As a discerning pet owner, Dr. Weiner and his staff have always been exceptionally kind to me and my dogs. As well, their prices (while expensive) are certainly within the normal range for the quality of care that is given. One of the things that I appreciate most about CVC is that when I call with a sick dog (an emergency or emergency lite) they will bend over backwards to make sure that I get in to see them that day. I can't say the same thing for other vets in the area, and I can tell you--having a regular vet that you known and trust that can't see an "extremely" sick dog is a disheartening experience. Thank goodness for the commitment of Dr. Weiner and his staff, it is exceptional. Dr. Weiner is thorough, and he always explains in great detail what he is doing. I brought my "large" 6 year old dog to the vet clinic because I could walk him there. I was worried about cancer. I have been treated with nothing but kindness and patience, and my dog loves it there also. He did not have cancer! They are wonderful. I was referred to Cambridge Veterinary Care while searching for someone in walking distance from my house (in Somerville) who could treat a rat. My 3mo rat came to me with excess sneezing, so I used the tip-to-tail check up offer from CVC and got her checked out. The doctor and assistant were so caring and lovely with Ripley, and I think she felt safe. I walked out with a week's worth of cold medicine for her, and the vet has checked in twice via email. They also over-charged me accidentally and put a check in the mail for a partial refund, which I very much appreciated. Overall, a great experience. read more

WOW!!!!! I guess I was 100% correct about Dr.Weiner!!! Not only did this rude, unprofessional so called vet over charge me on every appointment we had with him but come to find out after him charging us $600.00 for blood work on our dog it was never performed!!!!! The woman named Kim that works there she's another rude employee!!!!! How dare these people tell me they need to sedate our dog when we bring her in!! I told my new vet what they told me and they were stunned to hear that. There words were "obviously they have no experience in how to handle pets, because you certainly do not tell the owner there pet needs to be sedated!! These people are crooks they tell you your pet needs medication and you need to purchase it from them because if you purchase it from "Chewy" it's not guaranteed!!!! After having some time to think about it... I would say that if your cat truly needs dental work, then this is the place to do it. Meanwhile, it would be good to get a second opinion before having the work done as it might not all be necessary. I have since switched to a different vet after moving and they are less aggressive about dental work. But if your pet needs dental work, this place will do a good job. But get a second opinion. These guys did my cats teeth a few weeks ago... the very cat in my profile :) They have a lot of compassion for the animals, and I really feel that and appreciate that. I think my cat got the best care possible which was great since she is a super shy cat that barely comes out from under the bed! Was very glad for the extra care. I will agree that it is not the cheapest place your could go; however, there are real trade offs to going less expensive. I found them to be super up front about any expenses that would be incurred and willing to take any procedures I deemed unnecessary. At the end of the day, they even gave me a slight discount to make it more affordable and I was really appreciative and grateful for that. So I think this place is offers excellent care. I think the staff is extremely professional and caring. Best part is that, unlike other hospitals, you are generally going to be dealing with the same vet people every time since it is a smaller shop. So they are likely to remember your cat and the issues your cat has faced over time. I recommend this vet. If you are getting a large surgery, you might want to ask for an estimate in advance just so you are not surprised by expenses. I think they will be more then willing to accomodate you. I, as other reviewers have been, am surprised at the negative reviews I've seen on this site. I take my darling little cat Marlowe to Cambridge Vet and have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Weiner and the team. I brought Marlowe in for a standard check-up last November, not worried about any health issues. Dr. Weiner and the vet tech found a lump in his throat. Dr. Weiner immediately took a biopsy, blood test, etc. - explaining the purpose of each test as he went along, I might add - and sent me an incredibly detailed email as soon as the lab results came back. It turned out that Marlowe had an incredibly rare form of cancer - they immediately booked surgery, and Marlowe came out of it not only tumor-free (knock wood), but purring. When we went in for a 6-month check-up today, Marlowe received a careful examination and loving treatment from Dr. Weiner and the lovely vet tech whose name I unfortunately don't know. I have always gotten the strong sense that those at Cambridge Vet really do love their animals, and Marlowe has been the happy recipient of the careful treatment he deserves. Marlowe is also on prescription food that I have to pick up from the office. They have NEVER been out of supply, even when, admittedly, I've waited until the last minute to pick up a new case. Not only that, they've been sweet enough to give him a couple of free little catnip toys that he loves more than ANY other toy he has. CVC has also been really helpful with expenses. I just finished grad school and have not had regular income. They worked with me around billing for expenses and recommended a payment service that has significantly decreased the financial strain on me. So, big fan of Cambridge Veterinary. This was possibly the worst customer service experience I have had. Dr Weiner is probably the rudest individual I have ever come across. His lack of people skills is absolutely appalling. Not only do I deserve to be treated with respect and common decency but someone in his position should go be willing to go the extra mile to ensure that his customers are satisfied with the service. To be told I can go some place else if I don't like how rude he is just confirms that he is only in business to make money. I feel sorry for any of his employees that have to endure such rudeness. Please subject yourself to this type of behavior. Take your pet somewhere that not only they would be treated well but you as the pet owner will be treated with respect and kindness. Dr. Weiner has been treating our french bulldog Louie for many years; most of the years of his life and he is almost 14. Dr. Weiner and his staff have done multiple treatments and surgeries for us in urgent and unexpected times of need. We are sure he has saved Louie's life at least 4 times and has made him more comfortable with his physical ailments/conditions. Dr Weiner AND his entire staff have always shown compassion, flexibility, and sincere care - to us, our family, and of course our dog. He really cares for animals and their best interest. Even if it means telling you something you don't want to hear about what needs to be done for your animal. We all have those moments as pet owners. We have always had great follow up and after-care treatment - with check in emails, calls, pills/easy refills, prescription foods if needed, and printed sheets with loads of information on what to expect after surgery. The facility is also very CLEAN which is important to us. RE: Money / Pricing: As with any service that costs money, we ask about pricing before we agree to things. As anyone should! We always feel that Dr. Weiner is very up front with us and willing to discuss options and costs before moving on. Pets can be expensive, but that is what you sign up for as a pet owner!! If you can't afford good care for your pet, don't have a pet. In sum, Cambridge Vet is reliable, organized, professional, and we very much recommend them. read more

