Folsom Pioneer Village is the small outdoor museum right next to Old Folsom near the old…read moreroundhouse. It is a mix of live action and historic buildings and artifacts detailing the history of the area. Hours are limited for the facility, but weekends are generally open with volunteers dressed and acting the part. Parking is generous with the large free garage next door. The facility has a live blacksmith workshop which is a fun option for viewing and purchases. There is also an old caboose which is nice for the kids to climb around in. You can easily walk around the exhibits and see the mining and pioneer artifacts. The volunteers also are there to answer questions and provide additional insight into the exhibits. Several downsides to this place. It is all outdoor so you will be exposed to the elements. The place is rather small and may be a little boring to the kids due to the lack of interactive exhibits. Hours are very limited, but admission is free. Keeping the past alive is a great thing to do, and I am glad there is a small piece of history in the middle of Old Folsom. Make sure to check the hours so you get the best experience and watch the weather. Plus there are tons of other things to do in the area!

Well fear not, intrepid medical history lovers, here it is, brought to you by the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society. They are open 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Friday, so I came by on a rare day off that I had taken because I was hosting my Swedish friend for two weeks. My Swedish friend with an advanced degree in osteo-paleontology, mind you. So, though the self-guided tour is what we chose, I did have a tour guide of a sort. And it was awesome. You can also email or call them to set up a guided or school tour, if that is preferred. The museum is much bigger than I thought based on the few photos I looked at before my visit. There is also a small office area inside with people available should you need assistance. We took an hour and a half to explore the place. There are some things that can't be unseen, so this tour might be a challenge for squeamish people. I didn't mind stuff in jars, but I'm always good on pictures of maggots going to town in a wound. There's a reason I didn't study medicine! I had never seen a lotus shoe before, either. It was so unbelievably small. My heart clenched in my chest. I hope she is happy and at peace now, wherever she is. To lighten the mood, the many uses for bedpans as decorative pieces brought us delight throughout our wanderings of the museum. It would have been fun to show my partner the exhibit on the history of overly-familiar gynecological tools, but alas he was stuck at work! Getting to see 3,000 year old statues depicting patients going through various mental and physical symptoms was a highlight of my visit. For as long as there have been humans, there have been other humans trying to make them feel better. Of course, there have also been quacks. There were several examples of quackery to look at as well. They even have library books one can read at their leisure at a table and chairs. Most books you can't touch, but some you are invited to. I especially liked reading about what medical accomplishments CSUS students have made over the years, as an alumnus myself. You can easily walk or ride the bus from campus to the museum to look at resources if you wanted, and that is really cool. So I could keep yammering about how cool it was to visit this local gem of a museum, but instead I think I'll let you check it out for yourself. They have a small lot with free parking and restrooms for the public. There's even a real iron lung! Vaccinations aren't only fun, kids, they're fundamental. Again, it is free to visit!

They…read morehave an amazing collection of posters and ephemeral of the history of rock and roll in Sacramento. Some of the early posters feature artist popular in the late 1950's. There are a lot of posters and handbills for the 1960s and later years, all the big acts and shows did come to Sacramento. I would like to see the collection again, it was a lot to see and enjoy in one visit. I saw something on their website that I wish was mine. Maybe they will have a repro of it someday. They do ask for a donation at the door.

Museum (I think "open lab" is a more apt name) is on the ground floor, wander til you locate the door. Entrance is free. Have an idea about what bugs you would like to request to see. They have a small case for live/preserved bugs that you can hold, but if you come without ideas you might find it a little underwhelming with young ones. Ideal for kids who can safely hold a bug or glass jar without dropping or shaking. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. The room is small, you may like a mask on hand. They have a gift shop area and they have bug nets you can borrow.

They also boast the second largest mosquito collection -- shhh, don't tell Bill Gates! This was my second visit, this time with kids on a field trip. The collection is vast -- so extensive that they have installed rolling bookcases to house the specimens. Our 45 minute tour led us through some of the cases and then on to live specimens which included a giant millipede, hissing cockroaches, a scorpion, black widow, tarantula, walking sticks, and a leaf bug. Our group of little bookworms with ants in their pants was enchanted! The museum is open to visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Wise people call first before they go to ensure the museum is available. While there is a small charge for tour led groups, the museum is free for general admission. But don't be a stink bug; put some money in the donation box.

In a few years past, I have managed at least one museum this one day. This year was the Aerospace Museum of California. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce our museums to the general public. The turn out at the few museums I've visited on this "free" day is tremendous. It's great to see families out spending learning and discovery time together. This is (at least) the one day each year you can expect the participating Sacramento area museums to be bustling with people - lots of young, some in the past-young-but-not-old, and older. I'd like to believe that this support exists year round. I visited the Aerospace Museum today not because it was free, but because "I" was free and had been wanting to cure my historical aero fascination and intrigue. It so happened it was a free day. Instead, I donated the normal admission fee. Museums are an important part of maintaining physical history, to see what was/is, how it was/is, and the progress (or regression); to experience the wealth of art, science, and history around the Sacramento area. It's the museums and sponsors that make this day possible and the sponsors and donations that keep museums open and available. Don't plan on a quick trip to a museum. Take time, don't rush. However, I am signed up for children games, between Gold Panning, the Old Eagle Theater, Old Town Sacra Visitor Center, and children games, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. actually supposed be 5:00 p.m. but we started cleaning up after 4:00 p.m., there for our museum 3,461 people! At Old Eagle Theater story telling every hour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., I am signed up for twelve noon! I tell story as my character, the other docent later say, "Karyn did really good telling the story in First Character!" My character 1830 to 1899, came to Goom Shan (GOLDEN MOUNTAIN) trying seek my fortune in gold! Used gold pan as prop! No luck, I opened up a laundry business!
