Absolutely horrible service towards my daughter, she came home after a night with her friends very sad, one of the workers in the shop told them they were being disrespectful and making a mess and to leave the store, but another parent was right outside watching them and they hadn't done anything, they simply bought a single slushie and looked around and were rudely kicked out, if your kids ask to go there, find another store, the worker was extremely rude and I hope she knows she should watch her manners. If I was her mother I would be very very disappointed in her actions. read more

I was really upset by how my friends and I were treated at this candy shop. We came in as part of a birthday outing after ice skating and dinner, excited to get a treat. From the moment we walked in, we were calm, respectful, and just looking around like any other customers. Right when we were about to buy something, the woman at the counter suddenly accused us of being disrespectful and making a mess, and told us we had to leave unless we came back with a parent. This made no sense. We were not running around, yelling, or touching things carelessly. The only thing that happened was one of my friends squeezed a small squishy toy a couple of times, and it was clearly not being damaged. There were no other customers in the store, and we were polite teenage girls who fully intended to spend money there. Being kicked out without a real explanation felt extremely unfair, especially during a friend's birthday. The way we were spoken to completely ruined the experience. Candy shops are supposed to be fun and welcoming, but the customer service here did the opposite. I would not recommend this place if you're looking for a positive or happy experience. read more

We bought a caramel apple and the clerk kindly cut it into pieces. When we finally picked up the piece with that the stick was in we found white mold around the core of the apple and the stick and surrounding areas touching it had turned black. Despite this I was told that I could not get a refund and the best that could be done was to give me a replacement caramel apple in hopes that this one would not have the same issues. Surprisingly, the clerk argued that "we make the apples at the beginning of each week and cut apples do go bad" and if that justified the issue. Honestly, as someone who worked in food service I should have known better and trusted my gut the moment I stepped in and saw that kind of item sitting in an uncooled glass case among the barrels of taffy. Well it's a candy store. Bright and colorful. Taffy galore, candy apples and then some. Unique candies and treats. Geez they'll put chocolate on anything, jalapeños, bacon! Caramel Apple were just ok. I'm a caramel apple snob. Also I purchased a sticker and she didn't put it in the bag on accident. read more

This place is ridiculously overpriced. They wanted to charge me $3.99 for a ring pop and $1 for one roll of smarties.

Cool little candy shop near the hotel before you get to the fisherman's warf. Has a whole bunch of candy and some novelty drinks like Habanero sodas. We got some sweets for the room later and a few bottles of water. Be cautious though a friend of mine got a small square of fudge and it was like $30 & if you start bagging candy there's no changing your mind that candy is yours, there are signs in the store that say it but I figured I'd spread the word. I can't say I know too much about salt water taffy. I don't remember ever having it. The lady at the store was nice and recommended the fruity flavors. I decided to fill up a whole regular size lunch bag ( which they provide) with different fruity flavors to share. The candy was pretty good. I can't really compare to another place since I'm not familiar. Wow salt water taffy isn't cheap. That bag was 30 bucks. This will be my tourist contribution :) read more

Good thing about yelp is that it makes everyone a critic. The good thing is everyone can make a opinion and the bad thing is most of the customer read yelp to decide where to go. The place is located around hotels. 2) Decoration : (2 Point) - Not much of decoration. Just lots of well organized candy display and storage. 3) Price: ( 4 point)- The price is competitive but still a little bit pricey compare to other same stars and type food they serve 4) Quality and Taste : ( 4 point)- The quality is good, Candy taste is good and portions is average . 5) Type of sweet standard : ( 4 point) - The style of Sweet they serve is pretty close to the way it was growing up. Every time I crave some ice cream I walk down Alvarado and just stop by this store. As a local, I am telling you not to come here. They don't appreciate their local customers, how would they care for their tourists? I had a horrible experience with a lady named Maria. She gave me the wrong flavor of ice cream and as I corrected her she said she couldn't change out the flavor, since SHE misunderstood me. I understood that there was maybe miscommunication but, why wasn't she trying to form a solution or atleast apologize for the misunderstanding? I then obviously knew she was going to make me pay for another ice cream and as I asked her for a separate cone she said no? And I argued with her back and forth until I had to repeat myself and ask her, "why is it that I can't get another cone from you?" And when she went to give me the correct flavor, IT WAS EMPTY. It seems like she just didn't have what I asked of her and gave me what SHE thought I should get. She was so rude and because of her I won't be going back. read more

