This was our first time camping and it was an absolute blast. Sean thought of everything we could need to camp and gave great local advice on how / what to check out the island. We're not resort people. When we travel, we want to do as many things as humanly possible in the time we have without having to budget because of lodging. Sean and Anna at Camp Maui X made Maui and all it had to offer happen for us even the day after the worst series of storms the island had seen in years. They had our vehicle fully stocked and ready to go as mud was being plowed out of their neighborhood. We'd never used a tent top rig before but after a practice run with Sean, we took off to the grocery store, stocked our cooler and had the time of our lives. ....In case you're wondering, we're not "young" people at 45 & 60, that can sleep anywhere, so I have to admit, I was a little worried about the comfort factor of sleeping on top of a car for 9 days. Truly, we had no need to worry. The tent floor is a super thick and comfortable, queen-sized, memory foam pad. It was a pretty sweet place to lie down every night! Having our sleeping quarters on top of our rental car meant we could pop up at night whenever we were done for the day and then skeedaddle in the morning for our early plans. Due to the destruction on the island from the storm, we were able to change our plans on the fly and stay on the south side of the island where the waters were calmer and clearer. We weren't nailed into a condo or hotel somewhere where the conditions were trashed. We had a few nights reserved at Camp Olowalu for our 9 days but went ahead and made that our base camp. They have hot showers and a view from the beach to die for right on top of a gorgeous snorkeling reef. Sean & Anna checked in with us through the week, letting us know they were there if we needed them and answering questions. We were so busy having the time of our lives that I think they thought we were "dead in a ditch" somewhere....whale watching in Lahaina, snorkeling spot after spot off the side of the road, SCUBA diving at Mala & airport, paddling an outrigger off Makena, doing a massage training in Makawau and kayaking to Molikini. Update: when you have to track down your deposit after an entire month, are told over and over again deposit is sent yet banks confirm no such pending deposit/return and you're only returned your money after reporting it to your bank, you're completely warranted in warning other prospective customers. This message from the owner just goes to show lack of professionalism. Good rigs, sub par service. Check to make sure your deposit was returned if you go thru this company. The bad: First and foremost, my main reason for a low review is the fact that I had to report them to my credit card company for fraud before they gave me my deposit back. The truck was returned undamaged and I was continually ran around about my deposit until a month later I finally reported them and got my money back. On top of that, they charged the deposit before we even picked up the vehicle and it was never pending, just full charged. Not common practice. And according to Facebook reviews, I'm not the only one who had to "remind" them to return the deposit to customers. One reviewer booked a rig,had to call the day before picking up to check reservation only to find out they didn't have a vehicle available, didn't let the customer who already paid know, and then conveniently forgot to refund their booking charge until called out. Highly unprofessional company from the start. Was promised a shuttle only to be told to Uber over once we arrived at the airport. Upon returning the vehicle we were made to wait, told to go to a private residence to meet them and drop the vehicle off instead of the business, and then we waited for 45 minutes for someone to show up only to finally be told we could just leave it and had to uber from that residence to the airport even tho, yet again, a shuttle is advertised, they ask your flight info and everything for apparently no reason. The good: Sean was extremely nice and knowledgeable and walked us thru how the tent camper set up and break down worked, and they really do go above and beyond to provide you with everything you could need. In that aspect this company is really great. The truck was nice, tent was comfy and we really did love the experience using it. He also provided a map as well as great recommendations for the island. All in all, we will not be recommending nor using this company ever again. It was really disappointing to have a company be so highly unprofessional and the fact that I had to bug them and bug them and then finally report them to my credit card before they finally sent my deposit back was completely ridiculous. Such a cool experience!! My only disappointment was that I can only give it 5 STARS. Sean was great. From the moment I booked it he helped me plan and map out an awesome trip. Answered all of my questions (and there were a lot of them) perfectly. He even picked us up and dropped us off at the airport (for a 7 am flight). The actual camping was cool. Drive all day. Park your car and set up in a few minutes. Set up was super easy too. The tent was comfy and it kept us dry during a massive storm that raged all night. You get to wake up steps away from some beautiful sights and beaches. The car we drove was sweet. Mitsubishi SUV. Was able to handle the crazy roads of Maui and was still roomy enough to provide plenty of space of all of our camping gear and luggage. All in all, such an amazing experience. If you like camping you will love this. Even if you don't like camping you will likely still love this for the experience of it. Probably the coolest way to explore Maui there is. read more

