    Paella

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Amazing restaurant, dimly lit, nicely furnished, and with a cozy comfortable setting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have a friendly and knowledgeable staff with a robust wine menu! Mostly Spanish wines. The paella was excellent and all tapas portions were larger than expected! You might need to call ahead to reserve paella. Not one dish disappointed! Probably the best tapas in the city.

Came to Canela for a work dinner and had a pleasant time! recs: bacon-wrapped dates, seared scallops, pulpo - Patatas Bravas: A heaping portion! Super good for sharing. I do wish the sauce were a bit spicier/more flavorful, but it's a good and filling carb to have on the table. - Seafood and Chorizo Paella: The presentation is beautiful, and the portion is more than enough for six. We had quite a lot left over by the end of the dinner since we ordered this along with a ton of other appetizers. The toasty rice at the bottom of the pan was the best part. The flavor of the rice is light, and which lets the flavors of the seafood, chorizo, and sauce shine through. - Seared Scallop: Cooked perfectly! A nice and tasty bite. (I love corn but was confused as to why it was an accompaniment since it just falls off the skewer...) - Pork Empanada: Soft, creamy, and savory and topped with a crisp salad. Also easy to split and good for sharing. - Pulpo: Perfectly small cuts of smoky octopus that are also good for nibbling on as a group. We were full by the time this came out but still demolished it. We made a same-day reservation during dinner hour for a party of ~6, but the restaurant seemed to fill up soon after we arrived, so it would be worth making a reservation if you're coming with a larger group. Food comes out in waves, so make sure you aren't super full when all your dishes haven't come out. Service was super friendly, and our waiters took the time to explain dishes and bring plates. The only reason it was slow was because the restaurant was full and there only seemed to be two waiters -- they were running around the entire time. :' ( Super glad to have had the chance to try this neighborhood spot -- its seems popular for a reason! Would come back to try their happy hour.

Delicious Spanish tapas. Came here with a friend on a Friday of Lent when we couldn't have meat; this place has a good variety of seafood and vegetarian options. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also super convenient spot to get a bite to eat on Market before a night out in the Castro.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking can be tricky.

4.5 Stars We had a wonderful date night at this tapas spot. Drinks: Our first time trying orange wine :) ($13 a glass on Wine Wednesday). I opted for a dry cider ($6). Food: -Cheese Plate ($17 for 2) - beautifully plated -Bone Marrow ($8 for one bone) - perfectly cooked, served with a herb sauce -Tortilla Español ($12) - this was fine -Bavette Steak ($29) - I loved the roasted vegetables on the side, the steak was a bit too lean for me but BF liked it [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is dimly lit and sophisticated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Staff are very polite & attentive.

Visited this establishment that has been in business for 15+ years and enjoyed it. We had Potato bravas Shishito peppers Anchovies 5/5 Scallops 5/5 Polpo 4/5 Bone marrow 5/5 For dessert we tried the tart, banana pecan ice cream and churros with chocolate (this was my fav). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Modern and homey space with great service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Two cheeses - Truffle & black pepper. Both yummy! Served with honey, olives, apple, bread. Can get gluten free bread too

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great date night spot in the Castro![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Been here several times and always great service, good food, and lovely time. Definitely a little more on the expensive side for tapas but IMO it's worth it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This spot is also good for groups too.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They offer gluten free bread for my celiac folks and have a parklet if you are looking for outdoor dining. Favorite dish of the night was gambas al pimento! We will be back

Another delightful and cozy spot offering exceptional service, food and beverages! If you're in the mood to satisfy your craving of Spanish delicacies... I recommend Canela Bistro and Wine Bar! Where you're treated like family and leave with wonderful memories. First off the food. I'd say the pork empanada and the chicken skewers were memorable and highly recommended. There's simply so much to choose from! If you feel adventurous...try the Chef's Tapas tasting menu. It's a great option and also comes as a vegetarian option. Dessert is a must! We had the churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. Absolute perfection. The wine. SO MUCH WINE and me with so little time to enjoy them all! Ha! Canela does have a great selection and also offers crafted drinks. Guess I'll need to come back. Misc... I highly recommend you arrive by taxi, ride share or public transit. Parking can be tough to find during peak hours. But if you're a tourist like us...circling around the block a few times was well worth it! Reservations are also recommended. Overall: If you're from the area...lucky you! If you're visiting this wonderful city, put it on the top of your list to receive a wonderful dining experience! Cheers!