Pretty unique location... great alternative for anyone not trying to stand in line for the Ghirardelli or Rocky Mountain confection shops. This store houses a variety of salt water taffy in any flavor you can imagine... you are bound to satisfy any sweet tooth in your group or family hands down. Positives: great customer service - the cashier told me the story of getting the apples fresh per week, from Salinas (only 19 miles away). Ask for them to cut the coated apple for you ! Our favorite was toffee caramel almond. The apples are green and not fiji apples, which contributes to the great flavor combination of sweet, crunchy, and sour. Negatives: 1/2 a pound of candy for $5-6 is way too much....also, $10 for a candy apple. If not for the novelty & incredible taste of it all , I would not frequent it due to pricing. This is a candy specific store located right in Portola Plaza right near the monterey state historic park museum. Pretty much an identical twin of the one on cannery row. Parking is more or less street only given the fact that portola plaza is pedestrian only-although this is within easy walking distance of fisherman's wharf, the dali museum and that hotel and spa in portola plaza has valet parking available. Like a lot of things in old monterey you'll best be served by parking somewhere else and walking in. This is a medium sized store jam packed with candy of all kinds, and the occasional soda and slurpee machine choices. They've a wide variety of fudge (available by the piece or by the pound) truffles, nut clusters, haystacks, every kind of saltwater taffy known to mankind, all the chocolate dipped fruits-strawberry, orange peel etc, old timey stuff-rock candy, horehound etc, coconut bars (the kind dyed into tricolors), and exotica such as chocolate dipped bacon and jalapenos. I didn't see any of that gimmicky insect candy (such as tequila flavor lollipops with worms inside) thank god, but then I didn't spend any time hunting for it either. Lot's and lots of good choices all laid out in a well lit colorful store. Kids are gonna go nuts here as there is a ton of colorful stuff right at child eye level, so parents plan ahead a bit on how to handle the demands for things that you may not want them to have such as the chocolate covered espresso beans. Pricing is higher then a grocery store, but isn't all that bad considering the standard tourist overcharging of the area. A couple of sweets can be had for five bucks or so, but yeah it's easy to go crazy here and run up the tab. Quality can be an issue. Some items aren't expired exactly, but they sure aren't the freshest either. Not a big deal for the manufactured items, but can be very noticeable in the stuff from the case. All in all this is an excellent spot to get a chocolate/sugar fix within perfect walking distance of lot of monterey that is of interest to families. read more

