The first few days of the rental went well. The Nissan Xterra was in decent condition (although…read morethere were a few things that caused some inconvenience, but that's not really the point here), and the owner was pretty polite. However, toward the end of our stay on Maui, I'm not exactly sure where it happened - whether it was at a campsite, on one of the hiking trails, or at one of the beaches we visited - but someone cut the rubber fuel filler hose that connects the fuel filler neck to the gas tank. We discovered this issue on the last day of our trip, shortly before returning the vehicle, when we stopped at a gas station to refuel. Fuel was leaking and spilling outside instead of going into the tank. To find out what was causing it, I looked underneath the vehicle and found that the hose had been cut. The cut was clean and straight, clearly made with a sharp object. Replacing this hose is neither difficult nor expensive and I can easily to repair it, but since we had to leave for the airport, I didn't have time to repair it myself. When I returned the vehicle to the owner's parking lot, I informed her that fuel had been leaking while I was trying to fill up the tank. I didn't mention that the hose had been cut, but simply told her that fuel was leaking instead of entering the tank. She told me not to worry and said they would inspect the vehicle and determine the cause. A few hours later, she texted me and claimed that they had inspected the vehicle and found that the fuel tank itself (!) had been punctured. I then sent her the photo I had taken, which clearly showed that the hose had been cut. At that point, she suddenly changed her story and admitted that the issue was actually the hose. That immediately seemed suspicious and misleading. Then she told me she would ask a friend who works as a mechanic for a repair estimate and would let me know the cost. She assured me that the repair should not be expensive. Shortly after that, she sent me a repair quote that was about 3 times higher than the real market price for this type of repair work. Because of that, I requested supporting documentation in the form of an invoice from the repair shop. After I requested the invoice, the owner disappeared for two days, despite previously responding almost immediately to every message. Two days later, she sent me a fabricated "invoice" created in a PDF editor. The document included additional charges for repairs and diagnostics that had never been mentioned before. It also lacked any signatures, stamps, or other indications that it was an authentic repair shop invoice. But the most interesting part is that the total amount on the "invoice" didn't match the price she had quoted me in our messages two days earlier - it was even higher. After consulting with an attorney acquaintance, I requested receipts or bank records showing that she had actually paid the amount listed on the invoice. After that request, she suddenly stopped responding for more than one week. When she eventually reappeared, she completely ignored my request for proof of payment and instead continued demanding payment based on the same fake invoice. I never refused to pay for the damage, however, when I realized that I was being misled and pressured into paying an unjustified amount of money, the matter became a question of principle for me, so from now on, the repair bill issue is going to be handled strictly through court. I've already filed a complaint with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, and I'm also thinking about contacting the Maui Police Department to file a report for suspected fraud. I wouldn't recommend this company, especially since there are better rental options on Maui for the same price or just a bit more.

This made my time on Maui absolutely unforgettable. From the minute we were picked up at the…read moreairport to the minute we were dropped off, I was happy, comfortable, and excited about van life. We got the light blue van with automatic transmission (road to Hana with a manual trans-no thanks!) and Noelle went through the van's features thoroughly before giving us a map of the island and circling all the camping spots available to us and our van baby. After giving us our camping chairs and wishing us a great time, we were off! We drove the road to Hana with no issues, camped in the rain, camped in the wind, by the beach, under streetlights and in the middle of nowhere. This van trip was so much more than accommodations and transportation; it was a literal and figurative vehicle for the kind of life I want to live. Staying in a hotel on a tropical island is nice; you can sleep in AC, lounge by the pool. shower and change in privacy, eat 5 star food and never ever feel out of your element. Staying in a camper van is awesome; you can sleep under the stars next to the ocean, lounge on a remote beach and then nap there, cook inventive, delicious meals with your camping partner, enjoy their company, and be bored enough to do things you wouldn't normally do (talk story for hours, play cards, snuggle up and watch the sun set for an afternoon). It was pretty incredible to actually spend multiple days worth of quality time with my husband, not just occupy the same space while looking at separate screens. You meet so many people who love "your" van, who want to tell you all about the van they used to have, and who embody the elusive aloha spirit that makes human interaction worthwhile and meaningful. We made several friends who dined with us on my glamorous one burner concoctions, or who entertained us with their stories from so many various walks of life over beers shared in camp chairs around the van's "living room". The van isn't perfect- it's 30 years old, and obviously is not a rolling Hilton. If you're creative, adventurous, and willing to see the bright side of any situation, you will LOVE Aloha Campers. Sure, we had to pull over a few times so Bluebell could cool down, and the E-brake light stayed on the entire trip. The back door flew open once in transit, and one morning I woke up with wet toes after some heavy sideways rain. The fridge never worked, and the cooler only kept our beer cold for three days. But those experiences just didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We lived in a VW van, courtesy of Aloha Campers, on freaking Maui. Plain and simple. We cannot wait until we have a van of our own, and it was all because of this trip. MAHALO NUI LOA!!!!