I chose this place because they accept my payment plan (Pet Assure). Although it's a bit of a drive from Brookline, it is definitely worth it. I have two "difficult" cats and they took such good care of them during their vaccinations I decided to board my three cats for a three-day trip. Their boarding facilities are beautiful and spacious (not "cat jail.") When I picked them up, it was apparent that Dr. Weiner had seen the cat that needed medical boarding every day. They had clearly taken the cats out for playtime twice a day. In addition, my longhair kitten came out very well-groomed. Their prices were also very reasonable. I can tell that Dr. Weiner and his staff are all true animal lovers and I greatly appreciate everything they've done for us! read more

Cambridge Veterinary Care is a cute little office with friendly staff.. until you actually meet the vet. He is very rude, made me feel bad for adopting a small cat while living in an apartment, and didn't answer any of my questions. I imagined our first visit to be kind of adorable.. introducing my kitten to the vet, learning what to expect with a kitten, and so on. Unfortunately my experience was the exact opposite. He was extremely cold and wouldn't make eye contact with me. He gave her a checkup, clipped her nails, and prescribed an antibiotic to heal a small patch of stitches she had. The bill ended up being over $800 with NO WARNING. I got to the front desk and paid it without saying anything because I was kind of naive. Cambridge Veterinary Care is overpriced and an overall uncomfortable experience, do NOT go to this vet. read more

I'm suspicious of Cambridge Veterinary Care, to say the least. I brought my 9 year old cat there about 3 months ago, because i was worried she was suffering from asthma. The doctor I initially saw - Dr.Tubman - seemed a tad socially awkward, but efficient & handled my cat well. I had done some research about feline asthma prior to bringing her in, and everything he said seemed to fit in with what I had read. He ran some blood tests & then prescribed steroids, which is par for the course when asthma is suspected and sent us on our way, recommending that we come in for a follow up appointment to talk about getting an inhaler. Here's where it gets weird. We were scheduled to come in yesterday for a follow up, but when I went up to the front desk asking for Dr. Tubman, I was told he wasn't in on Saturdays & that I would be seeing Dr. Weiner. Immediately, the vibe I got from him was weird. He seemed very detached from the situation. I came in there to get an inhaler and some prescriptions for my cat, and instead was told that she needed blood tests for FIV, feline AIDS, leukemia, and that she was possibly suffering from a bacteria called Bordetella. Then I was told her teeth were rotting out of her head and that she needed all of them extracted. He reassured us that cats don't need their teeth and that they remove ALL of the teeth from cats mouths all of the time. He then handed me some pamphlets about feline dental issues. I find it mighty strange that out of the 20 or so reviews on here, half of them mention Dr. Weiner recommending total tooth extraction. Either Dr. Weiner just really enjoys removing teeth, or he knows that it's an expensive procedure and that he can prey on the fears of pet owners. I finally got my inhaler & prescriptions and got the fuck out of there before he could list me off 200 other things that were wrong with my sweet little furbaby. Obviously I wasn't going to okay all of those blood tests (not all of us have hundreds of dollars just sitting in our bank accounts...) or agree to any kind of surgery without getting a second, or maybe even a third, opinion. I adopted a healthy kitten from the Animal Rescue League about a year and a half ago and CVC was the first vet we brought her to. I never particularly liked Dr. Weiner, but after reading the reviews on here I am compelled to post as well. About six months ago, I noticed my cat had broken a large part of a canine tooth, so I brought her in to get it checked out. Not only did Dr. Weiner recommend having the one tooth removed, he told me that my 1.5 year-old cat had feline resportive lesions and was in loads of pain all the time and would need to go under anesthesia to have several teeth removed. Just as other reviewers have mentioned, he told us how his cats have had all their teeth removed and they don't even need them. The procedure would start at $800 and go up to as much as $1600, but he wouldn't know how many teeth needed to be removed until he was able to put her under and look at the other teeth. As a first time pet owner, I was naturally upset and ready to consent to anything the vet recommended. From his manner you would have thought he had just told me she had cancer. Complete lack of people- and animal-bedside manner. No affect whatsoever as he showed me pictures of cats with this condition and I started crying in the vet's office thinking of how serious this was. Naturally, he happened to have an opening for surgery the very next morning, just enough time to NOT think twice or change your mind ... Not only was it not as serious as he led me to believe, I would later find it was completely unnecessary and she had no dental problems. Thank GOD my roommate convinced me to get a second opinion. I took her to a great vet who did not share Dr. Weiner's concerns whatsoever, and charged me $300 to remove ONE broken tooth. I have taken her to another (closer) vet recently, who also assured me her teeth are very healthy. The number of reviews mentioning that Dr. Weiner urges pet owners to have several or ALL teeth removed is completely astounding. After reading all of the reviews (and unfiltered ones - please don't miss these), I am completely appalled that a vet would recommend such unnecessary surgery in order to gouge unsuspecting pet owners. I suspect that this happens more than is even mentioned in the reviews, because I would not have posted had I not been curious enough to look him up tonight. It angers me that someone like this is still in practice and I would urge anyone who has had a similar experience to file a complaint. This seems like a very strange, bad racket to me and deserves an investigation. read more

