I have been a loyal customer of this cake shop for the past three years, which is why I feel it's important to share some honest feedback. One of the biggest issues I've noticed is the inconsistency in portion sizes. For example, cake slices are often cut noticeably different sizes from one visit to the next. When customers are paying around $8 per slice, there should be consistency so everyone receives the same value. Investing in a cake slicer or portioning guide could help solve this issue. I also recently ordered a 6-inch birthday cake for my daughter, and when I received it, it appeared to be barely 5 inches. To the owner's credit, they did reach out to me, acknowledged the issue, and provided a gift card to make things right, which I genuinely appreciated. Good customer service means a lot, and I want to recognize them for addressing my concern. Unfortunately, the replacement cake I ended up purchasing was disappointing. Nobody in my family was particularly happy with it, and the quality just wasn't what we've come to expect. Over the last year especially, it seems like the quality and freshness of the cakes have become inconsistent. Sometimes they're excellent, and other times they taste stale or simply aren't very good. Customer service can also be hit or miss. I've had some positive interactions, but there have also been times when the service felt less than welcoming. I am not writing this review to tear down a local business. In fact, I continue to support them because I know what they're capable of when they're at their best. However, consistency is important. Consistent cake sizes, consistent quality, and consistent customer service would go a long way toward improving the overall experience. I hope this feedback is taken constructively because I'd love to see the shop return to the level of quality that made me a regular customer in the first place. read more

We were celebrating my father- in-law's birthday and when we asked him about choosing a dessert he immediately chose Konditorei. I was curious about the name of the place, so I looked up its history online. I learned that the bakery was founded by Gerry Frank and Barney Rogers, and that Konditorei (pronounced kone-de-tore-eye) is German for cake or pastry shop. The Konditorei first opened in 1982, originally offering gourmet cakes along with a small food menu. Over the years, the business has grown significantly. In addition to their cakes, cookies, cheesecakes, tortes, and pastries, they now offer a lunch menu from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This includes a quiche of the day, soup of the day, meat lasagna, as well as salads and sandwiches. While the location is now owned by others, it's clear they continue to carry on the tradition and spirit of the original bakery. All of the sweet items are displayed in large cases where you can browse and select exactly what you want. When we arrived, it wasn't very busy. A few tables were occupied, but we were able to walk right up to the counter to view the selection and place our order. We chose a variety of desserts, and everything was packaged neatly for us to take home. Later in the day, when we enjoyed our desserts together, we were all very impressed. Adorable place to get desserts i got a slice of lemon blueberry cheese cake, blueberry cheese cake, cookie dough cake, German chocolate bar and a toffee bar and white mocha coffee also a honey bunny latte. Oh my sugary cake-y cookie-y cheesecake-y goodness! So many wonderful things staring back at you from those refrigerated cases! I had so trouble making a decision! But I did decide after I had some lunch - a half turkey sandwich on sourdough bread and a cup of soup. Both were delicious and hit the spot, making it so much easier to choose some dessert. My decision? Lemon Raspberry Cheesecake, of course! Seriously though, I could have picked one of everything and been super happy, but I maintained decorum and went with just one piece of cheesecake. The dining room was spacious and clean. Even the restrooms were super clean! The staff were very accommodating to the large group of people I was with (some of whom had walkers), helping us with the logistics of sitting all together at one long table made up from several smaller tables. The Konditorei is truly a fixture in Salem and it's easy to see why. Now I need to go back and get another piece of cheesecake and some of those yummy-looking cookies. read more

We've been back to this place more than 10 times. And we've eaten lunch here and the food is amazing. It gets better and better. As an impromptu team bonding experience, on a free day after my employer's company wide meeting, a few of my colleagues and I went to Konditorei as one of my colleagues spoke highly of their cake (he and his wife loved their champage raspberry cake so much that they modeled their wedding cake flavor after this cake). All of my colleagues and I got multiple slices of different flavors. I got two flavors - champage raspberry and afterschool (yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting). I thought the afterschool flavor was a little too sweet for my liking, probably because of the milk chocolate frosting. Also, the yellow cake was dense. I loved the champagne raspberry cake - lighter, not as sweet as the afterschool cake. I loved that the flavors were more nuanced as well, but I don't remember tasting the champagne. The cakes also traveled well as most of us were flying home that day. I hope to go back to Salem to be able to come back to Konditorei so that I can try the other flavors. read more

During the COVID days - we ate a lot of cake. A lot. 3-4x per week. In that time I've spent plenty of time to give an honest review of the restaurant. Treats - all are good, not ok or decent - they are all good. They are consistent. I've also build familiarity with the team there - for the most part I'm a familiar face to the store. That doesn't change the level of service - they are helpful, efficient, and able to handle the rushes that occurred throughout the day and evening. It was easy to order my birthday cake and the employees are nice! The cake was decent. It was a little plain, the Marionberry filling could be a bit thicker and they could cut back on the cream between layers. I would happily try other cake slices from there again, but not a whole cake. read more