There are no words to describe how amazing our experience with Camp Maui-X was. We went on an excursion with Sean for our honeymoon and the service he provided was out of this world. He took us to all of the places we wanted to go, along with quite a few hidden gems that made our trip unforgettable. From the time he picked us up at the airport until he dropped us off, he was super accommodating and knowledgeable. Within an hour of checking into our hotel after camping, we regretted not spending our entire 8 days with Camp Maui-X. My husband and I love to travel and want to experience as many different places as we can, so we seldom revisit a vacation spot. Camp Maui-X helped to deliver one of the best vacations my girlfriend and I have ever had! Instead of forking out big $ to hole up in a hotel and bum around beaches for a week, we got to actually experience almost everything the island of Maui has to offer. With the help of our amazing guide (who made himself available at all hours) there was never a shortage of places to see or activities to try. From watching the surreal sunrise at the top of Haleakala to hiking through the dense bamboo forest along the road to Hana, they had us covered. On the few occasions we wanted to just relax on the beach or hit up some restaurants & touristy stuff, CMX was there to recommend different options - allowing us to pick whatever suited our mood. The truck we camped in was clean and well cared for. CMX has really gone out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. We were able to store food & liquor in a cooler saving us a small fortune compared to eating out (by the way - you MUST check out Mana Foods and/or Tamura's to stock up). The tent was able to be set up and broken down within minutes and was MUCH more comfortable than camping on the ground. Best of all, there wasn't a lot of driving back and forth to a resort, allowing for a continuous, seamless adventure! I'd strongly recommend Camp Maui-X to anyone looking for a unique experience that's sure to make your friends a little jealous and will create memories that will truly last a lifetime. read more

Sean gave our party of 6 an awesome, personalized tour on the road to Hana. He provided food, drink and a personalized touch that made this one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Maui. His knowledge of Maui, the history of the island and some amazing off the beaten path spots was very impressive. For 12 hours, he kept us completely entertained! Highly recommended. Get the automatic roof top tent Suv, just a push of a button and your tent is set in 30 seconds! We camped 2 nights in Waianapanappa and 3rd night in Kipahulu. Amazing experience. We rented a SUV from Camp Maui X for the first four nights of our nine night trip to Maui. It was by far the highlight of our trip (we stayed at the Grand Wailea after, and still preferred camping). Sean was great with a late pick up from the airport, providing key tips before and during the trip, and quickly getting us on our way. We spent two nights in high country and two nights at Kipahulu. Sean provided great tips on taking the Road to Hana counter-clockwise, and pointing out some key stops. Our trip would not have been the same without this experience. This was the best way to see all the of Maui at your own pace. High Country is not to be missed, and we loved the east side of the Island. Camp Maui X is the greatest way to explore the island! Sean is extremely informative, generous, and he is available 24/7 for any questions or concerns. We tried our best to not take advantage of that lol, but it's nice to know you have back up in case anything happens. With the SUV/ car rental Sean included seriously EVERYTHING we needed for camping. And when I say everything I mean everything. Ex: gas grill, pans, cutting board, knives, utensils, plates, chairs, water jug, towels, napkin, bug spray, sleeping bags, pillows, lanterns...and much more! The tent was extremely easy to set up and put away! It was surprisingly comfy, cozy with and warm no matter what the weather was and we camped on a really cold/windy night and slept like a baby! If it's windy, I would bring ear plugs because it could be pretty loud. Camp Maui X is such a great company with high quality equipment...we were VERY impressed! Plus, Sean is so nice enough to pick you up from the airport and drop you off. Plus, he had great suggestions on places to eat and they were all bomb diggity!!
