Okay, we're actually talking about a candy shop, not Sammy Davis Jr. (or any version of that song). The Candyman, up in Orient, will fill your sweet tooth with just what you need, and not only with candy. My lady and I stopped in when heading out east (back at the end of the summer) and grabbed a few tasty items to gobble down later on. Heading to the end of the North Fork will make it almost certain that you'll cross paths with The Candyman (not the creepy B-horror movie chap). It's a small storefront and looks like a relic amongst more modern businesses that are building up on the LI forks. Don't let that sway you. Make the stop! Once inside you'll see how this is a vintage setup. Things seem family-owned (whether they are, I cannot say). Bags of chocolate-covered pretzels, marshmallows, Oreos, and plenty of other goodies line the walls. The display case is filled with truffles, jellies, and creams of varying flavors. Basically, you'd be hard-pressed in not finding something you'd wanna buy. Price-wise things are decent. You can grab 1/4 pound of candies for $4.50 which will pack in quite a few pieces. That's what my girlfriend and I did (to later dive into while sitting on the beach). Each piece we got (orange cream, caramel, peppermint, raspberry, and a few others) tasted homemade and not something from a Hershey's factory. It was a locally sweet treat to end the summer. Overall, The Candyman is a quality confectionary spot worthy of your sugar intake. It may be far off in Northeastern LI so it won't be something you'll necessarily visit often, but if you're heading out yonder, do yourself a favor and visit The Candyman. Three adult women traveling for a girls weekend getaway spotted this adorable establishment and went in to browse. The Candyman has a very nice selection of Easter chocolates. Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate Milk Chocolate, Solid Chocolate, Hollow Chocolate etc. Lots of other candies as well, gummies, licorice and more. Although a little pricey, I felt that each piece was handmade and worth a small purchase--$100 worth. Service is not friendly at all. Very poor customer service. Too bad. read more

Visited 3 years later, still have many trays but nothing worth buying this time. The designs were all summer (good for one season) or the shapes were not practical, either too small or with large side handles making it easier to spill. That's the fun of visiting the store though--the designs are different each time. Hope to find something next visit. read more

Nice little candy shop in Orient in a blink and you'll miss it spot along Rte 25. A nice selection of chocolates and other sweets. Tried the dark chocolate mint melt away and it was great. Tried the sweet licorice as well, though not great, was still good. Prices are a little high but the chocolate was great quality. The staff were nice as well. Love this place, I visit family out in LI a couple times a year and without fail every time since forever this is a must stop. My family has been going to the Candyman since candy was being sold out of a garage. The chocolate is great. I have my favorites, everything dark chocolate but that of course is just my preference. -Peanut Butter Crunch, tastes like a butterfinger -Clusters -Marzipan -Oreos -Butter Crunch, which is not located in the glass front area but is kept behind on the counter I can't comment on the rest of the candy, like gummies etc. I just feel like I can go to CVS and get Swedish fish but I can't get chocolate like this anywhere else. The staff are not particularly friendly/borderline rude, almost to the point that I feel as if I am inconveniencing them, sorry that you work here and I want some chocolate? Great little candy shop that you will pass on you way if headed to the Orient Point ferry from Long Island or getting off the Orient Point Ferry. Basically in the middle of nowhere. So if you're craving something sweet or want to pick up some sweet little treats this is the place to stop. I haven't been there in a few years but I've been there a couple of times and I've never been disappointed. Always had something to satisfy my sweet tooth. Very pleasant people family-owned. I remember I wasn't sure if I was going to like something in the even let me sample it first. Candyman is a little chocolate shop right on Rt. 25 in Orient. We always stop there when we go on bike trips to Sag Harbor or Greenport and get little bags of treats to take with us. I felt bad not buying something and asked a woman if the had chocolate covered gummy bears, all she said was "No" and didn't offer help or suggest anything else. We always stop in here whenever we venture that far east on the north fork, which is often. The chocolates are freshly made and they offer a wide variety of fillings in both dark and milk chocolates. They also have a decent selection of sugar free candies. What I appreciate most is the ability to just purchase one or two different pieces to try. My childhood is filled with many fond memories of The Candyman. Each summer my family would frequently take the ferry from Bridgeport into Port Jeff, and then drive to a shared extended family home in Orient. The Candyman was a highlight of the trip for the family, and we made sure to stop by every time. On the way there my father would always sing "The candy man can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good!". If we were lucky we would stop both on our way into Orient and on our way out for some candy to munch on for the drive home. I loved the chocolate lollipops with rainbow sprinkles, my mother loved the salt water taffy, my sister loved the chocolate turtles, and my father would always munch on a bit of everyone's loot! I hope that The Candyman remains in Orient for many years to come so that I can share the nostalgia and joy with my future children. read more

How much do I love this place? Well, if they ever sell or close shop, I'd do my best to take this place over and keep it running, and maybe even open another location in my current state of residence! The goods - Amazingly delicious candy made on site. There is nothing like fresh made chocolate with such a simple list of ingredients. The gummy bears and jelly beans are like none I've ever tasted with the best fruit flavors, and their old fashioned Christmas candy is the real deal. I have been enjoying candy from here since I received my very first Christmas stocking and Easter basket. I still make a stop every time I visit back to the area and stock up on treats for myself and gifts for friends. I even send "order requests" to my parents in-between visits (if I'm going to indulge in some candy it better be the best)! Atmosphere - Understand this - this is an OLD-FASHIONED candy shop with the vibe to match. I don't think this place has really changed since my childhood, but I wouldn't call it dirty. It's kitschy and cute (even with the tacky floral carpet). And GOD, DOES IT SMELL GOOD when you walk in the door. If you want to give your kids a magical holiday - this is the candy they will BELIEVE came from Santa or the Easter bunny The old-school chocolate molds and foil wrappings on chocolate eggs is SO much better tasting and looking than what you buy at the supermarket. I never thought anything much of it until she was rude to one of girls working there. She basically snapped at her in front of us, for something so small it wasn't even worth calling out. This IMO, is completely uncalled for and inappropriate. Never in any case should you yell at employees with customers present, and in this case it was for something like over-filling a box of chocolate (which is charged by weight anyways and as customers we'd gladly pay a little more to get one more delicious piece of candy)! This was really upsetting to see at such a favorite place of mine and I hope was a rare occurrence rather than common one. Overall, The Candy Man is a rare find when it comes to candy shops. Family run for four generations, they use the same old recipes and methods as they did from the beginning. You really are getting a special treat when you purchase their candy, but it appears management could be more friendly to both it's staff and customers. read more
