What a great find! It was so much fun to tour that area, have the guide share some of the history on the Canal District, and sample some of the food found there. The guide was great (i think she is the owner), she tossed in just enough history to make it interesting without making me feel like I was in history class. Loved the great places to eat and in fact I have gone back and visited 3 of them again. I thought the variety of the places made me feel like a lot of thought went into where we went. The restaurant/coffee shop/bakery in that awesome old mill (loved the history of that place), the restaurant/deli with a great offering of meats and cheeses i might not have tried on my own (but i went back and bought some after) loved the knowledge of the owners of the deli talking about how to make sausage and where they bought certain cheeses, the cupcake place for a nice desert,and even the Vietnamese supermarket. I never would have gone to the supermarket myself but just like the deli, found some special item to go back and buy later. The tour ended at Table Talk Pie, a Worcester landmark that's been around forever, love those damn pies. While the tour took almost three hours to complete, it felt like only a 1/2 hour. What a great way to spend part of our Saturday. I went with a group of friends and had a ball. I would definitely recommend this and can't wait to go again. Despite it being a rainy, cool day, we had a great time on this food tour with our friends! It also included a highly interesting history lesson on the Worcester Canal District. In the 1800s, Worcester was the center of manufacturing of machinery, wire products and power looms, and this tour highlights the makers and shakers of that time period. Our tour guide, Lori, was amazing, and provided a pictorial history showing us the 'then' so we could compare it to "now." Many of the old industrial buildings now house some fantastic restaurants. We ate family-style with the other adventurous eaters who shared this tour with us, and great conversations with the others ensued, and became just another fun aspect of this experience. As a trained chef, my expectations are always very high when I dine out. We thought the 'tasting' portions would be small, but we got a bountiful amount of food at each location! We all left feeling quite gastronomically satisfied by the delicious culinary specialties of the restaurants we visited. Lori is a natural as a cultural historian as well as a great food tour guide. The Canal Food Tour was very organized, well-paced, informative, and deliciously filling! Within short walking distances between each venue, Lori took us to restaurants, bakeries, and cafes that represented some of the diverse offerings Worchester has. We also had the opportunity to talk with an owner, a chef, and a baker! Along the route Lori took time to discuss the area's past history and future goals that this city is aiming towards. We thoroughly enjoyed our first food tour that connected city history. Not only was the tour "walk for food", we felt it was "food for thought"!