We visited Canela Bistro & Wine Bar for my friend's birthday dinner. They were able to accommodate his 12-person reservation, and we were seated at a huge table in its own seating area. The interior had a warm color scheme with patterned walls and colorful wall art. For drinks, we ordered a few rounds of red Sangria for the table, and the servers just kept it coming - very tasty! My friend also pre-ordered a few appetizers, including an assortment of cheeses (awesome selection, paired great with the apples and honeycomb), Flash Fried Shishito Peppers, and Patatas Bravas (tasty, flavorful). We ended up ordering the rest of our items family-style as well. The Croquetas de Jamon were a big hit, although I didn't try these. The Gambas Al Ajillo were one of my favorite items! I've tried many different versions of this dish, and Canela's was really impressive. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, with the ideal amount of garlicky flavor. The Baked Cana De Cabra was pretty good as well, but sounded better in theory. My other favorite item was the Lamb Pinchos - perfectly cooked lamb skewers with delicious brussels sprouts on the side. Service was friendly and our servers did a great job keeping up with our large party. Would recommend!

This was such a wonderful experience all around! We were celebrating a friends birthday and reserved a table beforehand - they suggested we pre order some food and it was absolutely perfect. All the food was perfect / there wasn't a single tapas plate or paella left untouched or unfinished. Bacon wrapped dates were a huge hit and so was the seafood paella (not pictured). Service was absolutely impeccable and rivaled Michelin-starred service. One person running the whole floor and she didn't miss a single beat - food timed perfectly, attentive without being overbearing, great suggestions for wine and food, and she remember everyone's preferences for wine so all we had to do was enjoy celebrating my friends birthday! Nobody rushed us to get out [[HIGHLIGHT]]Atmosphere is so lively and a few birthday celebrations were going on so it's great for bigger groups.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Saw some smaller groups and solo dinners - everyone was either ordering the bacon wrapped dates or croquetas as well. Pricing was super reasonable for the amount of food we had as a group and nothing was served cold. Will be coming back soon and for future celebrations :) can not recommend this place enough.

sangria and cheese plate good / started off strong but the other tapas such as the patatas bravado and pulpo and the main dishes paella was just fine

What a fantastic experience! We came here for a restaurant week and could not be better. We did the chef's tasting menu and we were so full at the end! Our favorites were: almond and pear gazpacho - it was so delicious and so savory! I would go back just for this. And the pork empanadas, and the gambas al ajillo. Jamon croquetas and dates were good also. One of us could not eat fish but they kindly replaced it to another tasting menu. Highly recommend and easy the best spanish tapas place ive ever been to!

Went here for SF restaurant week! Had such a feast and shared amazing tapas with my friends. Service was a bit slow towards the end but overall super friendly. Good ambiance on a Sunday night! You can't go wrong with any of the tapas! I enjoyed a nice white sangria with my meal.

I thought I had left a review after having dinner here with my friend about a month ago, but guess that only happened in my dreams, and the food was definitely good enough to end up in my dreams. My friend and I got here around 7:30pm, and while it's was pretty busy, we were seated right away. Since it was our first time trying out this place, we went with the tapas tasting menu. We thought about having paella, but it was recommended to call ahead so the kitchen has sufficient time to prepare. Anyways, the tapas dinner was so fun and tasty. Of all the 10 dishes I had, none were bad at all! My top 3 from the menu were the shishito peppers, grilled shrimp, and the ice cream that tasted like horchata! The shishito peppers and grilled shrimp were so nicely seasoned, I could eat a whole bowl of them. The other tapas were great too! The anchovies were fresh and the orange slices gave them the right hint of sweetness and acidity. The gazpacho was a great palate cleanser to start the dinner. I definitely need to return to try their paella. Our server also made recommendations for us to try on our next visit.

Is the menu only fixed on Xmas eve (2025)? Thanks

Hi Don, thank you for the inquiry. On Christmas Eve you can order a la carte tapas. On New Years Eve, we have 4 different menus, but no a la carte. Thank you!

