I never do YELP reviews, but found this place thru YELP, so just seemed right to give back - What a great, wonderful place to take your pets - my cats will go here forever now - been to most of the East Bay vet clinics (Park Animal in Alameda, VCA, Montclair), and none has come close to these wonderful people - from the front door to the vet, all are really nice, competent, and caring - nothing fancy, just really superb work. A few years ago I adopted a cat from an animal shelter and was told he was young and healthy. Sadly he was much older and immediately began to manifest some serious health problems. Campus Veterinary helped me through the next two months, as my cat stopped eating, suffered nausea, and was eventually found to have a large growth in his abdomen. They even waived some costs when I explained I was a student and had not anticipated high vet bills when I adopted what I thought was a young and healthy animal. This financial assistance allowed me to keep him alive until the pain grew too much and he had to be put down. The staff treated me with great consideration and respect, walking me through the process and giving me time after to just sit with my pet and mourn. Even in a few short months I had become very attached. A few days later I received a condolences card from the clinic and then a call telling me that my 'paw prints' were ready. This was a set of prints they had taken of my cat's paws in clay and then fired and glazed. It was a nice memento of my pet and I was very touched. And then after THAT I received a letter from UC Davis Veterinary School saying that a donation towards animal research had been made by Campus Veterinary Clinic in the name of my cat! This clinic greatly impressed me with their compassion, service, and respect. They took as good care of me as they did my pet. read more

Love this place... Dr. Margo Reid is the new vet there and she is so amazing... She has integrity and is willing to take time with you to learn more about the reason your pet is in the office... she is knowledgable and her care for animals is obvious... I'd reccomend her to anyone for routine vet care and urgent matters. The front desk staff is warm and helpful. they are even open on saturday... an extra bonus is that they are down the street from the Ohlone Dog park... My dog broke a nail ther while playing rough and we were able to walk right over and be helped immediatley... Dr. Ried is there Wed-Saturday. read more

I have been taking my two Abysinnian cats to this clinic for almost ten years. (If you get purebred cats you will spend a fortune on vet care FYI...Oh how I wish I had known). For the first five years, they were seen by Dr. Margo Reid, then I moved away and they were seen by another local vet, who I found was not helpful, so I returned out of desperation to Campus Vet, even though it is an hour drive for me. My cats have been seen by Drs. Pierson and Lee. From the moment I call the clinic, I receive excellent customer service. The staff is well trained to get my pets in as soon as possible when it is an urgent issue. On a recent visit, Gina was so friendly and compassionate when I checked my cat in. Rosa and Stephanie were particularly helpful when my cat started getting sick in his carrier-they cleaned it up and put us in a room right away (because it happened to be free...they can't usually do this). Holly the vet tech reviewed the cost of treatment to make sure I understood. Dr. Pierson was cordial and knowledgeable. He opened my cat's mouth and showed me which rotten teeth will need to be pulled. And Dr. Lee listened to me explain my second cat's long history of irritable bowel disease with compassion. I felt she was interested in listening to my reflection and took note when she prescribed a protocol for my cat that fit his temperament and challenge. Once when I came in and there was a big dog barking and my cat was afraid, I asked if they could put us in a room or put my cat in the back and they were able to help out. That is my only challenge: my cats get very scared by dogs. Otherwise, I absolutely love this clinic and am so glad that Dr. Pierson and Dr. Lee are just as wonderful as Dr. Reid was. read more

On a positive note, I had to immediately find another vet clinic and was fortunate to find Oakland Vet Hospital on MacArthur. Nothing fancy but they are fantastic. The vet immediately told me that my dog did NOT have food allergies and has helped me pinpoint the problem. Their prices are extremely reasonable. The entire time I have been going to Campus Vet, they have never been able to figure out my dog's allergy issues and have consistently told me it's food allergies and just give her more and more medications. This was a very good change. read more

My male cat had crystals in his urine and was peeing blood. The most time and cost effective solution is to give a round of antibiotics. My cats had this once before, and that's what they did. But the after spending money for an office visit they tell me... oh we don't want to give antibiotics because they might get resistant. WTF?? It's a cat. Who cares if it gets resistant to antibiotics, though I seriously doubt a cat getting antibiotics 2-3 times in its life time is enough to worry about. So I paid 100 bucks, stressed my cat out with a useless visit, and got no service other than to be told to watch the cat and bring it back ( paying us for another office visit) if your cat gets worse. I know it's a big fad right now to limit antibiotic use, but this was just stupid. I found a new vet in Kensington. read more

