It was my first time today! The place was clean, it had massive glass cases filled with doughnuts, baked goods etc! The counter has about 9 different juice drinks to choose from. I got the street tacos and it was very good! The salsa was super runny and watery but maybe it was just an off batch, that happens at restaurants I frequent. The staff were very kind and helpful. We got our orders in good time, for a good price and good service. I found it odd that they were not too busy considering how good everything was it should be run over with people. The parking situation could be a bit tricky if you drive a massive truck but the average vehicle no problem. read more

We ordered delivery from here. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the quality of Mexican food in Memphis. It's no Texas or California, but it's better here than say NYC or Atlanta... Pretty tasty... This place is ready to miss if it's your first time. The food was delicious, but what stole the show was the guacamole. That was better than anything I've had living in San Diego. The carne asada was tender and everything had so much flavor and was seasoned well. The Agua frescas were really good too. Started off amazing! My family of 6 started with 3 basket of chips, 6 separate bowls of salsa, prompt drinks and cheese dip and ordering. And we never saw our waiter again. Sat for 30 mins waiting on our food with cold cheese dip because we ran out of chips, and empty glasses of $3 drinks. Then when we finally got food, which consisted of a quesadilla and 10 tacos. First time we've eaten here and definitely not our last. Not the fancy of places, but everyone is friendly and the restaurant is clean. We were told to sit anywhere. Chips, salsa and two hot sauces arrived with some water. All were very good, but unfortunately the chips were stale. Hate stale chips ! Ordered the eggs with chorizo and potatoes, refried beans and flour tortillas & a carne asada burrito. Everything was excellent! So many Mexican restaurants have sprung up on Macon Road that it's giving Summer Avenue a run for the money. I recently met a friend for lunch at Caminos de Michoachan and spied her parked about 100 feet from me, waiting in front of another restaurant. We both stepped back and looked at the signs to double-check before we walked in the right place, and were immediately enveloped by the sweet aroma of baking pastry and consumed with carnivorous lust from the smell of grilling meat. I was at odds, feeling both comforted and primal. But as I indulged heartily, I was back in balance before I left. The salsa verde served with the chips is a particularly tasty version, bursting with not just heat but also the big flavors of cilantro and garlic. It's got a bite, but it is the perfect foil to the creamy guacamole. There are two basic good guacamole salads (and several bad ones): One is chunky pieces of avocado dressed with lime juice and tossed with onion, tomato, cilantro and peppers. It's sprightly and refreshing. The second contains the same fresh ingredients, but the avocado is first mashed until creamy. This one, lush and soft, is the one Caminos de Michoachan serves. It's excellent, and so generously served that we didn't finish it. All of the basics are covered: tortas (served on big pillows of bread baked in-house), sopes, gorditas, enchiladas, burritos and so on. All of these (except possibly the burrito, which I didn't try) are exemplary examples of what we've come to think of as authentic Mexican around here. The chilaquiles, tortillas simmered in salsa (verde for me) and served with eggs on top, are a cut above any others. The sauce truly permeates the tortillas, which are served on the dry side instead of swimming in sauce. Mary and Leo Perez owned a Mexican restaurant in Chicago and moved to Memphis about five years ago to run Taqueria Guadalupana, now owned by Leo's relatives. The Perezes opened Caminos de Michoachan in Raleigh but moved to the Macon Road location in 2008 and combined the taqueria with the panaderia -- the bakery. Dozens of pastries line one wall. Empanadas filled with dulce le leche, Bavarian cream or fruit; cookies; doughnuts; several varieties of puff pastries, some topped with cinnamon and sugar and some filled; conchas (sweet bread with sugared tops); and the savory desayuno. The latter is a small loaf of soft bread with cream cheese and jalapeno peppers baked inside. For breakfast, the loaves are split and toasted with beans, ham and additional cheese -- and it's $1.50. Of all the dishes, and we tried quite a few over three visits, the shrimp in garlic sauce is the one I'll find myself craving frequently. It's a simple creation, and not oily like so many versions. Cloves of garlic are sliced and quickly sauteed with medium-sized, yet plump and flavorful, shrimp. They're served on a bed of rice, nestled between refried beans and a simple salad of lettuce, tomato and avocado. The tacos bear special mention, too. They're served on corn tortillas with your choice of meat (steak, pork, chicken, chorizo or tongue) and topped with diced onion, radish and cilantro. A grilled green onion and on request, grilled jalapeno peppers are served alongside. Two of them will set you back about $4. Combine