They guided us through buying the frost blankets needed to fend off the frost, and as a result saved our beautiful new peach tree (which we bought from these guys last year). The owner and his staff go out of the way to buy the most unusual items. If I need a birthday gift for someone, I come here. I purchased a hand blown glass bird feeder for a friend. The price was not outrageous, as I am cheap, and my girlfriend LOVED it. If you need birdseed, at 69 cents a pound, buying it loose, you can't beat this place either. Of course they have the usual items, but you can even haggle a little sometimes and get a REAL bargain. Last year I got a beautiful bush for 1/3 off, just by asking if they had ANY specials at the end of the year. The woman in the gardening department actually said, I could let this one go a little cheaper as long as I know it is going to a good home. She feels about her plants the way I do! And lastly, in the country, you have to deal with mice. It is a necessary evil of the joy of the mountains. I was directed to a device that kills the mice by one of the ladies inside. They're mice, so killing them is fine with me as long as I don't see their feces on my counter top and in my food anymore. She even knew what she was talking about with that. In one week, my mouse problem has been solved. I was able to catch one mouse a day, and now I live rodent free. Thanks AGWAY for knowing your stuff!!!!

I'm especially fortunate to have a family lake house only 30 minutes from this extraordinary gem, which quite frankly competes with--and exceeds--the finest restaurants anywhere. That said...OMGD! I had the best-prepared, freshest swordfish of my life last night--served with beautiful, garden-fresh garnishes. And yes...in Sullivan County - well away from the coast! We also sampled the tuna crudo and East Coast oysters. You'd swear they'd just been pulled from the water. Everything was that fresh and insanely good. The roasted poularde was perfectly cooked, juicy, beautifully seasoned, and locally sourced--from the same farm that supplies Thomas Keller's restaurants, Per Se and The French Laundry. I've dined at both, and Black Walnut wins! Dessert? The panna cotta is the finest I've ever had. My longtime favorite (until tonight) is in a three-generation family restaurant in Valeggio sul Mincio, Italy. ...And the pavlova here is well...indescribable--it will simply stop you in your tracks. Think this was a one-off lucky night? Think again! We dined here last month and last summer with somewhat different menus, and food, experience and service each sitting hit all the same highest bars! Camille's secret is she's personally in the kitchen cooking every night, with her sous-chef by her side. Her small open kitchen is in the same room serving only max 40 lucky guests. Try finding that degree of experience, passion and continuity in such an intimate setting. Compare that to our typical world of corporately owned franchises, rotating chefs, and far larger capacity restaurants with variable service. So...forget the Hamptons. We sat by the fire and had the most lovely cocktails all made up by their mixologist. We tried the minty Negroni, forest flame, alpine smoke, espresso martini and a few others . Dinner time ! I was only paid $2.5K of the $7K Karkula defrauded me of. John said he'd refund the rest if I took down the initial poor review.
