I'm sure their King Cakes are great - if you actually get to eat one. I moved away from LA last year and my family and I were missing the Mardi Gras season. So I decided to order two King Cakes to be shipped to Michigan. Most of the popular bakeries had long wait lists, but Caluda had availability. They even had the option to schedule the delivery in advance to arrive on a particular day. So I ordered (2/2) and scheduled the delivery on Lundi Gras (2/17). I paid and received an email confirmation. On the Friday before (2/14) I received an automated email from saying "Your Caluda's King Cake order has shipped!" Woohoo! So far so good, but the package never made it to Fedex. I watched the tracking for the next few days but the status never changed. Still "Label Created". On Lundi Gras there was no delivery. I called Caluda's - no answer. Mardi Gras - no delivery. On Ash Wednesday I sent them an email. The following day I got a reply saying that "Fedex must have lost it" What a waste of my time and effort and dissapointed children who didn't get King Cake. To their credit they did refund my payment promptly, hence the two stars instead of one. read more

One of my Yelp friends (shoutout to Earnest) actually recommended me to check out Caluda's for their king cakes, and man was he on point with his recommendation! I got their medium sized Cream Cheese King Cake ($27.95) for my family and a slice for myself ($5.95). The texture was really soft. The flavor consisted of subtle hints of cinnamon and lemon which I really liked. The cream cheese just added more zest to the king cake flavor. I actually got there 30 minutes early before they opened at 7 am, and there was already a line; hence, this was on a normal Wednesday too! The service was nice, quick, and patient. The owner actually thanked all of us in person for waiting in line which was nice of him to do. The inside was a bit small, but it's mostly a pick up area instead of a dining place so that's understandable. This is one of the best king cakes I've ever had, and I've had a lot. I always judge king cakes by their plain one because I know if that one rocks the filled ones will undoubtedly be amazing. Caluda's plain king cake is damn near perfect. They have the perfect amount of icing in my opinion and the cinnamon runs throughout the cake so each bite is as good as the last. None of that dry, hollowed out in spots , inconsistent cinnamon thread is happening here. And listen I'm a HUGE fan of Rouses in general, but when I hear people say they have the best king cakes I'm always just wondering WTF because umm sorry but no they do not. But I digress. I purchased a Caluda's Cream Cheese King Cake from Canseco's in Gentilly! The cake itself is soft and delicious. I searched specifically for this king cake (I wanted apple or lemon with the cream cheese also). My only complaint is the small amount of cream cheese in it, it needed more! However, it was still extremely delicious and worth every penny. There is nothing I hate more than a dry King Cake, and Caluda's is very far from that. Ordered cake online... almost 30 dollars for shipping. Cake comes in damaged. I reach out via phone and email multiple times, no answer. Then I see on their website you have to file a claim through Fedex. I do that. 14 days pass and Fedex declines and say they have a special agreement with Caluda and they have to take care of the refund or replacement. I emailed Caluda and called them again no response! I gave up and said "f" it. Thennn a few weeks later my card gets charged for another cake and shipping out of no where with a delivery date of the old order!!? We purchased two king cakes - Bavarian Cream and Praline Pecan. Both were excellent with a cinnamon dough, nice amounts of filling and a light icing on top. It was sweet but not over the top. Pretty too. My only complaint is that the baby is in the middle of the king cake circle and not in the cake itself. King cake review! I waited for this particular week because I wanted to try their Banana's Fosters filled king cake. It was very good. My husband enjoyed it even more than I did! The icing has more of a caramel flavor, which threw me off a bit and lack of sliced bananas. The "cake" itself was awesome. The king cakes are very fresh, but the icing has a very odd lemony taste. The sprinkles also have a strong artificial dye flavor. I really wish they'd just use the sugar on top of all of the king cakes. Apple flan... that's all they needed to tell me and I was sold! I love apples and I love flan, so this king cake was perfect for me. First off, Caluda's main location was easy to get to. Customer service was great and they know what they're doing when it comes to king cakes. The box was sealed nicely with plastic to keep cake fresh. There is a small section on the box, where you can see part of the king cake. Just looking at it was a treat... so aesthetically pleasing. Opening it and smelling it was the best, but tasting it was the absolute bestest. Before I get into the taste, let me just tell you how beautiful of a presentation the king cake was, with sliced apples layered over the top topped with edible glitter. It looked too beautiful to eat. I couldn't resist and had to cut into it and start chowing down. The cake itself was so moist and the layer of flan was incredible + the apples took the cake. I was in heaven. This was the best $32 I ever spent on a king cake and I would do it over and over again!
