We were looking for a place to stay while in Fredericksburg and stumbled upon God's Country Cabins…read moreon Airbnb AND through the management company Gastehaus Schmidt. Since it was Easter weekend and we were booking only 3 days in advance, we ended up booking one of the cabins for our weekend getaway. We were definitely happy with our choice. It was a good 7 miles from Main Street Fredericksburg which wasn't too long of a drive from town. However, it was definitely off the beaten path. You'll wind through some country roads before you hit a gate with an access code for the 4 cabins. The grounds were well maintained and the four cabins formed a little community in the gated area. We stayed in "Mercy" which was one of the middle cabins - there was a designated parking spot for each cabin and wooden walkways leading up to the cabin. The cabins were made completely of wood, including the kitchen island and the bar stools made to look like wine barrels. The rocking chairs on the porch and the wine barrel table was a nice touch. The cabins all contain a little living area with a small love seat, a TV, and a small kitchen complete with an island, microwave, sink and refrigerator. It comes furnished with a set of plates and silverware - enough for 2 people. The owners left us cookies and a nice little welcome note, which was a nice touch. The cabin each contained a king size bed and a bathroom with a spacious standing shower. The beds were a little uncomfortable, as were the pillows, but the sheets were soft. There are ceiling fans in both rooms (living and bedroom) and a small A/C unit, which we set to 68 at night but wasn't very cold. The water was also warm but didn't get very hot. The cabins provided towels and shampoo, body wash and conditioner. Overall, it was a nice space for a romantic getaway for 2. There is a shared patio space in the middle with a tiny bbq grill, like the ones you see at a state park, and a round table set on top of a wooden patio to be used for lunch/dinner, etc. It is lit at night and the paths are also lined with motion sensored lights for visibility. It was quiet and you do not hear your neighbors at all, especially since this is an adult only facility. We enjoyed it and liked the country feel of the cabins a lot! From the looks of it, the cabins were brand new and from the guestbook, only 4 or 5 other couples stayed here before us. Clean, new, and private with everything we needed! We drove into town for wine tasting and breakfast, and drove another 45 mins to a little over an hour to Enchanted Rock State Park and Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City!

This was an amazing little jewel! The cabin was perfect, with everything you need for a weekend get…read moreaway. Comfortable bed, double reclining sofa and The fresh bake cookies were our favorites. Nice dark nights, sitting on the porch and was able see the stars. Turns out that it was super close to our Saturday Night event, which was a plus. Anyhow, we loved it and will definitely stay again.

That being said - we called 4 times on Tues 6/3 to cancel our reservations for 1 overnight 6/8-6/9 because our daughter got covid. Not only was it not canceled, but we were charged $395 for a 1 night stay (effectively paying for 2 nights but only getting 1). When I spoke to the owner, Amy, I told her that we had canceled last week and asked why our card was still charged. I was told that the cancellation policy is 10 days in advance. I informed her that we were not told that at the time of cancellation nor did we receive a cancellation email. Had we known about this policy, we would have given the reservation to my MIL, who was currently in the hill country. She stated that it is on the original bill as well as the cancellation email (we did not get any cancellation email). I asked her to foward me the cancellation email she sent. I am still waiting for that. Very disappointed in both the communication as well as this policy. Emergencies happen, so should compassion. $400 is a lot of money for 1 night. As charming as this place is, we will not be going back and will not recommend.