In Portola Plaza building. Near Jacks and Peter B's. Friendly service by young employees. Great selection of chocolates. Not stale like other reviewers have posted. I by-passed the place deliberately because other yelpers have said the chocolate's not fresh. I'm a chocoholic who has been known to rip through a package of chocolate at 4 am due to a deep craving. So if their chocolate was stale, I would tell you and I wouldn't return. Same quality as other chocolate places on the wharf. You can get an ice cream cone and have it at the outdoor tables at Custom House Plaza. Maybe I'm not buying the same products as other reviewers or maybe the manager has decided to start ensuring quality. But don't bypass the place. Give it a chance. We were in Old Town Monterey and had just finished our lunch and were headed to a nearby festival, when the kids naturally gravitated to this candy store. It was pretty hilarious how like a moth to a flame they were instinctively drawn to sugar! Lol This candy store knows their target audience is children. This is shown by their entire store layout, from their window display and signs in bright, bold colors and of course, literally tons of candy everywhere! As soon as you walk in you don't see isles in their store per se, rather you see barrels and barrels filled with candy with a small walking path in between lanes of barrels. The barrels are strategically sized at a child's eye level. I think they pretty much have every type of candy imaginable here. I for one have never seen so much salt water taffy in my life and in every flavor imaginable! Strangely enough, despite all the choices, nothing appealed to me. Maybe it's the knowledge that people before me probably man-handled and riffled through those barrels that turned me off. Also, I guess you can call me a candy snob who prefers candy made in Europe and candy that is sold in a glass case. Lol The big question is: With all those barrels filled to the brim with candy, how do they rotate the candy and keep an eye on expiration dates? As expressed in earlier reviews from fellow Yelpers: the freshness of the candy is questionable. It's sneaky on their part that they have a lot of salt water candy because the wrappers on the saltwater taffy do not note their expiration dates. So be sure to purchase with caution. Despite the shadiness and marketing tactics, I let the kids pick out a candy each. After all, we rarely visit candy stores so I figured a small treat was in order. We got a total of three candies: A Tootsie Roll lollipop and two other miscellaneous candies that I could not easily discern what they were from the packaging. One of the candies was literally a mini spray bottle filled with what is basically sugar water! So weird but my stepson loved it. Every now and then I'd hear a spray bottle being sprayed in the back seat of the car and thought he was putting on cologne! Lol Turns out he was eating his candy! Lol Anyway we ended up paying almost $9 on only three pieces of candy! The prices are outrageous! To put it into perspective, you could easily buy two to three bags of candy at a grocery store for that same amount! As for the customer service, I felt that we were rushed to pay. While we were looking around, the girl at the counter kept asking us if we were ready to pay. I told her that we weren't ready yet but about five minutes later she'd ask again! The irony is that when we paid she didn't even give us her undivided attention! She was too busy chatting with her coworker who had skipped out of the store to purchase food at the nearby festival. My advice to parents is to try and steer your kids away from the glitz and the glam of this candy store. It's not worth it. That is unless you like overpriced, expired candy served to you with disdain. read more

Ok so they don't take AMEX and they are pretty pricey (Approx. $8.00/quarter pound of fudge). The customer service isn't the most outstanding either. I'm giving them 4 stars because their chocolate walnut fudge is absolutely to die for. It was the perfect texture, perfect taste; just incredible. I only tried one flavor but I'm sure the others are just as decadent. I bought some for a friend and she said it was the best fudge she's ever tasted as well. I definitely will be back next time I'm in the area for the quality of the fudge they offset. read more

I bought a rocky road caramel apple and when I got home and cut it in half there was fuzzy green mold in the middle. I'm lucky that I cut it first and didn't just bite into it. I'm trying to find a way to contact them and get my money back because that is un acceptable. read more

Came here bought a couple of old stale candies for the kiddos and paid thirty dollars. I couldn't believe it, if I had bought from another store it would have cost me five dollars. My opinion of Candyland is mixed. The majority of the candy we bought was stale or old. Everyone in my family grabbed their own basket and loaded up with all different types of the candy sold in bulk. We had Swedish fish, Reese's cups, alpine mints, several different types of taffy, gummies and more. The chocolates were so old that they were white. The taffy was stale and stuck to the wrapper...yuck! We also tried a rocky road Carmel Apple and a slice of fudge. The Carmel Apple was yummy...marshmallows, chocolate, Carmel and nuts. The fudge was decent nothin special but much better than everything else. We love the location when we visit the Portola Hotel and Spa. The beenie babies are always a hit too. My advice to the management of this store is to switch out the candy sold in bulk and ensure freshness with some sort of quality check. Prices are a bit high too. read more

Stay away from this tourist trap. The prices are outrageous as noted in other reviews. A bottle of water & 2 scoops of ice cream in a waffle cone was $14. It wasn't even great ice cream so the prices were especially ridiculous. For the price, one would expect to eat gold. read more

I paid 23.99 for a couple pieces of rocky road chocolate for my husband. Later that day when he took a bite, he spit it out in disgust as it was old and tasted horrible - I will never return.