I was very surprised with Gerry Frank's Konditorei. It was large and spacious, with an open airy feeling of not being crowded. The place is clean, I mean really clean, like even the restrooms were immaculately clean. The main room floors are a soft vinyl type of square tile of the non-slip variety. Display cases are well lit and the treats, cakes and goodies are a real visual treat. There is an excellent variety of cakes and cheesecakes. Prices are very reasonable for slices and various brownies and biscuits. I've been to many bakeries and this one stands out in variety, menu, quality and service. There were three of us and there was about a 15 minute wait. Suddenly a staff member had different thoughts as she scooted some furniture around and made a place for the three of us with no waiting. It was also refreshing to walk into a bakery and see that they have enough products to where they didn't sell out in the first hour of the day. There was plenty! The seating area itself is very spacious with clean tables. There is plenty of room to navigate around the tables which makes it easier to go see the displays while you enjoy lunch. For lunch I had the Classic Clubhouse sandwich. It was a very large triple decker on wheat bread. It had bacon, ham, turkey, cheese, thick slice tomatoes, lettuce and mayo. It came with a pile of kettle chips. The flavors of the different meats and veggies is a fantastic blend of savory and salad. The ingredients were very fresh as well. I had a slice of the German Chocolate Cheesecake for dessert. It was very rich and dense. The strength of the chocolate was not overwhelming and the mixture of walnut, pecan and coconut was very pleasant and offered a light crunch to the cheesecake. I have only ever ordered dessert here but I'm sure the rest of the menu is good too. I don't live local but any time I come down to Salem or drive through on the way to anywhere else I always make time to stop in and purchase a couple pieces of cake. The service is helpful and efficient. It's easy to find parking (street parking or the lot behind the building) the atmosphere is kind of diner meets Italian restaurant but the cake is the real reason we're there. If you were rating Gerry Frank's on the food alone, they would be awarded four stars, as in: quite good, not amazing. But the cake. THE CAKE! Just gazing at those towers of butter and sugar makes my heart so happy! Cake by the slice is the best, and the cupcake craze of past years seems to have changed bakeries so it is difficult to find cake by the slice, but not so here! They also have cheesecake, tortes, and a variety of cookies, bars, brownies, etc. They offer day (or two) old slices at a discounted price of $3.95, and on our first visit they were so inundated with goodies that they had a BOGO offer, meaning we got four slices for (technically under) $2 piece. And they were fantastic! The only one that was a smidge dry was the After School, but I still munched it right up. Surprisingly, Champagne might have been my favorite. The white cake was so, so fine and light and just exactly what you want cake to be, and the frosting had such a lovely champagne flavor that really elevated it from a basic white cake. Gerry's chocolate was pretty darn great, though, while my husband favored the Snicker's Cheesecake. I enjoyed them so much I returned twice over the next few weeks and have since tried coconut, blackout, birthday, and the chocolate mousse cake. As a dedicated chocoholic I can't believe I'm saying this, but their white cakes with any kind of buttercream frosting are my favorite. If you are not nearly so inclined to gorge on sweets as I, the food really was quite good. For lunch, I had the curry chicken salad. It was yummy and large enough that I took some home. The hot chocolate was tasty too, with loads of whipped cream (and they make all sorts of coffee and related drinks as well). Prices are reasonable with plenty of options around $10, and none over $14. It's mostly sandwiches and salads, with a daily soup and quiche, as well as a lasagna option. Overall, I'd happily share a meal here again, but mostly, I'll be stopping by for a grab and go slice of cake (or 3!). read more

We've been here 2 more times since my last review! One to pick up more cakes to bring home, and 2nd, for take-out picnic in the Bush House. Our lunch-to-go, we both had the Quiche Crab Asparagus and Clam Chowder. It was the best take-out lunch we've had since the pandemic began. It was filling! I came in with a friend to celebrate my birthday. The resturant was so cold even when wearing my winter jacket. My friend was also cold. We asked if the heat could been turned up. After about 10 minutes it was clear to us that heat was not turned up at all. We left. A few months ago I order a piece of cheese cake to bring home. I KNEW it would be too tempting once I saw the gloriousness of being able to stare at two dozen or more ridiculously delicious-looking and artfully decorated cakes in the case before the big decision of what to order, and then finding out that the cakes taste as good as they look... Now every time I drive past there I will struggle not swerve into the little side street (plenty of parking in the street or behind the building) and rush in for a cake fix. So...went here this past week with a visiting friend. Marionberry layer cake and carrot cake were both excellent, fresh, soft, just the right ratio of icing to cake, and made us want to sample our way through the entire selection. Instead we showed a tiny amount of self-control and also each had a cup of Italian wedding soup, which hit the spot and let us pretend we weren't just there for the cake. Alright, yes, we WERE just there for the cake. As others have mentioned, the place is spotlessly clean and big enough inside that you have plenty of seating options to not be on top of fellow diners while enjoying your cake. Three tiers of perfect texture cake, filled with butter cream, fillings and freshness. I pulled up this establishment on yelp and the direction were right on. We luckily found parking right up front, but the free parking seemed limited out front.
