For those who have been challenged with handling a reactive dog , you understand the mental toll it takes and how isolating and hopeless it can feel . You thought you did everything right by giving your dog so much love and socialization only to now be faced with questions and comments like " why didn't you just train your dog ?" , " you're not the alpha to your dog", " you shouldn't be a dog owner" on a regular basis. I have a 6 year old boxer ( the social , goofy clowns of the dog breeds) . I've worked with dogs in the past as a kennel attendant, and grown up with dogs my entire life and never thought I would be in this situation . I struggled to find a trainer whose techniques showed progress which lead to inconsistency, a lot of frustration and doubt . Eventually taking him places like the vet and groomer caused me such extreme anxiety. When I met Tom , my dog was unapproachable by strangers , including Tom initially. It took a month or so of meeting up , going on walks and practicing techniques at home but I was seeing improvement! Not long after Tom was able to take the leash from me and walk Gus, and we could walk near other people without Gus acting like a total maniac , lunging , barking and snapping. It was like he was a normal (ish) dog . Gus is 6 , so it will be a slow process to break him out of this behavior , but he has improved so much in the last 6 months .. I never thought I would get this far. I still have my work cut out for me but this training has also helped me increase my confidence as a dog owner and learn to trust my dog again. I'm not longer so nervous to take him out on walks because I feel like I'm in control.( Holding back an 80 pound boxer is not an easy task ) . Tom saved our family! Our English bulldog Sam had never been well trained, but things got out of hand when he became aggressive towards my husband. We had tried another dog trainer whose methods did not work for Sam and were looking into rehoming him. It was breaking my heart, especially since even the rescue would not take him because of his bite history. When we first met Tom at the end of last summer, we really appreciated how honest and straightforward he was in his assessment of our family's situation--Sam had control of our home. Tom was professional and kind as he went over his plan for Sam and told us it would require my husband and I to work hard and commit to the training. After discussing our options, we decided to continue forward with Tom and his plan because we wanted to try everything we could to keep Sam in our family. It has been about five months now, and our lives are so much better! We are still working on some behaviors and commands, and we know it will still be a long time before we feel comfortable introducing Sam to strangers or other dogs. However, our day-to-day life is so much easier because Sam actually listens to us and knows there will be consequences when he does not. We used to have to bribe him with treats to get him to even go outside for us. Now, he comes out with one command from either of us. I used to be too scared to walk Sam on my own because he would get excited and bite at my feet if a car went by. Now, we are able to go on walks without trouble and when he accidentally slipped his harness a few weeks ago, I was actually able to get his leash back on him--I thought I had lost him for sure! A year ago, if we dropped anything on the floor, we knew it was gone. Sam destroyed multiple T.V. remotes and cell phones. Now, we can actually leave our shoes out and he doesn't touch them! It's amazing. We know if we keep firm boundaries with Sam and keep working with Tom, we will continue seeing success with Sam. We could not be any more grateful for Tom. This was the best thing I've ever spent my money on. Tom was amazing with our little demon chihuahua. She was aggressive, extremely territorial, and fearful of going outside. He gave us the tools we needed to reign in her behavior. He helped us develop a plan that was personalized to us. Other trainers I reached out to were adamant about restrictions that really would not have worked in our household. Tom listened and took the time to walk us through the program step by step. Yes, Tom specializes in training dogs. And training people to train dogs:) Because his philosophy is intelligent, thoroughly considered, and user-friendly, the tools he teaches can and do overlap with training in various disciplines. Tom possesses a true and informed understanding of both canines and humans. Working with him was reassuring (if there's any way to be reassured when you have a puppy), fun, and extremely helpful to both of us humans and to both dogs. Worst place to go It's a scam. They come out and get you to sign up then they don't bother to come out to train you. When you finally get an appointment it's for 20 min only. Many vets don't approve of them. Do research before giving anyone $1,500 Waist of time and money. Where do I even begin... My dog Bo (a corgi mix) had began to pick up some bad habits after he turned 2 years old. He became more and more protective and aggressive as years went on, especially towards people he didn't know who came to "his territory". I can't recommend Camelot Dog Training or Tom Porier enough after he helped my dog when nobody else could. My dog had real reactivity issues towards other dogs. I had hired one trainer who, after working with him a few times, told me that I'd just have to live with his behavior, because "once a dog is like that, it's very hard to change their behavior". I called around a bit and, after that experience, didn't find anyone I was comfortable who was willing to take on my dog's challenges. I was learning to accept this, but then I talked to a friend who had heard about Tom from his veterinarian, and I gave him a call. Tom assured me that my dog could be helped, and while he said he'd be committed to working with me until I was satisfied and comfortable with the results, I couldn't believe the change after just one session. I quickly came to realize that the training was as much about me as it was for my dog, and I now feel extremely confident in him, and in my ability to communicate with him. Tom from Camelot Dog training changed our lives. After completing puppy kindergarten and having been socialized regularly, our dog began to exhibit aggressive behaviors. His high energy and stubborn personality were always a challenge, but this frightened us. We worked with multiple trainers and techniques but they only helped (slightly) when our dog had no distractions. When anything got too close, the training was useless. Tom from Camelot Dog Training was and is a great dog trainer for us. He tells you he is your dog trainer for life and he really is. We tried group dog training classes with our puppy and sure we learned how to get her to sit for treats, but our puppy still had some problems that our training in the group setting wasn't helping. Our puppy had a bad case of resource guarding and separation anxiety so we call Tom. The first meeting Tom spend 2 1/2 hours with us going over the program, doing some basic training and was very helpful. We started our program with Tom and followed his guidelines and we would do our training at the house or at the dog park. Tom would never really put a cap on the time he would spend with us and our dog. Our dog really did well with his training, we graduated his program and now have met with him a few more times for check ups to see how we are still doing.
