Two days ago, I went to Camelot Theater (Palm Springs Cultural Center) for Foodie Friday and a movie (Fried Green Tomatoes). I was disappointed by the selection of food options. Only 2 available when we got there and a third arrived later, although they set up very quickly. There was Cajun food, Indian food, and food from the cafe in the theater. I decided bot to partake as I was not impressed with this selection. However, I will give it another try in the future. Maybe the selection will be more varied. The movie was great and popcorn and soda was very reasonable prices. read more

This theater is also known as Palm Springs Cultural Center. It's an amazing place. I was there last weekend seeing a movie strange little movie like a Sundance movie called Christie Judy. It was in the smaller of the theaters. The seats are old the theater seems old, but it has a certain charm to it, and it's very well soundproof while I was watching this movie there was a play going on and to other movies but we heard nothing. I strongly suggest coming here in fact, download their app or get a copy of their calendar because there's always something wonderful happening at this location. read more

I'm having the best weekend in Palm Springs that I've had in a long time! Not wanting to see a mainstream movie, I was researching the art house/foreign movies and stumbled across L'Arconcouer (the Heartbreaker). It was only showing at the Camelot theater, so we made our way over for a 7:30 show. Walking up, the parking lot was nearly empty. I walked up the window and asked for 3 tickets. I gave the cashier my card. She wasn't able to get the computer to communicate, so she comped us our tickets because I didn't have enough cash to cover the ticket price! Where does that happen? Apparently, at the Camelot theater that happens. I thanked her profusely and walked in. A very nice young man behind the snack bar tore our tickets. Jeff noticed a little cafe to the right of where we entered. He walked over and glanced at the menu of choices they had there. The gentleman behind the counter was sharing that the food bought there (sandwiches, for example) could be taken into the auditorium. I was impressed by the offerings they had there. He also shared that the bar upstairs had about 30 different choices for appetizers, all for about $4 each, but that food had to be consumed there. Jeff and my niece went up to investigate. I went to the concession stand. (A man needs popcorn sometimes.) I walked into the auditorium. It was a huge auditorium. The chairs had wooden backs and the seats were wide. On the side walls were arches with curtains hanging down. The screen area was covered by a curtain that matched the colors of the side curtain. I noticed a stage in front of the screen. There were also stage lights hanging over our heads. On my parent's dish network there is a music channel called "Beautiful Music." When I sat down, they were playing that same kind of music. Think orchestral Muzak movie soundtracks. I enjoyed it, strangely enough. The projection was crisp and bright. (At one point the movie stopped for a second, no doubt a digital blip.) The sound was excellent, as was the temperature. Even when we left, after the movie, the staff was thanking us for coming. It is so refreshing to see a theater pay attention to details like that. I went to this theater during the GLBT Indy film festival. The theaters are smaller than your usual theater. Which is something I liked. Theater is very clean. The chairs were comfortable. The small concession stand only led to the charm of this place. read more

Used to love this place...sad that the website is not working and I drive over to the theatre just now (5pm on Monday night) to find no signage of screening times and all the doors locked. There are three current films listed on the marquee, but no way of knowing if and when they will screen. Epic fail! read more

The Camelot is a fantastic theatre. I wish there were more of these types of theatres around, and less of the stadium multi-plex variety. Not just in terms of ambiance, but in terms of the types of films they screen as well. It's the spot for the off-the-beaten-path indie films, not just the big-budget stuff. The ambiance is certainly something else. With a cafe in there as well, you almost feel as though you're watching a show at the opera and not just a movie. It's small; it's intimate; and doesn't have the things you complain about at all the big mulit-plexes. Fantastic place to see a movie. All that said, one major caveat. Saw Jane Eyre last night with my Dad and was happy with the entire experience BUT the Cafe closed at 3pm and we got there at 4 to eat before our 5pm movie. So we left to grab something quick and almost missed the start. He was so excited to try their "gourmet foods" that are avertised. Seriously .... he drove from Indio to pick me up in Palm Desert, to drive all the way to Palm Springs to try the cafe. We passed many theaters along the way! My daughter and I saw "the best exotic marigold hotel" here. I have no idea how the other reviewer can call the screen "tiny" we were in theatre 1. It was huge. We loved our experience! The auditorium is beautiful and clean. My feet didn't stick to the floors... Large screen, stage, velvet curtains, ornate walls... It's old school but not decaying. The sound was excellent... Perfect experience. We only paid $7.00 for adult tickets mid week... That made it even better. read more

I love this theater! I came here to see a friend's movie premiere and the seating was ample, the architecture was interesting, there is a restaurant/cafe upstairs, and another cafe where you can buy alcohol to bring into the theater. I even brought in a giant frozen yogurt concoction with a frozen banana sticking out of it and the staff were so nice to let me bring it in. I love the indie feel of the theater and love that they support such great artists. read more

