Well good golly Miss Molly 'cause she is back! Molly's was one of the first real Mexican food restaurants in the city filled with Latin style restaurants where the other guys foods resembled what you'd expect from TV dinners. It was great, everything was authentic - but then Molly retired and the new owners moved the location to the hip and popular Overton Square. The restaurant turned into a bar - strong drinks with just OK food. And that was fun, if only you didn't come here to eat. Reciently the restaurant has changed hands and the new owners have turned it back into a real Mexican eatery. Now the menu is awesome, and about half of it caters to vegetarian appetites. And not wheatgrass, and Tofu... this is real Mexican food. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of pork chicken and beef. There are very large menu. And now, everything you look at it is delicious. I have been coming here since they opened and just now realized, I wanna try everything on this new menu. We had the beef chili rellinos with mole and refried beans, which I don't know how they do it but the refried beans have no pork and taste like they're loaded with bacon. She opted for a a la cart selection of black bean soup, roasted poblano pepper and cheese tamale, mushroom, cheese and spinach enchilida served with guac and pico. And as soon as our server left with our order, we immediately felt like we should have ordered this or that instead until our food arrived. TBO. Everything was totally delicious. I guess it means we just have to come back more often and try everything else on the menu. My server was amazing even though we did not order alcohol... (I had the worst feeling that since this place was really a drinking establishment for so long that they really kind of expected to grab a Margarita). The bill came with an included 20% tip, which I would always do anyway but i'm still kind of eah about telling me how to tip... politics! I am always hesitant to go to venues that do not have a private lot. I ordered a Frozen OJ which tasted good. My friend wanted to go hear because they have a ton of vegan options. Whenever I return to Memphis - Molly's is always on my gotta go list. We made it Last night. Arriving about 7:15 things seemed a little off. There was no door greeter and patrons were backing up at the door. As quick as it happened it was resolved. We made to our table and decided food and drinks needed to be ordered together. It was a minute before we saw a server but when we did she was wonderful! Oddly enough her name was Molly. We cannot say enough about her professionalism, customer service and dedication to her job. We ordered Quesadillas, Queso and Guacamole. The food was tasty but not the quality I remember from years past. The restaurant does have a 20% forced gratuity on the checks. We sat at the bar and had wonderful service. The bartender had several regulars and knew all of their orders by heart. I loved that. She's a queen. We needed a quick spot to stop at before a show at Minglewood and we got in and out in 30 mins. We had a drink each, chips/salsa, and some street tacos. We enjoyed every sip and bite. This place is unique because it has a cozy feeling to it and unique flavors which many Mexican restaurants around here don't have. Honestly, Molly's is just okay. When I moved to Memphis many years ago, I lived right around the corner from Molly's and was excited that there would be a margarita spot nearby; however, I soon discovered it was just average - everything from the food to the drinks (and even the service). We were in from out of town and looking for plant based/vegan and carnivore food. We saw that they had options and we were excited. Eventhough the ordering menu differed from the menu on yelp we moved past that and placed an order. When I went in to pick up the order someone walked up from the back wiping their nose with their bare hands. I told him I was here to pick up an order and he directed me toward the bar. The bar area was dark and a little dank but I walked up and gave my name. He went in the back to check and came back with a bag. My gut told me to check the bag but I didn't listen. When we returned to the hotel the queso was missing. I called, as it had been a long night and I didn't want to go back out, he placed me on a hold and when he came back he said the kitchen said they thought it was supposed to go on the nacho taco salad. He offered to replace it or refund the price. I choose the refund. Problem was we NEVER found the queso on any of the 3 orders. The food was bland and had NO seasoning. It was greasy and grease pooled at the bottom of the box. The "salad" that accompanied the carnivore order was the same as the toppings for my tacos. Slop. Pure and simple slop. We were so disappointed as my father in law loved to come here 20 years ago (it's been around 38 years!) and he would order his steak "far-heat-taa's". Our waiter was nice, and attentive. They bring salsa and chips to your table, but the salsa was chunky and had no heat. The queso was way too thick. My husband liked his shrimp fajita, but they didn't have any fresh jalapeños in the kitchen. My vegetarian combo plate was just thrown together with overcooked food, no thoughtfulness or care. Went for lunch today with a group of friends. The restaurant itself was clean and had lovely decorations. There is outdoor seating that is newish I think. This was my first time eating there. There is parking on the street and in the back of the establishment. The service was okay. Not stellar. Our waitress was patient as there was a large party of 12-13 people. I called ahead yesterday to give them a heads up that there would be a large party. Unfortunately there was a miscommunication and the lunch staff was not informed of our reservation. Felt bad for her since she didn't know we were coming and they were short staffed. The chips and salsa were very good. I ate a bunch. I like tortilla chips a lot! I ordered a bowl of chicken tortilla soup. My chicken looked like can shredded chicken. It had a lot of oil in it and was quite spicy. I didn't like it as I only ate maybe a third. Kind of pricey at 8.00 and it was not very good. Guess I needed to order something else. Another friend ordered a salad. The lettuce was not fresh and it had too much guacamole for her. Mandatory 20% tip leaves waitresses surly and rude! Or is there a darker motive for the way people are treated??? The threat of arrest didn't materialize! I was insulted, disrespected, and humiliated on my last two trips to Molly's. This final visit was the worst, horrendous. I came in alone at about 4:45 pm., Tuesday, June 3, 2025. When I arrived, there were about 15 patrons total. I was shown to a table in the back room, next to the kitchen door. I asked for another option and was told the front room was closed, although three of its tables were occupied, and it was dinner time. I was shown to the empty room by the bar. I cheerfully sat down. Two-thirds of the way through my meal, at about 5 o'clock, my waitress asked if I planned to leave in the next 10 to 15 minutes. I said I hadn't thought about it. She continued, "It's just that people like..." and there she trailed off. I asked if she needed to settle my bill because she was leaving. "No," she said, "I'm just tired." I told her to bring my bill; she did but didn't take my payment. I sat waiting to pay while she talked to people who were trickling in to form a larger group. I finished my meal, and I continued to wait. She went to the back several times; I waited. Finally, I decided to find the manager to pay and to leave. I was shown to the manager who was tending a crowded bar and clearly too busy to talk. When I handed her the bill, she said she'd remove the tip, handed me a new bill but left before taking my payment. Then things began to escalate: my waitress arrived wanting to argue. I tried to get away from her while she raised her voice before the audience at the bar. She finally offered an apology which I accepted. The manager took my payment; I walked away. I left down the hall to the back door to my car. I again encountered my waitress, crying while another woman consoled her saying, "I can show you how to deal with people like her." The other woman didn't see me standing behind her. I asked, "What people are you referring to, who are 'people like me?'" She said "Leave or I'll call the police." I asked "Why, what have I done?" She replied, "You've upset a waitress; leave now or I'll call the police." "People like me?" Who are they? I'm polite, soft-spoken, have good hygiene, wear clean, conservative clothing, belong to a church, and leave a larger than 20% tip. I am a single woman, 76 years old with white hair, wrinkles, and I'm fat. I'm also disabled and disfigured by severely debilitating systemic arthritis, and I have a major tremor. Maybe seeing me makes people uncomfortable. Looking in the mirror surely makes me uncomfortable, but there's not much I can do about it. My first visit to Molly's was at her location in a converted gas station on Lamar Avenue, about 50 years ago. Their margaritas continue to be the best! read more

