There are 15 campsites (FCFS) plus a small parking area for day use. CR 12 and FSR 706 are not paved, but any vehicle can travel the roads. The highlight of the campground is Lost Lake, a pristine alpine lake at 9600' elevation. The Beckwith Peaks are in the background. If you paddle across the lake (SUP or kayak - no motorized water craft) you get a stunning view of the Ruby Range. (No Ruby Range photos since I didn't bring my waterproof phone case this trip). The lake is dammed and is filled with snow runoff. Even in midJuly, the water was COLD. No chance in h e l l I was going to let myself fall off that SUP! But midJuly was prime time for the wild flowers. Lupine. Queen Anne's lace. Wild rose. Pentsemon. Sneeze weed. Cow parsnip. Fire weed. Absolutely stunning. I'm told the lake is stocked twice annually with rainbow trout. But I don't fish so can't verify. I did see lots of fishermen though.

This was my first stop when I arrived at Twin lakes, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a forest…read moreservice employee on site actively talking to visitors and answering questions they might have about the location. He was very friendly and polite and had a lot of information to share. From the parking area there are several paths that can be taking to either scale the small hill leading to a half dozen picnic tables and park grills, or that lead down to the shoreline. The grills seemed to be moderately maintained with a couple of them overflowing with charred debris, but the tables looked to be maintained fairly well. The best viewing spot was at the crest of the hill which let you see out over the entire lake and into the small valley leading to the adjoining lake. There is also a small boat ramp with its own parking area separate from the campground area that is obscured from view helping with the seclusion of the campground. The actual grounds in the non parking area are completely natural and unaltered being left up to natures choices, which is mostly covered in rocks and sparse patches of high mountain grasses. Also at the parking entrance is a small building with restrooms, that are mildly maintained and cleaned, although they were adequate for a camping environment. Overall, this is a nice little camping area with access to some incredible lake views, park grills, and fishing locations.

For only $17.00 per night ($8.50 if you have an interagency access pass), the campground has potable water, vaulted toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. There is a boat launch, and the one or two boats we've seen throughout our stays seem to have the pristine lake all to themselves. Our first overnight stay was a new moon, and the Milky Way and the sheer amount of stars was captivating -- and waking up that next morning and opening our tent to the sun rising over the lake and the mountains... well, it doesn't get much better than that. Make sure you grab whatever you'll need before you arrive. The nearest towns with services are Leadville, Buena Vista, or Aspen -- a minimum of 20 miles away. This campground is truly a hidden gem.

Yes, they do have a lot of signs about where your pet can and cannot go, I would say if you plan on having your dog run around this is not the place for you. But they have plenty of spots to go potty, and they're conveniently located across the street from a beautiful trail! Your dog will love walking on that, instead!! Roughly about 30 spots. ++ It's FREE! Always a plus when camping. ++ The campsites are actually REALLY spaced out. We couldn't even see another spot from ours! ++ There's access to several hikes and Mt. Princeton Hot Springs is right up the road. CONs: -- While there are a lot of trees, there's isn't much shade. -- Campsites near the creek were pretty rocky and small. Not the best for a large group. Brown's Creek is def an area that we'll keep in mind for future camping trips and hiking adventures! Love that camping life! **Pro Tip: If you're planning on heading up over a holiday weekend make sure you get there early. We went up the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend and the sites were already pretty picked over.

If you do enjoy hiking, there are several trails to choose from as well. One thing we really appreciated was that the park is pet-friendly. Dogs are allowed on all overlooks and on select trails, which are clearly marked, making it easy to plan your visit if you're traveling with a pet. The park has a visitor center, restrooms, and drinking water fountains, but they do not sell bottled water, so be sure to bring plenty with you--especially during the summer. Many of the trails are fairly short, but there is very little shade, so you'll be in direct sunlight for much of your visit. We visited shortly after a wildfire, so there were some burned trees and shrubs throughout the park. Even so, the scenery was still incredibly beautiful and well worth the trip. If you don't have an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass, admission is $30 per vehicle. Overall, this is a fantastic park with breathtaking views, whether you're stopping at the overlooks or spending the day hiking.

It's further out west in Colorado so it takes a bit of effort to find yourself here but you will be rewarded if you venture out west. First of all this part of Colorado is gorgeous and a bit less traveled so you'll have more space to yourself which is lovely. The canyon itself is incredible. It reminded me a lot of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone if you've ever seen that. We did several smaller hikes around the rim as we had little kids in tow. Be sure to hold onto those small hands as I was pretty nervous about them falling in since it's just a big ol' drop around the edges. All that being said, this is a great park and I'd love to return sometimes without kids or when the kids are older to do one of the bigger hikes.

Since we wanted to change less than the 10 days (about a week), they forced us to forfeit our deposit. we offered them a $20 cancellation fee like the other campgrounds that worked with us, but they refused. We are very disappointed in their lack of cooperation under the circumstances and will not be booking with them again.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. 2. We'd been concerned with the name of the place that it might be filled with political signs (there is a park in Creede that is filled with hateful signage and it was scary, frankly) But there was no evidence of anything political, and everyone we met was nice. 3. We only needed water and electric hookups. They have a few spots like this, which were cheaper and the woman I made the reservation with advised me to wait to come by a few days to save money. The spot was pretty darned flat and, though close to others, worked just fine 4. The spots are shady. Lots of trees. 5. We don't have a dog, but the place is dog-friendly, and people pick up after their dogs well. 6. The women's bathroom was pretty darned clean. One evening there was hair on the shower drain, but they clean in the morning, so no issue. Semi-Cons: 1. The men's bathroom apparently wasn't as well maintained as the women's while we were there. They have 3 shower stalls for the men and just 2 for the women. Two of the men's shower stalls had broken hooks, and one was completely missing a shower head. My husband made due, and I reported the issue to the desk, so hopefully this gets addressed with whoever maintains the men's side. 2. It was extremely muddy when we were there, so we had to watch where we stepped and drove. It would be good if they would replenish the gravel in those areas during conditions like this with monsoon rains. 3. We had two nights with a couple near us running their A/C all night which was annoying. Especially since it was cold outside, like around 40 degrees! They could just open a window? But there's no rule against this. Maybe the noise rule could be expanded on colder nights to cover A/C when not needed? 4. We think blackbirds or woodpeckers ran over our roof every morning and evening for periods, waking us up. No one seemed to know what this was about, and I don't expect them to do anything about it, it was just scary when it first happened and we didn't know what it was. Weird. That's never happened to us before. So, if you hear tiny running sounds while you camp, it might be these ornery birds! :-) 5. The wifi was spotty. I was able to get on a Zoom, but it was a little wonky and on our phones, it was out as much as it was on. Most RV places have this issue, but the other reviews led us to believe theirs was better. Also, not theirs to fix, but AT&T sucks in this area. Better if you have Verizon or T-Mobile from what the office told me. 6. They have a cowboy statue outside the office and they place a radio thingy on it that plays country music all day when the office is open. I used to work in country radio so it doesn't really bother me, but it might bother others, so recommend maybe not playing the radio and let the campers choose what they want to listen to? So, you see, not much in the way of cons. We would go back if they'll have us. Their intent is good.

They are very accommodating and helpful. People have commented about airport noise but it's only a few planes a day and not before 7am. All the sites are grass and trees. Our dog loves the lack of gravel that you usually see in most RV parks. They have a playground for kids and a petting zoo of miniature donkeys that will occasionally be out to socialize.
