We had to bring our 5-year-old, 15-lb Pomeranian to the clinic after he started gagging and vomiting bile--possibly from eating something questionable around Central Square. From the moment we called ahead to say we were on our way, the staff were incredibly responsive and ready for us when we arrived. They quickly assessed the situation, diagnosed the issue, and carried out the necessary procedures. The clinic itself was very clean, welcoming, and well equipped. Dr. Estes explained everything clearly--what was happening, the prognosis, and what we should do next. The techs / nurses--Kim Nguyen, Kendra Baker, and Jennifer Ducharme--were also wonderful: professional, patient, and very caring. They were attentive throughout the entire process while our Pomeranian was undergoing sedation, and you could tell they genuinely cared. I'm sure they see situations like this every day, but they still treated our dog with the attention and care he needed. Small things like that matter. These are clearly very capable people who could work in many different fields--including human medicine--but they choose to care for pets, and it shows. I would absolutely recommend this clinic and would return again if needed. My one tip: call ahead so they can prepare for your arrival. read more

it was wild in the best possible way - every single person from the receptionist to the head surgeon was radiant with competence, smarts, compassion, and total commitment to the best outcome for my cat. Open space concept for procedures & surgery (!!) so you can be as involved as you want, with a small private room for me & the cat where much of her treatment and waiting happened. That reduced stress on her and we were never separated which I so appreciate. Her surgeon came up with plans A - C from least to most invasive . A failed, we moved on to B which worked beautifully so we avoided C = major surgery. I recommend VEG without reservation. read more

I brought my cat in two weeks ago. My bill was $5000. They kept her overnight. I went to my regular vet today and they told me half the test that they ran on my cat was unnecessary. I had to open a new credit card. I am grateful that my cat is doing OK. And they helped her, but I truly believe that they took me for a ride. read more

We had to bring our French bulldog to VEG after complications from her spay/episioplasty. She was having a couple of days of bloody diarrhea and we had already brought her to another emergency vet and nothing had improved. We brought her to VEG at like 4am and they were so patient and kind. The vet came over and talked to us and made sure we knew exactly what the plan would be as well as the cost before we proceeded with anything. She also helped us understand the insurance aspect of it as well. They ended up keeping her for a day and she was a COMPLETELY different dog when she came home to us. The new food, fluids, and new medication truly turned her around in the right direction. The communication was stellar from tests to calls about updates for our dog as well as pickup times and communicating to determine next steps of care. I will truly never take my dog to a different emergency vet after the care and compassion we received from ALL staff at 4am! Truly an amazing team. Updating my review after I had to take my pup here again. Unfortunately the night was a bit of a blur, so I don't remember the names of any of the doctors or vet techs that worked on my pup, but they were all amazing (especially the vet tech who was my dog's primary caregiver, who was constantly checking in on me in a very traumatic situation. Although I told her I was fine, she made sure I had a comfortable place to sit and be with my dog, and got me blankets and a pillow that she told me to keep with me). The doctors were always extremely honest and transparent about outcome possibilities. They diagnosed my dog very quickly, and never outwardly broke a sweat or seemed nervous while stabilizing him. I was most impressed by the "transport service" that they provided to the ICU at the nearby major animal hospital which had more diagnostic equipment and had specialized surgeons should he end up needing that care - they arranged everything, were in communication with that hospital to make sure the medical handoff went smoothly, and then transported my dog in a van with vet techs to ensure he would remain stable. The vet techs who helped with transport insisted I keep the pillow and blankets which came in handy as I spent the night in the ICU, and were all incredibly sympathetic. Unfortunately my pup didn't make it but it was through absolutely no fault of VEG, and it is to their credit that he held on long enough to get to the ICU where we were able to discover exactly what was wrong with him and then help him pass a little more easily than he would have otherwise. My heartfelt thanks to whoever worked on Julius at the time (June 5), and especially his main vet tech. I wish I could remember her name, but she was such a comforting presence to have by my side on a night where I was given some awful news about my furry family member. read more

I will update this review if I go in person for services, but I checked out their website and saw they recommend calling before coming in even for urgent care, so I gave this location a call to ask about a cough my dog has been having for the past couple days. I described his symptomology, and the doctor they put me on the phone with was patient and listened and gave me her opinion, which was to monitor him but not bring him in just yet. I appreciate being able to talk to a clinician. Obviously, you can't get a definite medical diagnosis over the phone but I got some peace of mind that what I'm dealing with is at least not an immediate emergency -- saving me some money. read more

