Amenities: -playground:The playground is nice and has enough space for your kids to run around and burn off energy! -General store: this is on the smaller side compared to other campgrounds that I've been to, but they do have your essentials. They sell firewood here and strongly encourage you to use their firewood. -bathhouse: they do have bath houses on the property. They were not in the greatest condition. They do function, but could use some updating. Tent sites -on the website there are different kinds of tent sites that you can purchase. Some have water, some have , etc. -When we checked in to our tent site, we were told the tent options our first come first serve. I didn't really like this because that means there is a chance you're not getting what you paid for and somebody else could get the water and electric when they didn't pay for it so that part wasn't great. -the layout of the tent sites was a little confusing. There were not clear to find spaces for your camp area. -Some of the camp spaces were not labeled so it was hard to understand what your site number was. -the scenery around the area where we camped at was stunning. We are located right by the water and had really nice site lines to see the fall foliage. It was very pretty. Overall, we had a good time bringing in Halloween at this campground. I think there are a couple of things that just need to be updated like the bathhouses and the picnic tables at a lot of their sites were rundown and not in good condition.

We got to rent the smaller boat this time and cruise up and down the Chickahominy River. The owners could not be nicer, they even let my partner borrow their kids fishing pole for the day! The home itself is perfect for 2-4 people. Everything you need, plus a fantastic view of the river from your porch and firepit. At low tide you can even bring lawn chairs down the stairs to the river and use the makeshift beach to relax.

Speaking of the bathhouse, it was not disgusting but could definitely use a good scrubbing. It smelled awful the first night but not the rest of our trip. The water in the showers was hot and perfectly adjustable! Both the men's and women's sides have 3 stalls and 3 showers with a common changing area. The office closed at 5 every day, and the staff members there didn't seem enthused about answering my questions when I went in. The store is very sparsely stocked. No hygiene items; just fishing supplies, ice cream & drinks, and a couple of power adapters and the like. The pool was great!

We were on the first floor with a renovated room with 2 of the most comfortable queen sized beds and pillows I have ever slept on. I even took a nap I was so happy with those mattresses. The beds are a bit high so if you are short or have trouble walking you may have difficulty getting in and out of the bed. It was not a problem for me. The rooms are complete with all the basics sans TV or fridge. There is no room/maid services offered. The adjacent meeting room is small. We had 18 people crammed into this room for the weekend. The kitchenette is extremely small with a dorm sized fridge. This would not be a problem if the rooms had even a tiny fridge. They provide bags of ice for $5 which one of the employees brings from the kitchen. The air conditioner blows very cold air intermittently. I just kept a sweater I took off and put on. They offer meals options and Kai, a young chef, is very talented at cooking food for a group. The pot roast and mashed potatoes and gravy was fabulous. All the meals were well prepared and buffet style. I was not shy about helping myself and there was plenty for everyone. The grounds are very natural and easy to walk. The road to the retreat center is easily navigated but some distance from any kind of restaurants and there is no delivery service from the closest restaurants. I brought my own drinks and snacks but some people didn't and spent too much time trying to get pizza delivery. The staff I interacted with peripherally seemed very kind and helpful. The environment was clean well maintained. It is a Christian retreat center but was comfortable whatever your spiritual orientation.

Still, as it's Mother's Day there was quite the crowd for the start of the season. This beach is right past the bridge so there is a bit of a current but as it's usually calm it's safe for all ages. It's a local gem. Who needs to go all the way down to VA beach when we have this? No sharks!

Since our scout leader actually made the reservations and put everything together, all we had to do was pay for each family member, fill out health forms, and have our temperature taken at the check-in tent at the entrance (COVID guidelines). When we got to our camp area (12), we were able to drive our car to the camp area, drop off our camping things, and park in the parking lot. The camping area was great. Leaves were everywhere, but we had a rake to clear our area for pitching the tent. We actually had an outlet for electricity which was a blessing! We used it to fill our airbed! We were next to the latrine and a long sink with running water and lots of soap! There was a firepit available. During the weekend, we were able to hike to the shore of James River and collect lots of shells. We walked to the obstacle course and ball pit. There was a Trading Post mini store where they sell essentials we might have forgotten. They also had a dining hall for what I believe was for their campers in the summer. This place is awesome! I would definitely recommend families to come here!!

I was hopeful that the nostalgic…read morelook of the camp would lead to an experience similar to my childhood but this is the most disorganized mess I've ever had the pleasure of participating in, although the condition of their tents brought back memories because they are likely from the same time period and salvaged with duct tape. I don't see the point in having an agenda as it has been shortened multiple times already and it's the first afternoon. 95 degrees out and the only thing these kids really want to do is swim and play in the lake. Check in at 9am and swim checks til 11am (oh wait, that's right, they postponed that until late in the afternoon when storms were called for. That makes a lot of sense right? So now here we are and instead of being able to cool off, my child is playing with blocks. Events were scheduled through 5pm on Sunday but now I've heard that after lunch (12 noon) your essentially on your own and free to leave. So we start late, miss out on the events we actually wanted to do, and end early...next time I'll save the money and the headaches.

We rented a pontoon boat yesterday for 4 hours. The lake was beautiful and boat was a good size,…read morebut they didn't provide a ladder for us to get back on the boat... When we called from the boat asking if we could get a ladder, their response was "we don't have ladders anymore, people kept breaking them". We are all adults and getting back onto the boat from the water was a big struggle. The staff could not have cared less. We will definitely not come back to this location again; rent a boat elsewhere. The least they could do was pretend to care about our safety concerns regarding getting back on the boat. We got back to the dock and neither employee even responded to our concerns. Eeeek. Go somewhere else!

The ride selection is fantastic almost all of them are world-class. My personal favorite is…read morePantheon, although, objectively, Verbolten is probably the best ride in the park. However, the rides are really the only thing I have to say that's positive. Ride operations were poor at best. They take a long time to load and unload, with the only exceptions being Griffon and InvadR. The worst offender was Tempesto. In fact, the entire Festa Italia area had pretty poor operations, which is unfortunate since it has some of the best rides in the park. Tempesto is a very short ride, and in the time it took them just to load one train, it could have completed about eight cycles. I also found that Apollo's Chariot and Pantheon were pretty restrictive for larger riders. I'm not that big of a guy, and they had to squeeze me into both of them. (Also, there's a ride operator at Apollo's Chariot who will, without warning, shove the restraint into your thighs and is apparently not afraid to risk permanent damage to your future lineage.) I can't imagine having to push a wheelchair around this park. There are extremely steep hills everywhere. So if you're planning to visit and have a mobility disability, all I've got to say is: good luck. The food was kind of mid, with one exception: the pizza pretzel. That was actually pretty good. To sum it all up, if you only care about rides, this park is a great option. However, when it comes to literally everything else, it's pretty weak.