But, I fully enjoyed my unexpected stay here so I am letting it slide. We stayed in the Casa Verde Cabin that included a fenced in yard for my dogs = sweet! Our cabin had a nice sitting area with Direct TV and a small kitchenette w/ a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker and a beautiful patio to enjoy a warm cup of coffee on. I left with a bottle of Paws Pup Wash an all natural Flea, Tick and Mosquito repellent wash with 100% of the profits going straight to PAWS shelter and the Humane Society! This is my kind of place!! They also have a BEAUTIFUL POOL and offer Cooking and Yoga classes that I would LURVE to return for! But on our visit on a Sunday night, these rooms were nearly empty. My diet coke was flat and had no bubbles. I asked for a replacement with carbonation, but the replacement was no better. I'd been looking forward to having sauerbraten. It's one of my favorite German dishes but is hard to find. When I ordered it, I was astonished when the waiter said, "Can I steer you away from the sauerbraten? It's... inconsistent. It can be fatty with grizzle." He continued on, "One lady sent it back. I chopped it up and gave it to my dog - and the dog wouldn't eat it." Well, that ringing endorsement certainly didn't make for an appetizing start to dinner. I changed my order to roulade with red cabbage and a dinner salad. My wife had the jaegerschnitzel with spaetzle, red cabbage, and a dinner salad. The food itself was fine. The dark German bread was excellent. All of the food was good, though the red cabbage was too vinegary for my wife's liking. 3 stars for the food we had, 2 stars for the experience. Friedhelm's feels like a once-great German restaurant in decline.

The room was appointed in beautiful old world charm. It had a huge king size bed that sits high off the floor, an old hard wood cloths wardrobe and night stands on each side of the bed. It was also furnished with a couch that pulls out into a bed and also a coffee table. The bathroom was great , it has a huge jacuzzi soaking tub that easily accommodates 2 . I had to use the step stool provided for the bed to get into the tub. I am only 5'1 and the tub is so deep that it's hard to get into. Yes here is not much counter space in the bathroom to put toiletries but we made do. There is also a fridge , microwave and coffee maker in the room. The grounds are well kept and the pool area is so relaxing. In the outdoor lounge area there are comfy couches and a fire place. Breakfast baskets are provided every morning and were a great touch. It was an amazing weekend and we will definitely be back.

Thankfully, we found out that it's not quite as expensive as it looks, and we could afford to stay there, so we did! The room was wonderful and very comfortable. I love the stone wall! Only qualm I had was in regard to the shower/tub. The jacuzzi tub itself was amazing, but they put a "rainshower" head above it for showers. First of all, it was a regular showerhead pointed straight down, not a rainshower like those positioned that way should be. A sign asks you to utilize the shower curtain properly so there is no water damage... which is impossible even when using the curtain. It's just a very odd setup. There will be water damage just of how the whole thing was designed. Worst about it all, was how high the tub itself is- if you are in any way disabled (be it permanently or temporarily injured) or elderly, you are going to despise this tub/shower. I'm a 34-year old fit and active person, and I struggled getting in and out of this thing. It's awkward to start with but then add water and oh sh!t, you're going down for sure! We used the stairs for the bed and put them in the bathroom for this reason but it didn't help much. Other than that, everything else was spectacular. The staff was friendly and helpful. We took advantage of the fireplace which was SO cozy! Perfect for the chilly nights we had. They supply firewood and firestarters so it's very easy to make your own. During one of the days, it was warm enough to enjoy the pool too. Breakfast gets delivered in an adorable picnic basket and it's loaded! We expected the norm of simple breakfast options like mini boxes of cereal and muffins. Nope! Hard-boiled eggs, fruit galore, prosciutto, cheese, danishes/pastries, oatmeal, and yogurt. It was different every day and delicious every day. Treat yourself and stay here! You'll be glad you did. If you fear the wacky tub/shower, don't choose room 10. That's where we were but all the rooms are unique and others may have a better layout in the bathroom.

It's got all the modern amenities you'd want. Beautiful modern bathroom with walk-in shower (though the water pressure left a little to be desired). Comfortable sitting room. Cute kitchenette. King sized bed with perhaps the comfiest mattress and sheets I've ever slept in. There's a salt water hot tub outside as well. There's another rental property right next door in the old converted barn, but we still felt like we had a lot of privacy. And you're close to 290 so you get some highway noise (not from the inside of the cabin), but then again that also means you're just minutes from downtown Fredericksburg. There's satellite TV and Wi-Fi available for those who can't completely unplug. The rental owner left lots of nice touches like a complimentary bottle of wine and chocolates and snacks and a Keurig coffee maker. Just an FYI there's no range or hotplate in the kitchen, but there is a microwave and waffle maker along with plates and bowls and such. Price was spot on to what I'd expect from this level of accommodation and working with the owner was very easy. Would definitely return. Very happy to make this my 500th review!
