Since the internet never lies, I had to verify for myself. I wasn't disappointed! Are they the best? I'll have to continue my research to say definitively. The cookies are fantastic! I will definitely be recommending Sewell when the discussion of cookies comes up, which it frequently does during conversations with me. Service was quick and helpful when we asked about a cookie that we didn't understand. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about but all I wanted was a cookie so no problems there. This past weekend, I was maid of honor for a wedding on Saturday the 22nd…read more The bride ordered a $1000 wedding cake as well as gluten free, vegan cupcakes. First, months prior to the wedding, this bakery forgot about their cake tasting appointment, but we understand things happen and chose to move forward. On the 21st, on the day of wedding set up and the rehearsal dinner, the brides family went all the way up to Salem to pick up our order and had to wait an hour at the shop for them to finish the cupcakes. They were supposed to have dark forest green frosting, which was not what they produced for us but at that point we did not have time to have them remake them for us, as they weren't done on time in the first place. Now, for the main issue, this $1000, three tier wedding cake collapsed on itself by the time it was transported to the venue. It literally had a piece of cardboard or paper inside of the cake, was held together by short plastic drinking straws instead of wooden dowels, had dense frosting (not what we ordered), which is what contributed to it being ruined the day before the wedding. Apparently they did not write down that they wanted minimal frosting. Despite our efforts to fix it ourselves, it was unrepairable. We reached out to this bakery to explain all of this and request a refund, as the product was not what we had asked for, wasn't quality work, and the design was faulty and could not even survive being transported. They denied our request for a refund, even though we could not use this cake for the wedding day. We had to order a different one from another bakery which thankfully was able to deliver it to use and make us a beautiful cake, which saved the day. I will attach photos for reference. We are very disheartened by the customer service we received. They were very rude and said that we miscommunicated, and would not be refunding us. There was no miscommunication on our end, as we had detailed requests for what we wanted and inspiration photos for what we needed. This is absolutely not okay that this happened the day before a wedding, and on top of that, make no effort to rectify it with us by denying a refund and being disrespectful when we brought it to their attention. The bride and groom had already given them a chance and were understanding when they forgot their initial appointment. At this point, their conduct is unacceptable and should never happen to anyone else the night before their wedding day. Between forgetting appointments, not fully listening to instructions or writing things down, and then blaming us for their negligence, I have no choice but to leave this review.

One of the biggest issues I've noticed is the inconsistency in portion sizes. For example, cake slices are often cut noticeably different sizes from one visit to the next. When customers are paying around $8 per slice, there should be consistency so everyone receives the same value. Investing in a cake slicer or portioning guide could help solve this issue. I also recently ordered a 6-inch birthday cake for my daughter, and when I received it, it appeared to be barely 5 inches. To the owner's credit, they did reach out to me, acknowledged the issue, and provided a gift card to make things right, which I genuinely appreciated. Good customer service means a lot, and I want to recognize them for addressing my concern. Unfortunately, the replacement cake I ended up purchasing was disappointing. Nobody in my family was particularly happy with it, and the quality just wasn't what we've come to expect. Over the last year especially, it seems like the quality and freshness of the cakes have become inconsistent. Sometimes they're excellent, and other times they taste stale or simply aren't very good. Customer service can also be hit or miss. I've had some positive interactions, but there have also been times when the service felt less than welcoming. I am not writing this review to tear down a local business. In fact, I continue to support them because I know what they're capable of when they're at their best. However, consistency is important. Consistent cake sizes, consistent quality, and consistent customer service would go a long way toward improving the overall experience. We got in before the crowd (which quickly filled in after we sat down) and our food came out really quickly. I had the French toast meal (Aunt Kathy's) and the French toast was perfect. I asked for eggs over medium, which some places don't get right, and these were great. My cousin got the hotcakes and they were bigger than his head! He also got a blackberry vanilla Italian soda which he said was delicious. My brother killed the biscuit and gravy with chicken fried steak. We also took a cinnamon roll to go - I think it can feed a small village, it's so huge. Highly recommend this wonderful place to anyone looking for a hearty breakfast.