Dr. Berger was a truly awesome vet, but since Dr. Yen took over Campus Vet has been completely different - in a BAD way. In my experience, Dr. Yen simply does not love animals. He is a businessman who can consistently be relied on to pressure you to come in, insist on many tests, and spend a lot of money - often unnecessarily - which we really found out the hard way when our beloved dog was in crisis and we were easy prey. We have always found Dr. Yen to be this way, and we always had a bad gut feeling about him, but now we know for sure: Campus Vet is NOT the place we would wish on anyone who loves their pet. The technicians, and other staff, I should add in fairness, are quite nice. UPDATE, TWO WEEKS LATER. Campus Vet saw this review and the "case manager" contacted me. She said all the right things about "letting me vent" and "wanting to keep us" but more importantly, next time we saw Dr. Yen he went out of his way to be friendly, and made a point of not charging for the office visit or the second part of a needed blood test. read more

My wife and I took our two cats to this vet for over a year. In general, the service was fine - the assisting staff was warm and our vet experiences were okay (Dr. Reed in particular, though we only saw her once, seemed excellent with cats). We were a bit annoyed about being hassled about non-necessary vaccines (we have indoor cats and they don't need as many vaccinations), but we were okay with the vet up until this past summer. At the beginning of July 2011, Dr. Yen performed a surgery to remove bladder stones from our cat. The surgery was unable to recover any stones - presumably they were passed naturally (i.e., Shadow peed them out). This was frustrating but understandable. Bladder stones seem to be tricky to confirm and dangerous to leave sitting around. However, we were incredibly disappointed - even angry - about the following: (1) We were NOT properly informed about the side effects of the surgery prior to the surgery OR after the surgery. Prior to the surgery, we were given the impression that it wouldn't be fun but that our cat could come home the day of the surgery. When I picked our cat up from surgery, however, I was then told that he may have - for a night or two - trouble with a leaky bladder and blood in his urine and that sometimes it is best to keep the cat overnight at an animal hospital. These are things that would have been useful to know BEFORE the surgery so that my wife and I could have been prepared. Worse, the descriptions we were given of the side effects were NOT accurate. A "leaky bladder" was actually "our cat helplessly urinating bloodily several times an hour to the point where he was too exhausted to even stand up and just urinated on himself." A "night or two" was actually a "week or more." An emergency vet we contacted confirmed that the effects we observed were not unusual, especially considering that our cat also had his bladder rinsed. Our cat and us were both miserable for over a week. This is something we were willing to do for our cat but we would REALLY have liked to anticipate it and prepare for it, not learn about it in the middle of a work week on our own. (2) The morning of the surgery there were indications that the bladder stones may no longer have been present. Our cat had been peeing well for a few days. Further, we assume that the vet did an ultrasound to double check for the bladder stones before performing a major surgery... right? If so, then when the results came back negative we would have preferred the vet consult us before the surgery began. We probably would have said "yes" anyways - we were pretty anxious about the stones - but we should have been kept up to date. Our overall feeling is that steps to ensure that the necessity of the surgery were skipped. (3) In general, Dr. Yen appears to be uncomfortable with cats and handles them awkwardly. We don't mean to unkind here - his concern for animals is definitely apparent, he is very professional, and he appears to be very kind. Yet his cat handling does not inspire confidence and, looking back, we feel like he may have rushed us into a non-necessary surgery. "Looking back" may be unfair, especially given the rough time we had with our cat's recovery, but... The impression remains. After considering the surgery and our previous experiences at the vet, my wife and I have decided to switch to a new vet. We believe we were pushed into an unnecessary (and expensive/painful) surgery and that we were pushed to get unnecessary (and expensive) vaccinations. We have lost confidence in the Campus veterinary clinic's ability to treat our pets effectively and to respect us as pet owners who pay for and care for our pets. read more

I needed a vet in the East Bay since I moved here from Seattle and had to leave behind my beloved Rainier Veterinary Clinic. From the minute I walked in I felt welcomed and that everyone there loved my dog and cared about her health and happiness. The vet sat on the ground with my nervous pup instead of forcing her up onto the metal exam table. She gave her treats and had her perform simple commands in order to boost her confidence. She even handed me a tissue and said she heard me sniffling, which told me that she pays attention to things! The prices are totally reasonable and I was pleased that Dr. Reid decided to go with the less intensive treatment first and see if that works before going to something more extreme. I am so happy to have found a vet here that I feel good about. read more

I don't recommend this vet if you have an older, sick pet. They are great for routine exams, etc. but take your older ailing pets elsewhere. read more

This place is just tops. I've unfortunately had to bring my cat here quite a few times in the past six months, and the entire staff has been fantastic. Dr. Reid is not, like so many vets out there, only in it to see how much money she can squeeze out of you. Love this place. They are down to earth and really love animals. Most importantly, they love my kitty and want her healthy.