Yeah...I am switching vets. Dr. Weiner or whatever his name is not nice. I've gone here for a while, and love the staff, but the vet is another story. The opposite of my last vet experience at Village Vet in Brookline, was in love with the vet there, but the staff were jerks. My dog had a little rash on her belly, I assumed maybe allergies or something. Get some creme from him and call it a day. $600 later and we get home and my poor dog won't stop throwing up, and she never throws up! We couldn't enjoy the day, she was sick the next day as well. He told me that she needed a $600 tooth cleaning, which, I get that your pets need their teeth cleaned if you don't do a good enough job with the brush, but then he told us that his cat has no teeth. Um, practice what you preach? A friend of mine's dog had a ruptured spleen recently and got blood transfusions from a doggie blood doner. I asked if I could get my pup put on the list. He looked at me like I was an idiot, asked what I was talking about and then laughed at me. He's never heard of this. you've never heard of a dog donating blood for surgeries? Anyway, I am switching vets and I wouldn't recommend these guys to *anyone*. read more

I come from a family of docs and have visited several vets for my pets over the years, never seen a more snotty vet. I usually take my 2 persians to Dr. Jane O'Donnel at Winter Hill and she is great. But, Weiner is very close to my house and I thought I would try him for my kitties regular senior check-ups. I was appalled. First of all, I felt that he had a horrible bedside manner with my pets and he had no interpersonal skills with me whatsoever. He never said ONE WORD to my cats while he was manipulating them around like they were inanimate objects. He gave me a long list of labs he said they needed and named the price immediately. He then said my little female cat who scratches herself and who has been worked up extensively for this already should be on narcotics! She is a happy little thing and has no evidence she is in pain. I was shocked and said to him, "are you kidding me! You are not giving my cat narcotics!". He then told me my big cat needed dental work and cleaning and this would be hundreds of dollars for the cleaning and hundreds more for the extraction, I complained about the price. I told him I frequently had their teeth cleaned and never paid that. He said, "we do it right here", implying that I go to a place that probably does not. This is absurd. I checked out the procedure where I get their teeth cleaned and they do have general anesthia and IV fluids just like Weiner says he does and I pay a fraction of the price he would have charged. I initially scheduled the surgery but then recalled how incredibly uncomfortable I felt with this man and this office and cancelled it. My fee for 2 cats having a regular check-up and standard labs was over $600.00. I have gotten this same service at my regular vet for a fraction of this price. I would not advise anyone to go to this vet. In my opinion, he seemed cold and indifferent towards my cats, and I have heard this numerous times from other clients about the way he ineracted with their pets. I found the prices to be inflated and in my opinion he tries to push pricey services onto you that your animanal may or may not need. He is, in my opinion, out for the money. I gave the office all of this feedback. I never heard anything from them about my dissatisfaction. read more

