Please, NEVER go here, for the sake of your wallet and your camera: This place was way over-priced. I went in looking for reflectors and a kit for cleaning my camera sensor. I also mentioned I was a bit of a rookie in photography (apparently a huge mistake). They were out of reflectors, so I asked what I would need to clean my sensor (this was my first time doing it). This is what he sold me, and the prices: 1 X tissue: 2.99 1 X swab: 4.99 1 Eclipse solution: 11.99 Dust-off compressed air: 9.99 Total: 32.15!! huh! Firstly, compressed air!! Every video I've ever seen on cleaning a sensor strongly advises against using compressed air because it can get the propellant onto the camera and destroy it. And, secondly, 10 dollars, really? walmart sells the exact same brand in a 3 pack of cans twice the size for 12 dollars... so their price was a 500% mark up, and I didn't even need it (indeed I could have destroyed my camera using the crap he said I needed). Next, the swab. Another 400-500% markup from everything I've found online. They average just over a dollar a piece. Just look up on amazon or anywhere what you can get for 32 dollars. If you want a lesson in not shopping around, than this is your place. Anyways, I certainly can be blamed for not doing my homework, and I've paid for it (luckily without messing up my camera), but I hope this saves someone else from this second rate store that will have no problem ripping you off. read more

I went to the new location on Washington St. NE and received very good service. I know next to nothing about cameras but needed one for work that was simple to operate and also had the ability to video. The young woman could have taken advantage of my ignorance, but rather sold me something very user friendly and affordable. She also showed me how to operate it and answered all my questions. First of all, the business sign looks like a 5 year old designed it on Microsoft word. Secondly, the owner has a shit ass attitude and acted like he did not want me and my group of friends (all of which are photography students) in his store at all. He was extremely unhelpful when we asked questions. My friend asked if he carried Polaroid SX-70 film and he proceeded to tell us it is no longer made?? We came into the store to buy things and ended up not getting anything due to his shitty personality as a store owner. read more

So I did not plan well and did not bring my camera's battery charger with me. Unfortunately, they did not have a duplicate battery for me, but the kind gentleman sold us a battery charger, which could be charged in our car. Since we were on the road, this was invaluable. Camera & Darkroom earned my five stars by their treatment of my camera from the 1950s (purchased fifteen years ago on eBay after many hours of reading about cameras and talking to experienced photographers). I've started using the camera again after leaving it in a drawer for ten years. The shutter release did not operate smoothly while I was shooting my test film last week, so I asked Art for help. He took the camera in the back and returned maybe three minutes later with the shutter release in good working order. No BS about how it needed expensive repairs. Just a comment about how lubricants fail when a camera goes unused. And advice about keeping it working from here on. I'd say, this combination of expertise and honesty is priceless. read more

Camera and Darkroom is a gem! I am new to Albuquerque and just before moving, bought a used Hasselblad. I had been using a TLR and was unfamiliar with the mechanisms and managed to lock up the winder. Art was not only knowledgable but kind, articulate, bright, and encouraging. He spent the better part of an hour talking about important things to remember (do you see daylight?) and regaled me with history and marvelous tidbits about lens development, etc. They sell and process film, sell new and used equipment, and are a delight. They have my business and I recommend them highly. read more

We left on vacation without our Olympus camera charger. After a very thorough online search, it became obvious that I wasn't going to find a replacement charger in a big box store. We were on our way to Albuquerque so I looked up camera shops and found Camera & Darkroom... they stated they carried some older items!! After a quick chat, I knew this store was going to be able to find a way to help! We arrived 45 minutes later and walked out of the store in less than 10 minutes with generic charger that also included a cigarette plug. My camera battery is charging as we speak. Unfortunately in all my excitement I forgot the name of the woman that helped me in the store. She was extremely efficient, problem stoved effectively, sold me a quality product at a reasonable price and even offered to open up the plastic package for me know that I was traveling and likely didn't have a scissors! Absolutely outstanding! I was in the market to purchase a higher end camera for my girlfriend but like many amateurs, I had no idea what I needed. I walked in the front door and was greeted by Art, who knew in an instant, that he was not going to sell me a camera (he deals mainly in used equipment and knew right away that he did not have the camera that I needed), but he proceeded to give me a crash coarse in camera technology anyway. We spoke for about 45 min about different features and options and he advised me on what camera I should buy and where I should go to find it. You don't get service like that anymore...Needless to say, I purchased the Cannon G7X that he recommended and we are thrilled with it's performance! Thank you again Art for taking the time - you may not have made a dime for the time that you spent, but you most definitely made a friend! read more

I love this place, it's my go to camera store fore both equipment and advice, great place to get film developed and when I was setting up a complete darkroom at my house sold me everything I needed at a fantastic price. The place for photo needs in Albuquerque. They stock film up to 4x5, and have a great selection of used gear. It's a locally owned business that does a great job explaining items. They're a little pricier than B&H and New York mail order, but you get to handle the equipment and they're there to help afterwards. read more

I have visited Camera & Darkroom several times throughout the years with several purchases. I also occasionally buy photography "things" on the internet. On the most recent visit, the gentleman staff was extremely helpful, polite and courteous. He helped remove a stucked filter off my treasured lens so efficiently. He would not charge me a dime. My wife and I are on a road trip from Seattle to Atlanta and somewhere along the way my wife lost the lens cap for her Canon DSLR. We had to wait a few days until we got to a decent-sized town before looking for a store: online shopping does not work when travelling. Found this store on Google and went in on Saturday morning. They had a lens cap to fit the large lens at a reasonable price: OK it was more than on ebay but this is a brick and mortar store with much higher overheads. We were served by Art and when my wife mentioned that autofocus had stopped working he cleaned the contacts, tested the lens on a new camera in the store, and refitted it to my wife's camera. All for no extra charge. Who says customer service is dead? read more

I'm an amateur photographer, and I walked in looking for a manual Nikkor lens. I should have done more research before I arrived, because these guys sold me a used lens for $200 more than what's available on eBay, and in great numbers (Nikkor 50mm F 1.4 ai for $300, worth about $100-150 on eBay). Total rip off--purchasing the lens is my fault, which fuels my anger. The store is also dirty and disorganized. In the age of online sales, I understand the need to support local camera stores, so that they don't continue to disappear, but I will never return to this place; I'll order my film equipment from B&H instead read more

I have taken my film here multiple times because I thought it was the only place in ABQ that does film. I've had several experiences here with misprinting and just plain bad service. A friend recommended me to Picture Perfect on Menaul and Juan Tabo and I'm never going back. They have great service, it's way cheaper and MUCH faster. read more

I got higher quality photos printing at FedEx (formerly Kinkos), and when I complained about the quality of the prints at Camera & Darkroom the *owner* was extremely rude. The people in this store are the best! I don't live in Albuquerque but the autofocus on my camera stopped working and I needed a quick fix before I could get back to California.
