! I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to spice, so I always order my veal sweet (no spice) and pay extra for a container of peppers on the side. At this location the peppers seem to be made into a paste, which is actually easier to apply to the delicious sandwich. I also order extra sauce on the side for dipping, and the sauce here was tastier. The veal was tender and delicious. The chicken was perfectly fried and moist. The bag did not feel as heavy as usual but I figured the downtown location was more generous... but it turned out the only downfall of this location is: I ordered hubby's sandwiches as "Deluxe", because at the original Claremont location - Deluxe means a sandwich with all the toppings (onions, sweet peppers, cheese and mushrooms) not knowing that in the other locations it means lettuce, tomato and mayo. Slow service, inefficient staff - avoid this location. They seem to prioritize mobile orders ahead of walk ins - even as the restaurant fills up with frustrated walk-in customers. Why even have so many tables upfront if you're not going to serve walk-in customers timely. Seemed staff was very inefficient to be able to handle even the slight amount of traffic. Just to be clear my order was 1 single chicken sandwich with no toppings - not even complicated with close to 5 people in the back kitchen. We ended asking for a refund, and the classy older lady at the back started yapping her attitude from the back at us "this is not McDonald's, not microwaveable food". I'd much rather microwaveable food or McDonald's at that point, in fact that's what we did. Take notes lady, that's how McDonald's is so successful and you're storefront will soon be in the lease ads. Maybe if she did her job at the back, she'd be able to output sandwiches. read more

I ordered 3 veal sandwiches from skip the dishes and called the store to ask for the sauces to be on the side and they actually make skip the dishes call me and get a credit card info to add $0.75 for the styrofoam container for the sauce. If I'm ordering food on line and not going out for lunch it's because I'm busy at work and for $0.75 you guys wasted my time. So interesting thing about me. I don't like sandwiches. Like I really don't like sandwiches. I would go to a pizza pizza before I ever stepped into a subway. So seeing as the hubby and I were in the area and he being one who adores anything on bread - and my wanting to treat him and all that - we decided to give California Sandwiches a go. He ordered the sausage deluxe and I ordered their regular sausage on a bun. OMG... I have never in my life licked the sauce off the wrapper of the sandwich before - it was that good. His sandwich had more of the regular toppings and none of the sauce. It was good - but mine (the cheaper option) was better. They also size their sandwiches based on appetite which I like. I had stopped at this location on a Friday evening. It honestly was the best California veal sandwich that I have had, for some time. The reason it was so good, was namely the bread or bun as it were. The bread was fresh and crusty. No doubt that the veal is the star of the show but I've learned that if the bun is soft and doughy it makes for a poor experience. I was so impressed that I drove there from my residence, passing at least one other California sandwich location. So much for the compliment above, back to square one with the soft doughy buns. I honestly don't get it, stop on a Friday evening, amazing, go there at 1pm on a Wednesday after a busy lunch hour and it's crap. I had ordered it before I left work and by the time I got there the food was ready. The sandwich tasted good but the only thing is the chicken wasn't the best! It seemed a little rubbery which kind of sucked. But the fries tasted amazing! Overall the staff was really friendly and the store was spotless. Ordered a large veal and two mini's, the large was ordered with sauce and mushrooms. When I got home realized the large consisted of veal with lettuce, mayo and tomatoes. Not only was my order wrong, it was the most low quality food I have ever received, the veal was hard and thin, caked in a shield of breading that fell apart and sloppily put together. Absolutely horrible experience!! I ordered 3 sandwiches and salads and when my order came there was no salads. They said they forgot to put it in the order.. So now our whole Meal is not complete.. We were sharing sandwiches and having a salad with it and now we are just sharing sandwiches so don't have enough food for everyone. So we had to order a pizza. All they wanted to do was refund my salad.. not send one out too me right away. And when I said they should refund my whole meal since it was not what we ordered and they screwed up, they said no way. They need to take some responsibility for their mistakes... not just screw up my meal and think it's ok just to give me money back for that missing item only.
