Peter came and gave a very reasonable quote the same day that I called. His team were able to start just a couple of days later and did a phenomenal job. They shimmied you trees and got them tidied up in no time. The biggest plus is their skill - they did some beautiful shaping to trees that were very overgrown and hadn't been well cared for in the past. It's really enhanced the garden. The arborist he works with was also very knowledgeable and friendly, answering all my questions, fertilising the fruit trees and removing any disease. Another plus was their professional, polite and friendly attitude. They talked to my neighbours and made sure to clear their property of any debris and they left my property spotless - much better than they found it. Early this year I hired California Tree Design to drop two dead trees in a canyon behind my property. We agreed the trunks would be left in the canyon and that no material was going to be taken away to keep the budget low. The problem arose when they left two large tree trunks leaning between the stump and the canyon wall. This created a large space beneath the two logs which would be very dangerous for anyone if they were to go under or climb on top of the trunks. It looked like a death trap in waiting for any child or adult. After almost six months of repeated promises to resolve the dangerous situation they still had not returned. I spoke with Peter Magana who consistently disregarded my concerns and told me it was too difficult to fix. Chris Joseph sounded much more helpful and promised he would come by and lower the trunks to the ground. Unfortunately, he too never came by. Last week I hired another tree service to do some work and I showed them the problem and asked for an estimate to make it safer. When I returned they had already trimmed the trunk to lower it flat on the ground for free. My advice is don't pay California Tree Design until the job is done to your satisfaction. All the other reviews that are on here are accurate, so I won't go on and on, but -- We have a huge huge huge redwood that he could have charged me much more to trim, but he had the most competitive quote out of the three quotes we got. He also took the time to reassure me that the tree was healthy and would not fall on my house. He could have taken advantage of my fears and offered some expensive tree regimen, but he just recommended some basic clean up and educated me about the other trees on the property as well. I reached out to 5 different companies for tree removal and CTD was the only one who arrived at the time they said and provided in-depth knowledge of the types of trees I had and explained the entire process of removal. The other companies spent less than 5 minutes with me and while most had a contractor's license, they showed no employees when looking them up on CLSB's website, as a result had no worker's comp. CTD showed employees which means they take care of their team. They were the only one who also had a certified arborist on the team. The team arrived on-time, staged what they needed to and explained what each member (about 10) would be doing throughout the process. They were very conscious of what went into the surrounding neighbors' yards and promptly cleaned up anything that fell. They also were very careful with the cable/power lines that the branches crossed. We had a tree on our property that was on a steep hillside. The soil and hillside underneath was eroding away in chunks, and though the tree was beautiful and a protected tree type, it was in danger of falling onto a public street. While I reached out to the city to get an ok for an emergency removal order, I called a few tree companies to get their input. After putting in a horrible call to an arborist who waxed poetic and lectured endlessly about how I was wrong about the safety of the tree and that in fact, the roots, would protect the tree and it was more stable than my silly little mind had imagined; I hung up on that person, who had no interest in actually listening and reached out to California Tree Design. They came out, had a look, and I explained that I was seeking an emergency order for removal. He kindly explained the steps from there and let me know removal could be almost immediate once and if the ok for the emergency removal came through. Lo and behold, I received the emergency order within a few hours and the team from California Tree Design showed up shortly thereafter. They were so efficient and fast, the entire tree and all of the litter from its removal was gone in under an hour. They were professional, fast, just all around a delight to deal with. And the hillside has since slipped even more with the last barrage of rains we had, the tree was certain to not have made it. And we've since planted two more trees on our property to replace it. They took advantage of my stressful situation to manipulate me into spending more money than needed and cutting down an entire large mature tree, when just a portion could have been removed. A portion of my tree had fallen due to high winds and was partially on my neighbor's roof. The estimator who came out seemed helpful. However, he stated he was an arborist and that the remaining portions of the large, old tree could fall in the next high winds. He stated the tree was uprooted, which I believed in my moment of stress. He also showed me photos of other fallen trees, which he said were in the area. He gave me two estimates, one for removing the portion that fell, and one higher for removing the whole tree. Out of fear induced by his subtle, skillful in a devious way manipulation, I opted for removing the whole tree. The next day, when I was thinking more clearly, I had major regrets for cutting down a beautiful, old tree. I looked more closely for signs of the uprooting the estimator spoke of. There were none. I called the owner, Peter, and expressed my disappointment and feeling of by taken advantage off. He admitted the estimator was not a licensed arborist. He then said he had photos of the uprooting of my tree and would send them, to assure me I was not manipulated. He never sent them, even though I called two more times asking for them. I would have given them 2 stars, since they did a decent job of removing the tree, however, they did not remove the stump and the owner lied about saying he would send the photos showing the uprooting. read more

We had 2 trees that need to be removed. One was a dying black walnut in the backyard that was falling apart due to the internal termite damage and fungus growth on the trunk. Another was a palm that was starting to break our driveway concrete and grow over it. Pete came for an estimate on a Monday afternoon. He was friendly and provided a reasonable quote. We scheduled the work to happen later that week on a Wednesday. Less than hour after he did the estimate, Pete called back. He asked if it would be ok to move up cutting the trees down ahead of the storm (remember that super heavy one mid-December with flash flood warnings?) that was coming on Tuesday. I said sure. His team showed up 3 hours later. Finish the first part of cutting down the tree in less than an hour and didn't make a terrible mess. The storm came and went. Wednesday, at our original scheduled time, his team came and finished the stump grind just as quickly. Really appreciated the great work and friendly service. I've had an oak tree growing in my back yard since I've moved into this house. The roots of the tree are lifting the cement work we've done for our patio and destroying my neighbors roof to his garage. I called California Tree Design and spoke with Peter. He agreed to come to my home between 9am and 9:30am for a free estimate. Well this morning I got a call a bit earlier from Peter asking if he could come earlier to check out the tree and give the estimate, I agreed Peter showed up and provide a fair estimate to remove the tree. He informed me that he had a crew that could come by immediately and remove the tree quickly. Peter's brother Gabriel came by with an 8 man crew and removed this 35ft tall tree in no time at all. Frankie came on Friday to assess a tree that had strange growths on it and determined unfortunately it was beyond saving due to mushroom growth throughout the inside. By Monday, a crew was on site to carefully remove the tree (it was right next to a fence). They ground up the roots, as well as removed an existing stump and ground up other roots from a tree that had come down years ago. Now all of those sites are suitable for new trees to be planted. They also trimmed my large camphor and sycamore trees. It was easily the best tree trimming in the 13 years I've lived here. They have a different approach than those I've used before. The canopy is still full and there are still plenty of branches with growth, but they were strategically thinned to allow space for new growth. My neighbors have already commented on how good the trees looked and asked for the company's information. I'll next be hiring California Tree Design to plant new trees in place of those that have had to come down over the years and they'll be my new tree trimming company from now on. read more