I used to go here to buy bags of dog food. I finally couldn't stand the attitude of the owner/clerk and decided to buy my dog food at Petco online. Much cheaper and easier on my nerves. I'd never take my dog here for vet care, pet sitting, or grooming. Not upscale enough for me and something about the place puts my nerves on edge. I once asked for a bag for my 5 lb bag of dog food. No bags. Who ever heard of a store that didn't have bags? No bags? Or was it, no bags for me? Something weird about the prices too. As I recall, their 5 lb bag of dog food cost as much as the 20 lb I bought at PetCo. How could that be? This seems to be another vet establishment that's involved with 'training". During my last and final (!) visit to this store, there were about 5-8 women all gathered behind the counter receiving some sort of lecture from the owner's wife. Before you take your pets here, let me relate 3 experiences I had that I think are telling. 1) I had been told for a few years and by multiple vets (I have moved around a lot) that my 2 cats needed their teeth cleaned. Last spring I finally caved and set up appointments for their teeth cleaning, a couple days apart from each other. While my first cat was having his teeth cleaned, I received a call from the vet telling me that my cat was currently under anesthesia and the vet had determined that one of his teeth was so bad it needed to be removed. I was quite surprised, and since the cat was under as we were speaking, I didn't really have any time to think or do research so I just trusted the vet and hold him to go ahead. 2 days later, my other cat had her teeth cleaned, and I got another call during the procedure. This time, I was told her top 2 canine teeth were bad and needed to come out. I resisted a bit because that seemed so drastic, but I was told she would be in pain if I didn't do it, so I agreed. Just a few days ago I took this 2nd cat to a different vet (I moved again) for her annual check up, and he was shocked that her top canine teeth had been removed. He said she had healed up just fine, and she seemed to be eating fine, but he couldn't believe that any vet would find it necessary to remove those. Whenever I see my cat yawn now, I feel like I need to avert my eyes - it just makes me feel ill to see her mouth and where those missing teeth should be. I can't believe I put her through that extraction when she probably didn't even need it - not to mention spent about a thousand dollars doing so. Who knows if my 1st cat needed that molar removed or not. 2) One of my cats was experiencing constipation. I took him in, and he was given an enema. A few days later he still hadn't had any bowel movements, so I took him in again, and he was given a 2nd enema. When I got home from the 2nd appointment and let him out of his carrier, his white back paw was bloody around the claws and pads. I was horrified, so I called the office to ask what happened, but it was a Saturday afternoon. The office had already closed, and I could only get through to the answering service, who told me they had no way of contacting anyone in the office, and I could just leave a message and someone would get back to me on Monday regarding what had happened to my cat's foot. I did leave a message, and the vet actually called me back that afternoon because he said he had happened to stop back by the office and saw my message. However, he was surprised to hear about the bloody foot and didn't have any idea what had caused it. This really bothered me because A) I feel like he wasn't very attentive to what was happening to my cat during the procedure and B) what I am left to assume happened is that my cat was restrained with such force and violence that he probably caught his claw on something and his foot got pulled so hard it bled. 3) I had to fly cross-country with one of my cats, so I wanted to give her a pill that would sedate her. I found the medication that I wanted on petmeds.com, and the pills cost about 20 cents a piece. However, you needed a prescription to order the pills, so I just called the vet office instead and asked for one. When I arrived to pick up the medication, I was told my total was somewhere around $30 for 3 pills! The same ones that cost mere change on petmeds! I told the woman behind the counter that that seemed like quite a mark-up, and I was informed that the veterinary office 'has overhead'. I told her that the cat was only making 1 flight and that I only wanted 1 pill, but I was told that I really needed 3 in case I dropped one or something. I managed to talk her down to only making me buy 2 of the pills. So, I urge you to consider these experiences of mine before you make your vet choice. I never felt very good about my experiences there, but my recent guilt over my cat's questionable teeth extraction prompted me to be upset enough to want to share these things. read more

This vet is horrible. I went there two separate times with my cat and my dog. The doctor was rude and condescending to me. When I brought my cat in he did several unnecessary tests. My cat had a minor infection that cleared up in a couple of days with antibiotics. My total was well over $400 dollars. On my next visit my dog had a small flea allergy. I asked him if we could try antibiotics first and come back for testing if it didn't clear up. He screamed at me and claimed that it would be unethical for him to not do another $400 in tests. My total bill was $480. An animal control officer came to my home a couple of days ago to investigate an abuse complaint. I will never go back there and am seriously considering reporting him to the licensing board. Stay away from this place!!! read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! Dr- super rude condescending and talks down to people. My gf is a post doc at MIT and I have two masters degrees. He spoke to us like we were children. He talked at us and told us over 1,000 $ worth of procedures were needed in order to get our rabbit fixed. He asked questions and didn't wait for answers. When we left the room we were so stunned that it was 1) as expensive as it was 2) the whole place (except the nurse who helped hold the rabbit and her trainee) acted annoyed that they had to do their job. secretary- Rude and unprofessional both in person and on the phone. Wow, I am so surprised to see the mixed reviews on Cambridge Vet Care! For potential patients of this facility, I can only provide my personel experiences. Perhaps the vet has worked to improve things since these reviews were written, because for us, the vet has been ace. We got a new dog from a rescue based out of Ohio. Because the rescue was hoping to take in new dogs faster (to save them from being put down), the rescue decided to move up the transport with our dog. That would have been fine, except that he was neutered the day before he was transported in a *van* from Ohio to New Hampshire, and was very very swollen. When we got him, he seemed ok, but he was probably on major painkillers because the next day (a Saturday), he was in so much pain that he couldn't sit or lie down. He was crying and yelping.. it was terrible. My husband and I called at least 5 vets that day, all of which were too booked to see a new patient on an emergency basis. When I started crying on the phone with Winter Hill, the lady on the phone recommended we try Cambridge Vet. They fit us in within the hour (I am guessing Dr Weiner's lunch), and were waiting for us when we arrived. That initial appointment was expensive, I will admit. We got a lot of drugs for the dog (who had ear infections, an infection at his surgery site, and was in so much pain he needed painkillers), and we needed to have basic tests like heartworm run, and those are pricey. But since then, we have had repeated checkups without paying more than $20 or $30. More importantly, every time we go in there, we know that our little dog is going to be taken care of. Both Dr Weiner and Dr Tubman have now had more than one examination of our dog, and he likes them both despite what he has been through. The receptionists are perhaps the most lovely people I have ever met, and they didn't even judge me when I went in there one day crying, unbathed, and obviously at the end of my rope after our dog tore out his stitches in the middle of the night. This review is a long one, but the bottom line is simple: I would recommend this place to anyone who loves their pet. I feel confident in the staff, and even when I do have to spend a little money, I think it is well worth it for the piece of mind. Our puppy is getting better every day, and I attribute that completely to the care from Cambridge Vet. read more

