I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas through Uber Eats, and honestly, they were not what I expected. The shrimp seemed undercooked, the bell peppers felt like they had just been cut and thrown in without being cooked, and the tortillas arrived cold, stiff, and falling apart. I've eaten here in the past and had a great experience, so I'm not sure if they were just having a bad day or if something went wrong with this order. So let me start by saying the staff was friendly! And my sister was extremely happy with everything she ordered. (A shrimp tostada and a fried avocado taco) The food was very "meh" to me. I got two street tacos -- one chicken, one steak. The chicken looked like it had no seasoning on it and was boiled or something. I don't know... it's just not what I was expecting. The tacos had a ton of meat in them and it was all pretty average. I thought the chips were really good but the salsa wasn't that flavorful either. They had Pepsi products so I got a Dr. Pepper to drink which was good the first time around. When I went to refill it something must've been wrong with the machine and the syrup shot out and the drink bubbled up and over the side of my cup super fast... and the drink tasted horrible. I had high hopes but mostly it was a bummer. Like I said though, I dined with my sister and she absolutely raved about her food and wants to come back. The steak was really bad, the shrimp was small and undercooked, and nothing was seasoned well, why did I pay 18 dollars for this! Move over BBQ, Memphis has Mexican food! We came here on a weekday during lunch while visiting Memphis. After eating bbq for a few days we needed something different. We walked in to find a line to the end of the door. Once we got to the front we ordered chicken nachos, asada burrito, chicken taco, shrimp taco and pastor taco. Luckily we were able to find a table but if it's crowded I believe that they also have seating upstairs. The chicken nachos were bursting with flavor, and might be my favorite item on the menu. They're layered with beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, carrots, cheese, cilantro, jalapeños and sour cream. The chicken was seasoned and grilled well and shredded to perfection. The chips were crunchy and didn't get soggy and held up to the task of piling up the toppings for the perfect bite. The asada burrito was nice and beefy (both in flavor and size). The egg inside was a nice surprise and shaped in a nice plant that accompanied the shape of the burrito instead of just scrambling it and throwing it inside. The pastor taco was really good. You could taste the spices and the tiny bits of fruit that they add in gives it a nice refreshing bite. The shrimp taco was also very good if you want seafood but if I would choose the other meats over the shrimp if I had to. Now let's talk about the sauce. They have both red and green sauce and while both are good - the green sauce is where it's at and has a kick that not may green sauces have. Coming from Southern California where arguably the best Mexican food is, this place can easily compete. Everything we ordered I could easily see myself ordering again and again. read more

I happened to be staying in the area for a few days and happened across Maciels the first day. In three days I've eaten here four times. But today my mind was blown...! I have never heard of Caldo Tlalpeno soup before, but it looked good when I saw others eating it and so I thought I'd give it a try. And, wow! So amazing. I really wanted to love this place. I'm in town for the weekend and it came highly recommended - Yelp reviews and guests/staff in my hotel. Their lobby was clean and perfect for lunch hour if you work in the area. The young lady that took my order was friendly and extremely helpful explaining the menu. I ordered their Camaron (shrimp) fried tacos and confirmed the toppings, due to my avocado allergy. Unfortunately, when I returned to my room all 3 tacos had avocado, so I wasn't able to eat them - keyword unfortunately because they were filled with shrimp! My food was also lukewarm and my walk back to the hotel was less than 5 minutes. That said, I did try the rice and beans and both were really flavorful, so I feel as though my order may have been a fluke. The reviews are spot one...not only is the place a great value but the food is also really really good. One my first occasion I went with the street tacos and one speciality taco...the chorizo was probably my favorite but the speciality tacos are pretty creative and also very filling. One my second occasion I went with the spicy chicken quesadilla (another great option), it comes with a small salad and rice and beans...not a bad choice at all and the rice and refried beans aren't bad either...I was provided about three types of hot sauce..each one packs a punch but also comes with a lot of flavor. This is a nice little spot to go to went downtown by Main Street. I really enjoyed their cuisines. I tried this time the fish tacos with churros. Now the fish tacos had plenty of great toppings but unfortunately they missed the mark with the seasoning on the fish itself. It was very bland, but the toppings were able to somewhat make up for the bland taste. It will be somewhat of a messy thing to eat because it's so many toppings with a not so large shell, but I love the in-house made fried taco shells and of course the rice and beans are always tasty. This place can get busy at times but usually it's not an extremely long wait. They serve Pepsi products and you get three different sauces when you eat in at the tables. The churros were pretty interesting. I first thought that my churros were undercooked, but I believe the churros are filled with some type of filling so I would try those again. please note that they do have a very small outdoor seating but if you are looking to eat inside there is a larger seating area upstairs and a very small seating area downstairs. This is the best food I have had in my 3 or 4 trips to Memphis! On a cold December day, the Caldo Tlalpeño is just spectacular -- loaded with tender chicken, along with some rice, avocado, tortilla strips, and sweet hot peppers. It was just perfect. I added a birria taco, topped that with a little avocado salsa and some red salsa and it was also great. The service was great, friendly and efficient. Do you ever eat something and wonder how is it this good that is what Maciels was. I ordered their fried potato taco, avocado taco, and bean taco. When it arrives I was mad. The potato taco was covered in cheese. Except upon closer inspection it was not actually cheese, no ....it was mashed potato. I was perplexed, I have never seen a mashed potato taco before,how could this possibly be good? But I soldiered on and took a bite. Friends, hear me when I say that I'm 39 years old and this was quite possibly the best bite of food I've ever taken. I can't correctly describe it, except to say it was a lot like KFC mashies in a taco, only 11 billion times better. Once my mind got over the flavor burst it processed the crunch of the freshly fried corn tortilla and wow!!!! The avocado taco was good. It had a red onion slaw and some mango sauce. At first the mango sauce was a sweet tasty addition that slowly turned into a murderous fire hot assault on my tongue. I prepares for the worse as I finished it, but strangely it was only that one bite that was hell fire in my mouth. After that the plain bean taco we not remarkable. Their fresh made house sauces were delicious. I would eat here many many more times. The staff was very friendly and accommodating or my vegan lifestyle. Their rice and beans were stellar. They had upstairs seating and every other table was blocked off for COVID. They had sanitizer ready and available. I am impressed to say the least.