cheap and good, and it equals muy bueno. Love this place. It's an authentic taqueria and a Mexican bakery at the same time. The servers are fast, friendly and willing to talk to you about their menu, their culture and their passions. I came here when my family was out of town based entirely on a Yelp review - and that is why I love Yelp so very much. This is such a great spot to go - it starts when you walk in the door. To the left is an entire wall of Mexican pastries - I am talking about authentic, delicious and voluminous. To the back right is a cooler with what tested like Sprite with actual sugar in it. A flat screen tv sat above the cooler playing a telenovela. The remainder of the one room building is filled with tables. You begin with the trifecta of salsas: one is almost Americanized (red, medium spicness, and typical) but the two others steal the show. The salsa verde, made from jalapeño, cilantro and avocado, is full flavored and packs a punch. I am not kidding when I say it is quite possibly one of the best salsas I have ever tasted, and I love salsas. The chips went well with it. As did my tacos. Speaking of tacos, I would have liked to see goat on the menu, but the chorizo taco and carnitas taco were both excellent. When I say taco I mean double wrapped tacos with diced onion and freshly cut cilantro on top. Nada mas. They were delicious. I will return and try every other taco. I likewise had a torta (because I love tortas), and it was excellent. I chose the torta del pastor. The bread was stellar. I would eat the torta here solely for the bread. Nicely done. They serve hibiscus iced tea to boot. I am going to start eating here every few weeks. Macon Road has some other dives that are calling my name, but pulling myself away from this place will be tough. A few nights ago, I was craving tacos, but my beloved Fuego Maya was closed for the night. Dejected, I headed down Macon, considering my options. That is, until I came across Taqueria Camino de Machoacan, a brightly lit beacon of deliciousness. The restaurant was almost empty, save for a few families chowing down on tortas and watching the TV that was playing a Spanish-language game show that had something to do with hatching a dinosaur egg. As soon as we sat down, our waitress brought a basket of chips and a trio of salsas - one mild, one spicy and green, and one super hot and sweet. The menu is extensive. There are basics (like tacos, enchiladas, tortas), but there are a bunch of unique, authentic dishes (like the seafood surprise soup). I got combination number seven: one pastor taco, one chicken enchilada and a cheese quesadilla with beans and rice. Combination number seven from Camino de Machoacan It was basic, but delicious. I liked the brown sauce on the enchilada - it wasn't hot, but the flavor complimented the chicken nicely. But the true highlight of Camino de Machoacan is the panaderia. Rather than being located next to a bakery, Camino de Machoacan has put one inside the restaurant. An entire wall is lined with bakery cases full of empanadas, breads, cookies, donuts and cakes. I got a few squat, triangular slices of cheesecake. It's not overly sweet - it tastes like it's been made with sour cream and cream cheese. The crust is thin, doughy perfection. read more

The best things about this place are the salsa verde and the beans and rice (in fact they have the best beans I have ever eaten!). I also adore the decor. The 3D paintings are my favorites. However, beyond that I wasn't impressed. The salsa is ok- I suggest mixing the chunky red one with the green one in order to get a good balance of flavor and spice. The horchata was ok, though a bit chalky. The tacos al pastor didn't have much flavor (and they're usually bursting with it in other places) and the tacos del chorizo were dry (which is just wrong). The quesadillas are plain (though the salsa verde makes them awesome), the chilaquiles are just not good, and neither are the huevos con chorizo. Also the bakery is over-priced and I wasn't impressed with the special bread they make with jalapenos and cheese. I will have to try elsewhere. Heads up for anyone wanting to drop by and grab a few pieces of bread: You need to spend $10 at least in order to use your card. Every experience we've had here is fantastic. The service is quick and friendly. The trio of salsas set the standard for what could and should be served as accompaniment to mexican food. The standout is the salsa verde which is made with jalapeno, cilantro, and avocado. It's a little creamy and pretty hot, but embodies freshness. The barbacoa and lengua are my favorites. The chicharrón are outstanding as well. If you're not sure what it is, ask for a sample. This is the best authentic Mexican we've found in Memphis. Don't come here looking for crunchy tacos with cheese, come here for great, authentic food. OH - you can bring your own bottle. We usually bring beer in a little cooler. Pretty baller. The panaderia is awesome as well. Keep in mind that Mexican pastry is not as sweet as American pastry. If you see something that looks like a little slice of cheese cake, GET IT. read more