My daughter's 2 year old hamster was hobbling and could barely stand on her paw and we were extremely worried. She hadn't been eating, drinking, sleeping, peeing, or pooping. She needed immediate care, and many places were closed by that time. It was about 9pm, luckily VEG ER was open, we called and brought our hamster 15 minutes later. They immediately jumped into action checking her symptoms and seeing whatever they could do to help her. Eventually, we were told that she had Urinary Tract Infection, we were offered a few solutions, but one of the main veterinarians who was helping, gently told us the likely outcome. We were able to say goodbye to the hamster, and my daughter got to hold her up to almost the end. They led us into a room so that my daughter and I could discuss next steps, they gave us time and they were very understanding. When we received our pet in her urn, we also received a handwritten card with the signatures of all the VEG ER employees who were telling us that they were sorry for our loss. It was a very sentimental time, and we appreciate everything that VEG ER did for us. If anything every happens to your pet, I recommend VEG ER because of their kindness, also, they are open 24/7 so there is always someone there to help you and your beloved companion. read more

I will forever be grateful for the kindness and compassion of the staff at VEG in Fresh Pond. Our 8-year-old dog, Maggie, suddenly got sick in June 2025, and needed emergency surgery. We were allowed to stay with our dog throughout all the testing, and we could visit anytime, day or night, while she recovered. They have an amazing group of professionals and all the most advanced equipment and testing available. Sadly, the biopsy revealed an aggressive cancer. She came home, but ultimately it was not survivable. The staff at VEG was the most incredible team of people I have ever witnessed. They offered comfort while our hearts were breaking. These amazing vets and techs and support staff witness the most tragic and traumatic situations, and they carry people through it with such grace. They are heroes. My dog was attacked by another dog while on a walk. We called here and they said we could bring her in. There was no wait. We were there for a few hours, and they were absolutely wonderful. We were there with my five year old, and they had coloring books, snacks, and juice boxes! The bathroom was also the cleanest bathroom I have ever seen, and they have hand towels to use in addition to the air dry fan(5 year old thinks air dry fans are way too loud!). The good thing about VEG (all locations) is that they are there when you need them for your pet's emergency care. I also really like that you can be with your pet throughout the visit. I've been to the Cambridge location for my dog once and the Newton location three times. In particular at my visit to the Cambridge location, I feel these was a strong push for tests that were over the top for my dog's issue & symptoms - maybe they truly want to cover all the bases but really felt more like they're trying to pad the bill by making me feel guilty. I now realize that because VEG is private equity funded, there are likely metrics and KPIs that drive this. Just be aware if this should you need to bring you pet. read more

We brought our dog in due to dizzines among other things. We got seen super fast. We saw the vet in around 2ish minutes. We got labs done as well as X-rays. The vet even showed us into the X-ray room to review what he saw with us. Everyone was very communicative and professional with us and we got to stay with our dog the whole time! (Minus when he went to get X-rayed.) The only downside was the cost which insurance refused to cover (big surprise). Overall, a wonderful and professional experience and would reccomend! read more

On 1/2/2025 my nearly 15 year old maltipoo Django had been suffering all day and couldn't hold anything down, his legs gave out and we knew that his end was near. We made an appointment for the vet to come to our house but due to the holidays we couldn't get an appointment for 2 days. My husband and I brought our beloved pup to bed, he was suffering so much that we took him at 12:30 am to VEG to be ushered over the rainbow bridge. Django never liked going to the vet so we had always agreed when the time comes we'll have the vet come to the house. Well sometimes you can't control the end so we wrapped him up in a cozy blanket and brought him to VEG. Due to it being so late the place was empty. We were gently greeted by staff who by looking at our grief stricken faces, knew exactly why we were there. We told them Django's age and symptoms and they took us to the treatment room. I asked if I could lower the lights and they immediately did, creating a less clinic atmosphere. They let us hug and pat and whisper in Djangos ears all the while being so kind and respectful to our grieving process. Dr. Kim was the vet and he couldn't have been more gentle with Django and empathic towards us. Darius was the tech who did paperwork and brought us a second tissue box all the while being nurturing and respectful. There was another person who shaved Django who was also amazingly kind. The whole time we got to be present and my daughter,husband and I gently laid hands on Django while the medicine went in. Dr Kim then checked Django's heart rate 3 times to be sure he passed. They gave us alone time, never rushing our final moments with our most amazing dog and best little buddy. I received and online checkin text and even though there were a few patients waiting the nurse practitioner Kristen took immediate vital signs. From there, we sat in a clean waiting room as the Dr saw patients in order/priority. Received a consent text and estimated bill that we had to pay in advance. Services that won't be provided will be refunded after the visit. The Dr has a great bedside manner and the video monitor shows the status of all patients. If blood work is drawn, there is a 30 minute waiting period for results. An estimated $1,000 visit but worth the peace of mind and expert care. read more

