We chose California Window & Door specifically because your company had previously completed the same window and door work on an identical model of our home, so the scope of work should not have come as a surprise to your team. The "custom tile repair" became necessary only because your installers damaged and broke tiles during the installation process. During the pre-contract consultation, we were explicitly told that no tile work or revisions would be required. Final payment was withheld because the doors were not functioning properly, and your team prevented the manufacturer from completing the warranty work that was required. There will always be issues that arise during a retrofit window and door installation. The true measure of a company's caliber and professionalism is how those issues are handled and resolved. Attempting to shift blame back onto the customer, rather than taking accountability and working toward a solution, reflects poor business practices. read more

We special ordered a front entry door from California Window & Door (CWD) that cost over $20,000.00. The installation was messy, and lacked a lot of attention to detail. See pic of the caulking work. Basically we were told by manager Anthony the caulking is as good as it's going to get. For $20,000.00. Also, it came with an unnatural crack. Very frustrating experience. We were also told all the installers were company employees. On their website - they boast "We never subcontract, every installer is an employee of California Window and Door". Mike, our salesperson also told us this. It is in fact a lie. Our installer was a guy named Joe, and when asked about working for the company, he looked me in the eye and said, "No, honestly I do projects for them periodically , but I'm NOT an employee of the company". CWD is deceptive in advertising. Joe actually works for a firm based in Hemet California, no less. He is a subcontractor. We were offered no price adjustment for the crack in the door we waited over six months for. Over $20k. Now our home has at least 7 windows we'd like to have replaced. We wouldn't want another attempt, we're pretty confident it would do more harm than good. Secondly, these are two big 3 foot by 8 foot doors. These cracks are in only one noticeable area, nowhere else. It is not just a cosmetic characteristic. It is damage, Anthony hinted at a discount, but failed to follow through. He was going to contact the door manufacturer and get back to us, but never did. We were not going to wait for another door. All Anthony wanted was all of our $20,000.00 + Lastly, you defend using your crew, glossing over the fact that you do use Sub contractors, even though California Window and Doors web page says otherwise. We had a very good experience with California Window and Door. Our project included many different windows of various sizes and a large slider. We wanted to shorten one of the windows, which required framing and stucco work. California Window and Door had a crew that handled everything for us, while the other window companies would have required us to hire contractors to do the framing and stucco work. California Window and Door also had folks that could do the city permitting for a reasonable fee, which we used. They also provided us information on federal energy rebates. California Window and Door provided us with various options at various costs. We chose to pay a little more for the Milgard windows, which come with a lifetime breakage warranty, perfect for a home on a golf course. California Window & Door delivered a sliding door system which was 9" too large for the opening due to their measurement error. Hard to imagine, but true. Their solution was to cut it down instead of reordering it. Even their installation expert (subcontractor) admitted the installation was far from correct. In addition, a sliding window unit we ordered has not opened or closed properly since day one. Yes, they have sent representatives to look at it and have told us for MONTHS that they will "get the right people here" to fix it. NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. Anthony is consistently argumentative, unresponsive and untruthful. He blames others for California Window & Door poor installation and failures. It has been a terrible experience working with them. One evening as we watched television in the living room after dinner, there was a loud bang that came from the kitchen that sounded very ominous. The external pane of the double-paned large 115" x 55" picture window overlooking the golf course had cracked into a web of shattered glass. It somehow remained intact and didn't shatter the interior pane, although the entire unit was left compromised. We first suspected an errand golf ball, a stone strewn from a landscaper's trimmer, or perhaps a bird flying into the window, but none of those possibilities seem feasible in the dark of the evening. It may have been just an aging installation succumbing to the wind. After contacting several local (and a national) window companies, we were left with diversely inconsitent quotes and a range of incompetent proposals from most that would have required stucco work and interior repair around the frame. To say that we had zero confidence in what we were being sold is an understatement. It's as if the local contractors were vying for an ineptitude award. Fortunately, there is one local company that stands well above the competition. California Window and Door is family owned, licensed and bonded, and operating with an inviting showroom to demonstrate options. Anthony and his salesperson, Mike, clearly explained their recommendations, choice of glass manufacturers with different