The "are you chill" questions on registration are relevant, and pleasantly reciprocal. In detail... As is made super clear up front, we were renting a vintage Westy for some camping around Maui. Warts and all. If folks aren't reading the bold print while making their reservation, then they are in a world of grumpy disappointment. After a somewhat last moment pickup reservation on our part, we were met by a nice lady who drove the three of us to Aloha Outdoors in Kihei. She not only checked us out on the van, but also ensured we were set with camping paraphernalia (chairs, etc), gave us a solid understanding of island options available and not available to us. We had already booked ourselves at Waianapanapa and Camp Olowalu, but were thankful for the miscellaneous detail. Our Westy was on the worn side of their fleet. The ice box was out of order, we were using the backup range by the first morning, little blemishes here and there, missing little bits like the front chair tables, etc. After 172k miles it is expected. Nothing dramatic. Driving the Westy was a bit more than initially expected. I've been behind the wheel of '72 VW Bus and other '60-'70 model cars, but was initially shocked by the driving characteristics of our Westy. It took 30-60 minutes to get into the safe groovy of driving her. (And once I was back home, I was hitting the brakes on my modern car too hard!). TL;DR: break early, having driving experience with older cars is super beneficial. Regardless of driving stress, it was an amazing trip. We had the black sands beach of Waianapanapa to ourselves at times, we met lots of great people, amazing sights, waterfalls, shave ice, etc. "Do you live Aloha?" Yeah. And Aloha Outdoors does too. On my last full day I backed the Westy into a rock. A bunch of bondo popped off the rear passenger wheel well. *Crap*. Afterwards I called the hotline to explain myself. The gentlemen was not pleased and said someone needed to inspect it when the VW was returned the next day. The next day the intake crew was unpulsed, photographed the damage to the owner, and ... I never heard back. Aloha goes both ways, and I appreciate that with these folks. My son still talks about this trip. "Makapipi" is his favorite new word. WE still talk about this trip. Highly recommended, get a Westy while you can.

We opted for the airport pickup and late airport drop off and it was super easy. Adam met us at the airport, showed us the ropes and then we were off on our 6 day adventure. Tips: Rent the fridge - worth it. Stay in Haleakala National Park. We did and the went on shopping excursions in Hana (very close) for ice, etc. Your pass to this park lets you stay for 3 nights! And, you get access to the hike and 7 sacred pools. Waianapanapa State Park is very beautiful, but BOOK YOUR CAMPER SPACE WELL IN ADVANCE. There is no cell service and you have to show them your reservation. Either print it out before hand or you can take a screen shot of your reservation to show them. Past Makena Beach on the South side of the island is a little stop off and we stayed there overnight. Sunset city!! Camp Olowalu - this camp is a little pricey, but it has HOT SHOWERS and a very cool vibe. The camper location fills up quick and we were lucky to get a same-day reservation...try and book in advance. You can snorkel at their beach and its close to Lahaina. Make sure you stop off at Kahanu Garden - it is a magical spot. Stop at all the little fruit stand people place out in front of their houses - delish and local. Koki Beach is beautiful - be careful of the surf there and eat all the chicken and ribs you can. Get the macaroni/potato salad! All the Maui State Parks are a NO GO for Camping. You should also know that you can contact Vanlife Maui (and Adam) throughout your stay and they are super helpful. He did everything he could to make everyone feel comfortable, included, and safe despite the challenging conditions. His professionalism, patience, and positive attitude truly stood out, and he deserves every bit of a 5-star rating. We made sure he knew how much we appreciated his hard work. Cons: If you're expecting an experience similar to Waimea Falls--a beautiful, safe, and enjoyable way to explore nature--this tour is unfortunately nothing like that. The concierge at Hyatt appeared to have little understanding of what the trek actually involved. The entire route was muddy, slushy, and extremely slippery. People were constantly losing their footing on wet rocks, tree roots, fallen branches, and uneven terrain. In several places, a slip could have easily resulted in a serious injury. These hazardous conditions continued for virtually the entire hike. If Maui has experienced recent rainfall, I strongly recommend thinking twice before booking this excursion. The trail conditions can become genuinely dangerous, and in my opinion, the risk simply isn't worth it. I only wish someone had been honest with us before we spent the money and put our family in that situation. Please do your own research, check recent trail conditions, and don't assume that every guided excursion is appropriate simply because it's sold through a resort or has high ratings. I would gladly pay the same $250 per person (price we paid for a 5 hr tour - hotel pick up from Hyatt) for a well-maintained state-owned park with established safety measures and properly maintained trails. Unfortunately, this tour fell far short of those standards and simply wasn't the right experience for us.