**UPDATE** I'm updating this review on my spouse's account because she's too upset to do it. After swearing that we would find another vet and wouldn't go back to CVC again, our dog started having a breathing problem that we thought might be related to the prescription medication they had given us at our last visit. Thinking it was related to her prior treatment there, we thought we should contact them about it first before going to a new vet and having to explain everything. We gave CVC a call and the receptionist urged us to bring her in immediately. We were still a bit reluctant, but our pet's symptoms seemed to be getting worse and we just wanted to have her taken care of as soon as possible. We walk into the clinic and the receptionist says, "Okay, are you SURE you want Dr. Weiner to see your pet?" She brings us into the exam room and asks to speak to my spouse "alone." I said no, that I was the co-owner of our dog, and I needed to be there too. She insisted that she "just needed to talk" and again asked me to leave the room. It was off-putting, but I wanted to see what this was all about, and I wanted my dog to be seen ASAP, so I agreed to step outside, but could still hear. It turns out that she wanted to speak with my spouse "alone" to confront her about writing this negative review on Yelp. She asked why we didn't call them to talk to them about our problems first, and expressed that she was offended and worried that others would see the review and think badly of them, and that it would encourage other people to post mean things about their business. My spouse responded by acknowledging that it was an emotionally-driven post because we obviously care about our dog, and that she didn't mean for it to be offensive. She even apologized for it, which I wouldn't have done. This went on for about 10 minutes, all the while ignoring the fact that I brought my dog in for something urgent! It ended with her asking us again if we were "sure" we wanted the Dr. to see our pet, at which point I made the decision to leave and find another vet. My problem isn't that they confronted us about the review. I actually respect that they had the audacity to bring it up. My problem is that, it wasn't in an effort to resolve anything - it was solely to make us feel "guilty" for posting what was a factual account of our bad experience! Had they offered an apology/explanation, I would have come back with a POSITIVE update, but the way they handled the situation was unprofessional and unwelcoming. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I recently moved to Cambridge and was hesitant to try to find a new vet, especially since my dog's primary physician has been with her since I rescued her 4 years ago. I have a small chihuahua and took her into Cambridge Veterinary Care today for an upset stomach and some vomiting and diarrhea. The receptionist was very nice and made my dog and I feel welcome, but as soon as I took her into the exam room my experience changed. First of all, the vet tech working with us was in training. I understand that everyone needs to have training to be better but, maybe working on a 5 lb scared and sick dog isn't the best idea. The doctor (Weiner) spent time showing her how to enter all of our information, etc, never once letting me know that she was in training, or even acknowledging that I was in the room. I was left to assume such. He instantaneously looked at my dog's teeth, disregarding why we were even there in the first place (because she was sick). He then went on to tell me that they specialize in dentistry and that my dog's teeth are awful, and that she is in constant pain because of them. He looked her over and brought back a list of things he wanted to do that totaled over 500.00, (Including blood work, which I just had done less than two months ago before moving here) and a specialized pancreatic test. I passed on everything except for fluids, nausea and diarrhea meds, and a take home stomach medicine--it still ended up being 250.00 After all of this, the vet tech tries to hold my dog so that he can put a fluid IV into her, and it falls out twice. He then asks for another vet tech to come and take over, because 'she's more experienced.' Once that was over with he went back to her teeth. Granted, she's an older dog and a rescue, but I had her teeth cleaned less than a year ago. He was eager to tell me that it's "normal" for them to pull out all of dog's teeth, and that it would cost between 500-3500 dollars. (Keep in mind, I never even asked him to look at her teeth... I brought her in for being sick) He then tried to tell me about their credit line to pay for it all, which was the cherry on top of everything! Overall I was not impressed and will not be bringing her back there. Expensive, and unnecessary in my mind. The vet tech and dr were not loving, and as an overly cautious pet owner whose dog is like her child, I expected way better service for those prices. read more

As a former ER vet tech, I have to say that this place is AWESOME! Dr. Weiner is an incredible veterinarian, who knows his stuff and works with the most up to date technology/best practices. With that being said, when going to any veterinarian, please remember you get what you pay for. Owning a pet is not cheap, so for some of the reviews complaining about costs, if you want good healthcare, it does not come cheap. I think that the prices are incredibly reasonable considering what you might find when you go to the MSPCA or other veterinarians in the Boston area, and those vets aren't near as competent and understanding as Dr. Weiner and his team. My fur babies will always see Dr. Weiner and I can rest easy at night knowing that they have one of the best vets in the area for their care. Thanks, Cambridge Veterinary Care team! *Edit- I'm knocking this review down to two stars after they recommended a Corona vaccination for my 9 year old dog. This is only useful for puppies and the AAHA doesn't even recommend it for any age. Shame on you. Original review: I'll start off by saying that I've never been completely happy with any vet I've been to. I wish that weren't the case. What I've come to notice over the years is that vets who are well-trained and know what they're doing typical have higher prices and those who are not quite up on all the latest medications/treatments/etc. tend to be a bit cheaper. For better or worse, Dr. Weiner falls into the first category. Yep, the prices are a bit high, but not outrageous if you look around. My newly "senior" dog had a full workup done on my last visit that I wasn't sure was necessary, but it caught something unexpected. I sure don't feel it was unnecessary now. At some point, all vets tend to lay on the preventative medicine/extra tests guilt trip. I agree that the heartworm infested heart is way overboard though. Thankfully I've never witnessed it. But if I had an owner who was adamant about not using a heartguard, then I'd pull it out too. Pet owners should be required to buy a 10 year supply of the stuff when they adopt. There is no doctor in the world who can diagnose what the problem is 100% accurately every time. I've known plenty of folks who needed 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc extra doctor visits to change medications or diagnoses on human bodies. Animals are even more complicated because they can't describe the trouble. Do they get kick-backs from Science Diet / Frontline / et al? I have no idea, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised. If they were pushing "Chin's toxic Chinese Dog Chow" (no offense to anyone!) then you can be concerned. I've never felt like anything was pushed on me other than the feeling that they want to be extra-preventative about everything. Just think how upset you would be if they told you that Frontline is optional for a city dog and then your dog contracts Lyme's disease? Pets have expensive medical bills. There's no way around it. And vets don't want to be responsible if something goes wrong when they could have prescribed a preventative. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Just be thankful you don't have equestrian medical bills! read more

