We awoke to an unseasonably warm morning in San Francisco, and made our way from our hotel to Haight St. and my daughter pointed out this venue saying that it looks "cute." Upon looking at the menu I was "in" for the SF vibe of the food offerings. Below is what we ate and our rating of the food: Me - smoked salmon on toast w/ baby pickles, capers, and spread. Oh-em-gee-times-ten....I was either REALLY hungry or the dish was THAT good! (it was that good!). The serving was generous and satisfying and was accompanied with salad greens tossed in a vinaigrette dressing. I am salivating as I write this. Son - breakfast burrito. He liked it. It was simple: scrambled eggs, bacon in a spinach tortilla. His young age did not help his appreciation of a green tortilla, so.....he only ate half Daughter - granola, fruit, yogurt parfait. She demolished it and enjoyed every bite. And, even carried her leftovers with her (all day, might I add) and ate them for breakfast in the hotel the next morning. To supplement their meals I ordered a side of toast and roasted potatoes. We ate with gusto! My cappuccino (which I only seem to order when I'm in San Francisco) was delicious and gave me enough energy to walk those hills with ease. The onions weren't properly caramelized. they were pale and translucent rather than deeply browned and sweet, which is what gives French onion soup its signature rich flavor. I hate to leave a one star for a café we have been going to successfully for many years. But our most recent experience really unnerved us and makes us hesitate to go back. We went down to eighth Street to go to the café a few days ago, on a wonderfully warm day, and as we entered, the hostess said "go ahead and sit anywhere." As we went to the back patio as we have done for over six years now, she rudely interrupted and said "not the patio." We were not sure what she was saying as she had turned away and talked away from us, but we asked if the patio was open. She laughed at us and said "no the patio is not open. You can't sit there. " We said OK well, we'll have to go some other time cause we don't eat indoors. She started laughing at us and said well OK and kept laughing as we exited. As I said, we have been going there for over six years and we always enter the indoors masked and the staff who's worked there for a long time know us as well. A group of coworkers and I stopped by for some early dinner. We were able to sit in the back patio for our meal. It was nice and open and it was quite busy for 4:50pm. We didn't think there would be a lot of people because it's quite early for dinner. But, the back patio was pretty packed during that time. The fries we ordered for the table came first, but even then it too about 25 minutes for our food to come. That isn't terrible timing but it is when half the group was a bit hangry. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich ($13) with the side salad. You can choose between a side salad or potato chips. Since we had some fries for the table to start, I opted for the salad. The fries we had were crispy, thin and came with a chipotle mayo like sauce. The order was really made for maybe 2 people, so if you love fries, definitely order more than 1. The side salad was quite delicious. The dressing they use for their baby green side salad was so fresh and went really well with the sandwich. The lemon thyme chicken was seasoned well and the fresh veggies and avocado paired nicely. The French roll was soft, though I kind of wished they toasted the bread so that were was some crisp/different texture in the sandwich. What's great about it this place is the whole menu is served all day, 8am to 8pm. The server was very attentive, the space was open and airy and the food was great and affordable. Healthy serving of brisket and definitely hit the spot of a more heavy brunch. I got the French onion soup and gees, that was inferior to any French onion soup I've ever had. I was surprised when it came out 2 minutes after I ordered it but soon saw why - they didn't bake the cheese in top. Instead it was very oily soup with a ton of shredded cheese in top. The toast on the side was good. I ate all of that. But I'm a lady who can eat and I didn't even finish half the soup because it really put me off. Did we do something wrong? My partner and I came here for brunch on Saturday, September 7th. We walked in and were handed orders but were not told where to sit. I asked, "Do we go to the patio?" because the group in front of us had been told to do so. The woman rudely just said "yeah." We sat at a table in the back of the patio next to where it's closed off. We were given waters and then just... ignored. For almost 30 minutes we sat there ready to order and the waiter ignored us. Finally, we managed to flag someone down to order.