It's been a few years since I frequented one of my favorite local restaurants, Molly's, after moving out of state but this will be the last one. There are just too many good restaurants in Memphis to put up with luke warm Mexican food, lackluster service and.... A *MANDATORY* 20% tip added into *ALL* tickets now which was a surprise. The restaurant was half empty and it took over 5 minutes to be acknowledged, much less to be seated (should've left then). Still the wait staff was incredibly inattentive to my table of 2, and everyone around us, despite being seated right beside the kitchen doors. . I heard one waiter enter the kitchen telling everyone table 12 had been seated for over 10 minutes and no one had bothered to even get them drinks yet. I never saw my waitress after the order was taken, a runner delivered the food, and I finally had to flag down a different waiter to ask them to find my waiter to ask for one refill of my tea at the end of my meal. The food was served luke warm despite our convenient proximity to the kitchen. The kicker was the forced 20% gratuity for that circus. I am a good tipper traditionally. But being forced to give a 20% tip for non-existent service for a party of 2 in an uncrowded restaurant was ridiculous. Having the nerve to suggest on the ticket to consider adding more than 20% tip just made me laugh. For the record.... 15% is traditionally a "decent" service tip. 18% is good, 20% (or more, I frequently do more) is **exceptional* food and service. The gall to require 20% for that was the final straw. Sorry, Molly's. Not even our long history together will get me back again. So sad to see how far they've fallen. read more