warranties, had the most reasonable pricing, and the most efficient installation plans (not requiring remodeling) done by in-house well-trained, longtime employees. After the custom-sized window was ready, Anthony arrived at our home with installers Jaime and John and completed the replacement and the barely necessary cleanup within two hours. Based on our discussion, we asked for a quote given our dimensions. That was over a week ago and we've heard nothing. I've called and left messages and no response. While we had success with our new door purchases(2 ) and throughly enjoyed working with Matt, our last purchase was 6 new replacement windows at 9K that don't work due to a Measuring error. Unfortunately, the new windows fit but you couldn't use the release button or the crank to open the window ... so we declined the windows. Rather than California Window and Door taking the responsibility to return the windows and order something that would work... they want to have 'their shutter' guy come extend my shutters 11/2 " . So basically, I have to change the inside of my home and it's look because they didn't think to measure far enough so release and crank would work. Measured 2 times, I might add. While Tim admitted that he measured and didn't account for my shutters, I tried to find someone to buy my windows from him to help out ... but no luck. Now, unfortunately we are in litigation . Called company and Anthony (salesman) came out. I was replacing my livingroom and master sliders( 5 panels) and kitchen window. The ones I had gotten from another company were, after 7 installs, still defective. I then called California Window and Door. Anthony assured me they would put in quality glass. He ordered their most expensive doors, not telling me their were other less expensive options. My fault for not asking. These doors cost $20,000!!!! I ordered screens for both. That's when the nightmare began. Not only did he neglect to order the livingroom screen, claiming I didn't want to order it because they were too expensive and would block my view which is of the fence, he had the audacity to tell me he didn't want it to affect his commission if he had to pay for it. Mind you, I called him. All he had to do was fill out the order form. When I called to check on the order, obviously upset (not abusive) , that there was no screen, Adessa( office staff) told me that she wouldn't argue with me and hung up. I called back 3 times and met with 3 rude hang ups. Not only was she unprofessional, disrespectful, but spiteful. Instead of defusing the situation, she chose to escalate it. I don't know what world Anthony and Adessa live in but no one should ever think it is ok to treat a customer in that manner. Very professional from the time I first requested they come out and provide me with various Milgard replacement window and slider options, measuring and installation which actually took place sooner then anticipated. There was actually a problem with one of the installed sliders which opened the wrong direction. Within 15 minutes after I discovered the mistake I was assured that it would be corrected and it was to my satisfaction and within a reasonable amount of time since a new glass panel had to be manufactured. After buying $22,000 worth of windows and doors 10- 15 years ago that were directly recommended by Tim, the one on television... I called to have them fix a door knob that I can't use anymore it just won't open. The woman who answered was so arrogant that I lost my temper and asked for Tim. She said I couldn't talk to him because it would irritate him. Then she said he was on vacation. I decided to wait until he got back from vacation and called back in two weeks. After explaining everything to him he ripped into me and kept saying I was angry. I said I'm not angry but I think you should fix this door handle. But he kept saying I was angry and he was getting twisted and then said, "I don't know why you're so angry... Is it because your husband died or did he leave you?" Really mean. This is not the same guy you see on television, I'll tell you that much! I told him I was calling because I was going to give him the option of fixing my door at no cost or me leaving disappointed and going to artistic doors, that has the right hardware and was recommended to me. He started yelling and saying you're not giving me a an ultimatum are you? That's paraphrased... I said no I'm giving you the choice. Then pretty much he wouldn't let me talk and he got himself all worked up into a fury. Are you going to pay Artistic Doors? I said absolutely...I'm sure I'll pay them dearly... But you're the one who told me that these were the best hardware in the world and took me up to Big Horn to show me the big shots up there who had your doors. I thought it be worth it for $75 of your labor to fix the handle and make a client happy. I told him when his guys came out a few months ago to fix another door... That they had been really nice and not charged me for the doorhandle and in fact his technician said that they're having lots of problems with this hardware. He said it would probably happen again but that he would give it a whirl... And he did fix it very nicely and courteously. By now Tim kept challenging me and I started to get tense but kept my cool which is probably what annoyed him...Especially since I wasn't amused by his anecdote about how he bought a $500,000 Rolls-Royce and it wasn't under warranty so what should I think he'll fix my door since it was not under warranty. There was no way I could get a word in edgewise he was to spend out and wouldn't let me talk and then he said don't ever call here again... go call Artistic doors.
