My newish laptop crashed before I understood the newfangled OneNote recovery. iTunes, photos, documents...all gone. I handed IT4 my laptop, an old external hard drive ( I had used it as a backup until it went , well, all HAL on me) and asked them what they could do. BAM! I got back nearly everything. The techs didn't make me feel like an idiot when I explained what happened. They explained to me , slowly and with limited techno-babble, what they could do and what I could expect. Turnaround time was faster than I expected, cost was reasonable and without hidden fees or any kind of up-sell, and I'm still using a problem free laptop. They even helped me choose my new external hard drive ( did you sometimes the same hard drive is CHEAPER on Amazon if you choose an unpopular color ? ). I'm leaving a review with some technical details, because I wanted more detail when I was reading reviews trying to find help. (It's really hard to know anything about a service if the negative reviews say something like, "It took two weeks and was expensive," and the positive reviews say something like, "I forgot my password and this guy was soooooooooooo helpful.") 1 My OCZ Agility 2 SSD internal hard drive started showing bad behavior. I had been using it as a Windows boot drive, and it would boot until right before the login screen, then dismount. If I ran chkdsk, it would get through 8,000 blocks or so, then dismount. I built a new boot drive and mounted the bad SSD as a data drive; any kind of disk operation resulted in 30 seconds or so of promising interaction (i.e. navigating through a folder hierarchy, or beginning to copy) followed by a dismount, with no data recovered. I "built" (assembled from ordered parts) that computer, and I'm an experienced software engineer, but I don't really know anything about Windows data recovery tools. I read some forums describing problems with the particular drive; I tried updating the drive firmware. (No change in behavior.) I read some forums on file recovery software; I downloaded Recuva and poked around, but basically got the same results as when just using Windows Explorer. The problem was not easily searchable: Either not many people have the same problem, or else it was a problem without a really specific (i.e. searchable) symptom. So what do I do? I'm a technical person, but I don't have the specific tools or experience. William had the tools and experience. I think in this case there wasn't any silver bullet which solved the problem -- he just had the patience to try a bunch of things, and the experience and tools to know what to try. In less than 24 hours, on a weekend, he had recovered the folder I cared about. (I had a weekly backup for the rest.) He charged (quite a bit) less than $100 in this case. Could I have gotten it done if I downloaded more tools and tried more things? Maybe. But I'm really happy I didn't spend any more time trying. One more note: I had called a reputable data recovery specialist company in the area, and when the customer rep wouldn't answer my questions, he referred me to the owner. The owner gave some GREAT info about what they were able to do for SSDs: maybe replace the drive controller; maybe pull individual chips from the board to recover partial data. My instinct was that this was overkill. I could have been wrong, but I'm really glad I went with my instinct.

I called Orromac: $250 and they could get it back to me in 24 hours. So I dropped it off at 5:45pm yesterday. Osama called me at noon to tell me it was ready. It started up like a charm. So MUCH faster turnaround at $50 less. I am surprised other reviewers found this proprietor to be unfriendly. He could not have been nicer. Oh, and the screen hasn't been this clean since the day I bought it.