My family and I have been coming to Molly's for at least 40 years, and I am so happy to see how much better everything seems to be going. The new (to me at least) patio, the parking lot repairs, and the overall decor refresh are just a few examples of the owner's dedication this Memphis culinary staple. I'm from Arizona so I am really picky about Mexican food. My husband and I did a quick drink date so we ordered chips and salsa and two jalapeño margaritas. The margaritas were really good, just enough sweetness and strength but also a good kick from the jalepenos. The ambiance was cute, typical Mexican casita look, the tables were kind of old, they could be upgraded. The service was good, but the server seemed flat lacking personality but we did get our items in a timely manner. Probably wouldn't come back, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary special. I wasn't very impressed with the menu either, seemed like regular Mexican food you can get anywhere, so we weren't inclined to order anything else. Zero stars. Not only was the food we were given disgusting it wasn't what the menu described. Ordered a bean and cheese roll up, it didn't have beans in it. Ordered a vegan burrito that was supposed to have vegan meat and guacamole, got a vegetarian burrito with carrots and mushrooms no guac. Talked to the manger and he was an absolute awful person. He Blamed the server when it wasn't the servers fault, but the kitchens fault for messing up the orders that didn't match the menu. The manger told the server who tried to make it right that "since we started eating it before realizing it was wrong he wouldn't take it off the bill". So the server who was super sweet took off his automatic 20% gratuity so we would have a good experience, when again it wasn't his fault at all. Taco Bell probably has a better option. read more

Nothing short of flavorful, authentic Mexican food. The salsa is delicious and everything on the menu was incredible. The mole sauce is super authentic and tasty. I have been a fan of Molly's for many years. I hadn't been in quite a while but after reviewing the online menu for vegan options , we headed that direction. It should have been a sign that the place was less than a third full. We realized that the menu did not match what was online. We inquired the vegan options and they said they were out. No worries, I can adapt and we ordered vegetarian. One of the servers was training and it's understandable that it took a minute to take down our order. It took quite a while before it was delivered to the table. I ordered the vegetarian fajitas with a side of black beans. The vegetables were oddly flavorless and the beans were just odd tasting. I realized that both were swimming in grease and it was just unappetizing. Wait staff never checked to see how we were doing,refill drinks and then added 20% gratuity. My husband related our dissatisfaction of the food to the staff that was doing the training and suggested she let management know. We never saw either of the wait staff again. I'm so sentimental about this place. Molly's has been a midtown staple as long as I can remember. It's not the most authentic Mexican food, but it does have the most authentically Memphis crowd of any Mexican restaurant in the city. The margaritas are great, pretty standard and consistent. On the menu are some specialties unique to this restaurant, including dishes with pecans and spices. My favorite food item on this menu is the beans. They have this *wonderful* addictive seasoning to them, and I know there's Worcestershire sauce in there somewhere, though no one reveals the secret of the beans!! The guacamole is also delicious, unpretentious. It does come with a sprinkle of cheese on top so if you are vegan make sure and ask for no cheese. Take out is available, if you call your order in on the phone and you have to pick it up. They do not use a delivery service. Restaurant parking is in the back, shared with the Blue Monkey, or on Madison in the front. Hours are being updated frequently, since servers are being hired after the pandemic. Incredibly slow service, lackluster ambiance, ok prices and food. My favorite thing here is the build your own potato and I only go back because of that. Otherwise there is no reason to return. Arriving here you are treated like an afterthought to even be greeted and seated. You can wait ten+ minutes or more to be given water or chips or meet your server. The food takes a really long time to come out, even when it's not that busy. Messes are left on the tables for a long time. I was served an entirely wrong item and then it was left on my bill. (It should get fixed, but why was it even on there to begin with?) My husband's dinner was served on a plate that had a strange ridge on the underside so that it tipped back and forth as he ate. And there's an automatic 20% tip added to the bill. I guess it makes sense because the service is so lacking they might not get 20% voluntarily. We really like to support local businesses, but this one treats you like it doesn't matter that you're there and manages to underwhelm at every opportunity. read more