Greetings, Attended the Lyons Noir Film Festival featuring Guest Sara Karloff. This venue was full for a Mother's Day matinee featuring Boris Karloff's daughter who screened rare home movies, her famous father's last television interview, and the 1945 feature "The Body Snatcher" on 35mm. Camelot is a comfortable venue with great climate, nice seating, and reasonably priced concessions. Sound system was excellent, and seating provided a fine view of the screen. I went last night to see "Rider" which was a great movie but the experience was severely lessened because they left the wall lights on during the entire movie. Additionally, the floor lights delineating the aisles were much too bright during the movie which is very distracting if you are sitting in an aisle seat. The commercials before the movie started were deafeningly loud; so loud that I had to leave the theater (#2) and return at the start of the film. The theater stank of body odors and there was debris in the aisles. Lastly, the men's room was filthy. C'mon, Camelot, get your act together. read more

The perfect small cinema, the kind I'm always surprised to find outside of Los Angeles! Always has the movies that I want to see (smaller indies, documentaries, international) that never show up in bigger theaters. Special events round out the bunch- including classic movie nights, some of which are paired with dinner at the Cafe upstairs. Rock bottom tickets especially for matinees, very cheap snacks, friendly staff, special events, the movies I want to see... One of my favorite theaters on Earth. read more

Camelot tends to ignore requests that they provide caption devices for the Deaf Community. We even do not know if they have one. Deaf moviegoers have hesitated whether they should go or not. Some drove many miles to see a movie but only to find no captions on a certain movie is available. They do not advertise very well. read more

Nice clean movie theater. The two girls working the refreshment stand were very nice. The customer in front of me was very demanding and yet both girls were patient with her. I end up tipping the two girls for their kindness and help. My only suggestion is to get more comfortable seats. But I'm sure that is easier said than done. I'll definitely be back to see more movies! read more

I had a similar problem where I drove to the Camelot to see a film, but the computer would not cooperate. Rather than comp me a ticket as they did for the 3 in the other review, they left me waiting in the hot sun until I finally gave up and left.. The girl at the desk was unconcerned that my movie was about to start and I might want to use the bathroom and buy some popcorn first. read more

We absolutely love this movie theater. The movies they have are usually really good indie movies. The staff are very warm and friendly. The main theater is clean and huge. Also, their popcorn is REALLY good and ALWAYS fresh! They do have a pretty good cafe too if you want a meal. There is never a problem with parking. They do offer discounts for seniors too. read more

Being that I live in Riverside, art house film theaters don't really exist in a thirty mile radius. So I was especially excited to check out Camelot during a springtime trip to Palm Springs. I eyed the Cinebar's menu online carefully and was excited about the prospect of eating tasty food there before or after a thoughtful film that I wouldn't otherwise be able to find in the entire county. But I was there on a Monday and the Cinebar was closed, much to my dismay! I'd arrived early to snack there first, so instead I purchased my ticket, got my free* popcorn, and proceeded to the theater. It was small and sticky, more like a lot of second-run theaters than what I expected from the outside, and I was disappointed by how worn out and threadbare it seemed. I reassured myself that I was there for the film, not the ambiance, and began devouring my popcorn with the appetite I'd brought for Cinebar. Not unlike the looks of movie theater itself, it tasted old and sticky. A few people wandered into the theater shortly after me, and the showing is what you might expect turnout to be for a Monday afternoon. I heard a bit of sound leak from the adjacent theater, but most the time was too immersed in the film I was watching to notice the sound, theater's shabbiness, or my sad burned popcorn. But I suppose that is really what I came for -- a film that was challenging and interesting, and couldn't be found in the mainstream Regals and AMCs. Camelot is worth it for this; I just wish the interior look fit its pleasant exterior. I can't wait to return next time I'm in PS to check out another indie/foreign film and finally try out the Cinebar. I truly enjoy attending events at this theatre. It is conveniently located near my home, and I have had the pleasure of taking part in many film festivals and special screenings. The café food is tasty and the employees are always professional. The weekend farmer's market that takes place in the theatre parking lot is an added bonus. 15 mins early. ticket both closed and line coming out front door. one register open at concession stand for purchasing tickets and refreshments. waited in line for over 30 mins before getting near cashier only to find out the movie had already started 10 min previously. several people that were in front of us and behind us, including ourselves walked out. they had 4 people behind the counter but only one register...did I mention that we stood outside in the rain? not going to give them second chance =( read more

It's hard to imagine living in Palm Springs without the art house movie theater, cafe and wonderful staff that are the Camelot. As an avid (some would say rabid) moviegoer, I have more affection for this business than any other in town. Yeah, you can find cinematic experiences in town with cushier seating, but you won't find anything approaching the quality of indie and foreign films that screen here, to say nothing of the employees both downstairs and up.