Update: The cat vet saved my cats life and the Campus Vet Clinic really helped us through a difficult time when we discovered our cat had fluid in his lungs from an unknown source. They did everything they could to make sure he made it thorough and I can't thank them enough! They still call us to check up on our cat. It's amazing how they remember all the animals that come through their doors. read more

My pit bull sees Dr. Reid regularly. The staff is very friendly. Dr. Reid sits on the floor and crawls around with the dog and is generally personable and warm. They are also more affordable than the other two vets I have tried out in Berkeley. However, we went to visit her at the start of the summer & our dog was diagnosed with extreme flea allergies. We started giving her more expensive flea medication etc. We went back a few weeks ago because the symptoms weren't resolving, and she said it was *clear* that our dog's problem is food allergies and not fleas. This actually seems to have solved it, but I am frustrated about the original misdiagnosis. On the other hand...medicine is rarely perfect...I mean, my doctor often runs unnecessary tests or is wrong. Like when a doctor diagnosed me with allergies to the dog and I actually had bronchitis. :) read more

I've only had an introductory visit with my cat so far, but I have a very good feeling about it. I decided to change from my previous longtime vet because it was too far away, but I also felt it had become too "corporate" (it's part of a huge organization), and Campus Vet is small and personal and actually gives better service. Dr. Lee was very thorough and caring; she took time to learn my old senior cat's previous history and build on what had been done and seemed very knowledgeable and gave me further suggestions. Her assistant Stephanie was there for the whole visit and was wonderfully skilful and loving in her handling. I was told that when I bring my cat back for a lab test by a technician she will be seen right away instead of having to wait all alone until a tech is available. When I came in I was a little concerned at the small waiting room for both dogs and cats together, but the staff seem ready to take care of any problems, and I was seen very quickly. And everything was less expensive! read more

I love Dr. Reid! I took my dog there for the first time last week and was so pleased with how friendly and patient the whole staff was! My dog is super scared of vets, I'm talking tail between the legs, shaking the whole time. Most of the vets I've been to just hold him down to do the exam, ignoring his fear, but not Dr. Reid. She sat on the floor with him and gave him treats during the whole exam to assuage his anxiety. She was very friendly, understanding, patient, and I could tell she really cared about my dog. I've been to several other vets, and Dr. Reid by far had the best bedside manner. read more

I've fostered two kittens with Hopalong, Barney and Pebbles. Pebbles was suffering from diarrhea, so after speaking to Hopalong made an appointment with Campus Vet Clinic on the following Saturday. Saturday came, and let's just say that it didn't start off well for me. I left my phone at home, directed the cab to Oakland instead of Berkeley and left my iPad in said cab when I finally reached the Center - all my fault and no excuses, I should have been a lot more organized. Despite my ditziness, the staff (I'm so sorry I didn't ask for names) accommodated my lateness by booking me onto a later appointment that day, were very courteous with me and gentle with Pebbles and Barney when they examined Pebbles and gave Barney a rabies shot. They even helped me use the "Find my IPad" app as I was waiting and helped me get a cab back home with the two kittens. I now have medicine to treat Pebbles and I'm sure she will make a rapid recovery. read more

I went in a few months ago for my first visit and everyone was just great! Dr. Reid was warm and helpful, and her assistants were really great with my extremely unhappy kitten. Overall, the experience was quick, very pleasant, and NO surprises. They told me exactly what they were going to do for my kitten (and what they would charge), and did just that. Dr. Reid followed up with me today, and referred me to a place to get some herbal remedies before resorting to medication. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've had a very good experience with Dr. Parsley at the Campus Veterinary Clinic. My dog's teeth were in very bad shape and many of them had to be removed. I had gotten quote from another vet for an exorbitant amount of money and when I showed her the quote and explained my budget, she was extremely willing to approach the problem in a way that I could afford. I was able to get my dog the care she needed without breaking the bank, which I truly appreciated. She did a great job on my dog's teeth and my dog is healing very nicely. Dr. Parsley was everything you would want in a vet-- compassionate, understanding, and very capable. I plan on taking all of my animals to see her from now on. read more

I've been taking my cat to Dr. Reid, at Campus Vet, for 5 years. She is a competent vet, a little too brusque and fast for me, but has given me some much needed breaks on costly care, so I continued going. I decided recently that I needed a 'warmer', 'fuzzier', if you will, touch, so I decided to change vets. When I called the office to say I was changing, and asked them to send my cat's records on, the person, NOT someone who knows me and my cat, never even asked why I was leaving. Just said 'OK' ( I think I know who it was) Anyway, that doesn't feel very good to me. Many of the staff there know and love my cat; now they won't even know he's gone, or why they never see him. I'm really surprised by the way this happened. It feels very cold to me. read more