I'm on a mission to find my favorite local Mexican restaurant -- one who has the best chips/salsa, tacos, and margaritas. I'd say Molly's La Casita was *just* a notch above "average" for me. The chips and salsa were really great - I felt the salsa had a unique flavor that I really enjoyed. I ordered the pork tacos and was a little surprised it came on soft flour tortillas rather than soft corn tortillas but it did not disappoint. The pork was very well-done, almost crispy, which I initially found a little off-putting but in the end the tacos were pretty great. I planned to order the "La Casita Margarita" on the rocks but at our waitresses insisting I got it 1/2 and 1/2 (half frozen, half on the rocks) as it is their claim to fame. She said it was actually stronger that way. It was really good! I wouldn't say most authentic or best tasting margarita - but I enjoyed it enough to order a second one! Overall, too soon to say if Molly's will end up being my favorite local Mexican restaurant... but I'm happy to have tried it. *side note* I did not visit the bathrooms but someone I dined with did and said they were not great. read more

Molly's has been a Memphis mainstay for decades, and for good reason. I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've eaten there. The chimichangas, black bean and spinach enchiladas, mole' sauce, and refried beans are all favorites of mine. The service is friendly and polite. The atmosphere is comfortable. My only gripe is that they have recently started including a minimum 18% tip in the bill (you can select a higher or custom amount). My server explained it was due to a number of customers leaving without tipping and servers receiving less than minimum wage. read more

There were two servers for the whole place, but ours was very nice but slammed and slow. Only one hostess and it took quite a while to get seated. As I now reflect on my experience with the young man, it was his dismissive, petulant and sanctimonious attitude toward me and my wife that infuriated me. This issue aside, I recommend you govern yourself accordingly and take steps to 1) serve a dish that appears to be somewhat appetizing and 2) coach your front-of-house employees to not be assholes. When I visited Molly's on July 6, 2023, it was the first time I had been there for Tex-Mex in a long time. I went to The University of Memphis years ago and lived in Memphis for a while as an adult. I was excited to return. However, on this recent visit, I entered from the back of the building and did not see the sign on the sidewalk at the front that said that a mandatory 20 percent service charge was included in the bill. Service was horrible. It was VERY slow, and our server did not really check on us to see what we needed. They were not that busy. The food was good--but not as good as I recall. When the server brought the card machine for the bill, he did not inform us about the 20 percent service charge. Out of courtesy, I left him $5, which I wouldn't have done had I known about the service charge. It was definitely not worth the price (almost $45 for an entrée and two drinks), and I will not be returning to Molly's until this policy changes. I recommend that you not go either. There are too many other choices nearby: Huey's or Memphis Pizza Café or any of the other Overton Square venues. read more

As a patrón for over 40 years and a personal friend of Molly I must say this establishment has had its hay day long ago. Over the last several years the management has vacillated and tried to reinvent itself from a Mexican restaurant into a profit center with little concern to their art of food preparation or authenticity. Very sorry for Memphians who once knew this establishment as a truly Mex - Tex - Mex venue with a family atmosphere. Maybe it came from the pressure to compete a restaurant heavy tourist area, maybe they just don't care but either way that the food and service at this very established location is just not what it ever was. We were there for Saturday lunch. We put in the order but the food came out slow. My order was not that good. I ordered Shrimp Fajitas. There was too much onions with small size shrimp. I didn't receive but maybe eight little shrimps. They have no flavor and a little over cooked. This was pretty bad when you considered. They cheated me on quality and portion. I felt that I was eating an Onion Fajitas. I hope you guys will take notice of this bad experience. I would not recommend this plate. We may not come back even though we were regulars.
