I have never ever left anything but good reviews on here, but the experience I just had with Cane & Basket Supply left me feeling genuinely taken advantage of and insulted. I brought two cane cesca style chairs to this place for a repair quote on January 5th. When I arrived, Susan and Fred quoted me approximately $85-90/chair, they also volunteered that they would even polish the legs where the chrome was rusting. The quoted timeline was approx. 2 weeks. Sounds great! Next step they said would be a follow up call in one week with an exact quote once their guy was back in and could look at them. No call. I followed up myself two weeks later, and was told it would be an additional 2 weeks. No quote yet. Ok, no problem, I said. They must be busy. 6 weeks later, still no call. I followed up again on 2/13 and was finally given a quote - $400 - over double the original quoted price. I pointed this out to Susan on the phone and her verbatim response was "I'm sorry numbers are confusing." I swear to god lol. They came down to $300 all-in after seeing I was clearly unhappy with the price gouging, but that is still $100 over their original quote! When I went to pick up the chairs - first, the legs were not polished as Susan and Fred originally promised. Their demeanor, including Everado, was instantly hostile as they snickered at me despite the fact that I was nothing but polite. I wanted to say "What is going on here? How old are you and what makes you think it's ok to treat someone, let alone a customer like this?" I'm the youngest person of the three of them by about 30 years probably and they were acting like poorly behaved children. Maybe they felt they could get away with treating me like this because of my age? A final slap in the face, when I went to pay, I asked if they took credit card, to which they said "yes, but it will charge us a fee." Ok, I said, fine with me. Everado then insisted that I pay via Zelle or cash, despite them admitting to having the capability to take credit card. The message essentially being "yes, we take credit card, but not for you". If there's another place that does this in LA, I'd say go there. The work they do is fine, even good, but save yourself the pain of having to deal with these grown up children. read more

Yelp Cane and Basket In preparation for my grandson's first visit, I noticed that the rocker I had used for my son was in desperate need of repair. I called Cane and Basket supply after being referred by a friend. (Although I live in Santa Barbara, I am in LA here and there.) A lady named Susan answered the phone...likely the owner. (I could hear the smile in her voice.) I knew immediately this was the only place I could trust with my cherished family heirloom. On my next trip to LA from SB where I live, I loaded my rocker in my Subaru and paid a visit to the trendy Miracle Mile neighborhood. What a cool part of LA?! The location on Cochran Ave. was easy to find and parking was ample. As soon as I pulled in and entered the store, a nice gentleman (Evie) offered to help me unload my chair. Susan cheerfully came down the hall and I mentioned talking to her on the phone. She recalled our conversation and we swapped grand baby stories. I could tell that she not only cared about my rocking chair but also cared to get to know me! I left my chair with her and a few weeks later I returned to LA to pick my chair up. When I returned I brought two rattan suitcases I've had since childhood. Susan took the time to repair them on the spot graciously. Tears came to my eyes as I saw the gorgeous handiwork and craftsmanship on my beloved restored rocker. I know that it will last for generations to come due to the quality. my dog chewed a hole through my favorite straw basket and i was very sad. :( cane & basket supply co is on my way to my friend's house, so i pass it often. i've always been curious about it (it's so specific! how do they stay in business!), and finally i had reason to go. i brought my basket with the hole in it and talked to susan, one of the owners i'm assuming. susan looked at the breaks in the basket and told me honestly her repair person wouldn't fix it. in an act of total and unexpected coolness, she whipped out some black straw thread and sewed the hole shut. the basket is now almost as good as new and the chunk my dog took out of it is invisible! i wanted to pay her, but she insisted that it was a complimentary simple repair!!! you don't get that type of generosity anywhere anymore! if you have anything cane or straw that needs to be repair or preserve, this is the place to go! if you want to learn basket making (i know i would) and need a one-stop place for supplies, come here!!!!! parking is a breeze, they are well stocked, and the service is exceptional. read more

Ruben did a beautiful job. then the cheapest-man-in-the-world, my bro-in-law, brought his dining chairs to be re-caned. I found these folks on the internet as I was trying to decide if I should get rid of our 35+ year old dining room chairs because the cane webbing in the back of the chairs had begun to split from top to bottom. The site said to send a sample of the spline and the webbing if unsure of what to order and they would contact you. For a buck it was worth trying. A couple of days later a gal from their shop called and we chatted for about 20 minutes about cane webbing, what I'd need and how to do it. I ordered the materials and tools which came a couple of days later. The materials were top notch, the instructions were in plain english and easy to follow and I repaired the broken chairs for a fraction of the cost of one new chair in about three hours. Great shop, great help. Woohoo! My wife is proud of me and I didn't have to buy new chairs. read more