I am sensitive to garlic. A lot of tapas usually seems to rely on it. Will I be able to eat at Canela?

Hi C. J., Although we can't make everything without garlic, we have several dishes that we can do with no garlic. It is not an uncommon request. If you can just let your server know when you are ordering, that would be appreciated. Thank you!

Do you have ample vegan options? We have 1 vegan in our party of 6.

Hi Rachel, yes we have several vegan options. You can also view our dine in menu on our website. Several items are already vegan or easily vegan. Thank you! Mat

I called a couple of hours beforehand and made a same day reservation for three at 8 p.m. I was amazed they could get us in. The guy who answered the phone was so nice. We arrived right at 8 and were seated on the back patio. Our server took a little while to greet us, but by about 8:15 she showed up and we immediately ordered our salad and entrees. The heirloom tomato salad came out around 8:30 and was great in concept, though a few more pieces of cheese would have made a big difference. Our entrees, two salmon dishes and a medium-rare steak, came out around 9 p.m. We had waited a little too long, especially since the restaurant was not very full at that point. My steak was overdone, so as politely as possible, I sent it back. The server said it wouldn't take long, so I assumed 15 minutes at most. By 9:20, the steak still had not arrived and my family had finished eating. The server came by and said it would be out in another couple of minutes. Another 10 minutes passed, and there was still no steak and no sign of the server. At 9:30, I was so frustrated that I got up to cancel it. I found the server standing near the kitchen talking with other servers, while my steak was just sitting there in the service window. I'm sorry, but I did not come to a restaurant at 8 p.m. to eat my entree at 9:30 or later, after everyone else had already finished. What made it worse was that the server was not apologetic at all. We also ran out of water multiple times throughout the evening. Overall, it felt like the staff, other than the host, just didn't care. Neither the kitchen nor the server. I don't know if it's the no-tip model, but it definitely felt like an authentic European zero-customer-service type of experience. I'm really disappointed, Zazie. I know you can do better.

Everything we had here was surprisingly delicious. We had the Paella Mixta. Normally when we have Spanish paella I'm dissapointed by the scarcity of seafood and the chewiness of undercooked rice, but OMG this paella was delicious. The rice was so flavorful and addictive and there was an endless amount of juicy chicken, tender fish, shrimp, calamari, mussels . We're normally done scavenging for the good stuff in a minute between the four of us , but we even had leftovers tonight which was awesome. We also really enjoyed the plantain appetizer, the plantains were cooked, so tender and sweet, but also had these nice crisp edges. Also loved the black bean puree it came with. Also ordered the cheese quesadillas which were awesome. The cheese tasted so good, I assume it was Oaxacan cheese, it didn't taste like a plain mozzarella quesadilla Warm spinach salad was surprisingly tasty as well ! Comes with a light creamy dressing that wasn't overpowering, and well flavored by the mushrooms. I even had them removed the bacon and it was still a very tasty dish. Enjoyed our wine and beer, service was good !

Our server was super friendly, helpful, and provided great service to make us feel welcomed and he seemed very excited about the menu. Food was absolutely incredible. I was blown away by the peanut salad and how creamy and fresh it was. Perfect started. The shrimp baos were unique but super juicy, not too flavorful. Pork floss shumai was flavorful, juicy, and delicious. Garlic noodles were buttery, creamy, and had such a unique flavor I was really surprised and loved it. Absolutely amazing dinner and will be coming back!

My party of four came without a reservation, so we were seated along the wall against a small countertop area. It wasn't the most comfortable setting for a group hangout. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance. Space is a bit small so seating is limited. Ambiance is a vibe though. Cute and chic little wine bar in a central location. Between the four of us, we ordered the bread/butter, ceviche, Dungeness crab garlic noodles, and the Wagyu dog to share. We also got a bottle of their Lambrusco. The stars of the show were definitely the wine and the garlic noodles. I wouldn't recommend sharing the Wagyu dog as it got a bit messy. Everything was definitely overpriced, and portions were small. We had to order takeout from another restaurant afterwards to satiate our hunger lol. I'm glad I tried this spot but would only recommend stopping by if you're not very hungry or are just looking for some small snacks before an actual dinner.