You might think it would be hard to find authentic, tasty, reasonably priced Mexican food this far north of the border, but that's not the case in Memphis. We have plenty of options to choose from, one of my favorite being Taqueria Caminos de Michoacan. This small eatery in East Memphis also boasts a panaderia or bakery, which appeals to my sweet tooth. We arrived at around 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening, and fresh items were constantly being brought out of the kitchen and loaded into bakery cases. Taqueria Camino de Michoacan starts every table out with chips and three kinds of salsa. I love the variety. They have a standard version, a smoky one with chipotles and a green one that features tomatillos and jalapenos. Tacos here are served with cilantro, onion and radish - no piles of cheese and sour cream here (Did I mention authentic ?) I love the tortas, which are Mexican style sandwiches. I got one filled with beef and avocado on fresh bread baked in house. Final Impressions: Service was attentive, but unobtrusive and the food was really tasty. We rounded out our meal with a couple of Mexican Cokes and some goodies from the pastry case, and we didn't even hit $25. I'll be visiting Taqueria Camino de Michoacan on a regular basis. read more

I never knew that this place was near where I lived, but when I found out that it was, I was so happy after trying them for the first time! I ordered their Chicken Taco dinner, and my wife ordered two Spicy Pork tacos. It was excellent! The tortillas are fresh, soft, and flavorful. They pack a lot of meat in the tacos, and it is very good, as well! The beans and rice were also tasty. This place can be hard to notice, but give it a shot! Oh, yeah... CHORIZO tacos: $1.89/each. im a huge chorizo fan, so i had to order these. they're pretty good! the thing i will say though is that its not as spicy as some of the other chorizo tacos in town, and its not as crumbly as some of the others either. but i thought it was seasoned well and very good! what really made both of these tacos great was the fact that the meat came out hot but the TACO TORTILLAS came out super super piping hot! i almost couldn't hold it up with my hands! it comes with a trio of salsas when they bring you out chips. it was good and interesting to try all of them, but my fav was definitely the red one. chips were just normal, nothing to write home about. super random thought: they brought out my water in this HUGE large cup with an orange slice! i definitely noticed that and i loved that it was in a huge cup aka i didnt need to keep asking for refills. so as you know, those are the only things i ordered, but i didnt have $10 worth. so I ended up buying 3 pan dulces (aka sweet breads; i know, i just saved u from a google translate haha) and a large horchata. Some of the best tacos, tortas, huaraches, and gorditas in town and a fully stocked panaderia (Mexican bakery) to boot. Very inexpensive, too. Took a chance on this sleeper of a restaurant for lunch today and absolutely loved the spicy green salsa (not tomatillo, but rather cilantro & jalapeno) as well as the wonderfully soft, fluffy bread that sets a new standard for Memphis area tortas. In fact, my torta was the best I've had in the state of Tenessee, bar none. Sorry Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana, I continue to confirm my previous review that your overpriced sandwiches are getting blown away by other places for half the price. Germantown people, PUH-LEASE quit patronizing that trendy, overpriced establishment and get the REAL DEAL at Taqueria Camino De Michoacan. Not only is the food exceptional...the restaurant is extremely clean, and the staff is super friendly and attentive. There is also no language barrier to overcome. I have been hearing so many people rave about this place. I thought it was going to be the best Mexican food experience of my life. I was incredibly underwhelmed. For starters, I had no idea till I went up to the register to pay, that your bill had to be at least 10$ if you were to be allowed to pay with a credit/debit card. I almost never carry cash. It would have been nice to know this from the beginning. So maybe they should put a sign at the door or on the tables. Good thing my friend had cash. The other thing I've heard so many people rave about is the alleged delicious salsas you get when you first sit down. Guess again. Very underwhelming. I've had much better salsas at other places. One was super spicy, one was tolerably hot, and the other had flavor but no spice. So unless you plan on mixing them together to get flavor and a kick of heat, you're going to be disappointed. Finally, my main problem. I'm a vegetarian, so finding something on the menu that I could actually eat wasn't easy at all. I ended up ordering a taco salad with no meat. I thought there's no way they can go wrong with a veggie taco salad. The description on the menu looked pretty good, like any standard taco salad you would order anywhere else. I ended up getting a giant tortilla bowl stuffed with nothing but shredded lettuce with bits of diced tomatoes. A tiny bit of cheese was sprinkled on top, and a little bit of sour cream was squeezed out in thin lines on top. Initially, I was super impressed cause it was huge. But then I kept digging in search of the other components