5/23/26 After getting off our whale watch tour, we walked around checking out the cute little shops on Fisherman's Wharf and noticed a line here. The "handmade" ice cream sign caught my eye, so we decided to give it a try. I got the butter pecan. If you like super creamy, rich, milky-style butter pecan, this may not be for you. Their ice cream has more of an icy texture with a lighter flavor. I actually enjoyed it since I'm not a fan of overly creamy or overly sweet ice cream. It felt lighter and more refreshing. The rainbow sherbet had the same icy texture. One thing is that the ice cream melts very quickly, almost watery, even in 65-degree weather, so have napkins ready. One complaint was the scoop sizes. Our scoops were noticeably smaller compared to other customers being served around the same time, so the portions felt inconsistent for the price. It's always a stop for us when visiting Monterey. Casual, walk up ice cream shop. My in-laws are local yet when I'm in town we find ourselves here or Pacific grove for dinner and ice cream. I always spend a day at fisherman's wharf and Cannery row. The line can get busy mostly when it's warmer. This area is a popular tourist area, but I usually visit off season so it's never too crazy. When they are busier, they get through the line fairly quickly and the checkout process is painless. I love their creamy milk based flavors and I can't wait to visit again in the Spring. To start the line moved incredibly fast! It was super nice, specially with the cold air. There was plenty of ways to read the menu before you got there to know what you wanted. The staff was super quick and nice, getting your choice of dessert out to you. Nothing worse than eating icy "ice cream" with no flavor. I came here after dinner at Old Fisherman's Grotto to get ice cream for dessert. Big mistake since this place is just not good. I ordered one scoop of coffee ice cream and my fiancé ordered a scoop of chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a cup. They didn't have enough of his ice cream so they topped it off with some chocolate ice cream. It's nice that they weren't skimpy but that wasn't enough to take away from the icy factor that he also encountered with his ice cream. The coffee flavor was very faint and had little inclusions of I don't know what till this day but it just wasn't good or a memorable experience. Park at either the parking lot or parking garage up past Benihanas. You need more than 30 minutes to walk the entire shops aisle and stand and enjoy the seals. This little walk up shop is half way down the row of businesses. They have their menu conveniently displayed before it is your turn to order. There are about 12 flavors to choose from. They have some super yummy looking sundaes available but definitely shareable. This visit we decided on a scoop of banana in a plain waffle cone. It hit the spot. So yummy and something about banana ice cream takes me back to my childhood and almost centers me because it's such a no fuss classic flavor. Will definitely need to come back next time. The older wanted chocolate ice cream in a bowl. Both of them got kid scoops . I called it ...as the little niece took two bites and said she was done -_- gotta love kids! I was craving something sweet at the pier decided to give this place a try. They were out of a lot of their flavors, but it was near the evening time, so I don't blame them with how crowded it gets here. I got myself a funnel cake with strawberry ice cream and it was really solid. The cake part was not oily and it came with plenty of strawberry. The ice cream was not overly sweet. The kids size cup is $3.75 and the regular scoop is $4.50. I honestly didn't see too much of a difference between those two sizes. If you're not really craving ice cream or just want to try it out, a kids scoop is perfect! There was a bit of miscommunication between the cashier and I when we ordered our ice cream cups.. This ice cream venue is outdoors, and there was a decent line of 15-20 people outside of the shop. The customer service was great. The workers were patient with each customer and got through each order quickly . Ambiance and service aside, the ice cream here is underwhelming. I got a scoop of the salted caramel, and my expectations were, as the ice cream name says itself, to get a rich, malty, caramel flavor with a nice touch of salt at the end of each bite. Any good ice cream is always going to have a very solid vanilla base, then the customization of flavors (chocolate, mint, strawberry, etc.) will follow and complement the overall quality of ice cream. The ice cream at Monterey Bay Creamery was bland, no flavor whatsoever. I only got slight hints of salted caramel after several bites. In between each bite of ice cream, I noticed that there were small chunks of ice that I had to chew on. This might have to do with the way in which the ice cream base is mixed, and I don't think the ice cream base was made well. I gave the two stars because I was expecting more from a shop that makes homemade ice cream. The shop is in a great location with a very steady stream of visitors coming in to explore Monterey, they should take better opportunity of this and up the quality of their ice cream! Pineapple coconut ice cream was so good. The first day, we went around closing. The employees were packing up the shop, and I thought we were too late. They saw us looking and came to serve us. The price is what you would expect of its location. I thought it the pineapple coconut was worth it, though. It was creamy and filled with plenty of pineapple and coconut bits. They added a bunch of marshmallows, almonds, and whip with Chocolate sauce across the top. She wanted a churro and the guy suggested to get the mini churros with the sundae. Came here on a sunny day. After years of not being in the Bay I decided to get some good ol ice cream. As i browsed the menu; the item " cookies by the bay" caught my attention. Basically any ice cream that has oreo is a winner for me. As i ordered i asked the cashier if i can have caramel sauce instead of chocolate. She said "yes," and i was thrilled. The cashier then went and made this deliciousness with a cherry on top. Once i got it and tasted it . It was pretty okay. Is not the best out there but it was good. The item was just too big for one person. Eventhough i love ice creama and oreos this was just a bit too big for me. And really, really sweet for my taste.