I usually don't write reviews, but was scared enough by my last visit to comment. I have 2 young, healthy cats that I adopted from the animal rescue league- boston branch. I originally picked CVC for proximity to my house. The first time I went I was charged over $500 for 2 wellness exams and booster shots. Being a first time pet owner I figured this was reasonable and went on my way. A few months later I noticed of my cats was limping, so I went to CVC to see Dr. Tubman who was friendly and thorough and recommended an xray. I brought my cat in the next morning fasted since the xray was done under anesthesia. I was coldly greeted by Dr. Weiner who acted like I was wasting his time and rolled his eyes when I asked to hug my cat goodbye. I picked him up later and his xray showed a minor luxating patella...nothing too bad and something he would grow out of...whew. However, it was then that Dr. Weiner launched into his speech about my cat's "dental disease" and how he would need dental xrays and extractions...I brushed it off and went on my way. Not even 2 months later, my other cat threw up 9 times in 45 minutes, so I rushed her to CVC. After some kitty tummy meds and blood work, Dr. Weiner immediately started to chastise us on the "poor" state of her teeth. He said the blood work that was done would be good for up to 90 days if we wanted to have her teeth extracted. We got the usual speech that it seems like a lot of clients get "cats don't need their teeth, I remove all of my cats teeth after awhile." I got suspicious after that and switched my cats to the vet's office attached to the Animal Rescue League's adoption center. We saw Dr. Davis who was very thorough, professional, and guess what...gave our cat's a clean bill of dental health. Plus the cost was a quarter the price and all proceeds go to the ARL. In short, I don't know what Dr. Weiner's odd obsession is with removing cat teeth, but its very unsettling, the inflated prices don't help either....Avoid at all costs. read more

Brought my puppy in for her initial wellness visit. The doctor was very kind and I trusted his input, but that's all I have to say that's positive. I had to go in the following day because my dogs fecal sample came back positive for a minor parasite. When I went in to pick up the medication, I was treated extremely rudely by both people working on the weekend. I explained that my dog was set with trupanion insurance and the vet center was listed as a direct pay facility, meaning that I wouldn't have to pay out of pocket and trupanion would send them a check for everything covered. First, the younger male vet tech told me she wasn't covered until 30 days after I started trupanion, which was false because trupanion specifically told me she was covered as soon as I signed up with a plan. He explained, "well you still have to pay" in a rude tone. I explained that I wasn't completely sure so I wanted to go in and have them speak to trupanion directly. He ended up leaving immediately without saying a word and then I was now working with an older woman who ended up being the main reason for my negative review. She was 100% rude to me the whole time I was in the lobby. She called trupanion and said, "I have a young lady in here who is telling us that she can take the medication without paying for a thing". (Which isn't true, I just wanted to know if anything would be covered). Trupanion ended up saying that yes, the med would be covered because my dog doesn't have preexisting conditions. Then they said that because they are direct pay, they can either send a check to cambridge vet or send me a check if I pay now. I heard all of this since the trupanion call was loud enough for me to hear. As soon as the woman got off the call, she had the audacity to lie to me and say that I must file the claim myself and leave it to trupanion. I confronted the lady in her lie and explained that I felt she was rude to me the whole visit when in fact trupanion would cover and pay. Then she apologized and tried to pet my dog! Additionally, no one gave me any instruction on how to administer the meds that I received. I was so annoyed with the visit at that point that I didn't say anything and decided I would file the claim myself and never return. I already made my follow-up visit with Boston Animal Hospital. Don't go to this place because they obviously don't care about anything other than the money and have no knowledge about how insurance works. read more

Please don't bring your pet to this vet! I am not interested in writing reviews, but this case is exceptional because my experience was really bad and I care about the well being of pets. The vet was very rude with me and my dog, and at the end of the visit it was clear to me that he only cared about getting as much money as possible from me. - I just wanted a health certificate for my dog. The average cost is $150 for this paper, he charged us $466 for his 'services'. - We often travel to Chile with my dog, so I know very well the requirements. For this reason, I had the medicines for the required treatments, but he didn't accept them and he didn't even listen to me. - I was concerned about the costs, but he said that everything was included in the cost of the visit. - The worst is that injected my dog, who is very small and was very afraid (even I was sure that this was unnecessary and at my normal vet gives the same medicine orally) - The assistant was incredible rude with my dog. He is a very sweet dog and never bit anyone. But she graved him so hard and suddenly that he bit her hand. In summary, this was a very stressful and negative experience for me and my dog. Not only I felt not heard and mistreated by the vet and his staff, but also I felt so bad for bringing my dog there... Finally, the cost of the visit was ridiculous and completely over the top for what I asked for. So, please avoid this place. I highly recommend Huron Vet, which is located close by and where we always have a good experience. read more