Having just moved to Berkeley, I went with the yelp reviews and chose Campus for my cat. After two visits, we are moving on to another vet. The first visit was for a sore on my cat's belly. My husband took our cat to this appointment and met with a vet that he liked better. She said watch it and it should heal. Ok. Sounds fair. When it hadn't healed a month later and another developed, back we went. This time we saw Dr. Yen. A veryyyyyy disappointing experience. He was cold and seemingly bored with us and our cat. He clearly hadn't read her file to know about her previous history and didn't seem interested in finding out. He decided it might be mites, but only checked one of her two skin sores before deciding it was an allergy. He put her on a special diet without setting up a follow up appointment or explaining how long the diet should last, how to reincorporate other food or what food we should buy going forward (I only discovered these were things I should know about from the internet). Oh, and he gave her steroids. As the steroids are winding down, still on the diet, the sores are back. My cat is a shy indoor only cat who hates the vet. I'm not going back to these guys for another misdiagnosis from a bored vet. Last note--in the month between the first and the second visit, according to Dr. Yen, my cat's tartar went from mild to full blown periodontal disease. Just a coincidence that the clinic's owner is the one who comes up with the expensive diagnosis? read more

Too frustrated to ever go back. Have taken my dog in 8 times now for the exact same issue, the itchies. And guess what? She is still itchy. Dr. Parsley is the nicest, but refused to test my dog for yeast, even thought I've asked at several visits. And guess what she was diagnosed with at her last visit with Dr. Reid? That's right, Yeast. Thanks so much Campus Vet for charging me hundreds of dollars, not listening to me and causing my dog months of unneeded discomfort. read more

Nice place - easy to access on the weekends & has some parking spots too. Staff is nice, competent, and professional. The doctor took his time examining my puppy & he was pretty good about going through the visit charges and options. He called me first thing Monday morning to let me know about the pup's test results too. It's a bit pricier than my last vet, but I can see where the extra money goes to. Both our cats go to Dr. Reid at Campus Vet - we have nothing bad to say, in fact our experiences have been excellent so far. Dr. Reid and the techs are GREAT with our cats. They take a genuine interest in their health and well-being, and have never prescribed unnecessary medication or tests. They seem to really love animals and show a lot of kindness to their patients. Our cats come home relatively un-traumatized and so do we. read more

I took my 1 1/2 year old cat here because he has been having some problems keeping food down. Dr. Reid said that it is probably because he eats too fast and takes in too much air when he eats. So instead of running potentially unnecessary and expensive test she sent us home with her card, and said to call if her slower feeding suggestions did not work (which they have so far!) Also, I used the Yelp deal so it was only $30 instead of $56! read more

I just wanted to write a long-overdue review update to say that Campus Vet continues to be the best there is. Our oldest cat passed away about a year ago now and I was really happy with the compassionate and thorough care that she received from both Dr. Yen and Dr. Reed as well as from all the techs and staff. Kim, Lisa, and S.J. are particularly awesome. I'm really glad that we have such good care for our cats and I always recommend them to friends. read more

Been in twice with my kittens and the office staff has been friendly and helpful. The prices are great and they're not trying to nickel and dime you and run unnecessary steps. Dr. Reid has been great and responded to emails, which I love, as I hate the back and forth waiting of phone calls. Happy to find a reasonable priced vet office in Berkeley! read more

I am giving one star because of the bad experience with Dr.Yen. I usually call for Dr Reid for my dog. She is super gentle and cost efficient. She would not push for any unnecessary treatments. I got Dr Yen for a couple of occasions because Dr. Reid was not available. I feel totally ripped off by what he charged on total cost. He pushes for unnecessary tests and expensive medications. You have to watch out and make your own judgement otherwise the cost will be outrageous. Go with Dr Reid, she is great that you can trust! read more

The doctors and assistants here are SO good at what they do, and so passionate about he animals they tend to. They take amazing care of my cats, are reasonably priced, are incredibly helpful, and make scheduling an appointment very easy. I've had pets my whole life and have visited many veterinary offices, and this one is tops. read more

This was a great vet for our dog. Our dog needed a tooth extraction and they took great care of him. The staff seems very helpful and very loving towards all their pet friends! We have since moved, but if ever we are back in the area, I would definitely bring my dog back to campus vet. read more

I had taken my dog, Mac, here for a slight emergency as he was feeling a little sick. They were able to get me in the next day with no problems. The front lobby was clean and the staff, super welcoming! Dr. Bourque was AMAZING! He gave me his undivided attention and explained every single step of the examination. He was extremely thorough and I felt confident with all the knowledge he was sharing. Mac is a happy little guy now and I'm so thankful to have taken him to Campus Vet. Clinic.
