One visit plus meds for my cat's UTI and bladder stones: $952.89. Care is okay, but not worth the price of a laptop.

Not for vet reactive pets…read more Prior to this month, I was satisfied overall with Porter Square Vet despite some mild issues, primarily around communication. I don't generally publish complaints but due to the vets unwillingness to discuss their errors, I feel obligated to warn any pet owners with vet-reactive dogs. When I moved to Somerville and brought my dog to Porter Square Vet, I was transparent that my dog is vet reactive. I mentioned that he doesn't like the vet in general but that he doesn't tolerate exams. I also mentioned that I had previously used a fear free vet who was willing to do sedation for annual exams / as needed to ensure adequate care. I was told we could consider that if it proved to be necessary. At my dog's first exam with them, I was given recommendations for dental hygiene products, which i purchase and utilized. At his last exam, I specifically asked about dental cleanings, as I had noticed a good amount of plaque build up on my dogs teeth when I was brushing them. The vet looked at my dogs mouth briefly and I was told it was necessary at that time. I brought my dog in this month due to non-specific behavior changes as well as some dietary issues and worsening bad breath. The vet offered a dental cleaning/check, which I agreed to. The procedure overall went fine, but I was told my dog had significant periodontal disease and that they had removed 14 teeth which was confusing considering I was told a dental clean was not warranted just 5 months prior. Upon voicing my frustration, I was told "the vet was unable to exam his teeth due to being muzzled for the exam." My dog requires additional vet care for which I sought a different practice since Porter Square Vet was unable to develop or follow an appropriate care plan and Porter Square Vet has now opted to ignore me.

They often contradict themselves. For example, they said that stressful situations could kill a cat with a heart condition and so we should never put him in any stressful situations. Then, they said we should take him to a cardiologist (outside their office) twice a year for monitoring. Those are by far the most stressful experiences he's ever been in. Later, they prescribed him a medication in the form of pills that we were to split in half. We were to give him half at each meal. After we ran out of the initial prescription, we wanted them to be delivered. They push people to order medication through Covetrus, rather than Chewy or anything else because they make more money that way (https://covetrus.com/covetrus-platform/prescription-management/online-pharmacy/). So, we tried that. They would not approve the original prescription, and instead asked to buy tablets. They were adamant about that, but those actually were not available on Covetrus. Instead, they said we should get these compounded pills instead of splitting the original-sized pills. The compounded pills are eight times more expensive. We already pay a lot for three other cat medications and could use a break. When I asked to talk to the vet tech about this, the admin said they wouldn't talk to me. In short, something is wrong there. They often don't agree with themselves, and they're not really there to work with you to care for your pet; they're there to get you out of the way.

They provide a free brief exam and medical advice. No emergency care is provided. If you have been seen there before for vaccinations, keep the documents they give you. You will need them for your next visit. They keep a record of your pet's visits, which consists of an index card with pet information and services provided. There is a limit of twenty-five pets seen per day. If you get there after 8:00 AM, there are already twenty-five people there, and you will not be seen. There is always a line and it starts at the side stairs, not at the front door of the building. I made the mistake of using the front door entrance and was sent to the back of the line, which was on the side of the building that I did not know existed. Cats have to be in carriers and dogs have to be on leashes. They ask for a donation.

Although I told her I was fine, she made sure I had a comfortable place to sit and be with my dog, and got me blankets and a pillow that she told me to keep with me). The doctors were always extremely honest and transparent about outcome possibilities. They diagnosed my dog very quickly, and never outwardly broke a sweat or seemed nervous while stabilizing him. I was most impressed by the "transport service" that they provided to the ICU at the nearby major animal hospital which had more diagnostic equipment and had specialized surgeons should he end up needing that care - they arranged everything, were in communication with that hospital to make sure the medical handoff went smoothly, and then transported my dog in a van with vet techs to ensure he would remain stable. The vet techs who helped with transport insisted I keep the pillow and blankets which came in handy as I spent the night in the ICU, and were all incredibly sympathetic. Unfortunately my pup didn't make it but it was through absolutely no fault of VEG, and it is to their credit that he held on long enough to get to the ICU where we were able to discover exactly what was wrong with him and then help him pass a little more easily than he would have otherwise. My heartfelt thanks to whoever worked on Julius at the time (June 5), and especially his main vet tech. I wish I could remember her name, but she was such a comforting presence to have by my side on a night where I was given some awful news about my furry family member.

I truly believe we were meant to find Dr. Schoenberg. She came exactly when she said she would. She was calm and caring and able to support us during this very difficult time. She explained things clearly, she handled things beautifully, and was so, so compassionate. I think the thing I noticed most was how she would pick up on the little things - the paw-print art we had on a shelf, that Max had done. The spot on his head that we kissed as we said goodbye. The things we loved about him, the things we said about him - she called attention to those things, and made it clear that this was about Max, and us, and how much we loved him. I recommend Dr. Schoenberg with my whole heart - you will have the best possible care.