I haven't been to this place in years, though I used to have two cats who were regulars. I can't complain about the service, but rather the prices and the manner of Dr. Weiner. His techs were nice, but he didn't exude any kind of animal love at all. Plus, I'm always a bit suspicious of vet offices that double as pet care product sources. Consistently, though, in the years since I've found another vet to gush over (Dr. Ulrich at Huron Vet in Somerville), I've encountered many people who were completely dissatisfied with Dr. Weiner. I've only been to Cambridge Vet for one appointment, so I don't have a lot to say yet. I already know, however, that the Doctor is experienced, professional, and kind. Very sweet with my young puppy. And I already know that he will be there when we return. I went to Porter Square for 16 years with my bichon, who died two years ago. I called Porter Sq. to make an appointment for Pup because she was scooting. They couldn't fit us in any time soon, so I gave a call to Cambridge Vet. This was a lucky day! Calliope was seen later that day. Porter Sq. is fine, but in all those years, I don't think we ever saw the same doctor twice. I too was there 2 days ago with my sick pup, the Dr's bed side manner is rude, cold and very insensitive! The Secretary is the first person to greet everyone, she is rude and has a miserable look about her. The nurse was a bitch and just as insensitive as the rest of them. All they wanted was money from me they didn't give a rats arse about my dog or me. When I asked the Dr if I should go else where to get care and financial help he told me they would charge me way more than 2,000.00 so of course I trust he was being honest! And they forgot to tell me they had financing, after I called to tell them my dog passed! Well my dog was way worse within 2 hours if leaving ,from whatever shots they gave him he went down fast by 630 I had to bring him to Massachusetts Veterinary Hospital in Woburn where they told me had I brought him there first he may have had a chance! I believe this vet sent my dog over the edge and killed him. The Secretary tried to say I killed my dog, really??? he has checkups blood work every year and his next exam was on Aug 12th for his yearly blood work etc. All his platelets came back normal last testing no cancer nothing he was healthy beside allergies so he was on a strict diet since I got him 11 years ago. This place is what gives all vets a bad name, like money hungry, no compassion, no debth for animals!!! I hope this place closes down for alll these bad reviews! If there's more than a few bad reviews, then the place needs to close!! Never going back and anyone that goes there should get a second opinion! read more

I took my new puppy to this clinic because it seemed convenient and close by. Too bad I didn't read the reviews first. I found the clinic very cold but professional. Dr Weiner is very through but he and the staff do not relate to animals or humans. My biggest complaint is that they are very over-priced. They did a slew of unnecessary tests and shots which I, as a new owner, did not realize were not strictly necessary. He gave me pills for the puppy at over $8/ a tablet and gave me double what I needed while never mentioning price. I think you are far better off with a warmer and more reasonably priced establishment. read more