of the taco salad, but there were none. I called the waitress over and pointed everything out. I told her it was basically a bowl of shredded lettuce (normally used for food garnish). There were no beans, rice, guacamole, other veggies, nothing! She took it and said she would be right back with the right order. She came back with a brand new bowl that looked exactly the same, except half an avocado was placed on top in 4 slices....I emptied out the contents of the bowl on the plate, and found that they added a super thin layer of bean paste and rice at the very bottom. I tasted it and was so disappointed. It wasn't fresh at all and had no flavor. It was gross. Tasted worse than cafeteria food. Oh and the tortilla bowl it came in had little fuzzies sticking out of it. I don't know if it was dust or something else. I left my order barely touched, and my friend and I paid and left. That bowl of lettuce which I did not eat cost me $5.47. I don't know if their baked goods are delicious (tons of people rave about those), and I don't know if other things on the menu with meat in them are totally worth coming here. To me, it was an incredibly disappointing experience and I will never come here again. Nor do I recommend this place to anyone else who is a vegetarian. read more

¡Viva la panadería! I have a MAJOR sweet tooth, so when I saw the wall of pan dulces (Mexican sweet bread), and the aroma of freshly baked sweets filled the air, I wanted to cry tears of joy. I'm a Latina from Southern California, where taquerías abound, so my standards for Mexican food are pretty high. This place is definitely authentic. The rice and beans were very good, very flavorful. The salsas are good and very spicy. No wimpy tomato pasty stuff here. I ordered the taco dinner plate, because I feel that tacos, rice and beans are the basics. If a restaurant gets those right, there's a good chance their other menu items are worth trying. That being said, the tacos were good, but not great. I tried chicken, al pastor, and chorizo. The tortillas were the best part, to be honest. They were very soft corn tortillas, which tasted freshly made. When I asked, I was told they were from a place called Brenda which must be somewhat local, judged by the freshness. The flavor of the chicken and the chorizo was good. The al pastor was very disappointing--for some reason it was burnt. I agree with the other review on here that the meat was a bit dry. However, I would try them again. The flavors were all on point and I know that family run businesses sometimes have off days. One especially has to accept this with taquerias, where quantity of meat prepared to customer traffic flow has a big impact on each experience. All in all, I was just happy to have some REAL Mexican food finally. This is my soul food. I ate waaaay too much, out of pure excitement. I bought pan dulces to take home, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So. Good. I bought a pineapple empanada, a cajete empanada (which is like a caramel/dulce de leche filling), a concha (the round one in the picture) and the croissant looking thingy. The cajete empanada was too rich for me but, all the others were really good. Just as good as ones I've had in both Santa Ana, California, and Tijuana, Mexico. Definitely worth a trip here! Not as great as when it was located in Raleigh -- back when they served beer and easily gave La Guadalupana a run for its money -- but still among the best, most authentic taquerias in town, and definitely worth a visit. The green salsa might be the best I've had, and they actually have guajillo sauce, which is kind of hard to find in town. Not as many fish or vegetarian options for burritos, sopes, etc. as Guad or Los Comales, but there are typical filete pescado dishes, shrimp/camarones, and I'm sure they'd do a veg burrito if you asked. read more

I have been here many times, whether it's for buying pan dulce to eat with my coffee or buying a birthday cake. The pan dulce is good and the prices are better than other panaderias around here. The cakes are also just as good, never dry or old. Only reason I am giving it 3 stars is because the food is just ok. None of the salsas are spicy enough and the sopes aren't that good. I love Mexican food, but for such a long time, options seemed limited to Taco Bell and On the border. Then, one day, when I was driving through this area form Millington to go to Brother Junipers (the best breakfast in Memphis), I realized that there were some Spanish signs for stores/businesses/etc bunched in he area. So, on a whim i decided to yelp mexican food nearby. Thats when I discovered this place! So, the next time I was in the area, I stopped by and immediately when I entered, I was excited for a couple of reasons. 1.) There were quite a few people in there and they were all hispanic. I am of the school of thought that says if you want authentic food of a culture, eat where the people who belong to that culture eat. 2.) I thought the bakery display was darling and it all looked delicious. Caramel empanadas= yum! I was not disappointed. Since then, I've been here several times over the last three years and I've introduced the place to my mom, my sister, and some of my friends. We all love it.
