In addition we bought some cappuccino truffles for another night with a great bottle of red wine. Service was amazing. They gave us samples, we were lucky to be on a Wednesday during the fall season when it wasn't so busy, but it felt like somebody's mother's kitchen while we were there! The Candy Cottage is like taking a step back into my childhood. They have novelty candies that I haven't seen since I was little. What makes a stop into this quaint little store necessary is their homemade fudge. I lived in Michigan for some time and the U.P. Traverse City has some amazing fudge. THIS is even better! Smooth and creamy with an incredible variety of flavors, there is something for everyone. They also make caramel in-store. Top hats are their design of a marshmallow enrobed with fresh caramel, drizzled with white chocolate. So good! Oh, and ask for a sample for their caramel corn... I bet you'll buy a whole box for the drive home! The best part for me was the service. Everyone was smiling and friendl,y even though the line went out the door and down the sidewalk. Even the owner, Larry and his sweet, kind mom were smiling and took time out to talk with customers. This place is amazing and a true asset to the Old Forge business district. Cute little place but I feel the need to say (as a business owner myself) that you're only hurting yourself by limiting your hours. Water safari is open until 6:30, yet you close your doors at 6pm. Too many businesses in this area limit their hours and I don't think they realize this grossly effects revenue. You should be open until minimum 8pm. Many people would stop by upon leaving the park but cannot, as we have driven right on by many times with the intention of stopping in and purchasing some items. read more

What we experienced was sort of meh and not what we expected. The fudge was decent, but I got the sense that it wasn't made on site. This is somewhat of a tourist trap. The store is full of ADK souvenirs (t-shirts, mugs, stickers, keychains, etc). The freshly made donuts are good but when are warm donuts ever not?. The chocolates were probably good when they were fresh but the ones I got were stale (not acceptable at the price they charge). The fudge is better than the chocolate but still a little pricey. They claim to make everything from scratch. They do have a wide variety of sweets but I cannot imagine that they have the volume to turn over inventory fast enough to keep things tasting their best. I recommend sticking to their donuts (and anything else they make in small batches when you request it). read more

I have to say the Candy Cottage is a wonderful place to get a variety of items. When we went we got the dark chocolate orange creams and salted dark chocolate caramels. They were outstanding! When we got home we called the shop and spoke to Larry to see if they ship those chocolates. He said yes and was very accommodating! We ordered and it was shipped to our house in 3 days. 3.5 stars... This is a candy store along the main strip of shops in main street Old Forge. They have top notch treats like a dozen plus types of homemade fudge, caramel apples, marshmallows, and popcorn just to name a few. On the plus side you won't find a better tasting or higher quality treat then what they have here but on the down side is that most of everything here is somewhat pricey. You can request a taste of any of their delicious fudges but unfortunately the minimum is a 1/4 pound which you can't split between flavors so you really have to commit to a flavor or get a good amount of fudge. Although they do have jelly bellies they really don't have a huge selection of classic candies, their selections are more about selective gourmet chocolates and homemade items. The store does have a bit of an identity crisis though by also allocating a section of the shop to selling a few cheap souvenirs that you can get at any one of the two dozen other souvenir shops in the surrounding area. I think that the candy cottage should take 100% of their efforts (and real estate) to making the best and most welcoming candy store imaginable and not spread themselves too thin by being some sort of a one stop Adirondacks shop (Its not that big of a deal though) Their identity crisis, cash only policies, and higher than ideal prices take away one star but you can't make any complaints about any dessert they sell, they really do have great quality in everything they make. Update: The owner of the Candy Cottage has contacted me and wished for me to relay that they do now take credit cards and that they have been selling a small selection of souvenirs for about 14 years (years longer than many of the bigger souvenir power houses in the area) read more

This place is cuter on the outside than the inside. Once you get inside it's a lot of blue fluorescent lighting and wrapped candies. They do have fudge made on site, but you can get a much better chocolate selection at Souvenir Village. Overall I would say pass it unless you are enjoying walking around or have a thing for Fudge. Fun Fact: a couple of years ago a bear tried to break into the side of the shop. The bear tore away some siding, but they fixed it quickly. read more

They have a really great selection of lollypops as well as candy bars for the go. One cool thing about the candy cottage is they make their own homemade mini doughnuts which gives off an amazing smell all throughout the store. Old Forge has a top grade candy shop, second to none in the area! Candy Cottage has been in operation for many years, and the selection of treats is bountiful. I counted 22 varieties of fresh, homemade fudge the other day! Although chocolate is my favorite, the maple, penuche, & amaretto fudges are insanely delicious, too! Other area shops may have fudge, but certainly not the quality of Larry's, the friendly owner. I can't stay away! They have a delicious selection of chocolates, including bear claws and truffles. Other treats include malted milk balls, jelly bellies, licorice, fruit slices, & sugar free chocolates. The prices are comparable to other quality shops. Candy Cottage also has mini donuts, popcorn, nuts, & souvenirs. You can even order over the winter, when you're not in the area. The best part about this shop is their mini donuts. Something different and delicious. However, apparently they only operate the machine from 10-4. I was advised as such from the gentleman in the shop that I am assuming was the owner. After expressing I was bummed in a facetious manner as I was on vacation as I'm sure many people are, he proceeded to talk under his breath and storm off into the back. Which I found not only unprofessional but rude. I have visited the shop quite a few times as I have family that resides in the area of Old Forge, however I don't believe I will be stopping in again. I love this place. Best chocolate covered pretzels in the entire world. The caramel corn is wonderful. And the fudge is beyond decadent and it really is home made. They manage to find the friendliest people in the area to work here. Maybe all the sugar gets everyone in a such good mood. This is a fun place to pick up some extra calories.