What a wonderful experience. The staff was welcoming, attentive and caring. The facility is clean and I love that I get to stay with my pet the whole time. We brought our Golden Retriever in because he was vomiting and wheezing. It turns out he had pneumonia from getting sea water in his lungs. Special shout out to Dr McCoy, and Nurse Zack. But really the entire team were so friendly and thorough. They explained EVERYTHING in real time as they were diagnosing and treating him. Unbelievably Perfect Experience My cat had blood in her urine and because the litter I use is dark, I didn't notice it and her situation got much worse. She was clearly in pain by the time I realized she needed immediate medical attention but it was early on a Sunday morning so I had to do the miserable online research of finding a pet ER that got a decent star rating and wasn't 3 states away. I was freaked out that my baby was sick and I was fully expecting a nightmare experience, so imagine my surprise when I discovered that the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Cambridge had nothing but 5 star reviews! And when I called, the reason for those amazing reviews was evident. THEY.CARE. As a matter of fact, a VET took my call and was extremely thorough in questioning me about Georgie's symptoms so they'd be prepared when we could finally get there in the snow storm that happened to hit that day. When we arrived, I was delighted to see an open-plan treatment area with examination tables and sofas in the center and the xray, ultrasound, and other diagnostic equipment in rooms with windowed doors along the sides of the open area. You are literally never separated from your baby. Honestly, it feels like these guys took every complaint they'd ever heard about pet ERs and flipped it all to create a wonderful, stress-reducing, pet-first environment. The VEG is located in Cambridge and I'm an hour up the road in the North Shore/Cape Ann zone where I'm pretty sure that at least every other house has a pet or 12 in it so I really wish VEG would open an ER here in this vicinity. All that said, until they open up here, I'll schlep down to Cambridge anytime I have an emergency with a furry baby. These guys are simply the best. read more

Cannot recommend enough. My cat Alfredo came in with a urinary tract blockage. He was immediately seen and they had cleared the blockage within 90 minutes. The staff was so kind and understanding. I particularly appreciated being able to visit Alfredo whenever I wanted, watch the procedure as it occurred, and the text messages they sent every 12 hours with updates. I ended up visiting Alfredo every day, and they never failed to offer to make my setup more comfortable. I even ended up getting work done there for four hours on Saturday. They took what was a very stressful situation and made it manageable. There are too many staff members who helped to individually thank, but everyone from the doctors to the VAs were outstanding. They sent me home with specific care instructions and were able to answer questions by phone after discharge. The one comment I'd note is that the estimate was far higher than online estimates I had seen for this issue, but the actual cost was $1600 lower than the estimate bringing it in line with higher end estimates. I absolutely loved this Veterinary Emergency Group and will utilize them again if necessary. The whole entire set-up and experience was excellent and professional. I told them my budget and they were able to do everything that was necessary to help my Mario. I noticed that morning he was licking and biting at his booty and he rarely does this because I wipe him after he poops. This time I noticed he had a small pimple on his anus and I didn't think much of it because it looked like a natural part of the skin creases of an anus and normal. Well by early afternoon, that same pimple swelled to the size of a dime and then burst shortly after and I was shocked and immediately called around town to find an EV. I've used a few vets in the pass for him but the last one I could remember was by Sullivan Station in Somerville, it was a bit busy and I didn't like the way I couldn't come in with Mario. After searching the internet I came across this one and what a GOLD Mine and Top Tier Service! The staff were very helpful and I was in and out within an hour tops. The vet informed me that this was normal for an anus gland to burst on it's own so they cleaned the wound, put a cone to prevent Mario from licking and medications for the recovery process. The whole process and treatment was under $425.00 so my wallet was smiling too. Thanks VEG I forgot to write a review when this happened back in 6/23. read more

The vets and nurses explained everything they were doing, and gave us choices in the care our kitty recieved. When we first entered I was surprised that much of the care is given in a large communal space, but it was great seeing everyone working together so efficiently. It was busy and understandably, we had to wait a bit, but it never felt like we were being ignored (and the wait time was less than I anticipated) The employees really seemed to get along well and enjoy working there, which made for a pleasant environment.