I love Dr Weiner. Our 15-year-old cat has been taken care of by Fresh Pond Hostpital, which was fine before it was sold to a corporation (never go near there again!!). But Dr Weiner is the best. He takes excellent care of our aging cat, he's not a fuzzy-wuzzy guy but he's thoroughly competent and caring of our animal. I trust him entirely. As for the price, he doesn't force care but will urge it. And in our case we put off some care because of the expense; it turns out our catwas much happier after we did the procedure that Dr W had suggested for the three preceding years. I really like this place, and I really like Dr. Tubman, who has seen our dog twice for routine checkups and vaccinations. I've only had a dog for a few years, so I don't have a ton of experience with vets, (probably seen 3-4 different ones), but I'm done being shocked by how expensive they are. Cambridge vet doesn't seem any more expensive than any other I've been to. Dr. Tubman has definitely been clear about each test or vaccine he recommends for our dog, and as far as I can tell these are completely routine for an active dog that spends a lot of time outdoors and around other dogs (bordatella, rabies, lyme, etc). These items tend to run around $30-$40 each, and the exam fee was somewhere around $60, so the costs do add up. Again, I've accepted that veterinary care is expensive, so I tend to judge a place based more on whether the vet tries to push you into getting some treatment or into some product that they sell. I never got any of this from Dr. Tubman. For example, we saw one vet in another city that took a look at the plaque buildup on our dog's teeth and immediately recommended a VERY expensive teeth cleaning, which we thought was odd for a fairly young dog. Upon seeing those same teeth, Dr. Tubman stuck his thumbnail in there and broke that plaque buildup right off and just recommended that we try to brush her teeth every couple of weeks or so. That's exactly the kind of thing I like in a vet- don't overcomplicate things. Bottom line: friendly staff, perfectly professional vet, and I don't feel like I'm getting pressured or taken for a ride when I go in there. We took our cat here for a rabies shot and to seek treatment for an ear infection. The vet took a swab and prepared a microscopic slide to diagnose the ear problem and gave us the correct medication. The problem cleared right up after that, for which we remained grateful. With the ear diagnosis out of the way, however, the vet then tried to convince us that the cat needed to have all his teeth removed--a "service," coincidentally, for which he charges something like $1500. He claimed that the cat was in a great deal of pain but that, thanks to an "evolutionary adaptation," "they don't show it." So how is it, I wonder, that we know the cat is in pain? "Cats don't need teeth," he also explained. These are not medically or scientifically sound arguments. I talked to another friend, who happens to be an MD, and she got the same spiel from him about the teeth of cats. She was just as shocked and disgusted as I was. Now, our cat happens to be a whiner. If the slightest thing is bothering him, he lets us know. And it's a good thing that he does, because cats DON'T ACTUALLY TALK. So there is no way that, if they showed no signs of pain, science or anyone else could know they were in pain. In fact, it wouldn't make any metaphysical sense to say, even of your roommate, "He is in pain," if he gave absolutely no sign of being in pain. But back to cats. According to Lascelles et al. (2007), "Evaluation of Client-Specific Outcome Measures and Activity Monitoring to Measure Pain Relief in Cats with Osteoarthritis," Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine 21: 410-16, "owner-based assessments" provide a reliable way of telling whether a cat is in pain. Pain is known to be present when cats have "aversive responses" to stimuli. You know that kitty's paw is sore when kitty doesn't want to stand on it, and you know that kitty's gums are sore when kitty isn't happy chewing. Owners are good judges of this. And they don't have a vested interest in teeth removal, which some might argue makes their pronouncements more trustworthy than those of people who do. Teeth resorption, gingivitis, and periodontitis are common in cats and can indeed cause pain. They even sometimes requires extractions. But when we took our cat to another vet for his next rabies booster (no way we're going back to these guys), she said, "Yeah, there's some gingivitis and resorption, so if your cat starts to have trouble eating, we might have to give a cleaning at some point in the future." When we mentioned the extraction recommendation, she was puzzled. Nothing remotely like that appeared to be medically warranted in her opinion. Back to our visit to Cambridge Veterinary care. When we indicated that we were not interested in the vet's aggressive, surgical approach, he seemed to get rather brusque and self-righteous, as if we were guilty of animal cruelty for not instantly going along with his scheme to remove body parts from our pet, for no compelling reason, at the cost of a month's wages. And he pointed to the happy orange cat prowling about the office, saying, "See, that cat was miserable before, but since I've taken out all its teeth it's been really happy." I thought to myself, Well, over the years I've known quite a few happy three-legged cats too, but I'm not about to authorize anybody to start lopping off kitty's legs on the basis of those success stories. Cats can get along without a lot of things. Humans don't "need" teeth either, I suppose. He also tried to sell us grooming services, which they only perform on cats under general sedation (with the itinerant risks, which he didn't mention). At a cost of something in the ballpark of $250. No thank you. Our new vet recommended instead that we buy a $12 grooming tool, of a sort we were unfamiliar with, at any pet store. She made no money from this, and it works great. UPDATE: Only now have I read over the other posts. The tenor of them is alarming! After reading people's stories about having drugs pushed at them, which fits the general, interventionist pattern, I can't help wondering whether Orange Kitty is so chirpy in part because she's on a bunch of medication. I notice also that there are a number of very credible stories, fitting the same pattern, among the reviews listed as "not currently recommended," because Yelp's automated software has weeded them out. They may simply have been weeded out because they describe suboptimal experiences that involve keywords that the robot thinks are not good. The robot is not wrong about that part. I am new to the area and took my dog here for a yearly wellness exam to establish a vet in the area. Unfortunately this will not be the place I will be taking my dog in the future. Everyone in the office was super friendly and attentive EXCEPT the actual vet himself. While I am sure Dr. Weiner is competent in his field, I have never met such an unenthused vet! Before even examining my dog he was on the computer preparing our bill. I couldn't believe it! Additionally, he recommended blood work for my WELL dog stating that it was standard. Luckily I have always had dogs in my household growing up and he is not my first vet and therefore I knew better and refused the unnecessary testing. At times he even came across as rude and condescending. Needless to say I will not be returning. read more

I've taken my cats here a few times. I like them. They are more expensive for a visit than Banfield, but Banfield can probably afford to charge less because they are in PetSmart. Dr. Wiener is very knowledgeable and thorough. He was nice to my cats. He told me that one cat had resorptive lesions. I am moving, so he told me to have it checked out in my new area. He gave me handouts on the problem. I will definitely have my cat checked out after I move. I have no reason to doubt that my cat has dental issues, and I want her to be pain free so I will take her to be seen soon. Veterinary care is expensive, and I am not immune to sticker shock (I paid over 2000 dollars to a different clinic a few years ago when my cat got gastritis from eating easter grass !@#$%$#). But I've seen a lot of vets. They're all expensive. Given that fact, I was satisfied with my experience there. read more

Dr. Weiner is an excellent veterinarian. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is simply a top-notch, A+, exceptional doctor for your pet. He has taken extraordinarily good care of my dog over the past several years. I am an over-protective, hypochondriacal dog parent and he could not be more understanding or accommodating of my requests and questions. Dr. Weiner is also a lovely and caring person. I once ran into his office late and frazzled needing to borrow $5 for parking. He lent me the money himself with a smile and then accommodated my dog into his busy schedule, despite my lack of punctuality. I would also note that Myrna, who is Dr. Weiner's wife, business partner, and receptionist, is also a warm and conscientious person who takes personal care of her patients. Myrna goes out of her way to answer my many questions by phone and e-mail, and to get me prompt information from Dr. Weiner whenever needed.
